Assignment 10, Part 1 – Check-In
As a group of largely juniors and seniors, the pandemic may be altering life plans significantly. How are you doing, both physically and mentally? What’s going well? What challenges are your experiencing? What have you gained during this time of social distancing? Is this pandemic impacting your future plans? How do you envision your summer? How do you envison next year? Best of luck to seniors who are making college choices with a May 1 deadline! Limit yourself to a maximum of three paragraphs.
Assignment 10, Part 2 – Special Books By Special Kids
Go to their Facebook-maintained site (https://www.facebook.com/specialbooksbyspecialkids/). Skim through an array of different conditions. Select three. For each one, 1) list the condition, 2) the genetic basis for the condition, 3) physical/mental manifestations, and 4) your reaction to the video. Limit yourself to a maximum of two paragraphs per condition.
Assignment 10, Part 3 – Achieving a Little Life Balance
Show me something you’re doing that you enjoy. Outdoors, indoors, post as either a set of several images or a link to a video not to exceed three minute in length. For example, I just uploaded a video of my nosework teammate, Belle, working two hides. Nosework is a competitive timed sport in which dog-handler teams do detection work, similar to that done by dogs involved in narcotic and explosives detection. This involves both physics (fluid dynamics) and biology!
I had the opportunity to take part in a virtual six day camp. In one of the speakers’ talks, she mentioned that converging odors often lead to vortices in which the dogs circled, sometimes several times, appeared somewhat absent momentarily as they processed the swirl of odors, and then would proceed in the direction of one of the intended odor hides. I set it up, as you can see, and it worked just as she said. Between seconds 36 and 49 seconds she circles three times as she works the vortices. At 48 seconds she has a pretty good sense of direction of Hide 2, which is becoming her focus. Yep, this is what I do for fun. Let me see what you are doing!
