Same, But Different – Friday Fictioneers

Good Thursday!  The sun is shining, the wind is blowing; it is a beautiful 29℃ (83℉) and I am contemplating getting out for the last of it.  However, first, I needed to respond to Rochelle’s post with a response of my own.  I don’t usually read other’s posts but Rochelle did mention that I might have a role so, of course I had to check!  Should you be inspired by Lily’s photo, please click on my frog below and add your link.  Easy peasy!  Pour yourself a glass and enjoy!

“Fourteen years, eh Rochelle?  For me… Sarah convinced me to try this challenge way back in March 2015.  Lordy!  It’s been eleven years!”

Dale brought over Rochelle’s topped off glass so they could both wade and sip.  “Yanno, when I saw the picture for this week, I almost accused you of “stealing” one of mine until I realised it was Lily’s.”

“Oh really?  Moi?  I would never try to use one of yours as mine!”

“Ahem… I’ll let that one slide…”

“So, you saying you have a similar picture?”

“Check this out!”

“Are all Adirondack chairs red?”

“Sure seems like it!”

“I don’t speak Alien!  Honey, you have Babbel, d’you know what it’s saying?”

“Uhhhh….”

“Bzzzztttt. Zerbet.  Bonjour.  Que voulez-vous commander?”

I think that’s French?  Honey?”

“Yes, it’s French but I’m not–”

“Bzzzzttt. Zerbet.  Buongiorno, cosa desidera ordinare?”

“Oh for Christ’s sakes… Now it’s speaking Italian.  If it’s so damn good, why can’t it figure out we are English?”

“Darling, be patient.  It’s a new service.  There are some glitches–”

“Glitches my ass.  This is what happens when you replace humans with garbage machines!”

“Bzzzttt. Zerbet.  Be Nice, Sir.”

“Hah!  Gives me shit in English.  That’s rich.”

Savour and Spit – Friday Fictioneers

Good Thursday, my blogging friends.  You can blame Rochelle for this one.  If I hadn’t been chatting with her this morning and been given an idea, I would not have been participating.  While Roger Bultot’s photo is lovely, it just wasn’t speaking to me.  He he he… Thanks, Rochelle!  Join in on the fun by clicking on my frog below and adding your link.  Have a marvellous day wherever you are!

She groaned at the brightness of the lights illuminating her living room and shuffled/stumbled to the window to pull down the shade.  She should have known better.  She did know better and yet…

Wine tours were an interesting and wonderful opportunity to learn about the product they were trying to sell.  They were definitely a fun perk of the job but one had to be most careful. It was easy to get carried away.  And for once she was not the designated driver.  Unfortunately.

Note to self:  Offer to be the designated driver.  And for heaven’s sake, savour and spit!

“Hey Johnny!  Let’s go sit outside.  The sky is on fire tonight!  It’s gorge-ous.”

“How cold is it?”

Moira opened the patio door and stuck her arm out to gauge.  “It’s perfect.  Bring a blanket in case.

Grumbling he has work to, he nevertheless grabbed the blanket.  Moira ignored him, knowing he would follow.

“I don’t know why you can’t just come quietly, John.  Why must you always complain, first?”

“I’m not complain–” Moira’s look stopped him.  “Fine. I do.”

Stepping onto the balcony, Moira sighed her pleasure.  “Do what you will.  I’ll enjoy regardless.”

“Heyyyyyy!”

Moira smirked.

“Coming!”

Waiting – Friday Fictioneers

Good Wednesday, my lovely Readers!  Today is the day we get our prompt for Friday Fictioneers – a challenge, that once upon a time, showed up on Wednesday, to give writers time to think about what to write for our 100-word story; but somehow, over time, the day became the main posting day.  Go figure.  Should you wish to read what others were inspired to write, click on the link below and enjoy.  Why not try your hand at it… To find out how the rules work, click on Jennifer’s photo (thank you, Jennifer) and you’ll hop over to Rochelle’s blog where she gives the how-to!

Rob spent the morning going up and down staircases all over Old Québec.  Nobody.  Where was she?  Did she stand him up?

She, was Harriet, and she waited patiently at the top of a Petit Champlain staircase wondering what was taking Rob so long.  She had told him where she would be.  Did he stand her up?

Rob looked again at Harriet’s message on his phone.  “No train station, just a staircase, two half-addresses, not three-quarters.  Old Québec Petit Champlain.”

Both avid Harry Potter fans, he thought of the 9 3/4 platform.  Was this a clue?

There! 54½ and 71½.  He looked up.

“Hello, Rob!”

Screen door banging behind him, six-year-old Jimmy ran to his room, yelling, “Mommy!  The circus is in town and I am leaving and joining it!”

“That’s nice, dear,” she responded, smiling. “Want me to pack you a lunch?  Need help with your suitcase?”

“Baloney, please.  Where’s the suitcase?”

“Okay.  In the hallway closet.”

“Thank you, Mommy.”

“So you’re all packed and ready to go, Jimmy?  I’ll walk with you, if you like.”

“Yep.  Let’s go.”

“Mommy?  Wait.  You might miss me too much if I leave you.”

“Changed your mind?”

“Can we just visit?”

“Should we invite Daddy?”

“Good idea.”

Never Good Enough – Friday Fictioneers

I want to take a moment to send my condolences to Trent McDonald’s family.  He was a fellow blogger and gone way too soon. RIP, Trent.  I don’t doubt you are running along beaches with any past dogs of yours or playing music or writing your next book.

It’s Wednesday!  Once again, Rochelle has taken me out of hiding to play Friday Fictioneers.  But the timing is great.  I’ve gone one more big ship in port and then I am freeeee!  To play along, click on my frog below and add your link to your 100-word story inspired by… wait, what?  That’s mine!  Oh me, oh my.  So, yes, inspired by my photo.  If you’re not sure how this whole shenanigan thing works, just click on said photo and you’ll zoom over to Rochelle’s for the rules and regs.  G’head, it’s fun.

Why is your painting at the trash, Trish?

Coz I suck, Sue.

You don’t suck.  I rather like it.

It’s not good enough.

Yes it is, you just quit.  Again.

What do you mean?

Well, lemme see.  You started and quit calligraphy, pottery, metal work – though that one was a bit much…

That was crazy.

Point is, you start a bunch of stuff but you just don’t see any of it through.

I’m not good enough.

That’s not true.  All art takes Lots of practice.

I guess.

I know.

Right.

Go get your stuff.  Don’t quit this one.

Yes ma’am!

Porch Stories – Friday Fictioneers

‘Tis Wednesday. my good peeps.  Not only is it smack-dab in the middle but it’s also the opening gates of Friday Fictioneers.  This week our lovely hostess Rochelle, has chosen a photo provided by the very imaginative David Stewart.  Can’t wait to see what he comes up with, using his rather “tame” photo 😉  If you wanna read his and others, too, just click on my frog below and you’ll zip over to the Hollywood Squares where you’ll find a bunch of creative entries… and hey, you could add your own, too!

What a beauty!  I cannot resist a wrap-around porch.

You are such a romantic.

I know.  Oh the stories she must be able to tell.

Why do you assume it’s a she?

Because she is welcoming and invites you in.

That’s sexist.

You betcha.  First kiss.  Golden years, rocking, watching the fireflies.  Young children playing games…

Killer, hiding in the back, waiting for the perfect moment to pounce.

What the hell is wrong with you?

What?  It’s not possible?  Course it is.

You gotta stop watching your horror movies; you’re twisted.

I’ll stop when you stop watching Hallmark.

Shut up.

Stuff and Things for a Sunday, nope! Monday, nope! Holiday Tuesday?

I have been sporadic at best in this blogging biz. It’s that whole trying to find balance thing and I’ve been having a bit of trouble getting it all in, so to speak.  Hell, it’s taken me three days to actually get this going!!

Today is Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day in Québec, so I am off work (yay!).  There was a time when I celebrated this day with friends and family but I guess those days are gone.  Anyway, it’s hotter than Satan’s Armpit out there and I am sans pool (still).  I’ve been waiting for a new liner since May.  Long story, short… if all goes well, I’ll be swimming by June 30.  Doesn’t help on a day like today where the temps are at a lovely 33°C (91°F) with a humidex that makes it feel like 44°C (111°F).  Thank Bob for A/C, is all I can say!

So I am inside, listening to good Québécois music that brings me back to my days in high school.  On this day I am always pulled towards my French Québécoise roots.  Harmonium, Beau Dommage, Plume, Robert Charlebois, Offenbach, Paul Piché and many other wonderful singers from Québec are my soundrack today.  This following piece of music, no lyrics, is just so beautiful and should not disturb you as you keep reading, if you were so inclined.  And I just found out one of the founders of the group, Serge Fiori, died today.  Very à propos dans he die on this holiday, being a voice for a québécois generation, but way too young at 73… 😦

So, anyway…. back to why I’ve been only half-assed blogging and falling way behind on all your wonderful posts… And it’s taking me forever to write this as I get up and dance and sing along to some tunes before coming back to my computer.

I want to read more – books that is – so that means reading less blogs.  Then I feel guilty. Which I know is silly because bloggers are not sitting by their computer waiting for my comment.  Still.  As you know, I like to be a good blogger, meaning I don’t write and run nor do I read and run.  I overwhelm my own damn self in the process.  Ridiculous, I know.

And, I AM reading more.  I am rather pleased with myself thus far.  I have read (and listened) to 19 out of the 30 books I am aiming for.  I’m five books ahead of schedule!  Woot!

Right now, I am delighting/torturing myself reading the most delicious A Thousand Feasts by Nigel Slater.  Not only can the man cook and take beautiful photos (I follow him on Instagram) but his writing skills are wonderful and evocative.  This one I read at lunchtime and/or, when I decide to sit, at home.  I am listening to The Dutch House by Ann Patchett, wonderfully narrated by Tom Hanks (so glad it’s not Ann reading because she can be rather monotone, as I learned with These Precious Days) during my walks, mostly on my lunchtime walks.  On my Kindle, so before bed, I am reading The Boys of Summer by Roger Kahn because B waxed poetic about his writing.  He is not wrong.  Considering I feel pretty neutral about baseball, I am pleasantly surprised with reading about it and about the sports journalism business.  Almost as good as baseball movies, which I bizarrely love.  As well, I have The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien that I am (re)reading with Sammi and friends.  We already read all three Lord of the Rings books and why not?  One chapter per week and then we discuss them.  Fun stuff.

In April, I went with a couple colleagues, to Toronto and then the Muskoka region in Ontario.  We have an extension programme for Viking ships and had to go check out the suppliers and venues (how sad 😉 ).  What a gorgeous area!  Lake Muskoka was still partially frozen in many spots.  I loved our visit with Sainte-Marie-Among-the-Hurons and picked up a puzzle.  Erm… Rog, you don’t DO puzzles!  Well, maybe I should start!  So, yes, this is also how I spend some of my time.  Emptying my mind of all the stuff and piecing the puzzle together.  Just one-fifth left to do.

I planted my garden.  Got me some raised beds – so there Mrs. and son Groundhog!  Course, they ate all my shoots because I had left them on the deck for a day… Anyhoo.  Planted in the four nice tall bins plus some pots on stools only to find that now the squirrels?  I’m guessing… are not too shy either!  Sonova…

What else?  Oh, I have managed to start running/walking again.  Going quite gently and so far so good.  Have to get up stupid early with these temps, though:  5:30 in the a.m.!  I’ve also started a mobility programme and it’s quite different from other exercise programmes I have tried before.  This one really focuses on the joints and a mix of flexibility, strength and overall mobility – hense the name.  I am liking it so far.  Plus, there are no promises of a “flat belly in six weeks”!  It’s an overall wellness programme that I can get down with.  Because I just want to feel like I can keep going well into my eighties!  Plus, whenever I can, I walk during my lunch hour – even went on Monday when it was stupid-hot!  Here’s a few pics of the many, MANY I take 🙂

I have also been baking (every couple of weeks) as well as cooking myself some delicious meals.  I signed up for “Odd Bunch” – they deliver a box once per week and I love the surprise of discovering what’s inside.  These veggies can be odd-sized and rejected by stores for it but honestly, after two deliveries?  I cannot see what’s wrong with any item!

I’ve kept you long enough 🙂  By the end of writing this, the following song came on and I felt a sort of melancholy.  All in all… a decent day.

Translation (by Deepl because I was too lazy to do the whole thing myself!)
