Website Sustainability

The biggest problem with using Google Sites to save an at risk site is the size of the site. Google Sites is great for relatively simple sites with a smaller number of pages. This site is much larger around 900 individual pages and has been built up over time. To get a sense of the problem and to find out whether there are multiple copies of the same pages and what needs to be replicated and what does. A graphical mapping tool has been used  the 30day trial version of Powermapper ( http://www.powermapper.com/download/mapper/download.htm ). It has revealed the site complexity of the site and the sites structure. This work has been supported by funding from JISC. In an earlier blog entry the use of the public folder within a dropbox account was discussed as a way of hosting a website. Dropbox is a fanatastic tool, it provides an easy and free way of moving a site if you are happy to have static content. So for rescuing a site this is a great tool. I have found a few problems, which is not surprising as it is being used in a way it was not designed for, - You can add google analytic s to it, but it is difficult to (I have found a way yet) of adding a Webmaster profile to it though. -Similar problem with Bing Webmaster toolbox you can add a profile but not a sitemap. So it will allow verification of the site through meta-tags.
