June 2026 …

My MV calendar picture for June 2026 is of the fishing village of Menemsha.

Menemsha is a working fishing village located within the town of Chilmark on the western side of Martha’s Vineyard. The sculpture commemorates the sizeable fleet of swordfishermen who at one time called Menemsha home. The beach at Menemsha is small and quiet with calm waters, great for families. Menemsha is also the perfect spot to catch the sunset.

Memorial Day – A Day For Honoring and Remembering …

Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle. In 1971, Congress established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May and as a federal holiday.

Civil War Memorial at Fairmount cemetery – Newark, NJ

On my mother’s side a somewhat tragic story. My great grandfather, Joseph Littlefield fought in the Civil War and died because of his wounds. He was wounded in the Battle of the Wilderness in 1864. He was sent home to Maine to die. He died of typhoidal pnemonia on Sep 30, 1864, he is buried in Rome, Maine. Unfortunately his wife and his 3 oldest children died of the same thing shortly thereafter, leaving my grandfather, Charles Littlefield at age 10 the oldest of the four remaining children.

Indeed a tragic story and once my daughter Deb and I learned about it felt compelled to find their graves and honor them. Their small plot is off the beaten track in Rome, Maine we found it and traipsed through the brush to get to it. Worth the trip indeed. This was very emotional in that Joseph (41), Martha Jane (36), Margaret (18), Adison (14) and Atwood (12) have become very real to us and we feel very close to them. We weren’t able to bring them flowers but left 5 pennies to indicate we were there and remembering them.

Take a moment to remember the original reason for Memorial Day and the men and women who fought for, and gave their lives for our country.

March 2026 …

Calendar picture for March 2026 is Oak Bluffs…

Oak Bluffs, my favorite town on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. It’s the town my mother grew up in, the town where I spent all my childhood summers, where my grandmother is buried and where you can wander amongst gingerbread cottages, take a flight of fancy on the Flying Horses the oldest carousel in the US, where you can party hearty, enjoy great food, enjoy the beach, or sit quietly by the Tabernacle in the Campground. Can you tell I love this place.

If you’re wondering how it got its name of Oak Bluffs, The first inhabitants of Oak Bluffs were the Wampanoag people, who have lived on Martha’s Vineyard for approximately 10,000 years. … The town re-incorporated in 1907 as Oak Bluffs, named because the town was the site of an oak grove along the bluffs overlooking Nantucket Sound.

February 2026…

My MV calendar picture for February 2026 is a painting my dear friend Karen made for me. She and I have known each other almost 20 years yet have never met in person. The love of Martha’s Vineyard is what brought us together in the first place via our blogs and we began referring to ourselves as ‘Vineyard soul sisters’ and who had Gingerbread cottages next to each other in Oak Bluffs. Thus the painting which arrived on my doorstep several months ago.

Oak Bluffs and the Campground in particular are near and dear to my heart. I spent my childhood summers with my parents and relatives in Oak Bluffs and so many memories of my fond memories are of the Campground and the Gingerbread cottages. ❤

Hello 2026 …

January 2026 – The Islander

The beloved work horse of a ferry, the Islander plied the waters between Woods Hole and Martha’s Vineyard  for almost 60  years before retiring in the winter of 2007.   There was just something about this tub of a boat that endeared her to all who sailed on her…  she wasn’t a great beauty but she had a regalness about her. The Vineyard is many things to many people and in many hearts the Islander was the emotional connection. ❤
