Button bliss!

Button bliss!
For some reason it says here that I bought the wifi only version but I actually bought the 3G, with black cover, last June. I have had a Kindle Keyboard since 2010. What I really like about it is the physical page-turn buttons. Even though subsequent kindles had lighted screens and other attributes, which are not on the Keyboard, I was easily able to resist the temptation to upgrade because I kept hoping that Amazon would bring back the buttons. They seemed to think that moving to the age of the touch screen meant readers would no longer want the buttons. I was slightly tempted by the haptic sensor “buttons” on the Voyage but lots of reviewers didn’t seem to like them so I held off and along came the Oasis: buttons and a new shape all at the same time! Firstly, I have to say that I really like the Oasis. I am thrilled with the physical buttons. They are so precise, and not noisy, though I do agree with another reviewer who suggested that they might have been better placed just a bit closer to the bezel/page edge – thus enabling the reader to (I forget exactly how the other reviewer described it but I understood exactly what s/he meant) be holding onto the edge of the Oasis with their thumb knuckle and just press down ever so slightly with the pad of the thumb to turn the page. However, as a friend once said to me when I bemoaned the lack of physical buttons since the Keyboard and before the Oasis: that’s a first world problem, and not really something to be over concerned about! Secondly, the shape: before I got it I imagined that I would use it without the charging cover. But, in fact, I rarely do. I suspect it’s because I find it hard to get a comfortable hold for any length of time. When I do I hold it with the lower edge resting on the inside of my little finger and my thumb resting on the edge, hovering over the lower button. I have changed the default position, so that the lower button is now page forward as I find this a more natural way to hold the Oasis. Usually, I hold it with the charging cover folded back on itself and my index finger in between the cover and the back of the kindle as I find this most comfortable. Thirdly, the cover: If someone told me that it wasn’t leather I could believe him. It’s so thin it’s hard to tell whether it’s leather or not. It looks good apart from the “amazon” blazed across the front of it! Honestly, what was Amazon thinking? What’s wrong with Kindle? I mean does anyone not know that the Kindle is Amazon’s baby? I’ve yet to hear anyone say, “Have you seen my amazon?” or “I must charge my Amazon” though I’m sure most kindle users would say, “I must charge my kindle”. So I’m less than impressed about that. Fourthly, the screen: one thing I don’t like is that I have noticed a discrepancy in the size of the largest fonts compared with the Kindle Keyboard. Leaving aside the fact that if you increase to the largest font(s) you obviously have to turn pages more frequently since you get fewer words on the small screen, the two largest fonts are indeed smaller than on the Keyboard. I compared them side by side, with the same page of the same book. This is not of fundamental importance to me at present, unless I wish to read without my reading glasses, though I am sure there are those with much poorer eyesight for whom that alteration in size might make a difference. I don’t know why the sizes aren’t the same since the overall screen sizes are the same. As for the much talked about “lighting” issues. I can see what people mean by shadows at the right hand side though, to be honest, I only notice them if I turn the lighting away up and start looking for the shadows. If I am reading in bed at night (and do not wish to cause my husband any disturbance by having a bedside light on) I only ever have the light set at 7 or 8. During the day I don’t have the screen light on at all but I do enjoy having the facility in low light conditions. Finally, I am not entirely convinced about the security/safety of the Oasis with just its own cover. I suspect it may be a fragile thing if dropped, so I made myself a little padded denim envelope/sleeve, which I keep it in all the time when not using it and when carrying it in my handbag. I feel happier that my costly, luxury item is better protected than Amazon seems to think it needs to be! Overall, I am very pleased with my Oasis. The charging/having-to-charge-more-frequently-than-they-expected complaints from others don’t really concern me. How many of us are living lives so far away from an electrical socket that we need weeks of holding a charge? I haven’t taken careful note but I don’t find myself sighing and thinking, “Oh, no, I have to charge it again!” and I read for at least an hour every day, some days two or three hours. So, based on my experience, I am very happy to recommend the Oasis to others.

    Another winner from Amazon!

Well I've now been the proud owner of my Kindle Oasis for just over 24 hours, I have to say I'm overjoyed with it, I also own the Kindle Voyage, a device I thought it was going to be extremely difficult for Amazon to better, hence me holding back from ordering the Oasis a few months, the thing is, the have done so. The Oasis is simply brilliant, it does exactly what it should, allow you to read and forget your doing so, I read lastnight till dawn, it's so well balanced in hand and so light it disappears, there is no wrist strain, no aching or clicking of your joints, it simply allows you to get lost in your book of the moment. The device itself is extremely easy on the eye, the Voyage was a quality product but this goes one step further, it truly is the king of E-readers, the glass screen is wonderful, the text crisp and the lighting clear and evenly lit, the metal frame and backing feels very high quality and soft to the touch, the "wedge" is coated in a high quality soft rubber/plastic for a good grip, Amazon have even listened to Kindle users and brought back tactile buttons which pleases me immensely and allows for seamless but tactile page turns, the charger case is a brilliant touch extending device battery life while not impacting it's weight, also loved the fact it was included, it is after all what I'd expect when paying £270 but it's like I've said a quality product. Any niggles, mah not really, the usual bane of finger oils on the device is yet to be dealt with but I assume that has more to do with human kinds evolution than Amazon to solve, the only few minor things I didn't like was the loss of Kindle branding on the device to Amazon and the fact they have still not made a water resistant Kindle, no doubt the only ace they have yet to play to improve on this brilliant device, I look forward to endless hours or reading on Amazons ace in the hole, well done.

Finally a worthy replacement for good old Kindle Keyboard

I have had my Kindle Keyboard for a number of years and I could simply not depart from the physical page turn buttons. Despite all the lines of kindles being released over the years, I stubbornly kept my KK - even though backlight was a feature I really wanted (my partner has Paperwhite and I was always jealous he could read virtually anywhere and in any light conditions). I simply could not face the idea of sticking my fingers onto a screen - I have a bit of OCD with the phone, continuously wiping it so that it's perfectly clean, I did not want the same on my kindle. I nearly bought Voyage, but reviews from people saying that the page turning on it is not quite as good as on KK made me reconsider and I decided against it. I wanted proper physical buttons, and nothing else would do.

I joked throughout the years "amazon, why don't you want my money" - and it seems they finally listened. Yes, Oasis price is excessive. Yes, it should be waterproof (and DEFINITELY should have adaptive light) given the price. But no, I do not regret buying it, and I justify it by having saved the money through the years by not buying interim models. It's absolutely lovely to use. I once again started reading all the time - at some point I stopped taking my KK everywhere as it was a bit too much to carry in my handbag for a short daily commute - now my Oasis is always with me as it's so light and tiny - but not at a cost of screen size. The backlight is incredibly useful. The page turn buttons work just right (although I can't work out why by default they don't work same direction as in KK - thankfully there is a switch).

If you're an old KK user, thinking if it's worth it, the real questions are: are you still using your current kindle all the time. If not, perhaps Oasis will give you back the joy of reading. It definitely did it for me.

If you've never had a kindle, and you're not too fussy about the physical buttons or the size, frankly, I'd go for Paperwhite. It's a lovely piece of kit too (my partner has it) - and the price is much more appealing.

    Less than perfect points -

    1. Battery life without the charger cover is average

    2. Cover though attractive does not protect the device

    3. Page refresh is noticeable. At this price point you would expect it to be seamless.

    The perfect points

    1. Without the cover = Feather light

    2. Small = First Kindle you could carry in your pocket

    3. Screen = clearest and brightest of any Kindle.

    4. Best overall e book reading experience compared to anything else.

Conclusion = Not perfect and at the price point charged, the page refresh being slightly sluggish is disappointing.

The price for many will be off-putting and in all honesty the marginal improvement's over the paperwhite do not justify this. The two tier charging solution is imaginative but battery life for the main unit should still be longer than it is.

But this is the best lit e reader screen currently available and the balance of the incredibly light main Kindle unit in the hand (due to the thick ridge) is the closest an e reader has come to achieving the aim of Amazon to make the delivery device effectively disapear.

I used to use a basic Kindle and I am familiar with the paperwhite (my mother has one) but I resisted the paperwhite and the voyage. My rationale for splurging on the Oasis is because of the money I have saved by not buying every Kindle model out there. And as I sit with my almost supernaturally light Oasis , Marveling at it's compact elegance. In Quiet moments I can almost convince myself that I made the right choice.

    Kindle Oasis

Having had most of the previous Kindles I was a little hesitant about this one because it is pricey. However after taking the plunge I find it a delight to use. The page turning is very easy and it is great that it can be rotated for left or right hand use. I use it without the cover and it is so much lighter and compact. It is great for reading in either bright sunlight or in the dark as the backlight compensates. It is better than the Voyage in that respect though the definition of the print is the same.

The cover is great. before when I travelled I used to put the Kindle in an envelope but its own case is so much better and the idea of it being a battery backup is good. However I am not yet sure about the battery life. I was admitted to hospital and after reading three books the battery died (about 14 hours) and I am sure I used to get more life out of my Voyage but I might be wrong and perhaps the battery wasn't fully charged when I went in though I thought it was. So battery life remains to be seen though normally it wouldn't be a problem if I had my charger with me.

So yes it is expensive but for a good reading experience I think it is worth it and it is very ortable, fitting into a pocket with no trouble.

Just another update to reduce the rating to 1 Star.

Now i only have about 20-30 mins of reading time without the cover and about 1.5 hours with the cover.

Amazon refuses to replace this damaged unit as they state i should just keep the battery cover on.

Really unhappy with the service and product

    ---

The more I use this Oasis the less satisfied I am.

    Pro's

    1. Really Light

    2. bevel for holding is fantastic

    3. Rotation works very well and very handy

    Con's

    1. Battery Life

    2. Battery Life

For a voracious reader such as myself the last thing I ever worried about with a Kindle (i've had 5 and bought 3 more for family from various Amazon stores) is the battery life.

With Oasis you would be lucky to get through a standard novel without having to recharge!

    3. The cover is very basic and very irritating to read with.

Unfortunately if you want to fly more than 4-5 hours and read you will need to keep the kindle cover on, otherwise the battery will be depleted.

    4. Construction

Very flimsy and I now use my daughters' kindle to travel with as the Oasis wouldn't make a long business trip without pampering.

All in all some great features offset by terrible battery life and very poor construction. I've been a kindle fan for a very long time. Since purchasing this, when strangers ask me on the plane about Oasis versus the rest, I tell them to go paperwhite or wait for Gen 3/4 of Oasis before upgrading.

This is the second Oasis I've had. First was DOA and shocking returns policy from Amazon meant it was over three weeks before the new one was shipped. Here is a hint. Don't call Kindle helpline. Go direct to Amazon.

I have had nothing but extremely / fantastic service from Amazon in the past so this new policy was a real shocker.

Not quite the reading panacea I was hoping for....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 May 2016
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.
Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

The Kindle Oasis is not quite the reading panacea I was hoping for.... When I first read the press coverage on announcement, I immediately thought this Kindle would be the one that would finally stop me buying the latest and greatest Amazon offering year-after-year for a great many years and I put in my pre-order.

My big problem has always been in ergonomics.

Ergonomically, the Oasis is a good ‘idea’, but for me it’s still not comfortable. I still find my little finger being needed to support the bottom of the device, which is just uncomfortable after a while. And the ‘block’ which houses the guts of the device and the physical page turning buttons, for me, just isn’t substantial enough. I find it very awkward to grip, and it feels quite tentative holding it, like it wants to slip out of my grip at any time.

The awkwardness of holding it un-cased ends up giving me a bit of cramp after a while.

Using it with the case (which feels lovely and well made) is a bit better, but then you lose the benefit that the ‘grippable zone’ (‘spine’) gives, and you instead have a more uniform back (like a standard design eReader) plus you now have the extra weight to contend with.

The Oasis, then, is not yet a good enough step toward ‘letting the reader forget the confines of the technology that they are holding, and just get immersed in the content’. Not to me at least.

That said, it’s still better than all other Kindles. It’s lighter, has slightly enhanced screen/lighting tech over all other Kindle devices, has longer battery (with the case), more fonts (for now, until the others get an OTA) and has slightly faster system performance.

As for the price, I think people have very short memories. Early Kindles were hundreds of pounds, and were the reserve of the few.

Look around the Jubilee line on a Tuesday morning in 2008, and maybe a handful of people would be using eReaders. Look today, and a fair 70% of people would be reading on a Kindle because they’re now, in their basic form, a very compelling (almost loss-leading) price.

In terms of the upper-end technology, Amazon are clearly making headway toward a place where we might just have the e-Ink screen in our hands, but to do that, they’ll have to reset the market every now and again, otherwise their high market share/low market growth products (those loss-leaders) will run out of steam and they won’t have a ready developed product that can continue to drive the technology incline.

It’s also true to say that a large percentage of people have switched from reading on a dedicated eReader to reading on an iOS or Android device. This can and does work quite well too, and Amazon don’t care really – they care mostly that you are buying books from them, not so much how you are consuming them. So you have to weigh up if a dedicated eReading device is even generally worth it for you.

For me it is, and always will be. And the Oasis is the best eReader (a lot of) money can buy right now. As someone who avidly reads, and reads only on an eReader, it makes sense to have the best, and I can afford it (bully for me I know…).

I can’t possibly say if this Kindle is right for everyone… I guess the acid test is, offer a random stranger a standard Kindle or an Oasis, without telling them which cost more and ask them which they’d chose – I’m sure they’d go for the Oasis every time – ergo it must be the best device. It’s up to you, then, to decide if the price difference between ‘acceptable’ and ‘the best’ is worth it.

Or to offer an analogy; you’re thirsty, and there are two drink stands in front of you, one sells just water in a cheap plastic cup with a few drops of orange juice for 30p, and another sells one with San Pellegrino water in a glass with a full Florida sun-ripened orange squeezed into it plus ice and a cocktail umbrella for £1.00 – which do you chose?

Despite its shortcomings and price, and the fact I already own a Voyage and a Paperwhite, the Oasis will not get returned, and will be the eBook reader I now use every day for the next couple of years at least – but I can’t say I won’t remain a little disappointed in it every time I put it down. My San Pellegrino orange-juice drink is just a little bitter for my liking on this occasion; but I’m no longer thirsty and it does look good…

Great new addition to the Kindle family

I really didn't need a new kindle as I have been very happy with the Kindle Voyage but as a geek who can't resist the newest version, I had to get one and I am delighted with it.

I love the new physical design that fits so neatly into one hand allowing for the cup of coffee or glass of wine in the other.

It also fits into the small pocket in my backpack which saves fishing around for it.

As a visually impaired person I can vouch for the increased text clarity and much as I love the auto brightness on the Voyage, the light in this one is excellent and the text is much clearer at low levels. I haven't yet experienced the increase in battery life with the charging glove so I can't comment on that but as my kindles have always needed charging more often than most due to the fact that I use the largest font size and read a lot, I am hoping to notice a big difference.

I like the option of the buttons for page turn but I also love the very responsive touch screen and the way the screen extends beyond the reading page (a bit like the sides on the Voyage without the page press). It means I'm not fingering the reading surface.

So far it's well worth the money.

The good? The Kindle Oasis I received is everything people described - a clear, backlit screen, a ‘premium’ lightweight feel and lovely physical buttons. Reaction time isn’t the fastest, but is in keeping with other Kindles of the era. Touchscreen is fine. I have a newer Kindle, but this one just feels nicer.

The bad? Well, the only negative about this version is the micro-USB. You tend to forget there was a world before USB-C connectors, but it’s something that I could live with - I have a few microUSB to USBC adapters that I can take and use with the Kindle to charge. And, that should have been the only negative, but....

The version I got was from Amazon Warehouse, supposedly only with a few cosmetic marks. Oh, the cosmetic marks are there alright, but once again, Amazon Warehouse disappoints... my Oasis has zero battery life - the moment it isn’t on charge, it dies, going from 100% battery to zero instantly. Even the most basic, cursory check would have revealed this state of affairs in the Warehouse, and knocked another chunk off the price. As it is, the item itself is of such quality, I’m thinking of getting an aftermarket battery to replace the one that came in it, unfortunately at the cost of yet another twenty quid, or else returning the item with a big label on the front saying ‘dead battery’. Great product, though, be wary if getting via Warehouse.
