Parking Ticket

Working people frequently ask retired people what

they do to make their days interesting.

Well, for example, the other day, Jeanie my wife and I

went into town and visited a shop.  When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.
We went up to him and I said, ‘Come on, man,

how about giving a senior citizen a break?’

He ignored us and continued writing the ticket.

I called him an a–hole . He glared at me and started

writing another ticket for having worn-out tires.
So Bev called him a s–t head. He finished the

second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.

Then he started writing more tickets.

This went on for about 20 minutes.

The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it

and went home. We weren’t too concerned about the vehicle’s owner because of the sticker on the back window  “I support Julius Malema”.

We try to have a little fun each day now that we’re retired. It’s important at our age.

Lighthearted Heritage Day

 

Today being Heritage day saw most of our country partake in one of our most beloved cultural practices. Yes, we spent most of our day in front of well prepared fires getting our braai on.

 

 

 

In my house Heritage day started out in pain. I don’t know why but for some reason I took off my knee brace last night so when I woke up I thought someone snuck into my room and dissected each and every ligament in my knee!

 

 

 

Eventually I found said brace and after a long bath I was ready to celebrate our heritage.

 

 

 

As a healthy (well apart from my knee) 28 year old South African the first thing I thought of to celebrate Heritage Day was to arrange for a trip to my local News Café for a proper breakfast…they even call it the Boerie Breakfast. There is just something special you feel sitting next to the beach looking across the beach with TableMountain in the background whilst stuffing your face with a proper breakfast.

 

 

 

After stuffing my face and looking at this natural wonder I started making plans for a braai and my friend, who took me out for breakfast drove me around so I can get things ready.

 

 

 

Seeing as I’m not able to move around freely said friend also got the fire going and helped braai the meat. When I say meat I mean a packet of boerewors, some sosaties and a greek salad. I know its not what you’d call a traditional braai but for me that’s more than enough.

 

 

 

We started everything early so managed to finish off early as well and just before my guests left I thought I should get a movie to curb the boredom. In order to continue the day’s message I thought I would get a South African movie as our country has grown in more ways than we can imagine.

 

 

 

The movie I got was called 31 Million and is a South African version of a Bollywood movie. The movie is based on a true story (one I’ve never heard of) and plays of in Durban. It follows two Indian brothers who pulled of a heist and bagged 31 million rand. If you want to support our local actors do yourself a favour and watch this movie.

 

 

 

Once the movie was done I realised that it was still early and decided to look for another movie. Since I can’t drive I had to use this magical box I acquired some time ago. Yes, I’m talking about the magical PVR decoder people. Upon searching for a movie I found that Mad Buddies, the new Leon Schuster movie, was available for rental. How traditional can you get!? I love his movies and they always bring a smile to your face. This one has a very appropriate message for all South Africans so try to watch it.

 

 

 

To me this is exactly what I needed to celebrate this day…a braai, good conversation and good South African movies.

Their Playground

So we have a rather dull and wet long weekend in Cape Town which means I’ve been indoors for the majority of the weekend. I’ve also been on crutches so its not as if I could plan anything more but more about that some other time.

Whilst chilling at home I couldn’t help but do some reading and catch up on what’s been happening in good ol’ Souf Efrika.

It appears that our beloved *puke* former ANC Youth League leader has been dominating the local news for the last couple of days. Reports of an issued Arrest Warrant, later confirmed by his “hot shot” attorney, have been doing the rounds. He will apparently be charged with fraud which is allegedly due to his connection to the Ratanga Family Trust.

Of course there was the immediate retaliation from his camp, being the Friends of the Youth League, that the issuing of the warrant is politically motivated. As I’m reading these reports I can’t help but have a strong feeling of déjà vu.

If you’ve been living under a rock you might be wondering where this feeling is coming from but, be that as it may, one has to look no further than the supposed charged he will be facing. These charges are allegedly money laundering, corruption and fraud but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Now where have we seen these charges before? Well if you think a couple of years ago, let’s make it 9 April 2009, the National Prosecuting Authority dropped similar charges against our president Mr Jacob Zuma.

The similarities between JZ and Malema’s current situation make me wonder whether the Youth League’s buddies might have a point. It’s undeniable that Malema still has a massive following within the ANC and with that his influence would be felt by the Zuma camp at the coming elective conference at Mangaung. It makes sense that they would want to silence him ahead of the conference.

It pains me to see how our justice system is being used as a political playground by various role players. This is one of the main reason I have no interest in pursuing a career in the legal practice and if I had to go back I would stay as far as possible from the judicial system.

How many times are we going to see this happening? I honestly think this is going too far and it’s making a mockery of the one organ seized with protecting our democracy. This basically ridicules the concept of checks and balances and we are on the verge of losing the independence of the judicial system.

Don’t misunderstand the aforesaid statement, in no way do I mean that the charges are fabricated but it’s the manner in which it’s playing out. We’ve all heard the murmurs and allegations about Malema and the Ratanga Family Trust but all of a sudden the NPA is ready to bring the charges against him. It’s all a bit too coincidental to me and makes the underlying feeling of undue influence and political manipulation leave a bitter taste in my mouth.

I do want Malema to face the charges against him but the timing leaves a lot to be desired. Lets hope I’m just being melodramatic and that the NPA just needed the time to complete their investigation.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. Lets wait and see.

Law of Parenting

Since we’re having an extremely wet Saturday in Cape Town I thought I’d share some wise parenting advice with you guys.

 

Well I’m not a parent (if I am I haven’t been told yet!) so I’m allowed to pretend to be a expert, especially since I put my parents through this.

 

Here goes…

 

– The later you stay up, the earlier your child will wake up the next morning.
– The gooier the food, the more likely it is to end up on the carpet.
– The longer it takes you to make a meal, the less your child will like it.
– A sure way to get something done is to tell a child not to do it.
– For a child to become clean, something else must become dirty.
– Toys multiply to fill any space available.
– Yours is always the only child who doesn’t behave.
– If the shoe fits … it’s expensive.
– Backing the car out of the driveway causes your child to have to go to the bathroom.

Issues

So my return to my blog and subsequent migration to WordPress has been dogged by various issues.

 

Firstly I’ve been through a tough time at work which kept my busy for at least a month. This involved being shoved around by my MD and being forced to participate in a array of in fighting and corporate politics. Fortunately it all ended well when the MD summoned me to their boardroom for an open discussion which ultimately led to an honest explanation from her side and sincere apology for dragging me into the mess. I’ll explain everything later on…

 

When this finally ended I got conned into offering my place as a venue for a friends birthday party. The night turned into one wild party which ended with me (as explained by my friends) inviting our neighbour in when she came to ask us to keep it down and one thing led to another. Suffice to say we are avoiding each other at the moment but I digress.

 

During this party I found my laptop on the floor in my room and when I switched it on the screen had a ugly crack and half the screen was gone!

 

Well the laptop has been sent in for repairs but I decided its time for a upgrade so this is my first post on a brand new laptop! In the end it worked out for the best…suppose I should say thanks for the wild party…got laid and a new laptop 😀

 

Since I’m back on line there’s no excuse for neglecting my blog so expect to be spammed with new posts!

I can’t believe I’ve been in Cape Town for almost 2 years now but I’ve never gone to visit the Castle!

Ever since I studied in Stellenbosch I’ve always wanted to but something always came up…you know how it goes when you’re a young student. You either end up partying or drive many miles after some hot piece you’re trying to impress! Well since I’ve grown up a bit (I’d like to think I have – not a word from those who know me from LD :-P) I thought my parents’ visit to Cape Town would be the perfect opportunity for that to finally happen.

We drove through and dad tried his hand at some photography which turned out to be totally awful!

If you’ve ever driven into town (city centre for those up north) you’d know what a sight the castle is and we made it just in time for the last public tour.

After going through the reception area your find a courtyard like area – I don’t remember if the guide actually gave us a name for this area but it kinda reminds of the quad we had at res. In this area you find all the museums depicting the history of the Castle, Cape Town and South Africa as a whole.

Visit to the Castle of Good Hope

Fun Times!

So I mentioned yesterday that I’m on leave for the week 🙂

I decided to take the week off as my folks came to Cape Town for a week and since this is the first time I can actually afford to treat them I decided to go big.

Today I’m taking them to the Castle for the guided tour, mom has been hacking about doing something cultural so what better way then going back in history to explore this wonderful city and its origin. Thereafter I will be taking them to Eastern Food Bazaar to get something to eat. Mom, once again, is the deciding factor here…you can’t keep her away from spicy food so she’ll go crazy!

Tomorrow we’re planning on taking the cable car up to the mountain and enjoy a nice lunch there…lets just hope the weather plays along!

So I had to activate my blog twice in one day!

It’s all good though as I’ve finally managed to get this sorted after having to deal with the demise of the 24.com community.

NOT COOL!

So I’ve had a quick look around and this is so not cool! It might look cool but…

I can’t find anyone!

I know letterdash had its issues but this sucks…at least we had some form of community on LD but here its a mission to find bloggers or to interact with any of the guys I used to follow on the old platform!

Sarchasm, CasperCV, FI, just to mention a few…are you guys here? Where can I find the others if they’re not using this platform?

Please let me know…I really miss the old blogging community and I was really looking forward to getting back to blogging more regularly.
