Stuff and Things for a Sunday, nope! Monday, nope! Holiday Tuesday?

I have been sporadic at best in this blogging biz. It’s that whole trying to find balance thing and I’ve been having a bit of trouble getting it all in, so to speak.  Hell, it’s taken me three days to actually get this going!!

Today is Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in Québec, so I am off work (yay!).  There was a time when I celebrated this day with friends and family but I guess those days are gone.  Anyway, it’s hotter than Satan’s Armpit out there and I am sans pool (still).  I’ve been waiting for a new liner since May.  Long story, short… if all goes well, I’ll be swimming by June 30.  Doesn’t help on a day like today where the temps are at a lovely 33°C (91°F) with a humidex that makes it feel like 44°C (111°F).  Thank Bob for A/C, is all I can say!

So I am inside, listening to good Québécois music that brings me back to my days in high school.  On this day I am always pulled towards my French Québécoise roots.  Harmonium, Beau Dommage, Plume, Robert Charlebois, Offenbach, Paul Piché and many other wonderful singers from Québec are my soundrack today.  This following piece of music, no lyrics, is just so beautiful and should not disturb you as you keep reading, if you were so inclined.  And I just found out one of the founders of the group, Serge Fiori, died today.  Very à propos dans he die on this holiday, being a voice for a québécois generation, but way too young at 73… 😦

So, anyway…. back to why I’ve been only half-assed blogging and falling way behind on all your wonderful posts… And it’s taking me forever to write this as I get up and dance and sing along to some tunes before coming back to my computer.

I want to read more – books that is – so that means reading less blogs.  Then I feel guilty. Which I know is silly because bloggers are not sitting by their computer waiting for my comment.  Still.  As you know, I like to be a good blogger, meaning I don’t write and run nor do I read and run.  I overwhelm my own damn self in the process.  Ridiculous, I know.

And, I AM reading more.  I am rather pleased with myself thus far.  I have read (and listened) to 19 out of the 30 books I am aiming for.  I’m five books ahead of schedule!  Woot!

Right now, I am delighting/torturing myself reading the most delicious A Thousand Feasts by Nigel Slater.  Not only can the man cook and take beautiful photos (I follow him on Instagram) but his writing skills are wonderful and evocative.  This one I read at lunchtime and/or, when I decide to sit, at home.  I am listening to The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, wonderfully narrated by Tom Hanks (so glad it’s not Ann reading because she can be rather monotone, as I learned with These Precious Days) during my walks, mostly on my lunchtime walks.  On my Kindle, so before bed, I am reading The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn because B waxed poetic about his writing.  He is not wrong.  Considering I feel pretty neutral about baseball, I am pleasantly surprised with reading about it and about the sports journalism business.  Almost as good as baseball movies, which I bizarrely love.  As well, I have The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien that I am (re)reading with Sammi and friends.  We already read all three Lord of the Rings books and why not?  One chapter per week and then we discuss them.  Fun stuff.

In April, I went with a couple colleagues, to Toronto and then the Muskoka region in Ontario.  We have an extension programme for Viking ships and had to go check out the suppliers and venues (how sad 😉 ).  What a gorgeous area!  Lake Muskoka was still partially frozen in many spots.  I loved our visit with Sainte-Marie-Among-the-Hurons and picked up a puzzle.  Erm… Rog, you don’t DO puzzles!  Well, maybe I should start!  So, yes, this is also how I spend some of my time.  Emptying my mind of all the stuff and piecing the puzzle together.  Just one-fifth left to do.

I planted my garden.  Got me some raised beds – so there Mrs. and son Groundhog!  Course, they ate all my shoots because I had left them on the deck for a day… Anyhoo.  Planted in the four nice tall bins plus some pots on stools only to find that now the squirrels?  I’m guessing… are not too shy either!  Sonova…

What else?  Oh, I have managed to start running/walking again.  Going quite gently and so far so good.  Have to get up stupid early with these temps, though:  5:30 in the a.m.!  I’ve also started a mobility programme and it’s quite different from other exercise programmes I have tried before.  This one really focuses on the joints and a mix of flexibility, strength and overall mobility – hense the name.  I am liking it so far.  Plus, there are no promises of a “flat belly in six weeks”!  It’s an overall wellness programme that I can get down with.  Because I just want to feel like I can keep going well into my eighties!  Plus, whenever I can, I walk during my lunch hour – even went on Monday when it was stupid-hot!  Here’s a few pics of the many, MANY I take 🙂

I have also been baking (every couple of weeks) as well as cooking myself some delicious meals.  I signed up for “Odd Bunch” – they deliver a box once per week and I love the surprise of discovering what’s inside.  These veggies can be odd-sized and rejected by stores for it but honestly, after two deliveries?  I cannot see what’s wrong with any item!

I’ve kept you long enough 🙂  By the end of writing this, the following song came on and I felt a sort of melancholy.  All in all… a decent day.

Translation (by Deepl because I was too lazy to do the whole thing myself!)

Sunday Stuff – Thoughts and Images

One week from today, we will be sitting on a deck between Port Canaveral and the Dominican Republic, catching the sun’s rays on our “too-white-for-now” skin.  Or, maybe, we will be selecting what to eat for lunch at one of the multiple buffets.  We might be exploring the ship further, no doubt, and possibly finding a place to watch some of the Super Bowl later that night.  Or not.  But we are open to the possibilities.

I cannot wait.  The last time I was on a real vacation (read:  don’t make my bed, cook my meals, drive my car) was five years ago, that first week of March, 2020, before all hell broke loose.  I’m overdue!

Until then…

This past week has been miserably cold and I did not get my daily walks in as much as I would have liked.  It’s hard to convince yourself to take a lunchtime walk (at work) when the temps are at a feels like of -25℃ (-13℉) and you’ve only your jeans to protect your legs.  Nope.  Much as I wanted to finish “White Fang”, the price to my limbs was too high.  Jack London would have to wait.

You see, I’ve taken to listening to audio books on my walks, now.  I know that puts me in the same boat as all those people walking with their own ear buds, ignoring passersby.  I justify this by telling myself these are solo exercise walks and not in the same vein as when I walk, real camera in hand, looking for birds or whatever nature to capture with my lens and my ears.  No, no, I am not ignoring people – and in truth, all that cross my path get a smile and a “bonjour” and… It’s not like we were gonna chat anyway, right?

Friday was the first days I could take a lunchtime walk (from the office).  It wasn’t a beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine, but I did not fear for my limbs, either.  I only had 20-25 minutes to walk and the it was mostly drab and lonely with things closed for the winter.

Thankfully, once I arrived at the Atwater Market, the outdoor gallery gave me a spot of colour

Come Saturday, the skies were that beautiful winter blue, the sun was shining and the temps?  Well… let us just say that the thick snow pants, the wool hat and the ski mittens were not too much!  I had 1.5 hours left in “White Fang” and by George, I was going to finish it.  Fully bundled, out the door I went and walked for 6.5 km walk in -16℃ (feels like -26℃) and honestly, I have trouble believing it was that because I regularly had to take off my mitts because my hands were too warm!  While I listened to the wonderful voice of Bob Thomley read the last chapters of White Fang, I walked, enjoying the beautiful day.  It was truly glorious!

A little editing fun

Saturday night, after watching our shows, we watched Emilia Pérez and loved it.  A rather original movie – seems we need to go outside of North America to get original stuff lately.

Sunday was a lazy day.  Another cold one with no sunshine did not invite me to go out there.  Plus, I was finished my audio book!  So I watched the rather strange, yet not horrible “What Happens Later” with Meg Ryan and David Duchovny.

I heated my leftover and delicious lemon tuna linguine (sorry, forgot to take a pic!) and decided to watch “A Real Pain”.  Who’d a thunk Jesse Eisenberg was NOT the neurotic, pain in the ass character but Kieran Culkin was?  And both did a good job in their roles.

Lookit me.  I can now say I have seen at least three movies that are nominated for various Academy Awards.  Still time to catch a few more, right?

Stay warm (those in frigid climes) and see ya!

Come with me.

An alley?  It’s dangerous.  Don’t cars come through?

Not this one.  It’s special.  The neighbours got together to create a safe and beautiful space.

Wow.  Look at that!  How long has this taken?

Not quite finished, but we started it last year.

Look!  One of those little book boxes!

My idea.  Though whoever put in the French-English dictionary doesn’t quite get the concept…

Hah! Well, ya never know; someone sans computer or smart phone could come along.

Hahaha!  Right!

All that’s missing are chairs.

We’re working on it.

A delightful reading room.

We call it an oasis.

This is an alley in Montreal, just behind St. Denis Street, in the Plateau Mont Royal borough, what they call the St. Louis Square.  A delightful area.  I wrote about it here.

Friday Night’s Alright

Monday was Quadrille Monday on dVerse, hosted by De from “WhimsyGizmo“.  She instructed us to use the word “Friday” in any way that suited us, as long as we kept our poem to a strict 44-word count.  Last night, as I was tossing and turning instead of sleeping, a thought came to me.  So, here is the result!  And here I was thinking I wouldn’t play…

Friday, age five to thirteen
Yay! Cartoons on Saturday!

Friday, age eighteen to, let’s say 25
Sweet!  Let’s go out to dance and drink!

Friday, age 26 to 65
Work week is over, time to do household chores

Friday, retirement age
What? It’s Friday? It’s always Friday!

All About Books 2023 Version

Since I’m still kinda meh creatively (writing-wise), what better than to, once again, steal borrow this quiz from LA, who got the quiz from The World’s Common Tater.  Why not, right?  Plus I love to read and I so happen to be in a big reading phase (though still way behind on my goal for the year).  So, here I go with my responses to the 19 questions.

Ah hell… I was looking for an image for this post within my blog and realised I did a similar post last September.  The questions are mostly different so, to hell with it, I’m still going forth!

How many books are too many books in a series?

Once upon a time, I was big into series.  I read and was none to sad to finish Les Rois maudis (The Accursed Kings) by Maurice Druon (7) – mostly because all 7 books were in one mega-huge and heavy paperback (thank gawd it was paperback and not hard cover!).  Of course, I loved the Harry Potter series (7), as well.  Nowadays? Two in a series is more than enough for me, thank you, very much.

How do you feel about cliffhangers?

Not a fan.

Hardback or paperback?

Either/or for daytime reading.  Kindle for nighttime or travel.

Favorite book?

Hmmm… Impossible for me to name one.

Least favorite book?

For Whom the Bell Tolls, Ernest Hemingway.  Just blow up the bridge already and go home. I don’t care.

Love triangles, yes or no?

Not really.  I mean if the book was good and there was one, I wouldn’t stop reading it, but I definitely do not seak them out. Plus, I can’t do romances anymore.

The most recent book you just couldn’t finish?

I’m pigheaded and will finish books, no matter how much they suck.  I have, however, put them aside and picked them up years later… Mrs. Dalloway took me five attempts!  Right now, Wanderlust, by Rebecca Solnit has been put aside.

A book you’re currently reading?

Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers, J.R.R. Tolkien.  (Funny, last year I meantioned the first book). I am also reading La Duchesse et le roturier, Michel Tremblay (Funny, I was reading the 2nd in the searies last year). And, for nighttime kindle time, Jodi Picoult’s Wish You Were Here is about to be started.

Last book you recommended to someone?

My Grandmother Sends Her Regards, and Apologises, Fredrik Backman

Oldest book you read?

Jeez.  I have no idea. I’ve read some Shakespeare, so I guess he’s the oldest…

Newest book you read?

The Memory of Animals, Claire Fuller

Favorite author?

Maeve Binchy.  Jodi Picoult.  Can’t decide between the two.

Buying books or borrowing them?

Both.

A book you dislike that everyone else seems to love?

Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy.  I know, I know. A classic.  Half of the book was great. Anything to do with Anna, I was ready to throw her in front of the train.

Bookmarks or dog ears?

Dog ears!!!  NEVER!  And you best not ever do that to one I lend you!

A book you can always re read?

I don’t usually reread, to be honest – there are too many books to get to!  I did reread Jane Eyre…

Can you read while listening to music?

Only if it’s classical.  No singing.

One POV or multiple POVs?

I have enjoyed more than one POV, The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver, being one of them. (Each one was separated by chapter and font.)  But it must be done right and not having me going back because I don’t know who’s view I’m reading – that annoys me to no end.

Do you read a book in one sitting or over multiple days?

Of course it depends on the size of the book… I used to be able to read in one sitting (say a 200-250 pager) but now, it is over multiple days; weeks, even, because this annoying thing called work that takes up time in my day 😉

Old books my neighbour was throwing out and I rescued (but still have not read)

Monday Meandering Mind

“They” say it takes twenty-one days to create a habit… Right?  Oh hell, naw.  I just looked it up (coz I really don’t like to spread fallacies) and NOPE! The book you wrote in 1960, Dr. Maxwell Maltz, you lied!  Apparently it can take anywhere from two months to eight months to build a new behaviour in your life.  Well, shit.  Doesn’t that just blow my whole post to smithereens.  Maybe ya shoulda looked it up before, dumb-dumb.

Under Twenty One Prohibition Sign In Crossed Out Red Circle Vector Icon Stock Illustration - Download Image Now

Neither here nor there.  I am officially proclaiming that I have been in the process of creating a habit since my first run of the year on March 5th.  Why didn’t I start sooner?  Coz I didn’t.  And I live in a place that has too much snow (still) and ice and crappy conditions (until now) and besides I’m not a even close to being a die-hard runner like those I see run past my house, no matter the conditions:  sleet, snow, wind, using crampons on their shoes… no, not for me, thank you, very much.

Now that the bicycle paths are mostly clear and the temps have been hanging on either side of the freezing mark, I have made it a mission to go every other day.  So far, I’m five runs in and have increased my time.  Woot!

What Am I Bingeing?

I’ve had a few shows on the go.  I like to watch one, then another, and another rather than binge just the one show from start to finish.  I have noticed that when I do binge 2-3-4 episodes of the same show, I barely remember them later.  It’s like mindlessly eating popcorn until you finish the bowl and are surprised to find it empty.  I’d rather savour.

I have been challenging myself.  I am watching “The Empress” in German, with English subtitles.  I am surprised at how many words I pick up (I took German for two semesters in college, waaaaay back when.  My goodness, is it possible it was almost thirty years ago?)  It’s been interesting to learn about Elisabeth, Empress of Austria and Queen of Hungary.

I am also watching “Women at War” in French (don’t need the subtitles, though I keep them on just in case, that French from France accent occasionally gets me).  This one is darker and is the story of four women during WWI.  I’m only one episode in.

I am also watching “The Offer” – this is so enjoyable.  It’s about the making of “The Godfather” through the eyes and experience of Al Ruddy, producer.  Tell me, in the umpteen times you have seen this movie, did you ever pay attention to who the producer was?  I can tell you I did not.  Had zero clue.  Halfway through the series, and trying to stretch it out, the urge to watch The Godfather NOW, instead of at the end of the series, hit.  So, why not?  And, to make it perfect, make it dinner and a movie by having spaghetti and meatballs and wine – I mean, how can you not?  It’s so cool to see the vision, the troubles they had (No Al Pacino! He’s too short and  he’s a nobody theatre actor!), the negotiations… And recognizing bits from the movie in the series and vice-versa. If you are a fan of The Godfather, this show is like candy.  I want to gobble it up at the same time as I want to stretch it out.

What Am I Reading?

I am not a re-reader.  I can count on one hand how many books I have read more than once (and not more than twice).  For me, I figure there are so many books out there, why would I read one I already have?  I am impressed by those who have their favourites and have read them countless times.  This is the case for all the other members of the informal group from Sammi’s Scribbles. They are huge Tolkien fans and have read the books over and over, and in the case of Sammi, have multiple versions of the books.  I decided to join in for the fun of it.  We are now reading the second book from The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers.  Last year we read The Fellowship of the Ring. It’s pretty cool. We read half a chapter per week and exchange thoughts on Sammi’s blog.  It takes us most of the year to read just one of the books.  Sammi must have been busy last week because Tolkien Tuesday did not happen.  I’m wondering if I should just read the second half for tomorrow or what…  And since half a chapter per week is not much reading…

I am also reading Das Parfum, by Patrick Süskind – the French translation, since my friend Linda leant it to me, but also because I like to keep my French skills up by reading a French book every 3-4 books.  I prefer to read in the original language but in this case, the original is in German and so reading it in English or in French didn’t matter.  I saw the movie many moons ago and remember the gist of it.  I prefer to read the book after seeing the movie anyway, because I am never disappointed.  I am not with this one, either. The writing is so rich.  I read this one in bed…. and,

I am also beta reading a book for Rochelle.  Since my Kindle is being a biyatch and won’t let me download it (I think the cable is the issue), I have to read it off my laptop – only so much book I like to read on a computer.

Do you ever read more than one book at a time?  I never thought I would.  I have gone so far as to tell those who do that they are nuts and how can they possibly follow all the plot lines?  Turns out, it is more than possible.

Oh! And before I forget.  With all those peeps sharing their flowers, and me still buried in snow, I was beyond excited to see this:

Right next to a foot of snow.  In my front yard.  Go figure.  For a little perspective:

How do you like them apples?  No wonder I had a spring in my step and the energy to start running!

Thanks for hanging with me and I wish for you a lovely week.

One Day – Friday Fictioneers

Well, well, well… would you look at that?  Rochelle really is sneaky!  She must have missed my participation coz why else would she lift ask me to “John Hancock” my photo.  Not to subtle, my friend!  But that’s okay coz it HAS been a good long while and maybe my mojo is slowly coming back, just like my remodel is coming together… not quite there yet but almost functional!  Should you want to place, just click on Rochelle’s name to be brought to her site for the how-to’s and once you see how easy-peasy it is, add your link to your 100-word story by clicking on my frog below. G’head, you know you want to!

Autberry Frog Reading Book Statue

She sat there daydreaming, or was she reading? head resting on her hand; elbow, anchored to the table.  She took an absent-minded sip of coffee now and again.  It was a Friday morning ritual that had now become his.  His being to gaze at her through the sheer curtain of the restaurant.  No, he wasn’t stalking her – never something so creepy as that!  He just marvelled at her sense of peace.  She seemed to be at ease with herself and, while he really wanted to make her acquaintance, he was afraid to disrupt that sense quiet grace.  Maybe next week…

For Love Of Reading, Answering The Bookish A-Z Questions

I know I’ve not finished my Catskills series.  It requires fiddling with my fingers and trying to write it in a manner enjoyable to read.  I am smack-dab in the middle of my moving/demolition/renovation and cannot seem to sit down for long enough to do so.  Even though I quit my job, I still seem to have no hours to spare, except to take breaks and read a post or two, go back to work, etc.

So, when I landed on Ally, of The Spectacled Bean’s post, I found myself thinking up my own answers to the questions.  So, between schlepping boxes and clothes, et al, I come back here to answer another.  Why not, right? I have until Sunday night to be done with the house so… not much left to do (she tries to convince herself…)

Author You’ve Read the Most Books From: This was a toss-up and I had to google the number of books.  Maeve Binchy – at least 11; Jodi Picoult – at least 8.

Best Sequel:  Hmmm… hard to say. The Interview With a Vampire books were all enjoyable (the ones I read); and the series from The Kent Family Chronicles by John Jakes:  The Bastard, The Rebel, et al. were also good.  I cannot remember thinking, dang, they should have stopped at the previous one. Mind you, that was a bazillion years ago, so..

Currently Reading: LOTR, The Fellowship of the Ring in a reading group; we only read half a chapter per week, so I am also reading, I Am a Girl From Africa, by Elizabeth Nyamayaro on my Kindle (in bed) and Thérèse et Pierrette à l’école des Saint-Anges by Michel Tremblay, because I like to have a book-book for reading in my moments.  I like to read a French book every 4-5 books to keep my skillz up.

Drink Choice While Reading: Don’t really have one and depends on the time of day and my mood.  Could be coffee, tea or wine or an Aperol Spritz or….

E reader or physical book:  Both.  I prefer a physical book but when travelling or before bed (no night light needed), I’ll choose an E-reader.

Fictional character you probably would have dated in high school:  Hmmm… None come to mind.

Glad You Gave this Book a Chance: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, J.K. Rowling (as if anyone doesn’t know this!). My sister kept telling me to read it. I would read the first few pages and meh… she pushed some more and then I devoured them all.

Hidden Gem:  Gosh. West With the Night, Beryl Markham.  I actually listened to this on Audible, read by the fabulous Julie Harris, which added a level of wow to the book.  I have recommended this book to anyone who will listen – and hey, Ernest Hemingway highly recommended her and he recommended no one!

Important Moment in Your Reading Life:  I cannot think of any one particular book.  So many have touched me deeply in one way or another.  However, having access to so many books at Boucherville Elementary School and reading all the Black Stallions and all the Chica D’Oro (about a palomino horse) books with my friend Lynne marks my true start of loving to read.

Just FinishedA Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman. It had been recommended to me by more than a few people so I finally succumbed.  I fell in love with this grouchy not-so-mean-as-he-wants-people-to-think Swede.

Kind of Books I Won’t Read (anymore):  I no longer can stand historical romance which I used to devour.  I tried one the other day.  Nope.

Longest Book You’ve ReadShogun, James Clavell.  All 1210 pages of it.  Texas, by James Michener came in close, though the version I read was in two volumes so doesn’t quite count, does it?  Anyone who had the single volume, got 1096 pages…

Major Book Hangover Because Of:  Does this mean that I didn’t want to end? Or that stayed with me for a long time?  Either way, it’s hard to say off the cuff.  I shall have to think long and hard on this one.

Number of Cases You Own: Four.  But there are books to be found all over the place.  I have a lamp with four glass “shelves”  There are books on three of them.

One Book You’ve Read Multiple Times: I am not a re-reader, though I have read Pride and Prejudice twice and am re-reading the LOTR – because of the group thing I mentioned above.

Preferred Place to Read: Comfy chair in the living room, outside in the shade (still comfy chair, please) or in bed, with lots of pillows to support my back.

Quote That Inspires You, or Gives You All the Feels, From a Book You’ve Read:  I don’t really take notes (though I have started to highlight on my kindle) so, if I were to cheat, I’d have to go look at said notes.  Obviously didn’t leave that much of a mark if I have to look, right?

Reading Regret:  Going to a French high school, the required reading was not what we would call “the classics” (though I am sure my French teachers would protest).  I mean the Anglo classics.  So, determined to make up for the lack, I read a few For Whom the Bell Tolls – blow up the bridge already, you’re killing me and I don’t care anymore; and then Anna Karenina – hurry up and throw yourself in front of the train, I’m done with you, you simpering idiot… So, to say I am reticent about continuing my quest is an understatement.  I shall, however, try more!

Series You Started and Need to Finish: Haven’t read a series in forever.

Three of Your All Time Favorite Books:  This is too difficult a question.

Unapologetic Fanperson For:  Maeve Binchy. Alas, she passed away and there will be no more new stories; however, I’ve not read them all yet so I do have some to look foward to.  Oh, and Jodi Picoult, too, though I am long overdue for one of hers.

Very Excited For This Release (More than all the others):  None, in particular.  I read what I read when I read and am currently on a “no-buy” thing (failing miserably at it, but trying, nevertheless).

Worst Bookish Habit:  Finishing a book I don’t enjoy because, dammit, I started it… well, not true. I did manage to put aside a book for maybe later (which might never come).

X Marks the Spot—start at the top left of your shelf and pick the 27th bookSwimming Lessons, Claire Fuller. (I chose the 2nd book case as the first one has cook books 😉

Your Latest Book PurchaseThe Winding Road: A Journey of Survival, Miriam Hurdle, on a friend’s recommendation.

Zzz-Snatcher Book (the last book that kept you up late)The Silent Patient, Alex Michaelides.

With a Little Help From My Friend – Friday Fictioneers

It’s Wednesday!  Friday Fictioneers is here! And would you looky here… Rochelle is using our little trouble-maker, Omelette, for the prompt.  Sorry she is blurry. It was one of those “quick before she jumps” situations.  Can’t very well diss my own pic now, can I?  How about you click on the frogs below to check out the other 100-word stories, or, how about you add your own link?

Haha!  Cute!  Does she always hide inside the bookshelf?

Yep!  I’ve decided to start using her as a helper.

How so?

Ever watch The Tonight Show when Jimmy Fallon uses cute puppies to choose the Super Bowl winner?

Actually, I have.

Well, my guy uses his cats in the same manner. ‘Course, this year he had a 50/50 chance as they each chose a different team. I thought they should be disqualified but hey, who am I to judge?

So what’s your point?

Sorry, Got carried away. She helps me choose my next book to read!

Hope she changes shelf sometimes…

Walking. With Stanley

They say imitation is the highest form of flattery… However (Stanley’s favourite word), I do so hope you don’t mind, David Kanigan, of Live & Learn, that I have usurped your style for this post. As I was considering writing what shall follow, I kept hearing in my head “Walking… With Stanley” and, well, I decided not to fight it. I’m inspired by you but will still add my own thing by bombarding inserting photos here and there.

I have been convinced into actually using my subscription to Audible by my fellow blogger and friend Janet. You see, she told me about Stanley Tucci’s new book, entitled “Taste: My Life Through Food“. and said she had listened to it, as read by the author himself, and found it wonderful. I said I didn’t listen to books and she said maybe I was like her sister who doesn’t like to be read to. I said I think it was more about my not liking to have continual sound in my ears. I can be up for most of the day, in total silence, before I turn on the TV (when at home). We exchanged back and forth and next thing I knew, I was on Audible, thrilled to find I had one credit and was able to get it for free.

Usually, when I walk, my movie is the view around me and the accompanying sounds of nature serve as soundtrack. I have to admit that when running, I am too busy trying to regulate my breathing and trying to convince myself that I am totally loving it (I’m actually starting to), to notice. I am, however (there it is again), getting a tad bored during my forced every-other-morning walks. (Gah! I cannot wait for this year-long challenge to end!) Anyway, why not try listening to a book? It might make the time go by faster or feel a tad less monotonous. There are only so many times I can be thrilled at the sight of “my” willow.

Okay, so how does it go, D.K.?

3ºC (37.4ºF), 6:44 a.m., Tuesday, November 2nd.

Boucherville, La Seigneurie neighbourhood. Day, I have no idea but day 364 will be on January 2.

Wind is negligible. I have a thick white (to be seen) sweatshirt over two layers of tops, my tuque (not tuk, David) and gloves. I don’t feel the cold at all.

I start my new book. And I walk. Not my usual path. I go right instead of left outside of my house, past Industrial Blvd.. I snap a pic as I’ve decided to take a daily record. It’s still very dark and I see the morning crescent moon. I’m half-tempted to go back and get my real camera but that defeats my walk with purpose. I’m already bad enough taking pics with my phone!

I decide I’m going to go to the second block and turn up de Nogent which will bring me, I am frankly not too sure where, but am not too worried. I’ve got lots of time and it’s not that complicated. I am enjoying listening to Stanley wax on about his youth and his love of food through memories of family meals and can now understand why David ends up buying both the Kindle and the Audible versions as I think, shit! I would’ve highlighted that part. Or, dammit! I want that recipe (coz he gives quite a few of them). Now what? No way in hell I am going to stop and mark the time and the chapter so I can go back to it. Hmm. Not sure now about this whole listening to a book thing. Still on the fence.

However, (yes, Stanley, your editor should have pointed out just how many times you say it), I continue listening and don’t fret as I cannot do much about it for now and before I know it, I find myself in the park that I usually go through first on my runs. I’ve not gotten lost after all. It’s still pretty dark. Already the ubiquitous hockey rink has been set up in preparation for the upcoming season of thwwack of a puck slapping the boards, the Ksssh-ksssh-ksssh of skates cutting into the ice and shouts of laughter.

A chapter ends and I notice the sky is starting to “orange up”.

I look at my watch and see it’s 7:11 and think wow, only half an hour has passed? How fast have I been walking? Or was that loop a helluva lot shorter than I realised? I decide on a whim to make my way over to the overpass and hope the sunrise will be capturable. This is the only place I can even hope to do so. Where David has the best spot EVER to get it and does so spectacularly every morning, I have none. I have lots of options for the sunset, however ( 😉 ) so not all is lost. I make my way up to the top of the overpass and not only is the traffic so loud that I cannot hear Stanley, getting aggravated at the bombarding to my eardrums while I’m at it, the sunrise was totally not worth it and, as if that wasn’t enough, I screwed up and it’s blurry. C’est la vie.

As a result, have decided to only listen to the book when I am walking – far from traffic. Or when I am raking up 12 effing bags of leaves. The noise level was tolerable but not ideal. I have come to realise I prefer quiet streets or parks to do my listening.

And no. I do not want to get noise eliminating ear buds. I want to know if a car is coming and could run me over. And, imagine that, on today’s noon walk? I realised I had forgotten my buds but still could listen to the book through my phone in my pocket. As my guy would say, Win, meet Win! (And a reminder to leave a set at work!)
