How to use Google analytics to measure engagement on your blog

How to use Google analytics to measure engagement on your blog : " Are visitors to your blog really engaged in your content? How much of what you write do they read? Is your ‘bounce’ rate an accurate reflection of how engaging your blog is? It’s important to understand how to use Google Analytics and your engagement statistics so that you can understand what your visitors are doing, and work to improve your blog. " One question I have "Is bounce rate a meaningful measure of a blog as compared to a website or is it even more important?" Just thinking my own use of blogs as a reader I might come to the blog and read down through several posts which may not be recorded. Creating value from open data

An interesting blog post from Universities UK on Open Data at http://blog.universitiesuk.ac.uk/2014/06/24/creating-value-open-data Open data, the principle and practice of making data available for anyone to use, for any purpose, at no cost has the potential to make a major impact on the world around us. Given these prospects, the UK higher education sector is already starting to get on board. A number of universities (Southampton, Oxford, and the Open University, to name a few) have taken on the agenda, and are rapidly developing tools and practices. Sector agencies and bodies such as JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee), HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency), the Research Councils, and the Royal Society are also working in the same direction. No Money where my mouth is!

Three things came together I wanted a new personal web site, ideally with blogging options; I don't want to pay for it; and I have been blogging about some of these tools, issues, for and around sustainable website so I want to do another site . Which tool? There are a variety of tools of that could have been used ( http://websitesustainability.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/nuffield-bursary-studentship-web.html )  but I went for Weebly.com because of the reasons mentioned in previously postings; but essentially I am not web designer and I wanted something quick with a reasonable URL.  So welcome to  http://scottjturner.weebly.com/   What did I find new to me? Actually integrating it with Google Webmaster was easier than I had expected - essentially follow the instructions:  http://kb.weebly.com/webmaster-tools.html . Creating a blog was very straight forward -  add page and select blog.  Adding a post is simple...

Work in expert's blog

Some of the work from this web sustainability project has been summarised in a recent blog entry at:  http://blogs.northampton.ac.uk/expertsatnorthampton/2011/09/27/web-sustainability-its-gone/ The importance of sustainability of publicly funded web resources is considered. update: usage statistics for this blog

The most popular blog post  was the previous blog about the usage statistics for this blog. I am not sure why this is the most popular but as it is, here is an update on that blog entry for the whole lifetime of the blog. The figure above shows the summary of the usage overall over the lifetime of the blog. What isn't shown clearly here though is several people are coming to the blog from social network sites such as twitter and Facebook. A welcome surprise was the number of page views from the countries other than the UK (with the Pakistan and United States being the two largest groups). This work has been supported by funding from JISC. The site can be viewed at https://sites.google.com/site/emknorg/ and www.web-sustainability.net. Sustainability and legacy

Sites like The East Midlands Knowledge Network (EMKN) site are worth saving for many reasons (including but certainly not exclusively: return on the investment both in terms of money and time; and as an information source). The site " The Universities of the East Midlands contain an enormous wealth of knowledge and expertise but it’s not always easy to navigate to the sources of support that could make a real difference to your business. The East Midlands Knowledge Network (EMKN) website will help guide you to the broad range of services that are available to help grow and develop your company ." EMKN (2011) The 'rescued' sites can also be later be taken over by others at a future date or taken as a starting for similar site. Perhaps one that is not immediately clear is their value in their own right as a record. Even if these sites are never added to, maintaining them means potentially a snapshot of the activities of partnerships, issues, the kind of activitie...
