Radio Propagation

Indices from the U.S. NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder Colorado, updated every three hours and published here in real time:

Solar-terrestrial indices for 28 October follow. Solar flux 93 and estimated planetary A-index 7. The estimated planetary K-index at 1500 UTC on 29 October was 0.33. No space weather storms were observed for the past 24 hours. No space weather storms are predicted for the next 24 hours.

What does this mean for AM DXers?

Here's the short story: High solar flux (solar flux is expected to bottom out at around 70 in the upcoming couple of years, and then begin rising to 150-200 when the next solar maximum is reached around mid-2020's), high A-index (over 10) geomagnetic storms, proton events and polar-cap absorption are bad news; they tend to mean poor long-distance reception of mediumwave and tropical band shortwave stations, especially paths over polar areas and paths to east and west of your location are affected. If you live far north, reception may be good towards south and vice versa on the Southern hemisphere.

The propagation indices are temporarily unavailable. The Propagation page is also unable to retrieve the indices from NOAA. We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope that the problem will be fixed soon. Meanwhile, you can get the latest A-Index and Solar Flux forecast by clicking here.
