a little show and tell ...

Another nice winter's day here in Sydney, been up since very early, the dogs were barking at something most of the night, most likely Remi the pony and the sheep under the tree. I have separated the ewes about to give birth from the rest of the flock. The first of the lambs was born 2 weeks ago and since then nothing, but this weekend 3 ewe's should lamb.

Bella looks huge so maybe we could have twins. Miss Lashes is not as big as previous seasons, so only one expected there. And 1 from the old brown ewe. Unfortunately they will all be mixed breeds this year Suffolk X Marino. Why this weekend we heading to the farm, so that leaves Tanya alias The Blond One in charge. (she's not really blond, only dyes her hair blond ... blonds have more fun???) See that fence destruction caused by Neighbour Ram, we just given up trying to repair it atm, because we don't have a dominate ram atm and his just going to keep coming over. So want to shoot him .......

Really into the crocheting atm, so easy to pick up when you got a spare moment, so much inspiration out there in Blogland. Keep finding projects I would like to make. Must confess I don't like reading the patterns but can copy a picture easily. Saved all the projects in a folder to get to later. This little doily only took a few hours to make, it was a challenge cause of the green stitch connecting to the inner green row (hope that makes sense) Found the pattern at Little Woollie.blogspot.comhttp://littlewoollie.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2011-05-19T12%3A55%3A00%2B10%3A00&max-results=7 Just highlight the above link for the correct link to the project. What I do love about this blog and so many others is all the bright colour used. There's even a link How to mosaic your photo's. Been wondering how to for ages, no computer nerd here! Just wondering if crochet is on your list of skills. It really is not that hard to do, so give it a try. Sometimes I prefer crochet to knitting but that just me.

Next project is all lined up and ready to go, another really easy one coat hanger covers with crochet roses. or maybe a milk jug doily with some white beads with roses ... told ya lots of projects waiting

See ya soon

A gift given ...

Don't we all like a little something in the post, from an old friend or a new one for that matter. I got pleasantly reminder ed of a small cross stitch that found it's way into an envelope in ... wait for it ... 1993, to a dear friend. And now after all these years my friend posted a picture of it on Facebook for me. Knew it was just the sort of homemade pressie that Dalene would have loved to receive, no frame, just the little cross stitch.
"Rina, I think of you everyday because I have this little treasure hanging in my kitchen. You sent this to me in California in 93, before you moved to Australia. You embroidered the lemons and I framed it.....I love it!"
I still love sending parcels,
have great weekend

Another project in the making ...

Come on take a quess what this is? Yeah your right serviette rings for a spring table setting. Don't they just look so cute. I made ten of them because my diningroom table has 10 very solid shabby chic white chairs, A huge white dresser and a kauri pine table that was once used in a workshop. We restored it, replaced a few boards of the top with flooring boards. Still not wide enough to happily sit 2 chairs on the end but when we restored it there were only 6 chairs. Something else on the to do list.

Back to the spring table setting. I have run out of the dark pink bamboo cotton, but will pop in at Spotlight today and get a few more balls of it. Enough to make square place matts to go under the white square dinner plates I bought for Rose cottage. A runner down the middle of the table could work well too, just to stop hot dishes burning my nice table. Have to use a white table cloth under all that.

Ta Da the headband is finished, decided to only sew on 3 flowers cause it was just so busy with the 5 flowers. What ya think?
The ideas have been flying around here lately but all those UFO's need a doing first.

See ya soon

Just a little crafting ...

Not bad going here 2 scarves and a pretty headband embellished with flowers and leaves.

The first scarf is for me, just a plain feathers scarf, knitted on a size 5 needle, casting on 25 stitches, and my old trick knitting a matching 5ply with the feathers yard just to firm the scarf up a bit. Turns out lovely and warm every time. For this project I used 4 balls of feathers yarn and a cotton yarn from an top that I was recycling.

Bought this yarn at Lincraft, it's very similar to the popcorn yarn available atm, and using size 8 needle which I had to go buy especially to knitting this scarf. First I used smaller needles and got so frustrated with the stitches falling off, I was ready to throw the yarn out. So glad I got the right sized needles cause it has turned out to super soft. Great colour for a young lady.

And now I am just about ready to sew these flowers and leaves on to a crocheted headband in a charcoal, showing these easy flowers and leaves off beautifully.
I am think this should look very cute, well I am hoping she's going to love it.

There is one other project I have be working on a while now, and let me show you, it's a project to use up all unwanted leftover bits of yarn. Using 2 strands of yarn, in this case I used white as the main shade. Just by joining all the little bits together and rolling it into a big ball. Used a 4.5 Crochet needle, formed 8 chain circle, and started making a huge granny square. to end this square a strong dark colour set this off nicely. It's going over the backrest of the couch where the cats love lying.

A little bit of crafting for pink ribbon day

Now what can I do to help decorate the hall for Tanya's Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Girls Night in. Just the sort of thing I love doing, putting myself under pressure, thats when I function the best.

(Friday)I bought 3 glass vases from the 2Dollar shop this morning, just right for some pink roses. I have a large white damask table cloth for the snack table. Need some pink plates and napkins, Pink, silver and white balloons to hang from the ceiling ... I need to go to the party shop for that

Then on to spotlight for some pink fabric for a garland flag thingy (Bunting). I bought 2 mtrs of fabric at $7 a mtr and 10 mtrs of cord. This is so easy to make. Fold your chosen material double, placing the top bit of the material on the fold, pin and cut a triangle, fold it open and it should be a diamond shape. Cut a few more ...

I bought a thin pink cord that is going to be sewn inside the flags, fold flag back to the triangle and placing cord along the inside of the top/fold. Pin and sew the sides on top. Leaving atleast 1/2 mtr each end of the cord to tie it up with. So we're not even going to fold it inside out or anything. Quick and easy sewing on top. (Might have to make two of them)

(Wensday)Why is it when your not looking for something then there's heaps in the shops, but when you want some there's none available. The hunts on for tiny disco balls ... 8 in a box, pink ribbon and little roses. Today I found the disco balls and ribbon 2/3's of the way there. and pretty paper cupcake holders and paper doilies. You will have to wait for the big reveal, sorry no pics yet
Still waiting for a date Tanya??!!??

We will a serving pink champagne, strawberries dipped in white and milk chocolate, cupcakes decorated beautifully. Hmmm did we not buy one of those wire cup cake holder thingies the other day. Some coconut ice might look nice too. Freshly baked puff pastry with ricotta fillings and bite size sausage rolls. Carrot and celery sticks with a dip sauce. Tanya got a plastic container with two trays inside esp to transpost or store 24 cup cakes in, very nice but a little expensive. Did I tell you how she conned me into buying her stuff and a book for decorating cakes a while ago, with promises of doing a decorating cource soon Hmmmm Will need to remind her about that.
Now all we need is a date before the end of the month

What a bargain ... craft magazines, general news update

Now that's one thing I can't resist is craft books, esp when they on sale, or those specials when you get 2 or 3 magazines in a bag or the same price. It's the quilts and stitchery books I am after. Just to droll over the lovely quilts and great decorating ideas, still to make a big one one day. My first stop was a quick visit to a little antique store just up the road where I rummaged though a box and found 5 magazines at a $1 each.

So here's what I found 8 books for $2 from the hospital, last week they having a fundraising sale in the foyer. Lots of books, wooly things & knee blankets, cakes and jams, and a few small toys. All raising money for much needed medical equipment.

My old man is still in hospital, so until life gets back to normal I won't be posting much. My day is very full on, 2hrs travelling a day, still working 5hrs a day, then off to see George at the hospital which is close to work cause all his doctors are there. Then come home to feed the animals again. Now I off to the produce store too find out about the new septic tank I bought for Rose Cottage ... I hope they have ordered it by now.

Sheep update: I am thinking we might have news there soon, Bella's Mum is making little grunty noises this morning but no other signs yet. I left the spot light on over night, as the sheep were very restless. Damn foxes!

Have a lovely weekend and see ya all soon

Cleaning the wool basket .. and Cobi visiting for the holidays.

Miss Daisy resting on the solar panels.

Funny how sometimes you just not sure what to blog about, like you just hit a wall, but then something happens that is good or fun and you just want to share. My Grandson Cobi from Brisbane is visiting for the holidays ... ah 7 year olds can keep you on your toes ... Aunty Tanya took his shopping for new sneakers and a few things. Entertainment was a visit to the movies and lunch.Saturday a few neighbours got together for a Bonfire evening, a few spare ribs and sausages very bbqed on the coles and potatoes in tinfoil cooked in the hot coals, served with a little butter. A glass of red in hand and a bottle tucked under the arm. The kids all roasted marshmellows and had a ball. Yesterday we were baking cupcakes with Mia from next door helping.

Monday ... Today is a cold and grey miserable day in Sydney, I put on a pot of soup, added all the left overs from the weekend and some more, it's good trust me. And while I got to watch over that I made a pot of beef Stew as well. All bits of beef not suitable for making Beef Jerky with get used for a stew or curry. The next batch of Jerky is just hung up in the meat safe to dry. We are baking another batch of cupcakes. Tomorrow we're off to horse riding lessons. Another week of holidays left what shall we get up to next.

****************************************
Craft project of the week: Scarf for Cobi.
But I do have something for you to think about ... a scrappy wool blankie.

Have you finished a jumper or some other project and had these little bits of wool over you not to sure what to do with. Well thats what I did last thursday going through the baskets and looking for bit of wool and stuff I had started and not finished. Unravelled and joined all the short bits together and rolled into a ball. Exciting???

But It gets better. Find a large crochet hook and a big ball of white wool or choose what ever colour you think matches you scrap best. I never realised I buy a lot of blues, greens, purle and pink.

Using 2 threads at a time ... Crochet (8)chains to form a loop and then make on dc, 1 chain dc 1 chain ... 10 times.
Next row 2. *ch 2 trebles 2 ch 2 treb into one chain hole*, repeat in every second hole ... giving you 5 corners for a hexican.
row3. Crochet a corner as above, *1 chain 1 treb 1 ch 1 treb* between the two corners ...
row 4. continue as above ....
That's the whole pattern it lies flat no wobbly edges.

I think this could be a great blankie to use all your scraps

*******************************************
Tuesday ... We're so excited about our riding lesson, we even went to bed early. Aunty Tanya (also know as the Blond One ... she's not really blond ... it comes in a packet) took Cobi to his lesson with Vicky just down the road from us. He was a little nervous to start with but soon settled down nicely. So next holidays we going to have a few more lessons cause he really really likes it.

Our neighbours took Cobi along to Soccer practice, here he did 3 lapse around the field with the 10yr olds, dribbled and play with them. Totally exhausted!!Some great pics too Tanya.

Saturday ... we were invited to Anzels birthday party, she turned a big 4,so beautiful you could just hug her. Grandpa was crook the whole weekend so he stayed at home. His sugar levels have fallen to low.
Sonday ... Cleaned house cause we got visitors, feed the animals and checked on broody silky but nothing yet. She's sitting on one egg! It's to cold so I really can't see a heap of little chicks atm.I tried moving her with egg to a hatching/rearing cage by herself, but she seems to prefer the small dog kennel with two other chooks.

Tomorrow Cobi is flying back to Brisbane, another holiday gone. Going to miss him XoXoX. Yeh and back to work. Have a great week everyone.
Until nexttime

Knitting bedsocks

No your not seeing double, I have posted this post before but decided to repost it. Just for those knitters looking for a wee project while sitting in front of the heater or fire ...

If only I had the spare time to do more craft, but working fulltime has put a spanner in the works. Got to make time ..... yeh right. But I would like to share a few items I have made or am busy making atm. One being a bedsock pattern. My step father of 90 was sporting them on my recent visit overseas, when I saw them I knew I could work out the pattern easily.

Bedsocks: you will need some thickish wool or 2 strands of 8 ply.

wool needle to sew up edges and to tuck away threads. (opps I am not finished yet)

Cast on 70/80/90 stitches for larger size (to test if they going to fit knit 2 rows, fold in half, that should give you the size, just add more stitches if you need)

Knit 10/12 rows of garter stitch
Knit 4 rows stocking stitch
shaping: Row 1. Knit 31 /36 /43sts, knit 2 together, knit 4, knit 2 together, knit 31/36/43 sts.

Sew edges closed and thread a ribbon or cord through holes.

Happy knitting

A little scrapbooking ... recycle your old dairy

Are you a scrapbooker? I do not claim to be any good at it but I do try come up with a few good ideas. Like this project below. It started it's life as a dairy, then as always happens at the end of each year it just lays around , no good for anything. But wait I got a plan. I removed 1/4 of the pages, glued every second one together. Painted them black, yep it's another messy project. I used Jo Sonya paint after lightly sanding the pages. When they dried (overnight), I started blocking up the pages, carrying over the same white embossed paper or matching paper, sort of keeping to a theme if you know what I mean. Now I could add my pics and journalling. Why not punch small holes around the edge of the pages, then thread a few strings of fluffy yarn through the holes.

I bet a teenager would love to make one of these photo books to brag to her friends.

The ZigZag railway is in the Blue Mountains, about 1hr drive away. With these photo's I tried to bring in the smokey soot effect by smudging the edges of the background paper, using a black stamping ink. Anf where I cropped the photo's I smudge the edge to ... Bit messy

DiL and Cobi, I had so many pics it was hard chosing which ones to use.

DiL2 with Luke ... These were taken when we spent a long weekend at Bunya Mountains, Queensland. We went on a wagon drawn by 2 beautiful horses. We had billy tea with damper yum. (I did this page on my one and only lesson)

My Dear friends Rosie, Roy and William on their last visit to Australia. I blogged about Rosie in my other blog, if you would like to read more. We had a lovely day at the Everglades Gardens at Leura, Blue Mountains before retiring to a nice hot meal and quite evening in front of the fire place with good friends.
Until Nexttime

What's on my crochet hook atm & opshop finds

Our local opshop is right next door to our bank, so normally I just pop in, check out the books section and have a walk through. I never buy new books anymore, they cost to much. At $3 a book here and they still as new ... what a bargain. Atm I reading Gold Dust by Kimberley Freeman.

Another time I found boxes of very long thick candles, must be wedding candle cause they two in a box, marked at $1.50. Needless to say I bought the lot, all 15 boxes, another find for the secret stash stockpiling box. They going to come in very handy.

Another find was a crochet blanket marked for a doggie blanket. I loved the pattern but was not crazy over the choose of colour, way to loud for me. The pattern was easy to work out and then armed with new wool and a crochet hook, a new project was started. I choose Carnival 8 ply in white and varigated brown/beige/dustypink very pretty! Nothing over the top.
It's slow going but that my project for this year. Just don't have the time
with working fulltime anymore.

But now housework calls and the animals need to be feed. Enjoy your Day. And so ...

Until nexttime

Christmas Decoration Swap

Make something under $5 and send to a internet friend. ... I love taking part in swaps and recieving a present from someone your only "spoke" to on the internet. This happy seasons swap coordinator was Tammy from Down to Earth (sorry link won't work but click on D2E on the right under blogs I follow)and my swap partners was JakiF who sent me the above decorations and I posted Pixie her present. I made 3 little gingerbread men from felt and a red and white candy cane dishcloth. Bummer I should have taken a pic.

JakiF little button wreaths are so cute and very easy to make. A few buttons and wire from the bead shop, just thread button on the wire make a twisty thingy to close wreath, add a little gold thread for a handing loop and add a bow ... Done and to top it off I get spoilt with a little bag of choccies too. Thanks JakiF

Today I thought I might change my Background to a christmas themed one and even found a little snow, can you see it? Love this time of year when you can decorate to your heart content.

The graduation went off well, the girls looked lovely in their costumes and they had a ball. Here's a little view of their costumes from the back DD sewed them.

Love your new background Miss Chatty Crone, very pretty.

Seasons greetings to All

Until nexttime

Knitting needle holder

Here is the solution to knitting needles always going missing, mine go walk abouts but not anymore. Saw a lady on TV making one, never got the pattern for that one, so I designed my own from memory. In hind sight I should have checked out how many needles I got and made it a little bigger. That was before Mom gave me her knitting needles as well, now I really need to make another soon.

This is my crochet version but I want to knit the next one.

This is not a beginners pattern, not because it's hard but it's a big project to start with! This pattern is great for all those left over bits from other projects, just make sure you have enough for the first section, then you can swap to a contrasting colour for the 2nd section. Accomodates 14 sets of needles.

You will need a chunky yarn, or 2 strands of 8 ply no5/6 knitting needles

There are 3 different steps to follow

First section: Cast on 100 sts and knit in stocking stitch or what ever design takes your fancy, I like strips so that's what I will do. Changing colour every 5th row. Place a Marker at 6 cm on both sides of the piece. Knit a block/piece long enough to accomodate your longest knitting needle, then cast off.

2nd section: Cast on 100 sts and knit 6cms in the design of your choice again mark it.

We need to make holes for the needles to fit in, continue following

this pattern:

Both sections can be crocheted if prefered.

Row 1: knit 2 sts, knit 2 together, wrap yarn around needle (to make up the lost stitch), knit1, knit2 tog, wyan, knit 1, knit 2 tog, 32 times .... to the end ending with knit 2.

Row 2: Purl to end

Row 3: Knit as per row 1 to end

Row 4: Purl to end

Row 5: Knit to end

Row 6: Purl to end

Row 7 + 9: Knit same as 1 + 3

Row 8: Purl to end

Row 10, 11 + 12: knit as 4,5 +6

Continue until with pattern until block/piece measures same a section 1.

End with 2 rows stocking stitch, then cast off.

Lay blocks on top of each other, sew/tack together depending on how you want to finish it off, I would crochet them together with a frilly edge, or you could blanket stitch them together, as part of your embelishment. Sew on a loop, place needle through the holes, roll it up, giving you the correct spot to place your button, careful not to sew it through both blocks. Or you could just tie a ribbon or cord around it.

Crochet version:

Now to continue block 2, cast off after 6 cm. Pick up stitches on section 1 with your hook from the 6 cm mark. Or you could just skip section 2 so far and pick up stitches on the side

of section 1.

Row1: crochet to the end

Row 2: cro. 2 treb. st. make 2 chain st. 2 treb. st. 2 chain st. 2 treb ...... to end

Row 3: continue with row 2 until the section is the same as section 1, finishing off as Row 1. Fold over and tack sides.

Finish off as above.

Now I still need to figure out what I am going to do about those hooks that go missing.

Another Bed Sock Pattern

Lets make some bed sock/slippers.

Here's an easy one for you, you will need 2 balls or 100 gr of yarn 8ply and size 5 knitting needles. In this pair I used two colours to start with then changed to one colour. Using double thread through out cause I like thick socks.

Cast on 40 sts using double thread.
Knit 2 rows plain
3rd row knit 2 st, wool over needle and knit 2 tog ( to make a hole for the cord) and same on the other side Knit 2 tog, w o n, knit 2 sts.
Knit 3 rows plain and 4th row make holes for the cord again.
9/10 holes down the side should be enough.
Change pattern by knitting a rib ( 1 plain ,1 purl)or double rib2 plain ,2 purl)
knit about 36 rows ( measure your foot on the knitting piece, should be half way up your toes) next row: knit 2 sts together across the whole needle 20 sts.
Knit the next row, turn and knit 2 together again 10 sts.
Cast off. to sew the sides up, fold work and sew the heel closed, then sew the toes closed up to the holes for the cord/ribbon.

Kids slippers.

Just cast on 32 stitch follow pattern as above 5/6/7 holes according to kids foot and so on..........

Wishing everyone warm toasty feet
Until nexttime

My Love of Pine Cones

Funny how somethings stay with you all your life, pine trees and pine cones, the smell of a pine plantation. What a waste to just throw nature's decoration away, so what to do with them. I love to paint things, if it stands still long enough it will get painted, trust me. These I painted the same colour as the caravan, which will fade a little in the sun. The basket is one of my lucky finds on the curb,it also got a slap of green pint.

Another lot of cones have been spray painted gold, they part of the christmas decorations. Christmas at our place involves a whole change of scenery, most bits of "clutter" get packed away, and the Xmas boxes come out.

But I think it's on the veranda that they look the best with other dried up seed pods and things, displayed in a old wire basket. I love driving in the country where under trees cones have fallen as only nature can display them.

a Granddaughter's fairy blanket ........

Yeh Right, maybe someday I will have a granddaughter but in the meantime I have crocheted a blankie for her. (not much hope of that happening anytime soon) This blankie has magic yarn from the scrap box, all left over yarns weaved in ... with a few extras thrown in .... creating a fairy blanket.

I have gone with a ripple pattern, casting on just enough chains for a cot blanket,132/148/164 chains for your strips to run width wise or lenght wise. Yarns I have used are Flutter/Feathers with a matching 8 ply, 1 strand of 8 ply from Lincraft. And 2 strands of fashion yarn Peacock, which cost a $1 each from the Reject shop just make sure you buy enough of it the first time as you are using 2 strands. Rather buy to much yarn cause you can always make a beanie to match.

Pattern is as follows, using 1 strand of 8 ply, crochet/cast on required stitches/chains.
Turn to start first base row, use first 3chains as 1 treble st, crochet 7 sts =8 sts, make 2 chains, crochet next st into the last no 8 st, then cro.7 trebles, skip 2 chains, next treble into 3rd chain.... Continue with the last 16 sts to the end.
Change colour every few rows, it does look nicer if there is some sort of sequence to the colours but it's your choice entirely. Tie ends and work them in with a wool needle. You could crochet a simple border to finish it off.

Tip: I have seen blankets come unstuck because threads have been just cut off, all that work for nothing. Spend the time ... it's worth it.

My mosaic waterbowl from recycled stuff.

You find all sorts of wonderfully creative materials on Council clean ups. I just can't help myself I have to look. This bowl was a concrete bird bath sitting in someones yard until the pedestal broke and it found it's way on the clean up. Old ceramic flower pots, bases of lampshades and some old crockery are some of the creative finds. A new green majolica platter I had bought from a lady on Ebay arrived in bits & pieces but that turned into part of this lovely waterbowl.

2 boxes full of little glass tiles, some still on the sheets, they about 10mm square, also found their way to our house ..... to think what project to do with them. Leaning towards maybe a wonderful under the sea theme, on glass with lead for the grouting. Should look stunning! Somewhere I got some glass peddles ..... got to look.

Got very excited over a handmade pottery mexican urn, the base was broken so it went on the curb as well. I covered it with more blue and white ceramic bits and now lives happily as a water feature, nestled on river rocks between 2 ponds. Will take a photo next time we up at the property.

So next time there's a clean up, think creative and recycle stuff.

Composting and Recycling.

Ever wondered how much we contribute to the Landfill Site around the world?

How many more holes are we going to dig to throw away "Stuff" mostly made out of recycleable materials?

Every item you buy has some sort of wrapping or box, but it's what we do with it that counts. Protesting to manufactures about the usesage would be great. But they only hear what they want to anyway. We can help sort out our own waste into recycle bins provided by Councils and Recycle Centre. Food scraps, teabags and peels all compostable so investing in a worm farm and some chooks are just one way of dealing with this problem. The weekly bin is only half full aand still working on reducing the waste. My worm farm has been going for 10 years with very little effort. In return I get worm juice which I dilute for my plants and eventually castings to mix with a little soil or potting mix.

Our local recycle centre turns green garden waste into lovely rich black compost or gold as I call it ... a 10/10 for them. I have bought tons of it, had a few loads delivered to spread around the garden. The plant are just loving it, giving me heaps of great healthy crops.

Here in Australia the local Vinnies or Salvos are only to happy to take stuff you no longer want or need.

Just a few simply ideas I use to reuse or recycle.

Plastic 2lt ice cream tubes - Great for freezing, packs nicely into the freezer saving space - I make my own dog food, saving money and halving the cost to feed them. No more tin cans.

Carboard inside the toilet rolls - is great to plant a few seeds, no need to remove them either as them will break up eventually. Great for art projects for school and pre primary schools.

Egg boxes get painted with poster paint, decorated or used to hide easter eggs in. We have a painting session during holidays.

Old bathroom towels get cut into small hand towels which I love to dollie up with bit of material strips and loops to hang them up by - great in the laundry, kitchen or garden.

Plastic 2 ltr milk bottles got cut away leaving the handle bit - used to soak paint brushes in or for scoops for the chook food.

Blue Jeans just don't get thrown away even if they got holes - see Craft Corner.

Sure you could think of a couple of uses other than memtioned.

Happy recycling
