Unfuck Your Brain: Getting Over Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Freak-Outs, and Triggers with science

Our brains are doing our best to help us out, but they can be real assholes sometimes. Sometimes it seems like your own brain is out to get you—melting down in the middle of the grocery store, picking fights with your date, getting you addicted to something, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. You already told your brain firmly that it isn't good to do these things. But your brain has a mind of its own. That's where this book comes in. With humor, patience, and lots of swearing, Dr. Faith shows you the science behind what's going on in your skull and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately to the non-emergencies of everyday life. If you're working to deal with old traumas, or if you just want to have a more measured and chill response to situations you face all the time, this book can help you put the pieces of the puzzle together and get your life and brain back. Here's an excerpt from the book:Knowing what’s going on up in your brain is HUGE. So much of how we interact with the world around us is a completely normal response when we take into account our past experiences and how our brains work. • Freaking the fuck out • Avoiding important shit we need to take care of • Feeling pissed off all the time • Being a dick to people we care about • Putting shit in our bodies that we know isn’t good for us • Doing shit we know is dumb or pointlessNone of these things are fucking helpful. But they all make sense.Your brain has adapted to the circumstances in your life and started doing things to protect you, bless it. It’s not TRYING to fuck you over (even though it totally is, at times). As we navigate the world, nasty shit happens. The brain stores info about the nasty shit to try to avoid it in the future. Sometimes these responses are helpful. Sometimes the responses become a bigger problem than the actual problem was. It’s called a trauma reaction. And even if you aren’t dealing with a specific trauma? Adaptive coping strategies, bad habits, and funky behaviors all wire in similar ways. And research is showing that these issues are actually some of the easier ones to treat in therapy … if we address what’s really going on, rather than just the symptoms.

Review

"As a passionate professor, counselor, and follower of neuroscience research, I strongly recommend Unfuck Your Brain: Using Science to Get Over Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Freak-outs, and Triggers. Dr. Harper's writing style definitely held my attention and made me laugh many times while still informing me about some complicated neuroscience and health related topics. This book is a wonderful change from all the dry, dull, writing I usually read on a daily basis. I encourage everyone dealing with any of these issues or who is interested in becoming updated in the recent neuroscience research to purchase a copy and start reading it today." --Allen Novian, PhD, LMFT, LPC-S, Adjunct Professor at St. Mary's University

I LOVE this book!!! I have read a slew of "self help" books about anxiety, shame, trauma, you name it.. and this is my favorite. Some people complained about the swearing in their reviews but 1) look at the title - of course she swears. 2) I actually really like it. It's funny and makes the book feel more relatable and real-life to me. It has solid facts in it without reading really science-y, so it better holds my attention and helps me retain the information. The author was able to help me understand a lot of things about how my brain works and why it does some of the things that it does. I recommend this book 110% whether you want it for yourself or for better understanding a loved one. It looks like she has another book called Unf#ck Your Intimacy so I'll be reading that one, as well!!! 10/10

I absolutely loved this book! I work in mental health, and recommend it all of the time. I found myself in a low point in life and knew that I had to do something. It took me shuffling it around “for another day” for months, and then a plant fell and the pot shattered, and it knocked this book down. I look at the mess on the floor and through the soil I see the title staring at me. If that wasn’t my sign that it was time, I don’t know what would have been ! I read this book slowly, took notes. Took my time to really process each section. I wish that I knew there was a workbook! I essentially made my own, which was very helpful. But I would recommend buying the workbook! I loved the language used. The author is very intelligent and although she uses a lot of swearing, I felt that it made her more human and relatable. It was easy for me to understand the actual functions of the brain and to picture exactly what she was explaining. I’ve done trauma therapy in the past, but this is what worked for me. I’m FREE! Seriously. I really hope that this book works the same for others. I’m so so grateful.

Pretty good but the author is obliviously a cat owner/person so there are a lot of references to them (being a dog person it's kind of annoying and I couldn't get through the whole book) still it does give some good pointers on how to deal with things in a better way

I'm Torn. Pros: This book covers a very necessary, serious, and stigmatized area of mental health: trauma. It does a good job describing accurately & scientifically what happens to the brain on trauma, the effects and how to deal. More should be explored & written about this subject.

Cons: I have issues with the way it's written. First, the Title Doesn't Really Tell You It's About Trauma. So people looking for that won't find it and people who think this book is about something else will be out a few bucks. It's written with the view that absolutely Everyone has gone through some kind of trauma & could benefit from this book. I won't argue that, I can't know.

The Language is not necessary. There isn't a sentence not peppered with f-bombs and every other curse word. I have NO problem with cursing but this is overkill! It's obvious the book is geared towards young people but if trauma effects all ages why write it like that? It's comically full of urban lingo which almost discredits the intelligent and noble writer. Because it's got a lot of valuable info., I read it, but it's hard. I think even a teenager would roll their eyes at the writer trying to relate to them and sound cool.

By the time a lot of people get around to doing some self help reading they're pushing 30 & up. It would be great if it were scrapped & re-written for everyone.

It also says, "I dont think young people are very smart & won't be interested in reading something unless it sounds 'woke." That's not what I'd want to hear if I were the target audience. In fact there's nothing worse than an adult trying to talk like your generation when they're not.

The other thing it says is, if you're older than the target audience, this book won't be useful to you, which is also untrue. So, kudos to the writer for delving into a serious much needed topic but please get an Editor.

The book is fantastic telling about the brain and how it functions and how we deal with trauma. I wanted another one to give to a friend and see there was only one more available, so I snatched it up. As a natural born potty mouth the language was hilarious. This book is one of a kind and will be in my library forever.

The only book that got me thru it
Reviewed in Canada on June 25, 2020
Brief content visible, double tap to read full content.
Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Dr. Faith's hilarious book feels like you are simply having a coffee chat with your best bff who just so happens to be a "fancy doctor". If you are offended by the swear word then do not buy this book because it's frequent and perfectly placed. You will Laugh Out Loud often so be prepared for that -- too many to quote here from the book.

It is the only book on the topic that truly got me through my brain trauma, depression, anxiety and nervousness I was experiencing for more than 6 months. Talk therapy was okay but wasn't really getting me better. I started holistic healing with massage, reiki, acupuncture etc. and tapping along with clean diet and this book was an absolute God send. I highly recommend this book to anyone reading this review and have suggested it as reading to a few of my staff who are experiencing high anxiety during COVID-19 as an essential worker (current writing) and they are feeling and doing better as a result.

She covers the why you are feeling the way you are and the who, what and now what topics in easy to understand medical and non-medical ways you feel like she's truly in the room with you and you feel better when you are done.

I couldn't read the entire book in one sitting although you could and there's zero indication not to - it's emotion based so I read it parts and happy I did that. Within 3 weeks after reading her book and applying the (easy and fun) exercises to obtain a healthy brain again, I was feeling like me again. I follow her on Instagram and she's full of witty and insightful MD knowledge. I highly rate this book and encourage you to read it too. Be well.

This is a brilliant book. No faffing about, straight to the point and includes some elements of trauma therapy which offers practical help on how to acknowledge, work with and deal with things.

Honestly, depending on where you’re at-this book can possibly trigger you, so it’s important to keep on reading, just bits at a time.

The book has an informal tone, which makes it easy to read and understand- and feels like a witty, down to earth friend is giving you a lot of useful advice- which is great especially if you’re trying to work things out on your own.

Glad I bought this book. 100% recommend to anyone.
