Displeased

For my two poems, I have chosen to write about “One Perfect Rose” by Dorothy Parker and “Marks” by Linda Pastan.  Each of these poems made me laugh when reading them; each uses a bit of irony. Both poems exhibits a tone of annoyed and irritated.   In “Marks” the mother is graded as if she is a student.  The poet uses a variety of different grading system, each used by a different member of the family.  The mother then turns the tables on her family by adopting their systems and drops out.  In “One Perfect Rose” the woman is giving a rose, which usually symbolizes love and beauty, but she does not want just another rose.  The speaker believes the rose has lost it meaning from being over used.  One thing the poems share is that both women are less than pleased with others, however, for very diverse reasons.  The mother is displeased with her family rating her as average and the woman is displeased with receiving yet another rose.  Each poem addresses stereotype although I’m not sure they are meant too.  In “Marks” it is expected that it is the mother’s job to care for the house, such as, ironing and making supper.  In “One Perfect Rose” the woman is expected to not only appreciate the rose but want one.

One Mom to the Next

I chose the poems “Daystar” and “Marks” beacause they represent two mothers struggles in just being a mom in general. They both have a tone that seems angry and frustrated like they want more out of life. These two mothers are in the same situation, they want more out of their life and are strggling to reach the thing that they want, freedom. The children and husbands are testing them literally and emtionally. The mother in “Daystar” they test her patience and she just want to get away and is struggling to do so even for just one hour a day. The other mother is literally getting graded fore her performance around the house. Both of their husbands obviously don’t appriciate what thet got because one “Lurches” and the other so kindly gave her a “B”. Both women just want to escape one by dropping out and leaving and the other dropping out of the scene for just a little while. How these poems mean is they are mothers looking for their break through everyday mothering job and free themselves from the life that they dont want.

I wanted to know what daystar meant. So I looked it up in the handy dandy OED and it represents the sun or morining star and I that the mother in “Daystar” is almost wishing against this star to break free of the awful day she’s having. Even something so common could be so helpful in the time of need. That’s the idea that I got trying to figure out how to incorporate that in. Any thoughts 007ers?
