Line(s) of the Day #Conclave

Our faith is a living thing precisely because it walks hand-in-hand with doubt. If there was only certainty and no doubt, there would be no mystery. And therefore no need for faith.

Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) in the religious political thriller Conclave (2024), which tells of the intrigue and suspicion that come to the fore when a new Pope must be elected. Among its successes were eight Academy Award nominations (winning Best Adapted Screenplay) and winning Best Picture at the BAFTAs.

A mix of books from what I’ve read in the last 12 months, including my love of Agatha Christie, sporting (auto)/biographies and short stories. Feel free to suggest which you read first or what you are reading now.

Line(s) of the Day #17GoingUnder

An embryonic love
The first time that it scarred
Embarrass yourself for someone
Crying like a child
And the boy who kicked Tom’s head in
Still bugs me now
That’s the thing, it lingers
And claws you when you’re down

Taken from the song “17 Going Under”, from the album of the same name by English singer-songwriter Sam Fender. The Geordie star has topped the UK charts with each of his first three albums.

Line(s) of the Day #GeneHackman

I suppose I wanted to be an actor from the time I was about 10, maybe even younger than that. Recollections of early movies that I had seen and actors that I admired like James Cagney, Errol Flynn, those kind of romantic action guys. When I saw those actors, I felt I could do that. But I was in New York for about eight years before I had a job. I sold ladies shoes, polished leather furniture, drove a truck. I think that if you have it in you and you want it bad enough, you can do it.

The late, great, Gene Hackman (1930 – 2025) who sadly passed, along with his wife Betsy Arakawa and one of their dogs. In a decorated career that spanned over four decades, he received two Academy Awards, two BAFTAs and four Golden Globe Awards. Choosing his best film or even best role would be tricky. Among his many highlights are performances in Bonnie and Clyde, Unforgiven,The French Connection, Mississippi Burning, The Royal Tenenbaums and Behind Enemy Lines.
