I’m at Boskone 63! Come see me!
Hi, everyone!
Another year has passed, and here we are back at my favorite convention, Boskone! Granted, part of the reason this is my favorite convention is because I just have to get on the train from my house and I’m there in 25 minutes or so, but one of the OTHER reasons is that it is the best damned little convention in the northeast, even if it is held in Boston in February.
I’m involved in a variety of programming this year, so here’s my schedule, if you’ve a mind to track me down:
Reading: Auston Habershaw
Friday, 7:30pm
Independence Conference Room
To open the con, I’ll be reading from some of my work. I haven’t quite decided what it will be, but depending on the crowd, I will probably be reading from If Wishes Were Retail. Come and listen! (I do the voices!)
Panel: Writer’s Block – Fact, Fantasy, and Coping
Saturday, 11:30am
Harbor II
Description: I had a year-long block and am overcoming it. Here’s how.
That about sums it up!
Autographing: Auston Habershaw, James Cambias, and Fonda Lee
Saturday, 1:00pm
Galleria
Come for Fonda Lee or James Cambias, stay for me! I’ll sign anything that has my name on it! (Please don’t leave me there all alone!)
Panel: Weaving Magic into the Modern World
Saturday, 4:00pm
Marina IV
How do you convince a contemporary reader that magic can exist just around the corner of their everyday life? This panel is all about the craft of writing fantasy set in the here and now. We’ll dive into the techniques authors use to seamlessly blend the fantastical with the familiar, creating a sense of wonder that feels both believable and grounded. Learn how to thread enchantment through a modern setting in a way that lets readers say, “Yeah, I could see that happening,” while still buying into the magic of the story.
Panel: The Lure of the Heist
Sunday, 11:30am
Burroughs
Description: From crime fiction to mainstream movies, the heist plot has rapidly spread, spawning SF/F takes like The Quantum Thief and The Lies of Locke Lamora. Given its immediate dramatic tension, rising stakes, and inevitable plot twist (What’s their plan? Will it work? What clever surprise is the story going to spring?), the heist provides narrative advantages to authors in genres from horror to romantasy. Panelists will examine the heist plot’s versatility and broad appeal and discuss examples.
Well, that’s my weekend sorted! How about yours! Hoping to see you all there!
I’m at WorldCon Seattle This Week!
This week, from Wednesday 8/13 to Sunday 8/17, I will be in Seattle Washington for the World Science Fiction Convention. If you see me, feel free to say hi!
I don’t have any panels this year (boo!), but if you want to see me in a more official capacity, I’ll be signing copies of If Wishes Were Retail at the Tachyon Publications booth on the Dealer’s Floor at 1pm on Saturday, 8/16.
Come meet me, tell me your terrible tales of terrible minimum wage jobs, and get a signature (and possibly a sticker!) all on one place.
Also, I will have copies of my story collection Faceless Galaxy on me all weekend, so I will also be signing those and am happy to sell you a copy (I will also have postcard and bookmarks – basically a walking merch factory) and sign it and talk to you about all your experiences stalking the powerful in the far-flung settlements of the Union of Stars.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all!
But Auston, Where ELSE Can I See You?
Okay, so say Seattle’s too far away – I’ve got you covered you right-coast people! Just after the convention is over, I will be in Brooklyn, NYC, doing a reading and signing copies of my books on Tuesday, August 19th at Barrow’s Intense Tasting Room on 86 34th Street, Brooklyn, NY, from 7-9pm.
Join me as well as fellow authors Nicholas Kaufmann, Steven Van Patten, and Mimi Mondal for a night of books, laughs, and booze!
Hell, if you’re back from Seattle in time, do both! I’ll sign two copies of my books for you – I’m generous like that! Come one and all!
I’m Reading/Signing in Brooklyn, 8/19, ONE NIGHT ONLY!
Hello, NYC folks (and adjacent)!
In about a month, on Tuesday, August 19th, I’m going to be in lovely Brooklyn for a little event called Brooklyn Books & Booze, organized by the immensely talented Randee Dawn. The event is held at Barrow’s Intense Tasting Room at 86 34th Street, Brooklyn, NY.
I, and fellow authors Nicholas Kaufmann, Steven Van Patten, and Mimi Mondal will be there to read our work to those attending, to sell and sign books as well (I hope to have copies of both If Wishes Were Retail AND Faceless Galaxy on hand), and to sample the fine wares of the good people at Barrows. Well, others will – I, myself, do not drink – but come ANYWAY and I promise I will be good company.
As for what I’ll be reading, I’m going to do the first chapter of If Wishes Were Retail for sure, but if I have time (doubtful?), I might treat everybody to a snippet of Faceless, as well. Which story? I don’t know – you’ll have to come to find out!
The event is from 7pm-9pm on Tuesday, August 19th and, get this, it’s FREE! Hard to beat free!
Writing News
“Auston, how’s your book selling?”
Funny you should ask, but I have no idea! All I know is that If Wishes Were Retail is, in fact, selling and the reviews are piling up. They are overwhelmingly positive, and thank you very much for those of you who have given my funny little book about genies and malls and suburbia a chance!
If you have read it (and liked it), please leave me a review on the online venue of your choice! Tell your friends! Coerce your relatives! Alarm your neighbors!
If you haven’t read it, CLICK THIS LINK TO BUY NOW. No pressure though.
(Just imagine me standing just over your left shoulder, staring, mouthing the words “BUY. MY. BOOOK.” over and over.)
“Don’t you have, like, ANOTHER book coming out?”
Yes! I DO! This is not fantasy. And not humorous. And also not a novel, but rather a collection of linked short stories (so…sort of a novel? Every read Sapkowski’s The Last Wish, which introduced the Witcher? Well, it’s like that.).
What it IS, is called Faceless Galaxy, and it will introduce you to your new favorite little blob of murderous goo, name of Faceless, who kills people for money in the Union of Stars. I’ve been calling it “alien noir,” but you can call it yours by PREORDERING NOW! It releases in a mere two weeks, on August 5th! Check it out!
So…that’s it for me, for now – in Brooklyn on 8/19, novel out and doing well, collection coming…yup! Talk to you guys soon, and thanks so much for reading!
Come See Me in Buffalo, THIS SATURDAY, 7/12/25!
Hey, friends!
I’m going to be out in Buffalo this coming weekend. Part of the time there I’ll be going to 6 Flags, and part of the time there I’ll be checking out Niagara Falls with the kids, and another part of the time I’ll
be seeing Weird Al in concert. But the rest of the time?
I’m going to be at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center at 7:30pm signing books and having a conversation with my friend and utterly fantastic author Ed Ashton, all courtesy of Talking Leaves Books!
I’m going to be plugging IF WISHES WERE RETAIL, my cozy comic fantasy about a genie selling books in a mall, and Ed will be talking about his latest scifi adventure, THE FOURTH CONSORT.
For those of you who don’t know Ed (and honestly, you should – he’s waaaay better known than I am!), he is the author of the novel Mickey 7 which was made into the movie Mickey 17 directed by Bong Joon-ho and starring Robert Pattinson. Ed is a brilliant guy (he’s helping cure cancer!) and a very nice person and such a good sport for coming out and doing this event with me, so please don’t embarrass me by having a lot of empty chairs! Come out and support the human beings making art and writing stories, and support the great indie bookstores like Talking Leaves by coming out to see two guys chatting about writing, fantasy, scifi, novels, comedy, and more! Plus we’ll be signing books!
So, see you at Hallwalls on 7/12, this Saturday evening, at 7:30!

ARCs now available on NetGalley and Edelweiss!
Don’t forget about Faceless Galaxy!
Just as a reminder, my linked short story collection, Faceless Galaxy, releases in a little more than a month! It’s available for preorder now, so go and pick it up!
The pitch:
Launching If Wishes Were Retail! Functional Nerds, Armed with a Book, and more!
It’s official! IF WISHES WERE RETAIL is now out in the world for the public to enjoy! The release date was yesterday, and I celebrated with a launch event at the wonderful Pandemonium Books in Cambridge, MA. (More on that in a minute)
Accompanying this first week of my book’s official lifespan, I’ve done a couple interviews. First is on the wonderful podcast, Functional Nerds, hosted by Tracy Townsend and Patrick Hester.
Check the podcast out here! I go on and on and tell a bunch of stories about my strange, circuitous route to authorhood!
Next, I’ve got an interview up on Armed with a Book, hosted by Kriti K. This is great for those people who prefer the quick read over the long podcast, so check this one out, too!
As for the launch event, it was a great time! We had a full room (in fairness, the room was not that big) and the interview with Andrew Prentiss over at Pandemonium was excellent and led to a lot of thoughtful discussion. I thank everyone who came out, and hope they all enjoy the book!
IF WISHES WERE RETAIL soldiers on! Go get it! Here are some buy links:
Tachyon (direct from publisher)
And for those of you who are of an audiobook persuasion, never fear! The audiobook of the novel will be coming in July! Stay tuned!
I leave you know with a picture of me reading, just so you all know what you missed yesterday at Pandemonium:

Just picture me, talking for a straight 90 minutes and doing funny voices, and you get the idea…
IF WISHES WERE RETAIL Giveaways!
Anyone want a FREE book?
My upcoming comic fantasy novel, IF WISHES WERE RETAIL, is coming out in a month (a MONTH!) and to celebrate, my publisher is giving away a couple copies on both Goodreads and Storygraph.
If you’ve been tuning out my constant nattering on about this book, here’s a brief description:
Alex Delmore needs a miracle. She wants out of her dead-end suburban town, but her parents are broke and NYU seems like a distant dream.
Good thing there’s a genie in town—and he’s hiring at the Wellspring Mall.
It’d help if the Jinn-formerly-of-the-Ring-of-Khorad knew even one thing about 21st-century America. It’d help if he weren’t at least as stubborn as Alex. It’d really help if her brother didn’t sell her out to her conspiracy theory-loving, gnome-hating dad.
When Alex and the genie set up their wishing kiosk, they face seemingly-endless setbacks. The mall is failing and management will not stop interfering on behalf of their big-box tenants.
But when the wishing biz might start working, the biggest problem of all remains: People are really terrible at wishing.
It’s funny and heartwarming and it’s about work and reward and dreams in a grinding, late-stage capitalist world, and I’d love for you to read it!
So, again, giveaways are on Goodreads and Storygraph right now! Sign up to win!
“But Auston, audiobooks are really my thing. Any news?”
FUNNY YOU SHOULD ASK!
The audiobook for IF WISHES WERE RETAIL is releasing on July 8th! Narrated by the immensely talented Brittany Goodwin, it will be available just about everywhere audiobooks are sold!
And as one final reminder, I will be celebrating the release of the book with a book signing and Q&A session over at Pandemonium Books and Games in Cambridge MA at 6:30-8:30pm on Tuesday, June 17th. I’d love to see you there!
Click here to register so we know you’re coming!
Very exciting days, friends!
FACELESS GALAXY now on NetGalley, Edelweiss
Big news, everyone!
While I am gearing up to the release of my upcoming novel, IF WISHES WERE RETAIL, is about a month away from release (pre-order here!) and I’m VERY excited about the release event at Pandemonium Books and Games on June 17th, 2025, I want for a moment to plug my other release, coming this August.
Faceless Galaxy
Throughout the gutters and sanitation systems of the civilized galaxy, amorphous, nameless blobs called Torrhoids digest other species’ trash to clean air and water.
The Great Races don’t consider Torrhoids intelligent. But when one Torrhoid receives a baffling kindness, its curiosity ignites. The shapeshifter discovers it can mimic its overlords—not only their voices, but their forms and movements, too.
It can escape the prison planet where it is kept cold, hungry, and fighting for life. It can evade those who would throw it back into the sewers. With ingenuity, quick thinking, and the power of surprise, it can strike down even the oligarchs and influence traders who rule the galaxy. So begins the career of the assassin known only as “Faceless.”
Still learning the cultures of the beings it impersonates, testing the limits of its abilities, and evading revulsion for its natural form, Faceless is never far from detection and death. Ethics are a luxury it can ill afford.
But as the stories of this sharp, twisty cyberpunk collection prove, a gutter scavenger’s justice may still beat an empire’s.
FACELESS GALAXY is the title of my upcoming short story collection, featuring 10 linked stories (7 reprints, 3 brand new) from my Faceless Cycle, which may remember from such places as Analog Science Fiction and Fact and other science fictional periodicals. Curious about it?
Well, as luck (sorry, artifice) would have it, you can listen to the first story for free over on EscapePod. Check out “Adaptation and Predation” here!
Now, if you liked that and would like the WHOLE BOOK as an Advance Reader Copy (ARC), you can get it now through NetGalley and Edelweiss.
Go, read! Leave a review! Tell me you loved it! Short fiction anthologies don’t sell that well, traditionally speaking, but this one is more like a fix-up novel, in which we follow Faceless on its adventures through the very formative years of its shape-shifting life. We all feel a little out of place, don’t we? Feel like the world doesn’t love us? Well, Faceless has got your back! It’s stabbing its way across an amoral universe and inviting you along! Pre-order now!
It’s available as an e-book or as a print on demand title!
In the Meantime
And while you’re waiting for Faceless and his murderous hijinks, take on some lighter fare in the form of my comic novel, IF WISHES WERE RETAIL, which will be coming out in a few short weeks!
