There’s a throwaway line in the movie that pretty much explains this: it’s stated that they don’t have a complete genome of any dinosaur and if they did they would look completely different than how they’re presented (ie be scientifically accurate). The scientists who bring these dinosaurs back to life aren’t trying to be accurate, they’re trying to make them profitable.

I didn’t miss that line. I heard that line. But the point of the post is that the dinosaurs in Jurassic World weren’t even as accurate as they had been in previous Jurassic Park films! Even the bad films! Am I supposed to believe Jurassic Park folks would come in to a park already full of non-tail-draggers and say “people just aren’t coming to see these straight-tailed balanced-looking dinosaurs, can we make them look more like illustrations from the 30s?” (And before you say any pessimistic crud about “YOU KNOW BUSINESSMEN”, no, this would never happen. Park-goers would probably not even notice that they weren’t dragging their tails.)  That’s not even mentioning the anatomical issues these creatures would run into when changed into tail-draggers.

And we are defining “more profitable” not by any logical standard, but by what the movie uses as an excuse for having gray/green boring and wholly inaccurate dinosaurs, which aren’t even as accurate as they were in the first 3 films. There are tons of things people would do to make the dinosaurs more interesting BEFORE making them look dumb– such as adding some dang color! 

Besides their bullshit excuse for an explanation, I don’t think the movie saying “well there’s a reason our dinosaurs don’t look right” is any reason for me to shut up about it, or to not point out just how backwards their dinosaurs were (which is REALLY backwards.) It doesn’t matter that they said briefly “these dinosaurs don’t look real” because kids (and many adults!!) who are watching this movie are gonna think this is what dinosaurs looked like. There are TWO SEQUELS planned. The entire next generation of kids is gonna grow up thinking these are dinosaurs. I don’t care if that doesn’t matter to you, it matters to me, because I care about dinosaurs. If people like me don’t make a fuss, then who’s gonna do it? I want the next set of people making dinosaur movies to see people getting mad at JW and say “oh man, better make my dinosaurs cooler than theirs” and make better dinosaur movies.

Like, we had JUST gotten over tail-dragging with the first Jurassic Park. They didn’t give us feathers, but could they at least have upheld the standard instead of sliding back 50 years??
