Suki59's Fanfiction

Breathe Magazine

The latest issue of Breathe Magazine (Issue 81) is out, and there’s a very cool article in it about fanfiction! I was lucky to be interviewed by the writer, Jade Beecroft, along with other fanfiction writers about the topic. “Join the fan club” takes a look at how writing fanfiction can sharpen your writing skills, and I couldn’t agree more.

From the article:

“Susan says that writing fanfiction helped kickstart her career. ‘I was a timid new writer when I discovered fan fiction,’ she explains. ‘The anonymity appealed to me, and seeing other not-so-perfect writers sharing sharing their work gave me the confidence to go for it.'”

And here’s my last quote (and the last line from the article too):

“I wouldn’t be a published author without my fan-fiction community. I still value those friendships greatly.”

Yay for fanfiction! And thank you to Breathe Magazine and Jade Beecroft for recognizing its importance in the literary world–something all of us here already knew.

The Vampire Cafe

I just got back from a little getaway to New Orleans, and I couldn’t wait to get home to my laptop to share my dining experience at The Vampire Cafe with you all! One day I spotted a few vampires on the street in the French Quarter sucking on blood bags, and I soon discovered the source of their unique drinking vessels: The New Orleans Vampire Cafe.

Naturally, I went inside and ordered a virgin blood bag and a vampire burger for lunch. My friend had the non-virgin blood bag that included vodka, but I had to keep my wits about me, knowing our very lives could be in danger in this room full of blood suckers. Also, my little wheels were turning as I plotted my next vampire story in my head.

None of the vamps were able to get their fangs into me, but the place certainly sucked quite a bit of money out of my wallet. After lunch, I found their gift shop around the corner and immediately fell under the vampires’ spell as I gladly forked over even more cash for a souvenir t-shirt. Later, I found tiny stickers of puncture wounds with a droplet of blood that had been secretly slipped into my bag, but I didn’t fall for it! They won’t get anywhere near my neck.

Back in our hotel, as I packed my now-empty blood bag and t-shirt into my suitcase (and stored the spell-casting stickers safely in my purse), I realized that yes, I was clearly easily influenced by the enterprising New Orleans vampires to give them my money, but they didn’t get my soul. And now I can have the last word by writing about them and exposing their methods to the world. My advice to you all? Go if you can, but beware!

Throwback Thursday

Hi friends! It was this month in 2014 when I had my first book signing. It was such a happy event for me. My fanfiction friends had been reading my stories for years, but the big real world didn’t know I was a writer until I published Drop Dead Gorgeous. I also became Suki McMinn with the launch of that book. I chose the name Suki because my fanfiction friends knew me as Suki, and I added my husband’s last name, McMinn. (I hadn’t changed my last name when we’d married ten years earlier.)

If you were my Facebook friend or followed me on Instagram, you might have noticed that I disappeared. My account was hacked last month, and those pages have gone poof, sadly. But do not despair! I have a newly Meta Verified account, and I’m rebuilding there as Susan Carole McNabb (the name on my driver’s license). So please pop over and friend me at this link. My new page looks like this:

Vampires on sale!

To celebrate this Halloween, please enjoy my funny vampire books, The Vampire of Waller County and Christmas in Waller County for only 99 cents each on Kindle October 27-31. Enjoy!

Welcome to October!

Happy October, friends! Here I am working on “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark” as Elvira’s stand in and photo double. Some days I was lucky enough to drive the Macabre Mobile.

Little did I know, this film would be the beginning of a seventeen-year side gig working for Elvira as well as a lifelong friendship with Cassandra Peterson herself.

I write about it in my memoir The Opposite of Famous by Susan McNabb (The name I was born with before I became Suki 59).

The three chapters about my working for Elvira are “A Tale of Two Titties,” “Around the World in Thirty-one Days,” and “Knott’s Scary Animal Farm.”
