Upgrading Heirlooms Plus Heirloom Shields in 5.2

Patch 5.2 Bringing Heirloom Shields And Heirloom Upgrades

Are you ready to make some easy gold off of the new heirloom upgrading system and the new heirloom shields?

Heirloom Upgrade Options

There have been a ton of new Heirloom weapon and armor pieces found within the PTR and the majority of these Heirlooms are part of the new Heirloom Upgrading System coming soon to WoW.  The full list of new Heirlooms coming in Patch 5.2 can be found here.  Currently the older Heirlooms are only useable up to level 80 and the upgrade system will allow them to be used up to level 85.

Here's how the Heirloom Upgrading System works:
  • You must have the original 1-80 heirloom.
  • You visit the vendor selling the new 1-85 heirlooms.
  • You pay with the old heirloom plus an additional justice points cost for the upgrade.
  • You receive the new upgraded 1-85 heirloom.
So you can now use the new and improved heirloom for leveling up to level 85, but there is something not quite so obvious at first glance.

PRO-TIP:  You will be trading in your older version heirloom when you purchase the new heirloom upgrade, which means anyone who upgrades to the new heirloom is going to have to re-enchant their heirlooms.

Cha-Ching!  This is great for anyone who is in the market of selling twink / best-in-slot heirloom enchants.  If you are going to be a buyer of a new heirloom enchant, go ahead and grab the ones you will need before the increased demand leads to increased prices.  If you are a seller of heirloom enchants, start drying up your server's market for any hard to find materials for the best-in-slot heirloom enchants.  Start limiting your competition's ability to stockpile ahead of the upgrade changes by getting the jump on them now.

2 New Shields Are Coming Also

EDIT: Patch 5.2 - The Heirloom Shields were a late scratch and didn't make it into the game in Patch 5.2!

The first ever heirloom shields to be added to the game, will be the upcoming Flamescarred Draconian Deflector (tank) and the Weathered Observer's Shield (caster).  These will be the first Heirloom Shields added to the game and I would expect the sales of the best-in-slot shield enchant to improve even better than it already is.  The Enchant Shield - Vitality is still best-in-slot for both the tanking and caster shields, as it provides +10 Stamina & +10 Spirit.

I've sold hundreds of Enchant Shield - Vitality enchants and I have never crafted a single one myself.  This enchant is one of the best examples I can ever give of an item that gets mass produced during profession leveling, then dumped for stupid cheap on the auction house at well below the crafting cost and actual value of the item.  I constantly find these on the AH for less than 1 gold (despite the hefty crafting cost), buy them all out - no matter how many, then flip for 75-125 gold.  (75 gold each if I have a lot, then 125 gold each as stock dwindles)

Be sure to check out an older post from a couple years ago on the very topic as I go into more detail there, but I 'm not wanting to repeat myself too much on this post.

Large Brilliant Shards & Small Radiant Shards

Keep Your Eyes Peeled For Cheap Enchanting Shards

Keep Your Eyes Peeled For Cheap Shards

Any Enchanter who has ran a successful low end Enchanting business, understands the importance of stocking up on cheap raw Enchanting materials prior to any new expansion releases.  Especially when a new expansion drops, there is an increased demand for Twink enchants, BoA Best-in-Slot Enchants, and quality leveling enchants.  The launch of a new expansion is a great time to sell low end enchants for all of the new characters, new players, and new BoA gear bought by older players for their new characters.

Right now is the prime time to get stocking up on two of the required Enchanting materials because you won't want to run out of the best Enchants to sell during the first month of the upcoming Mists of Pandaria expansion.  Whenever a new expansion brings in the waves of new players, new characters, and fresh BoA gear, I always wish I had more Small Radiant Shards and Large Brilliant Shards.  Stocking up ahead of time allows me to keep from battling on the auction house for the materials to keep my Enchanting gold making business up and running.

Right now you may be able to find a lot of Large Brilliant Shards for cheaper than normal.  Why?  Well, with Patch 5.0.4 the conquest points were all convereted to honor points, so there are a lot of players with a surplus over the 4000 honor point cap.  Any Enchanter should know they can turn those honor points into Large Radiant Shards rather cheaply and a lot of non-gold making Enchanters will do just that.  Many will turn to the auction house to sell their Enchanting materials raw, instead of saving them to use on demand spiked Enchants in a few weeks.
With the addition of Monks in Mists of Pandaria, you can expect hefty sales of the +15 Agility to Weapon and +25 Agility to 2 Handed Weapon Enchants and both take Large Brilliant Shards.

So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for cheap Shards and stock up for use in a few weeks, when you make gold off of all the new WoW characters.

Top 4 Items To Unload Before WoW Patch 5.0.4

Items To Get Rid Of Before WoW Patch 5.0.4

The Mists of Pandaria pre-patch is less than a week away and Patch 5.0.4 will be updated to live WoW servers on Tuesday, August 28th.  That leaves us with less than 6 days to continue to prepare for the big changes coming with the new patch.  As gold makers in WoW, we need to be on the ball and take special care to unload some of the items that are going to see a massive drop in value or are going to become completely worthless because of these new changes.  Let's take a look at some stuff to unload ahead of the big pre-patch.

1)  Blackfallow Ink - Convert all of your Blackfallow Ink into all of the other inks that are using for Glyph crafting.  With the pre-patch comes the change to the Inscription ink traders, so don't get caught with a bunch of Blackfallow Ink and no way to trade them down.  This change will reward those of us who prepared ahead of time and will penalize those who didn't.  Even if you plan on selling crafted items that require Blackfallow Ink, you should still convert all that you have.  Once the vendor no longer takes those inks for converting down to the other inks, the prices are going to drop even farther.

2)  Relics, Librams, Idols, Hunter Melee Weapons & Non-Hunter Ranged Slot Items - The Relic, Libram, Idol, Wand, Ranged Weapon slot is being removed.  Wands are moving to the main hand weapon slot and Hunters will still use ranged weapons, but will no longer have melee weapons as well.  Don't get tricked into grabbing those nice + agility items, as part of your Bargain Blues Stockpiling, that won't be able to be equipped by Rogues, Monks, or Druids.  If you have been crafting relics or other items to disenchant, make sure to get them all disenchanted prior to the patch.  If you don't disenchant them ahead of time, you run the risk of the items turning grey or being removed alltogether.  Plan ahead.  Also get rid of any ranged weapons (crossbow, bow, gun) that you were hoping to sell to levelers, unless they are useable by Hunters.  No one else will have a ranged weapon slot, so those tanking guns are going to be useless.  Dump them or Disenchant them.  Then when the patch drops, keep an eye out for good Disenchant fodder as any crossbow, bow, or gun without Hunter stats will be worthless as gear.

3)  Enchanted Thorium Blades - Along the same lines as those items above, but worth it's own mention.  Enchanted Thorium Blades have long been the go to craftable item from producing our own Greater Eternal Essences and Illusion Dust.  Get them made and Disenchanted ahead of the patch so you don't run the risk of being stuck with a bunch of near useless Enchanted Thorium Bars or Enchanted Thorium Blades that may turn grey on Patch day.  Also keep an eye out for plummeting Enchanted Thorium Bars on the auction house after the patch, if you have a use for them.  I will be buying up the cheap Enchanted Thorium that gets dumped to use for a niche market of mine, Whitesoul Helms (for dungeon running Paladin Healers).

4)  Nightmare's Tear - With the removal of the Relic slots, the Nightmare's Tear is going to pretty much worthless.  There won't be any more prismatic gem slots to fool players into foolishly slotting them with Nightmare's Tears.  Dump all your Nightmare's Tears and Dragon's Eyes now.

So these are the top 4 things I'm making sure to dump prior to the big pre-patch 5.0.4 on this coming Tuesday.  You have been warned too, so don't get caught with your pants on the ground!

Scribes Rejoice - MoP Changes To Head & Shoulder Enchants

Another Gold Making Option For Scribes

Today there was some pretty big news released by Ghostcrawler in a blue post, regarding some major changes coming in the World of Warcraft expansion, Mists of Pandaria.  Blizzard is removing head enchants from the game and is also changing how shoulder enchants are acquired for your gear.

Ghostcrawler Explains Head & Shoulder Enchant Changes In MoP
We will no longer be having to grind reputation for either head or shoulder enchants in Mists of Pandaria.  Head Enchants are being removed completely and the Shoulder Enchants are going to remain in the game, but will now be made by the Inscription profession.  Scribes everywhere are already rejoicing as this will be an additional way to make gold with your Scribe in Mists of Pandaria.  Every single character will be wanting to purchase and use the Shoulder Enchants.

Think of these new Inscription crafted Shoulder Enchants just like the Leatherworking & Tailoring crafted Leg Armor Enchants.  Almost every character uses Leg Armor Enchants and they have historically been great markets for gold making due to the constant demand.  Shoulder Enchants potentially could be just as profitable, but I do have one fear.  The Inscription Glyph market has been the most cut-throat market on damn near every server.  I hope those undercutting philosophies don't spill over into the Shoulder Enchant market as well.

This could be the last bit of encouragement you need to dust off that mid level Scribe and get that Inscription skill maxed and ready for Mists of Pandaria gold making.

Do you see this change as another benefit for Scribes or a hassle for consumers?

Transformations and Shatters For Profit And Savings

Nexus Crystals for Nexus Transformation

Transformations and Shatters

Maelstrom Shatter

Enchanting has some nice utility options for converting less used Enchanting materials into more useful ones.  Right now there is a lot of buzz over the new Maelstrom Shatter that was added to WoW with Patch 4.3.  The Maelstrom Shatter recipe allows 1 Maelstrom Crystal to be shattered into 2 Heavenly Shards by an Enchanter.  Shattering Maelstrom Crystals can be a source of profit, if you are able to get your Maelstrom Crystals for less than the cost of 2 Heavenly Shards.  Or instead of selling the Shards for profit, you can use the Maelstrom Shatter as a source for lowering your crafting cost of Enchanting scrolls.  Or, if you are like me, you do both:  Sell Shards when the prices spike and also utilize the Shatters for cheaper material sources.

Abyssal Shatter

Abyssal Shatter is another Enchanting option for Shattering Abyss Crystals into Greater Cosmic Essences or Infinite Dust.  This can often be a cheap source of both Dusts and Essences depending on how cheap you can snatch up those Abyss Crystals.  When purchasing Creater Cosmic Essences and Infinite Dust, don't forget to check the prices of Abyss Crystals too.  I little extra work can often save you a nice chunk of gold.

Nexus Transformation and Void Shatter

Nexus Transformation allows an Enchanter to Transform 1 Nexus Crystal into 1 Small Prismatic Shard.  Three Small Prismatic Shards can be crafted into 1 Large Prismatic Shard, which is used in many more Enchanting recipes.  So the cost of 3 Nexus Crystals should be equal to the cost of 1 Large Prismatic Shard.  You can often get the Nexus Crystals for dirt cheap, as evidenced in the top image, where I was buying Nexus Crystals for .59 gold each, which converted to a crafting cost of 1.77 gold for a Large Prismatic Shard.  At the same time, the Large Prismatic were 17 gold each on the auction house.  (Note: this isn't shown on TUJ data because I bought them all out in between TUJ hourly scans.)   So I bought the few 17g ones and made many more for much cheaper, since I needed a lot for the Enchants I was crafting at the time.

On the other hand, you can also get Large Prismatic Shards from Void Shatter.  The Enchanting recipe Void Shatter created 2 Large Prismatic Shards from 1 Void Crystal.  So when looking for the best price on Large Prismatic Shards, you should consider the prices of Large Prismatic Shards themselves, Small Prismatic Shards, Nexus Crystals, and Void Crystals.  Understanding the relationships between all 4 will allow you to find cheaper materials and crafting costs, which in turn will lead you to more profitable sales.  You can also play around with the conversions and profit from forming more expensive materials to sell from the cheaper material options.

Making higher profits and finding lower crafting costs go hand in hand with being a more efficient gold maker in World of Warcraft.

Patch 4.3: The Super Secret Recipe To Flip

It's A Secret To Everybody
The Patch 4.3 Added Super Secret Recipe

Anytime there is a new World of Warcraft patch, there are things that go can undiscovered and unnoticed.  If you are one of the first players to discover a way to make gold that no one else knows about, then you pretty much have a liscense to print gold until the discovery goes public.  This has definately been the case with the Patch 4.3 Hour of Twilight patch changes.  There was a recipe added to a pre-existing vendor that has pretty much flown under the radar, until today.  Those of us that knew about the new addition have been keeping it a secret amongst a few of us major gold makers.  I've made an easy 6k profit from flipping this recipe in just a few days.

Why keep it secret?  Well, I didn't find this awesome Enchanting recipe gold mine all by myself.  I was tipped off and promised to keep it a secret until the news broke.  And guess who I learned this great tip from?  @Twizzletank from Rep Grind Radio of all people!  Well done Sir!  Twizz was out in the Stormspire, Netherstorm gathering pets to flip from the Exotic Pet Dealer.  He wandered over to the Exotic Weapons Dealer, also in Stormspire, looking for items to flip to profit from the new Transmogrification.  And there it was it all it's glory.  The Enchanting recipe for Enchant Weapon - Executioner, a blue Enchanting recipe for less than 6 gold, is now available from the Exotic Weapons Dealer in Stormspire.  Enchant Weapon - Executioner was added to this vendor in Patch 4.3.  The Enchanting recipe is unbound when purchased and is sellable on the World of Warcraft auction house.

I sold 6 at 600 gold each, only listing 1 at a time to keep the appearance of it being a rare drop recipe.  After one would sell, I would immediately tossed up a new one.  I had the market completely to myself for a few days and made a nice chunk of easy gold.  I raised the price to 700 gold and sold a few more before a single competitor caught on.  Now I've diversified and am selling on the Alliance auction house as well, already have sold 2 today for 750 gold.  There still aren't a ton of players that are clued into this new change and this easy gold making niche market.

Twizz told me about this awesome vendor flip and I've made some serious gold turning around 5 gold into 600-750 gold multiple times.  The guys I shared this top secret information with have also been reporting crazy profits, while no one else was aware of this pattern being added to the Stormspire vendor.  Thanks Twizz for the awesome tip!  Too bad someone had to open their fat mouth on the Consortium Forums about this recipe already.  Then this morning MMO-Champion reports the change as well.  You better get in while the gettin' is good, before everyone knows this secret.

It was a great secret while it lasted.

When Auctioneer Lies... I Turn A Profit

Auctioneer Market Value Isn't Always Correct

Regardless of what auctioneering add-on you are using, your displayed market value is only as good as the average of your scans.  If you are not scanning the auction house, then obviously your market value data is going to be incorrect.  If you are constantly scanning the auction house multiple times per day, then you are going to have more accurate auctioneer data to base your decisions on what to sell on the auction house in World of Warcraft.  The more scans you perform over time, the closer your data will be to becoming accurate.  A website like theunderminejournal that is based off of hourly scans is going to have a more detailed and accurate breakdown of what is closer to the true market value over time.  Scanning hourly is much more accurate than scanning twice per day.

There are times when the market value given on your tooltip is accurate from a historical data collection standpoint, yet is completely off for the actual value of an item.  Remember prior to Cataclysm, when I told you to stock up on the low level Vanilla WoW greens that were turning blue in Cataclysm?  Well, those items had been scanned as green junk low value items for years.  When they were changed to blue items and gained upgraded stats, we made a killing selling those now blue leveling items.

If you think back to the beginning of Cataclysm when they were selling to all of the fresh characters leveling in the new WoW Cataclsym content, these items were still showing up on the tooltip with the low market value that had been scanned multiple times prior to the change.  We had to manually jack the prices up on these fresh high demand blue gear pieces.  Many of the items I had bought while green (prior to the Cata change) for less than 2 or 3 gold. I was then able to unload them( once they turned into their blue equivalents) for 60-125 gold each.  Even after the change into blue items, anyone who just used the drag and drop auto-price fill posting method, would have been mistakenly posting those items at the old market value.  Even after the change, I was able to snatch up a few underpriced pieces of the blue gear.

Enchant Shield Vitality

Here is an example of another item that currently can be seen posted on the auction house listed at far below the actual value.  Because of the same scanned market value of the old version of the scroll, many leveling Enchanters will craft 5-10 Enchant Shield: Vitality scrolls while leveling their Enchanting Profession.  They just toss them onto the auction house at whatever Auctioneer tells them it is worth, but that market value is way off from the true value of the Enchant.

Enchant Shield: Vitality is now Best-in-Slot for any shield carrying twink as it now gives +10 Stamina and +10 Spirit.  Many times these enchants can be found for well below the cost to craft, since Auctioneer and other add-ons still base their market value off of the old value when no one bought them.  I recently found 40 of the Enchant Shield: Vitality scrolls on the auction house all for under 1 gold each.  I bought every last one of them and reposted a few on the auction house, which sold for 75 gold each.  These do require some expensive Enchanting materials to craft after all (4 Illusion Dust and a Greater Eternal Essense).  I continually toss a handful of them up on the auction house and the sales continue to come in.  I also keep an eye out for any more that show up at stupid low prices so I can buy them up and sweep them out of the hands of potential competitors.

Buying Poorly Priced Scrolls (Click to Enlarge)
Selling Scrolls For Correct Price (Click to Enlarge)
I paid 45 gold for 42 scrolls.
2 Scrolls sold for 75 gold each.
That leaves me with plenty profit already and 40 more scrolls to sell.

Check into this on your server, especially if you have a nice twink population.  Remember to always use the most important add-on of all above all other WoW add-ons.

Reader Submission: Fire Prisms, Heavenly Shards, & Gems

WoW Gold Tips From Loyal Readers
Reader Submission On Fire Prisms, Gems, and Heavenly Shards
Hi Cold!
As all AH goblins I too found myself in a bit strange situation during the summer: I have some stockpiles and plans to use it, but my buyers are swimming on a beach, far from the WoW AH and from my sales.
While thinking about a solution (and reading great gold blogs like yours), I was just starring at my big pile of Elementium Ore. I must say, I was a bit mad at myself and while I was bored, I started to prospect my ores. I found myself with dozens of stacks of uncut gems and did not know what to do with them. Okay, cut the blue ones, stockpile some greens for the JC dailies (now I have enough Zephyrites for almost a year ahead, even if the JC daily is "Nibbler! No!" every day), maybe make some Fire Prisms (thanks on that tip tho!).
"What to do with those greens for which I simply don't have the space to store?" - I asked myself. Well, I had plenty of time and remembered those WotLK times, when the vendor price for some JC items was bigger than their material cost. Of course, this was not a big deal, you could only profit 0.5 - 1g per cut, but hey! that's more than nothing. I made from all of the greens some rings and other jewelries and started to vendor them. Here came one thing that I didn't think on before: I forgot that there's a chance for a blue item to be crafted! Of course I immidiately started mass producing these rings/necks and sent all of the blue ones to my enchanter for Disenchanting! I've got a lot of Heavenly Shards and Small Heavenly Shards, the former selling around 100-120g, the later for 25-40g (!) on my realm. I'm not such a big AH goblin as the gold bloggers, but I made like 8-10k profit (not sales, that's the raw profit!) just alone from these Shards.
The green rings/necks vendor for 5.5g each, need a Jeweler's Setting (1g50s before rep discounts), so if you happen to find ANY uncut Cata green gems (except for Zephyrite ofc) around 3g (which probably you won't on the AH), you are still profiting ~1g per ring/neck and you have a chance for a Small/Heavenly Shard for even more.
I didn't make complete calculations yet (spreadsheet incoming soon!), but from my experience, the equilibrium price for an Elementium Ore is around 1.5-1.7g each (30-35g per stack), with the prices on my realm.
Don't get me wrong, this whole thing is not new discovery, but many people might forget about this market during the summer and thought I share it with you (and your readers, if you happen to post about it).

Please let me ask you two questions:1. Is there a way or do you know about a way to mass produce Small / Heavenly Shards, except the method described above? Of course I don't want to flood my market to drive the prices to low, but from the Prospecting business I simply can't get enough of it.
2. Is there a way to efficiently store Fire Prisms? I'm preparing for the epic gem market (which might not even happen with the last content patch being the next one, 4.3), but as Fire Prisms are unique, I have to store them in my mailbox, constantly mailing them from one toon to another, which is a bit inconvinient.

Thanks in advance!KhasDylar
Cold's Response

Thanks for the Reader Submission KhasDylar!  You remind us of some important gold tips.  Everyone is so focused on the current hot money makers that we often forget to check back to the older strategies we've used previously or in older expansions.

Here are the answers to your questions:

Heavenly Shards
1)  Heavenly Shards are going to come from disenchanting.  I often search for items that disenchant into a Heavenly Shard right on the auction house in WoW.  Buy it, disenchant it, and toss the Heavenly Shard back on the auction house for a profit.  Another option for crafting items to disenchant yourself is Stormforged Shoulders (made by Blacksmiths).

Fire Prisms
2)  Fire Prism storage doesn't have to be such a space and time consuming process for you.  Try tossing them into a bank or guild bank.  The Fire Prisms are unique so you can't have more than 1 on you, but you CAN toss them in the bank along with others.  That's how the last reader who submitted his speculative ideas on Fire Prisms storage for epic gems keeps his stored.

Got a reader submission idea or a topic idea for me?  Send them in and receive full credit, if your submissions, guest posts, or topic ideas make it to the live blog.

Reader Response To Yesterday's Post

Blogger Warning Revisited

Reader Response To Yesterday's Post

I read your article about some bloggers using their wiles to control the market. One post from justmytwocopper.org sprang to mind.

The post is called enchant gloves gatherer and pattern herbalist leather gloves. Read it Here. After reading the post and being horde, I thought wow! If I could snag that pattern and use my leatherworker to craft it, I would be one of the only horde on my server with the pattern. I don't play Alliance at all, so a cross faction trade is not feasible for me. I posted in trade for a couple weeks with no results, many had never even heard of the pattern, so I regularly checked both my faction and neutral ah for the pattern. Finally! I snagged the pattern and immediately made several pair of these gloves to make back the paltry 400g I paid for them.

My next step was to have a friend make me some gatherer enchants. I had my macro for trade ready advertising a plus 10 herbalism glove, along with plus five mining and skinning. To my dismay I was so caught up in the brilliant scheme I had read about, I didn't realize that it was impossible to put gatherer on the herbalist gloves; the ilvl of the gloves was too low. So gatherer plus herbalist gloves equals impossible. But I did find the rare and elusive enchant gloves advanced herbalism which does work on the herbalist gloves. But even after selling in trade with the enchant, even after enticing taurens with a massive plus 25 herb bonus with my gloves and their racial, I wasn't able to get over 150 gold for the set.

The post also mentions that the glove enchant gatherer is sellable for around 150 gold if there isn't any competition. On my server Eonar, gatherer sells for between 15 and 60 gold on average. So with that post the site went from being a trusted source in my opinion, to something I read and quickly research the posters info and reference it with other sites before I act on it. Of course I probably should have done that anyway : p

Thanks for the interesting post,

R.C.

Thanks R.C. for the response.  As I stated in yesterday's post, "Play smart and research your markets independant of what you read on gold blogs."  With tools like The Undermine Journal, we can double check references as well as compare various ideas within the most important factor: Our Own Server.  Some strategies will work on one server and will fail horribly on another.

WoW Auction House Tip: Otherworldly Bags

WoW Auction House Tip: Otherworldly Bag
Otherworldly Bag

Crafting profession bags is usually a profitable market to enter into on the WoW auction house and the Otherworldly Bag is no different.  The Otherworldly Bag is a 36 slot Enchanting Bag that is crafted by the Tailoring Profession and becomes available to leveling tailors at Tailoring skill level 480.  I sell them for around 400 gold each, but TUJ is showing that's on the lower end of what many other servers' WoW auction houses are seeing.

I originally skipped over crafting many of these on my main tailor.  She was leveling early in Cataclysm, so she was making the gathering profession bags as opposed to these, since the demand for gathering bags was much higher at the start of Cataclysm.  Recently I have leveled my secondary Tailor far enough to be able to craft Dreamcloth for easy skill ups and I made a handful of these Otherworldly Bags on the grind up.  As is already known, I don't believe in powerleveling just for speed purposes because it is usually a waste of gold.  I stick to a common commodity crafting approach, which the Otherworldly Bags fit right into.

The beauty of these bags is that they are a Cataclysm top end Enchanting bag and they take some old Wrath Enchanting materials to craft.  That's right!  These are a great way to unload some of those old Wrath Enchanting materials that you may have hidden in your guild bank.

An Otherworldly Bag requires:
  • 9 Bolts of Embersilk Cloth
  • 1 Dream Shard
  • 4 Greater Cosmic Essence
  • 8 Hypnotic Dust
So dust off some of those old Wrath materials and put them to good use:  sales on the WoW auction house.

Heavenly Shard Shortage and The Enchanting Boom

Heavenly Shards - Oh My Heavens!
The Heavenly Shard Shortage

Heavenly Shards are seeing a major shortage across many World of Warcraft servers right now.  The price of a single Heavenly Shard has shot up to around 150 gold each on my server and many servers are seeing similar price increases.  There are many factors that have contributed to the increase in prices of Heavenly Shards and other Cataclysm Enchanting materials, like Greater Celestial Essenses.

Why There Is A Heavenly Shard Shortage?
  • Less Obsidium and Elementium Ores are available on the auction house.
  • Those ores that are available are highly priced.
  • Vendor prices of Cataclysm gems have been nerfed.
  • All 3 of the above factors have led to less players shuffling Cataclysm Ores.
  • Less shuffling of Ores means less enchanting materials being created.
  • Patch 4.2 introduced a lot of new gear upgrades for many players, which caused a demand spike for many enchants and Enchanting materials.
  • The high demand for enchants has dried up a lot of the previous stockpiles of Heavenly Shards.
  • Less players running dungeons as they are busy with the Firelands Daily quests and new raid content.
Together these factors have led to both a shortage of Heavenly Shards as well as a price increase for the ones that are listed on the auction house.  The shortage is the direct result of less Heavenly Shards coming into the market combined with the increased demand for Enchants.

The Enchanting Boom

The Enchanting market has exploded since the release of World of Warcraft Patch 4.2.  Patch 4.2 brought us the Firelands Daily quests and the new Firelands vendors.  Both the quest rewards and the vendor sold items are nice high item level gear rewards, which are not hard to obtain.  This has lead to a great increase in the number of players buying Enchants off of the auction house.  This increase in Enchanting sales will continue as players unlock the various phases of the Firelands vendors that provide nice enchantable gear, which will be upgrades to many of the casual players.  So the nice wave of sales will continue for a while as the player base is still unlocking the various phases of the new Firelands vendors.

Many of the higher end enchants take Heavenly Shards to create.  The high end enchants are the ones that have really seen an explosion of sales and with the increased price of Heavenly Shards, we are able to gouge the price of the Enchants as well.  The new phased Firelands vendors that are starting to be unlocked offer not only the new recipes, but also offer some nice high item level epic gear for purchase as well.  With so many of these new items being such a high item level and seeing immediate use, many players are opting to go with the high end enchants as it may be a while before this new epic gear is replaced.  I myself am selling far more of the high end enchants than I originally expected and those great sales are continuing.  I expect this increase of sales to continue for a while as it takes a long time to unlock all of the vendors and some players haven't even started unlocking the vendors and obtaining the easy gear upgrades.  It's definately a good time to be an enchanter, especially if you have Enchating materials stockpiled from your earlier ore shuffling days.

Combating The Heavenly Shard Price Increase

With the increase prices of Heavenly Shards, comes increased Enchant Scroll crafting costs if you are purchasing your materials off of the auction house.  Currently there are 4 main ways to obtain Heavenly Shards.
  • Crafting items to disenchant for Heavenly Shards.
  • Converting 3 Small Heavenly Shards into Heavenly Shards
  • Buying items off the auction house to disenchant into Heavenly Shards.
  • Running dungeons with an Enchanter and disenchanting gear that drops.
The best ways to obtain your own Heavenly Shards are through Disenchanting.  The least expensive craftable item to create and disenchant into a guaranteed Heavenly Shard is the Stormforge Shoulders.  Another profitable option is to purchase poorly priced items off of the auction house and Disenchant them yourselves.  If you are in a guild with the Bountiful Bags guild perk, then you can make some serious cash Disenchanting items and either selling the Heavenly Shards raw or using them in enchants to sell for even more profit.

I like to search the auction house for gear that has a 100% guaranteed Heavenly Shard from Disenchanting.  If you have an add-on that shows what the items will Disenchant into, then it is pretty easy.  Just do an auction house search for blue weapons and armor level 80-85 and buy anything that is cheaper than the current Heavenly Shard prices on your WoW server.  This is a great strategy for selling Heavenly Shards as the raw materials, if you are unable to make the high end Enchant Scrolls.

Anyone gouging Heavenly Shard prices on your server?
Are you seeing crazy profits from selling Enchant Scrolls too?

New Firelands Vendors Offer Auctioning Opportunities

The Firelands Vendors

Now that players are moving past the initial Firelands Daily quests and have unlocked both the Druids of the Talon and the Shadow Wardens quests, many WoW players are moving onto unlocking the new Firelands vendors with their Marks of the World Tree.  Once you have spent the 300 Marks of the World Tree on unlocking both the Druids of the Talon and the Shadow Wardens, you will need 125 more Marks to open each of the next 3 phases.  Each complete quest takes the 125 Marks and unlocks 1 new Molten Front vendor that was previously locked behind phasing.

Phasing Quests and Unlocking Vendors
In addition to offering profession recipes and vanity companions and vanity items, these vendors all 3 offer epic gear.  Many players will be purchasing these epic gear upgrades as soon as each vendor is unlocked.  We want to be able to fully capitalize on this easy to acquire epic gear.  Players will unlock these vendors, buy the gear, then go straight to the auction house to enhance their new gear with belt buckles, enchants, gems and other items.  Let's take a look at what type of gear is available from these vendors and what we should be selling on the auction house to associate with this gear.

Varlan sells mail agility boots, Rogue / Druid leather gloves, and 2 relics.
Damek sells Shaman Boots, Holy Paladin gloves, cloth caster gloves, 3 belts, and plate tanking bracers.
Ayla sells a caster off-hand and 2 relics.

So in total we will be seeing an influx of the following enhanceable items:
  • 4 Relics
  • 1 Caster off-hand
  • Tank bracers
  • 2 Boots (1 Hunter and 1 Shaman)
  • 3 Belts
  • 3 Gloves (1 Rogue / Hunter, 1 Holy Pally, 1 Cloth Caster)
How To Be Prepared On The AH

You want to be providing the common enchants that are going to be added onto these new easily acquired epic item upgrades as well as be fully stocked on the varous gem cuts as many of these items have gem sockets to fill.  One thing I can't stress enough, is providing as many Nightmare's Tear prismatic gems as you can.  All of the Relics contain a prismatic socket and a lot of players still think you need to buy a prismatic gem for a prismatic socket.  I simply cannot find enough Dragon's Eye's to meet the Nightmare Tear demand, even with them selling for 275-300 gold each.  They don't last longer than an hour or so before they are sold out.  Stock up on Ebonsteel Belt Buckles if they are still profitable on your server as there are the 3 epic belts available from these vendors also.  The scrolls +50 Int to an off-hand could also see a slight increase in sales.  Stock up on your standard caster glove enchants and for the Rogue / Hunter glove option don't forget the Wrath Enchant for +20 Agi to gloves.  +50 Dodge and +50 Str both to bracers have also been selling like hotcakes with the easy to obtain tanking bracers available from the Firelands vendors.  Lavawalker to boots is another big mover right now as I am selling 2-3 a night easy.  So take a look at what enchants and enhancements you can create and get to profitting off of all of these vendor bought upgradeable gear.

Frost Lord Ahune Cloak Drops Increase Enchant Sales

Midsummer Fire Festival

The Midsummer Fire Festival is now in full swing on all World of Warcraft gaming servers.  While this WoW holiday is a great time for leveling alts with Midsummer Bonfires, it is also a great time to make some easy gold from those Midsummer bonfires, Fire Festival Dailies (torch tossing and torch throwing), and killing the yearly holiday boss, Frost Lord Ahune.

Cloak Drops From Frost Lord Ahune

With the ease of running the 5 man Holiday Dailies to kill the Frost Lord Ahune, many characters will be getting easy to obtain upgrades for their back gear slot.  These cloaks are not the absolute best available and many main characters already have epic cloaks from reputation purchases with the various Cataclysm factions in World of Warcraft.  The majority of players that will be needing and equipping these new epic cloaks will be alt characters.

Since most of the players equipping these new cloaks will be alts, I wouldn't focus on posting the top end enchants for cloaks.  These alts will be more likely to purchase the next best enchant over the best in slot cloak enchant.  With Patch 4.2 coming soon and new raid content on the horizon, not many players are shelling out the big bucks for enchants or gems.  So this could be a great way to dump off some of the extra enchanting materials you may have stockpiled from all of the obisium ore shuffling.

So take a peek at the auction house and see if you can make some headway into the clock enchants market during the short Midsummer holiday season.

Anyone else seeing sales of upgrade items slacking off as players wait out the new Patch 4.2?

Ideal Alts Series | The Solo Raider & World Boss Killer

Ideal Alts Series Concludes

The awesome World of Warcraft character building series on Ideal Alts comes to an end today.  This will be my last installment for this series.  The alt character templates that I came up with are by no means exactly perfect as these ideas are based on my own personal preferences and ideas.  You may tweek them to meet your exact needs.  Hopefully, they have inspired you to make a new alt, with a specific role.  Or they may have given you some ideas for starting your very first alt character!  The great thing about World of Warcraft is the variety between builds and specs and this is no different with the alt characters in WoW.  So have some fun with a new alt, but plan ahead.  I may eventually do a post about some more Ideal Alt ideas, but I also may be opening the Ideal Alts topic idea up to the other bloggers by using it as the WoW gold blogging carnival topic.

Readers:  Is this a topic that you readers would like to see explored further by various bloggers?
Bloggers:  Sound like a good topic for you to do a post on?

Ideal Alts - The Solo Raider & World Boss Killer

The Solo Raider & World Boss Killer is a super fun alt to play.  This is the type of character I play as my main, although my professions are completely different.  This Ideal Alt actually makes an amazing main character and can be a legitimate high end content raider and can  fulfill the solo raider and world boss killer roles as well.

Role:  The Solo Raider's role is to be able to run old raid content, solo old heroic instances, and kill world bosses all by yourself.  The combination of professions will allow for maximizing your raiding ability as well as maximizing two of the best potential gold making professions in the game.  The Dungeon Running Ideal Alt varies greatly from the Solo Raider.  The dungeon runner can't solo raids and is a support character for dungeon groups (since it's a healer).  The solo raider needs to be able to kill and heal itself somehow or it just won't last.

    Class:  Deathknight - Blood Tank
Some would go with a Paladin, but to me a deathknight blood tank is the better choice.  Stacking mastery will get you a really nice raid tank that can solo the old raids and world bosses with help from no one.  DKs tend to be faster killers than Protection specced Paladins.  Death Strike buffed with stacked Mastery rating, the ability to heal yourself with deathcoils while Lichborne, and the ability to explode a ghoul for a ton of health make this an awesome self healing damage dealing solo spec for the role of farming old raids.  Having an army  of ghouls as well as a single ghoul and a dancing rune weapon are also excellent additions to your arsenal of abilities.  The various cooldowns are great for mitigation when those big raid boss hits come at you.

Race:  Horde - Tauren  /  Alliance - Night Elf
Really, any race would work.  I would lean towards Night Elf for their Quickness ability which gives an overall 2% more chance for mobs to miss you.  That is a nice bonus when facing raid bosses and world bosses.  On the horde side Tauren is nice for the base health increase, which plays well with death strike too.  You could pick another race for their profession bonus, but once your maxed skill, the bonus has less luster.

    Professions:  Jewelcrafting and Enchanting
Enchanting and Jewelcrafting alone are 2 of The Big 3 Professions when used in shuffling, so there is a ton of gold making ability with this combination.  Having 2 of the 3 major shuffling professions on the same character is a huge time saver.  For raiding though, you get extra stats from using the Jewelcrafter only gems and the Enchanter only ring enchantments.  That's a lot of extra Mastery rating to stack to further buff that Death strike.  Enchanting allows you to disenchant anything you come across and both Enchanting and Jewelcrafting allow you access to some of the old patterns / recipes that are BoP or only drop if the profession is present for the kill.

You can also dabble in PvP since you are going to be shuffling items in town for profit.  Shuffling ores takes forever and you can get into the PvP queue while doing your work.  Once you are inside you the battleground you can either help your side try to win the battle (Blood knights are fun and survivable) or you can continue your shuffling inside the battleground while you gain free honor.  Yeah, that won't make you any friends in the battleground, but greedy goblins don't need friends.  You can then turn that free honor in and get some Large Brilliant Shards for your honor or  use that honor to get other enchanting materials from disenchanting items.

Ideal Alt - The Solo Raider & World Boss Killer
    • Night Elf
    • Deathknight Blood Tank
    • Jewelcrafter
    • Enchanter
    • Extra Powerful Gems
    • Extra Ring Enchants
    • High Survivability
    • Get BoP and Prof Only Recipe Drops
    • Farm BoE Epics
    • Can Also Be An Awesome Main

Enchant Gloves - Major Agility | Wrath Enchant Still Sells

    The Wrath Enchant Still Selling

There are still a few enchants from the Wrath of the Lich King era that are still selling on the auction house in World of Warcraft.  One of those old Wrath of the Lich King enchants that is still worth selling as a scroll is the Enchant Gloves - Major Agility enchantment.  The Enchant Gloves - Major Agility scroll adds +20 Agility to a piece of handworn gear.  Who would buy this old Wrath level enchant when there are new enchants from the Cataclysm WoW expansion?

    Hunters
Hunters have very few options for glove enchants.  They can get a Cataclysm enchant for either +50 Haste or +50 Mastery rating, but many hunters still go for the old +20 Agility enchant.  A search over at WoWPopular for hunter glove enchants shows that Haste is the most popular hunter enchant for gloves, winning with 6 stars.  Both the +50 Mastery and +20 Agility enchants are almost as popular with 4 star rankings each for hunters.  There are also a few Feral Druids that could pick up this enchant as well.

So if you are looking for a way to move a few Dream Shards and Greater Celestial Essences, consider adding the Enchant Gloves - Major Agility scroll to your enchanting auction house business.  Or if you are leveling your enchanting skill through the Wrath levels of enchanting, be sure to craft a few of these as part of your common commodity crafting approach to leveling your Enchanting profession.

What other Wrath of the Lich King Enchants are still selling?

    Large Brilliant Shards For Honor

    Large Brilliant Shards

Large Brilliant Shards have become a hot commodity on the auction house.  There just aren't a whole lot of them people created via lower level dungeoneering, so the price has gone up.  The return of the Crusader Enchant dropping again in Eastern Plaguelands could also play a roll in increasing demand for these shards.  There are many other enchants that require Large Brilliant Shards as part of the crafting components for an Enchanter.  If you have a strong twink market on your server, then this list will be even more appealing for you to profit from your Enchanting Profession.

    Profitable Recipes That Require LBSs
    • Enchant Chest - Greater Stats (+4 All Stats)
    • Enchant Weapon - Crusader
    • Enchant Weapon - Mighty Intellect (+22 Int)
    • Enchant Weapon - Mighty Spirit (+20 Spi)
    • Enchant Weapon - Healing Power (+29 SP)
    • Enchant Weapon - Spellpower (+30 SP)
    • Enchant Weapon - Strength (+15 Str)
    • Enchant Weapon - Agility (+15 Agi)
    • Enchant 2-Handed Weapon - Agility (+25 Agi)
How To Get Large Brilliant Shards

My current ways of getting Large Brilliant Shards include:
    • Crafting items like Runecloth Headbands to disenchant.
    • Buying low priced blue gear off the auction house to disenchant.
    • Farming lower level dungeons on my enchanter.
Well, I just did some hunting around in game and have found another great way to get Large Brilliant Shards.  You can now disenchant a lot of the PvP gear available in the capital cities.  The one I have been using is Sergeant's Cloak from the Legacy Armor Quartermaster. The Sergeant's Cloak costs only 55 Honor Points and disenchants to 1 Large Brilliant Shard.  I have been racketting the price of the LBSs up to 75 gold each on my server and they are still selling.  That doesn't even include the sales of scrolls made from even more LBSs.   The PvP cloaks will bind to your character so you must purchase them with your enchanter character.  If you still have some of the Bind on Account honor tokens saved up, then you can send them to your enchanter to use those tokens to convert that honor into gold.

So if you are in a pinch to get more Large Brilliant Shards and have honor to spare, be sure to give the Sergeant's Cloak a try as it is a super easy, efficient way of coverting wasted honor to gold.

Anyone else have a good way to get Large Brilliant Shards?

Enchant Shield - Vitality | New BiS Shield Enchant

    Enchant Shield Vitality

One of the Undocumented Patch 4.1 Changes To Enchanting has been revealed on live World of Warcraft servers.  Previously I mentioned how the + mana per second and + health per second enchants were being changed.

Well there is a new Best in Slot enchant for level 19 sword and board flag runners.  The Enchant Shield - Vitality has changed to now provide +10 Stamina and +10 Spirit, which is better than the previous +7 Stamina - Greater Stamina enchant and the +7 Spirit - Greater Spirit enchant combined.  The materials for the Enchant Shield - Vitality enchantment do require 1 Greater Eternal Essense and 4 Illusion Dust, but those can be obtained through the shuffling of Runecloth Headbands or Enchanted Thorium Blades.

If you have low level twinks on your server, then be sure to make a few of these and keep the auction house stocked.  I am the only one selling these on my server and I am selling them for 75 gold each.  Nice thing is that there were a lot of these on the acution house mispriced by auto posters.  I bought them for 2 gold each and am flipping for a nice profit on the auction house now as the crafting cost is much higher than 2 gold!

So be sure to check your WoW server's auction house first and grab up what you can before everyone realizes this massive increase in value.

Have you found any other odd ball changes that have been bringing you sales?

    Supplying Low Level Characters

Have You Forgotten About The Needs Of Low Level Characters?

Often we are stuck into our routines crafting high end products like belt buckles, flasks, elixirs, high end BOE gear, gems, and enchants.  Well, if you are too focused on just supplying the high level characters in World of Warcraft, then you are omitting some of the profitable markets that cater to the lower level players.

Often the lower level characters are not brand new players.  They often are ran by experienced players who are just seeking a new experience or are a fresh alt working on leveling in Warcraft to add to their list of professions that they have under their belt.  We as gold bloggers often preach about diverisification in your ability to craft within multiple professions.  Some of the these low level characters are products of theat philosophy.  They may be played by an experienced World of Warcraft player who has gold to burn.  These types of players often look to "pimp out" their alt characters with the best gear to help ease the often painful process of leveling yet another character.  Having the best gear means quicker leveling and a faster rise to the requried level needed for maximizing the profession crafting ability.

Other players like to make an actual "twink" character for lower level PvP brackets.  If you are on a server (or battlegroup) with heavy low level PvP activity, then you have some very nice options for expanding your ability to profit from lower level World of Warcraft characters.

    Low Level Niches

    Level 14-15 Shields

Once a player hits level 15, they will have the option to join the Random Dungeon Finder to run dungeons.  We all know that tanks have the shortest wait times to enter the random dungeons, so low level warriors and paladins will be looking for some tank gear once around level 15.  At super low levels it isn't that important to have tank quality gear, but a lot of players will head straight to the auction house to look for a good one handed weapon and a good shield.  Many times this market is completely barren on many servers.  Any low level 14-16 shields are a good option for selling on the auction house.  You can snatch up cheap priced green shields and mark them up for a profit.  Anytime you find a low level shield while questing or runnnig dungeons, save it.  Post it on the auction house and watch it sell to a player wanting to start tanking.

    Level 40 Mail and Plate

At level 40 there are some important gear change overs for many classes.  Warriors and Paladins switch from using mail armor and can now use plate armor.  Shamans and Hunters get to upgrade from wearing leather armor to wearing mail armor.  This is a good market to supply as again there isn't always a nice selection of mail and plate on the auction house around level 40.  Mail items from level 38-42 have always been good movers on the World of Warcraft auction houses for low level players looking for gear upgrades.  Some players will go straight to the auction house once they hit that magic level of 40 just to swap out every piece of gear they have.  You want to be the one selling to these new players.  Unlike with level 14-16 shields, you can craft the plate and mail items that they will be looking to purchase from the auction house in WoW.

    Netherweave Bags

The Netherweave Bag has long been the standard for equipping any low level characters bank and bag slots.  These continue to move at a great volume on a daily basis as there are always going to be new characters created.  This is a staple market for tailoring and is often a great market for any brand new players aspiring to be greedy goblins like the rest of us.  So if you are new to gold making, this is an excellent starter market to learn the basics of buying supplies from the auction house and turning them into profitable products to sell on the auction house.  This is also another great market to get into to understand how the overnight market will earn you lots of sales on the auction house while you aren't even logged in.

    Low Level Blue Gear

Even from my early days as a gorilla hunting noob, I saw the value of crafting and selling blue items like Barbaric Bracers.  Spidersilk Boots, Spidersilk Drape, Toughened Leather Gloves, and many others can be sold to twink characters and those players with extra gold looking to "pimp out" their alts.

    BoA Enchants

Some low level characters will be fortunate enough to receive some BoA heirloom gear from the other higher level characters on their account.  These BoA heirlooms will be best used with some of the best enchants available to put onto these items.  Have you forgotten to dust off your enchanting rods and get to work supplying enchants for BoA heirlooms?  Again, if you have a nice twink population on your server this market is an excellent one.  Many of the best enchants for BoA heirloom items are also highly sought after by twink characters, so you may be supplying two seperate markets with the same items.  Cha-Ching!

So try not to get stuck into the same old rut of supplying only the high level characters in World of Warcraft.  You may be overlooking some nice markets that could help you to diversify your gold making tactics and help those streams of gold turn to rivers of revenue!

Disenchanting For Profit | Illusion Dust and GEEs

Illusion Dust and Greater Eternal Essences

As I have written about previously, on many servers there is a shortage of Greater Eternal Essences and Illusion Dust.  Both of these Enchanting materials sell very well and for high amounts of gold on my server.  Previously I have done guides on crafting and disenchanting Enchanted Thorium Blades as well as shuffling surplus Runecloth to create Greater Eternal Essences and Illusion Dust.  Today I guide you into another option for turning a golden profit selling these high demand Enchanting materials.

    Disenchanting For Profit

A great option for Enchanters to make gold is through the use of their Disenchanting ability.  I've guided you through crafting Runecloth Headbands and Enchanted Thorium Blades for the sole purpose of disenchanting to get the materials to sell on the auction house.  However, you can also look no further than your local auction house for items to also disenchant.  Here's an easy way to make some gold as an Enchanter.  When you mouse over items not only can you see the market value of items, but you should also be able to see what that item can disenchant into and the chances of each of the possible results.  All you need to do to find items worth disenchanting is to mouse over the various items in the level range that can produce what you are looking for and if the price is right, buy them out.

      Step By Step Guide
    1. Open the auction house interface using any of the common core add-ons like Auctioneer.
    2. In the auction house search categories choose the armor tab.
    3. Set the character level range to 51 - 60.  (The item level is 56-65, but the character level is 51-60 for item that disenchant into GEEs and Illusion Dust.)
    4. Hit search.
    5. Mouse over the items along the left side of the results until you find something that will disenchant into what you are looking for.
    6. Look at the price and determine if it is low enough to be profitable.
    7. If so, buy it out and continue looking for more.
    8. Once finished, collect the items from the mailbox.
    9. Disenchant the items and post the resulting materials onto the auction house for a nice gold profit.
NOTE:  It is important to choose the correct items because there are Outlands dropped items that are at the higher end of the level range that will only disenchant into Outlands Enchanting material.  Be sure to check that you are buying items from Azeroth drops.

    You Can Haz Golds Too

This tactic can work for any enchanting material that you are looking for on the auction house.  Often times you can buy the items and disenchant for the materials you need at a a fraction of the price of buying the materials straight from the auction house.  I paid 6 gold for the item in the picture above.  GEES are going for 35-45 gold each and Illusion Dust is 9-15 gold each.  Even if disenchanting produced a Large Brilliant Shard, those sell for over 6g each.  So of course I bought the item pictured and sold the resulted enchanting materials for a nice profit of gold.

This is an easy market to enter.  As long as you have a high enough level enchanting skill to disenchant the items, you can pick and choose what you buy to maximize your chances at turning a nice profit too.
