New Year Resolutions Check In

When I decided on my New Year Resolutions , I decided to post them online so that I would be more motivated, if only by the shame of public failure, to keep them. So here is how I’m doing so far:
  1. Get strait A’s – Grades won’t be calculated till the end of March
  2. Read at least one book every two weeks – Read four books in two months
  3. Get into a shape that isn’t round – Failing really badly at this
  4. Volunteer for a good cause – Volunteering 12 hours a week at the Boys and Girls Club
  5. Travel outside the country – Failing, but there is still time
  6. Get my driver’s license – Still hasn’t happened
  7. Get a job that gives me more than 5 hours a month – Nope
  8. Figure out  topic for Senior Thesis – Done, now I just need to find the discipline to write 50 pages of brilliance
  9. Spend more time exploring my surroundings – Does partying count?
  10. Begin learning a new language – No
  11. Handwrite love letters to Boyfriend – I wrote one letter…
  12. Dance more – Yay for dancing
  13. Call more, text less – I think I’ve used like 50 minutes since new Years
  14. Write more – Not really happening
  15. Adopt a pet, or foster – I want a kitty   T_T
  16. Attend more shows on and off campus – If only…
  17. Do more crafts – Too poor due to failure of resolution 7
  18. Stop taking more responsibilities than will allow me at least six hours a night of sleep on average – Sleep is for squares!
  19. Find a professor to mentor me – Sort of…
  20. Don’t be a failure. Achieve as many resolutions as possible – Too soon to tell

So I have outright failed 7 of my resolutions so far and 3 are kinda iffy. Hopefully the rest of the year will be better.

The Problem With Facebook (Or Why It’s Not OK To Kill Justin Bieber)

Lately I have been seeing the darker side of Facebook. It started out small. Every once in a while a “friend” would have a status or link that is bigoted and hateful, and I would let them know how I felt about it. But then I started unfriending them as it became clear that this bigotry was a personality trait. I call these The Great Purges (there have been three so far). And it was at the end of  the last Great Purge that I first found the groups.

Groups and pages with names like this, and even more horrible content and fans where you can:

Joke about rape – You know she’s playing hard to get when you’re chasing her down an alleyway

Deny that somewhere between 6 – 10 Million people were murdered – Holohoax

Promote violence against women – Hitting Women

Hate Muslims while making weird references – I Hate Muslims in Oz

We all know there are terrible excuses for human beings out there, but the proper response it to not give them a platform on which to spread their hate. In the United States hate speech is not protected under the first amendment. The problem is that Facebook seems to be a safe haven to these kinds of people in spite of the fact that “Facebook does not tolerate hate speech” and “it is a serious violation of our terms to single out individuals based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or disease”. The pages and groups I listed above have been banned, but only after they were allowed to exist for month if not years of constant reporting by other Facebook users and eventually received media attention. And the dozens of other groups with similar messages, but did not receive media attention were allowed to continue to exist.

Which bring me to dozens of pages and groups devoted to the hatred and murder of Justin Bieber.

I get it. Justin Bieber is an overrated, highly commercialized, shallow, and I cringe to use the word, “artist”. He is a barely above average singer who is by no means great, and his fame is an insult to true musicians, song writers, and singers everywhere. In conclusion, he sucks. And people have every right to believe and say this. But what I don’t understand is this:

My screen shot of 1/5 of the page of my FB search of the term “kill justin beiber” shows 30,624 people who are advocating the murder of a 17 year old boy, a child. Even as a joke this is not funny. If this were some average high school student this would be considered bullying at the very least. Children have committed suicide for less.

And these groups are not about his music. People honestly hate him, and their perceptions of his gender and sexuality. It always comes back to calling him gay or a girl as justification for their hatred of him. As if being gay or a girl is reason to hate anyone.

So stop it Facebook. Stop letting people joke about rape, and violence. Stop letting tens of thousands of people tell a young boy that they want to murder him because he is “gay” or a “girl”, and let us hate Justin Bieber for the real reasons he deserves to be hated: because he makes my ears bleed.

Redefining Television

I am not a big fan of watching T.V. There are a few shows I really love that I usually watch online, but  mostly the T.V. in my apartment just sits there gathering dust. Unfortunately being a teenager who doesn’t watch television means that I miss out on a lot of pop culture. So I did some cursory research and decided to rename them based on how I perceived them from ten minutes of random Googling.

Keeping Up With The Kardashians – Stupid People Who Were Smart Enough To Make Money By Being Stupid

Jersey Shore – Orange People With Plastic Hair

When Animals Attack – When Stupid People Go Near Dangerous Animals

Survivor – Getting Paid To Live Like Very Poor People

iCarly – Sassily Making Fun Of The Homeless

X Factor/ American Idol/ America’s Got Talent – Idiots Who think They Are Talented With Friends Who Let Them Humiliate Themselves On National Television, And Some Really Talented People

The Problem With Loving Boobs

If you live in the United States and you interact with people under 30 then you have probably seen “i ❤ boobies” bracelets. If you haven’t they look like this:

They are made and sold by the Keep A Breast Foundation, and range from $4 to $23, the price depending whether or not  you are willing to pay extra to be able to profess your love for breast in the dark.

Now on the surface these bracelets are great. They are affordable, support breast cancer research (but not really since only about 10% of the profits are donated), raise awareness, and are cute, fun, and a just bit naughty. These bracelets are a part of long line of breast themed awareness campaigns. They seem like an optimistic and empowering way to attack a serious disease that affects so many women and their loved ones.

The only problem is that fighting breast cancer is not about saving boobs. It is about the life of the women attached to cancer filled sack of fat on their chest. 1 out of 8 women in the US will get breast cancer in her lifetime and 40,000 people die every single year. In fact, most if not all of these women would gladly cut of their breast(s) if it means being able to grow old with their significant others, retiring, or throw their best friend a 80th birthday party.

In our hyper sexualized advertising culture sex is used to sell everything, even cancer research. It makes me wonder what kind of people the breast cancer foundations think we are. Do they really believe that we wouldn’t donate money to save people’s lives if awareness was about real women and not their goodies? Would we really care less if we were to be reminded that breasts are for babies and not for men’s pleasure? My family history puts me at risk for breast cancer, and I hope that if I were to contract it the people in my life would be there to support me because they value my life and not my boobs.

So if you actually want to donate to breast cancer or raise awareness here are some sites that are much more helpful than a rubber band with “i ❤ boobies” on it:

http://www.cancer.org/index

P.S. Those titillating Facebook statuses about the color of your panties or where you like to put your purse are worse than useless. Stop sending me messages that say that we can end breast cancer posting cryptic sexual messages and not tell boys whats going on. If you really want to help post this: http://www.nationalbreastcancer.org/about-breast-cancer/breast-self-exam.aspx to teach women how to check themselves for early signs. I guarantee you will save more lives.
