Phil Twyford

Phil Twyford is a long time New Zealand Labour Party member of Parliament for Te Atatu in Auckland.

Though now out of favor, Twyford has held several senior Labour Government cabinet positions.

Like many of his Labour Party colleagues, Phil Twyford is close to the Auckland branch of the Marxist-leaning New Zealand Fabian Society.

Founded in 2007, the New Zealand Fabian Society has, like its British and Australian counterparts, become a major leftist covert influence inside the Labour Party.

Twyford has attended Fabian gatherings and addressed and promoted the organization's events.

In 2024, Phil Twyford and Labour colleagues, Ingrid Leary, and Megan Woods, signed a letter circulated by the Marxist-led Progressive International urging the United States to take Cuba off the US State Department's "state sponsors of terror" list.

Twyford was personally thanked for his support at a February 2025 meeting with Cuba's ambassador to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez.

As a young activist, Phil Twyford worked closely with members of the pro-China Workers Communist League while active in the Hotel Workers Union and the "Aid Agency" CORSO.

When the Workers Communist League disbanded in 1990, Twyford expressed interest in joining the WCL's successor organization Left Currents.

The clipping below is from the minutes of a September 30, 1990, Auckland Left Currents meeting.

Phil Twyford continues to support several Workers Communist League/Left Currents legacy organizations - including Living Wage Aotearoa New Zealand.

Phil Twyford is also very active with Migrante Aotearoa - an "immigrant support" group led by Mikee Santos and other supporters of the Philippines' communist revolutionary movement.
