C’RIVER EDUCATION COMMISSIONER SHOWCASES EDUCATION SECTOR TRANSFORMATION AT ABUJA TOWN HALL

The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Sen.Prof. Stephen Odey, on Friday May 29, 2026 presented a comprehensive account of the sector’s transformation over the past three years under the administration of Governor Bassey Otu at a high-level Town Hall Meeting in Abuja.

The event, held at the prestigious Ladi Kwali Hall of the Abuja Continental Hotel, drew an influential audience of government officials, political leaders, stakeholders from all 18 local government areas, and Cross River indigenes resident in the Federal Capital Territory.

Delivering his presentation, Professor Odey described education as the cornerstone of sustainable development, emphasizing that the Otu-led administration has deliberately prioritized the sector through strategic reforms and targeted investments aimed at achieving global competitiveness.

He highlighted sweeping improvements across infrastructure, manpower development, policy implementation, and access to quality education, noting that the administration has repositioned the sector for measurable impact and long-term growth.

Among the landmark achievements is the full renovation and modernization of the Ministry of Education Headquarters, now equipped with solar power systems, ICT facilities, CCTV surveillance, and upgraded office infrastructure to enhance productivity and efficiency.

The Commissioner revealed that the state successfully accessed over ₦17 billion in intervention funds from the Universal Basic Education Commission between 2023 and 2025, following the prompt payment of counterpart funding. These resources facilitated the execution of 229 projects, including construction and rehabilitation of classrooms, installation of boreholes, and provision of over 23,000 customized school furniture across the state.

In a major milestone for academic development, the remodeled and digitized State Library Complex—commissioned by Vice President Kashim Shettima—has significantly enhanced access to research and learning resources.

Addressing examination support, Professor Odey noted that the government has consistently funded West African Examinations Council registration for indigenous students in public secondary schools since 2023. Within three years, 43,694 students benefitted at a cost exceeding ₦1.1 billion, contributing to improved performance in both WAEC and National Examinations Council, with Cross River now ranking among top-performing states nationally.

The Commissioner also announced the successful establishment and take-off of the University of Education and Entrepreneurship (UEE), Akamkpa, which has secured full accreditation from the National Universities Commission and commenced academic activities.

Further gains include the promotion of over 14,000 teaching and non-teaching staff, recruitment of additional educators, continuous professional development programmes, and strengthened quality assurance mechanisms across schools. He added that reforms such as the digitization of examination processes, annual school census exercises, bursary approvals through the State Scholarship Board, and the enactment of the Senior Secondary Education Board Law, 2026, have positioned the state to access additional intervention funding.

Professor Odey emphasized that the administration has demonstrated unmatched financial commitment to education, with over ₦265 billion allocated to the sector between 2024 and 2026. He also highlighted numerous national recognitions earned by the Ministry in areas including educational administration, science innovation, sports development, and environmental sustainability.

THE MASK UNVEILED: HOW YACHE NATION FOUND ITS VOICE AND IDENTITY

For decades, the Yache people of Cross River State where I come from, existed in the quiet corners of history. Though present, resilient, yet largely neglected and overlooked. Tucked within the northern part of Cross River state, the Yache community carried a robust and rich cultural heritage, deeply rooted traditions, along with an enduring spirit of unity. But then, inspite of our contributions to the socio-cultural fabric of Cross River, we were barely mentioned and often underrepresented when it comes to political discourses and underserved in terms of infrastructural development. We were, in several ways, a people “lost” in the broader narrative of development and progress.

Fortunately, this reality began to shift with the emergence of a visionary leader: Senator Prof. Stephen Adi Odey, Esq. His timely intervention ushered a turning point in the story of the Yache people, a transition from obscurity to recognition, from neglect to inclusion. Although this is not to water down the effort made by notable Yache men and women who have also impacted the land and it’s people in the past, only that Senator Odey’s approach is not merely political; it is transformational. Having understood the historical neglect already suffered by the Yache community, he prioritized inclusion, ensuring that our voices were not only heard but amplified within the corridors of power. Through deliberate advocacy, he gathered attention to our needs, by way of good roads, schools, healthcare facilities and economic opportunities, enabling the groundwork for sustainable development.

One of the most significant impacts of his leadership has been the strengthening of the Yache people’s connection to government institutions. Where there was once a disconnect, there is now a growing sense of belonging and participation. Community leaders, youth groups and women’s associations have found new platforms to engage, contribute and influence decisions that affect their lives. This renewed affiliation has fostered a sense of pride and identity among our people.
Infrastructural development has also played a key role in this transformation. Roads that once hindered movement and commerce are gradually being improved upon, opening up the community to trade and interaction. Educational initiatives have empowered the younger generation, equipping them with the tools to compete and excel beyond their immediate environment. Healthcare access has improved, enhancing the quality of life and reducing preventable hardships. Yet, beyond physical development, perhaps the most profound change lies in the restoration of dignity. The Yache people are no longer an afterthought; as we are now active stakeholders in the state’s progress, especially in the government of Governor Prince Bassey Otu. Our culture is being celebrated, as our contributions are also being acknowledged, giving us a way to reimagine the future with hope.

The story of my community – Yache, is a strong reminder that no community is too small or too remote to count. It also underscores the relevance of purposeful leadership and the importance of inclusive governance. Senator Prof. Stephen Odey’s role in this transformation, signifies a testament to what can be achieved when leaders choose to see, uplift and empower those who have long been neglected. Consequently, the Yache people are no longer “lost.” we have been found and recognized by leadership, by opportunity and by our own renewed sense of purpose. Our journey continues, but it is now guided by visibility, recognition as well as the promise of a brighter and a secured future.
