Dragonquest: Volume II of The Dragonriders of Pern

4.7 out of 5 stars (4,805)

FINALIST FOR THE LOCUS AWARD • The second novel in the legendary and magical New York Times bestselling series featuring dragons, adventure, romance, and heroism, from Hugo and Nebula Award–winning author Anne McCaffrey

“Pern was one of the first fantasy worlds I fell into, and I am forever grateful.”—Leigh Bardugo, author of Ninth House

Lessa and her golden queen dragon may have given their world a fighting chance against the deadly Thread by bringing several hundred dragons and their riders forward in time, but this has also caused other problems to arise. The Oldtimers, as they are known, are having a difficult time adjusting to their more modern world, and tensions are rising. Worse, Threadfall is becoming more unpredictable, which makes it harder to combat.

Inspired by Lessa’s example, brown dragonrider F’nor hatches a bold plan to cut through these growing tensions by destroying the Thread at its source: the mysterious Red Star. But his quest to go where no man—or dragon—has gone before will risk not only his life, but the heart of a woman who has already lost far more than she can bear.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Praise for Anne McCaffrey and her Dragonriders of Pern series

“I encountered
Dragonflight at the age of eleven and was immediately charmed. Since then, I’ve read many, many more of Anne McCaffrey’s books, and the feeling of Real Magic has never gone away.”—Diana Gabaldon, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Anne McCaffrey’s Pern books forever changed how readers looked at dragons—not just fearsome beasts to be slain, but bonded warrior partners. She taught a very young me that there was nothing cooler than a dragon you could ride, a dragon that could read your thoughts, that the mastery of a dragon was, basically, the best thing that could happen to you. Combine that with the wonderful world-building of Pern and her unforgettable characters and you get books that shaped a generation and more of fantasy writers. She was a true original.”
—Cassandra Clare, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Anne McCaffrey is one of the titans of this genre, and one of my favorite authors of all time.  If you’re reading this, these books are worth your time. Full stop.”
—Brandon Sanderson, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonriders of Pern series was the formative series for me growing up. My best friend and I would spend hours each day pretending we lived in Pern. The world building opened my eyes to what fantasy could be; the characters introduced me to women in roles of power; and the romances left my young heart aflutter. No series has ever captured my imagination so completely as Pern did.”
—Susan Dennard, New York Times bestselling author of the Witchlands Series

“I grew up reading the Dragonriders of Pern, and they sparked a lifelong love of dragons and dragonriders. Many times as a kid, I would imagine myself on the back of Ramoth, Mnementh, and especially Ruth, soaring through the skies, fighting Thread, and saving the world. Nowadays, the characters are different, as my own dragon stories have been written and published, but echoes of Pern can be found in every one of them.”
—Julie Kagawa, New York Times bestselling author of The Iron Fey

“Pern was the birthplace of fantasy in the hearts of so many readers of my generation, and was the first (and only) fandom I was able to fully share with my mother.  I dreamt of Harper Hall and fire lizards of my own all the way up to high school.  These books were trailblazers, and the land they charted remains as gripping and innovative today as it was upon its discovery.  We owe a lot to Pern.”
—Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author

“Pern is where dragon riding was conceived, and fifty years later, Anne McCaffrey’s epic tale remains a masterpiece of adventure, intrigue, and romance!”
—Danielle L. Jensen, New York Times bestselling author of A Fate Inked in Blood

“Anne McCaffrey's Pern novels are truly foundational books. The seeds of every dragonrider story are here, if not of every take on magical bonding. They carried me away as a young reader, and I hope they'll do so for new readers now.”
—Naomi Novik, author of the Temeraire series

From the Publisher

There are dragons all over Anne McCaffrey's house. Some she's bought, but many have been made for her by adoring fans and given to her as gifts. I don't make dragons, of course. But whenever circumstances allow, I do try to bring her American bacon, something she can't get easily in Ireland, and something which she has taught all her friends there to love, as well! I remember the first time I went to visit her, when she was still living in her old, much smaller but very homey, house. My husband and I arrived at the doorstep, and she immediately began bustling about, frying up some of the bacon we'd brought and sharing a lovely late breakfast with us before sending us off to the hotel for a nap. She made us dinner that night, too--the one and only time in my life that I've actually liked shrimp cocktail. Maybe that's because if you squint your eyes and look sideways, shrimp are kind of dragonlike, and I was eating them in the right company!

What can I say I love Anne McCaffrey and the Dragon Riders of Pern series! Book of the series tells of the serious threat to their planet by a foe everyone thought had been destroyed! It's a gripping tale that will have you wanting MORE! I suggest that you buy the first three books in this series to get the full picture, but don't blame me if you get addicted to reading this wonderful series of books!

I read this book in seventh grade and remembered it just a while ago. I tried to find the copy with the cover I remember from school, but I'm sure it's been long out of print. If the author were still with us, I'd ask for a signed copy, because it's such a wonderful staple of fantasy fiction.

The characters are well-developed, and the plot is unique, especially when I compare it to a lot of today's newer fantasy fiction, the ending leaving off not exactly where one would expect! The language is also much more sophisticated than newer fiction, but not so stuffy that it's hard to get through, a difficult balance to achieve it seems.

The reason I gave it only four stars instead of five is because I wanted more from the characters. I wanted more passion, more tug-of-war with their emotions. Otherwise, it's a very satisfying reading and solid addition to any fantasy-fiction collection.

The ultimate road trip companion—Dragonquest is a masterclass in immersive storytelling

    The Context:

I’ve been making my way through the Dragonriders of Pern series, and I decided to switch over to the audiobooks for Book 2, Dragonquest. Honestly, it was a complete game-changer. I found myself choosing the audiobook over the radio on every single drive, no matter how short the trip was.

    The Performance:

Immersive Experience: There is something about the way these books are narrated that just pulls you right into the world of Pern. The lore is deep, the characters are well-developed, and listening to it while driving makes the time fly by. If you’re tired of the same old rotation on the radio or podcasts, this is the perfect way to spend your time behind the wheel.

Series Depth: One of the best parts about diving into this series is the sheer volume of content available. We’re talking about an entire universe here—the series consists of around 24 novels and two short story collections. Once you get hooked on the first few, you have a massive, rich backlog of adventures to keep you entertained for months (or years) of driving.

The World of Pern: The blend of high-fantasy dragon riding with the sci-fi roots of the planet’s origin is incredibly well-executed. Dragonquest specifically deepens the political and social tensions of the dragonriders, making it an even more engaging listen than the first book.

    Pros:

Perfect for Long Drives: Extremely engaging narration that keeps you focused and entertained.

Incredible Scope: An expansive, 26-book universe that provides endless replayability.

Unique Blend of Genres: A refreshing mix of classic sci-fi and epic fantasy elements.

    Cons:

Highly Addictive: You will definitely find yourself taking the long way home just to finish a chapter.

    The Verdict:

If you’re looking for a new obsession to get you through your commute or long road trips, start with Dragonriders of Pern. Dragonquest is a stellar installment, and the prospect of having 20+ more books to go is an absolute treat for any sci-fi/fantasy fan.

The Dragon Riders of Pern is a great trilogy of young adult books. Sadly our library no longer carries the entire trilogy so I purchased the missing one. (Yes, I know....kindle possibilities...but I find that after working at a computer all day the last thing my eyes need is more screen time. I prefer the physical book.

Vivid scenes, memorable characters. Female characters given as much importance (or more) than the male characters which is not usual. (Ms. McCaffrey being a strong female character herself, readers will find this reflected in the values of her characters). I have read all of the McCaffrey dragon books and have to say that as much as I love them, none of them are as good as the initial trilogy. Please buy this book and pass it on to those who like alternative worlds and rich characters.

I happily find myself transported to the another world. A fantasy world views through the eyes of innocents, as each character is described with 'old world' charm. They occupy a world that contains a benevolent class structure and a enemy that unites them all.

Easy to read and a welcome escape from the cynical. I love all the Pern Books equally, Anne McCaffrey was a gifted writer and has provided me with so much enjoyment. I first found these books as a teenager and now several decades on, I have recently re-read them. The stories have withstood the test of time. Beautiful writing.
