SpaceX is set to launch a record-breaking IPO on Friday. But it’s the company’s rocket launches that are concerning critics in its home state of Texas. The US government is set to give SpaceX some 280 hectares of land that are currently part of a wildlife refuge near its Starbase facility in South Texas, in exchange for land the company owns farther north. Environmental groups are suing to stop the swap – saying Starbase’s expansion threatens both biodiversity and local communities’ beach access.

Solar energy just provided more electricity in the United States than coal for the first time on record—marking a milestone for the rise of renewables in America.

While gas and nuclear plants still lead the country’s energy mix, solar contributed 12.8 percent of the nation’s electrons in May, according to an analysis of government data by Ember, an energy think tank. Coal, meanwhile, provided just 12.2 percent. Just five years ago, solar was less than half of its current levels and coal was at 20 percent.

Experts said the El Niño, a natural warming cycle, should further heat a globe already warming from fossil fuel pollution and will probably turbocharge extreme weather across the planet. Meteorologists forecast it will rival – or exceed – a record El Niño that began in 1997 and helped trigger billions of dollars in damage from heatwaves, floods, droughts, tornadoes and wildfires.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) officially confirmed the existence of the El Niño, which is a warming of the Pacific near the equator that affects weather patterns across the globe. Noaa’s announcement said there was a 63% chance that the El Niño will get so intense this late fall and early winter that it “would rank among the largest El Niño events in the historical record going back to 1950”.

• The matchup looks like a classic partisan battle: Democrats overwhelmingly back Becerra and outnumber Republicans statewide, while Hilton’s endorsement from the deeply unpopular President Trump could hinder him in November.
• Becerra, whose surge followed Eric Swalwell’s scandal-driven exit, performed better among progressive voters than billionaire Tom Steyer, whose $216-million campaign couldn’t overcome negative ratings or Becerra’s stronger appeal on the left.
