The Terracotta Warriors: A Year of Standing Watch

Thirty-four guardians. One city. A year of looking. There are seasons in a city when something unexpected gathers us. In 2012 and 2013, that gathering took the form of thirty-four Terracotta Warriors standing across Vancouver and Richmond. They were found in shopping centres, on sidewalks, inside lobbies, beneath open skies. Don and I followed them…

The Ball by Victor Gabriel Gilbert

When we look at The Ball by Victor Gabriel Gilbert today, we see grace, civility, refinement. We see polished floors, silk gowns, gloved hands, choreography shaped by etiquette. It feels almost timeless, a sanctuary of order and beauty. And yet, there were moments in history when this very form of gathering, with men and women…

Ludovic Piette: Where Land and Life Meet

At the Edge of Light: Lesser-Known Impressionists In Ludovic Piette’s paintings, life unfolds where land meets dwelling. A stream bends past a farmhouse, geese step across filtered light, figures pause near water’s edge. Trees cast shadows that stretch toward the water, and the house seems not imposed upon the landscape but grown from it. In…

Love Among the Ruins by Edward Burne-Jones

Love Among the Ruins When Poetry Becomes Paint and Paint Refuses to Die There are mornings when my art calendar does more than mark the day. It opens a doorway. Today that doorway was Love Among the Ruins by Edward Burne-Jones, a painting that feels less like an image and more like a quiet vow.…

Welcome to ChasingART, a space for encountering art through reflection, curiosity, and time. Here, art is not something to be explained or concluded. It is something to be stood before, returned to, and gradually understood in its own way. Over the years, I have come to see that art does not live only in galleries or museums. It meets us in many places: on a quiet street, in a cathedral, along a shoreline, in a forgotten corner of a city, or in a moment when something catches our eye and asks us to pause.

Wherever attention is given, art begins. This space grows out of those moments. Here, I follow threads of artists, movements, details, and discoveries. Not to arrive at definitive answers, but to remain in the presence of what has been created. We are often encouraged to move quickly past images, to label them, to compare, to decide.

Here, we take a different path. We pause. We look. We return. We allow time for the story behind the work to emerge, and for our own understanding to deepen. There is no expectation to know, no need to interpret correctly, no pressure to reach a conclusion.

This is a place for looking slowly, for following curiosity, and for discovering how art continues to speak across time, across place, and into our own lives. You are always welcome here.
