The Golden Age

Night Watch

There i was staring at greatness. The beauty, detail and sheer size of that monstrosity of a painting completely took me by surprise. There I stood in still silent admiration of one of the most defining art pieces of the17th century. Rembrandt wasn’t merely gifted, he was a true artistic genius. A jpeg reproduction does it no justice whatsoever.

The remarkable “Night Watch” bleeds history. Right there during the Dutch golden age, it had made many travels, been through savage wars, survived knife and acid attacks, multiple restoration projects and currently to it’s present resting place right at the Rijksmuseum. This is the one defining masterpiece the Dutch people are said to make a pilgrimage to during their lifetime. And for that moment in time, I was taking my place alongside royalty & rulers, generals & gentry, artists & artisans, typical town folk … Rembrandt himself, looking at this finished masterpiece. There’s a sort of energy that emanates from his works on display at the Rijks. I had the same effect (though in a lesser degree) while viewing Jacob van Ruisdael’s “Windmill” and “View of Harlem”. Inexplicable, but nice.

I found out a rather interesting piece of trivia this morning. For the past 2 weeks, I have actually been staying in the exact location at which it was first placed for display after it was commissioned. The Doelen Hotel (back then known as Kloveniersdoelen) is situated within a stone’s throw of Rembrantplein beside the Amstel (the river from which Amsterdam gets it’s name). This little bit of info brightened me up a bit. It makes the stay a little more ‘artistically’ memorable (if there ever was such a thing).

Leaving this quaint city tomorrow. The most defining moment of the trip: seeing the Rembrandt. The Night Watch seems to have a life of it’s own. Perhaps it’ll see me again someday.

Of Doctrine

19 01 2008

bible.jpgI found his thoughts on agnosticism amongst believers insightful. I quote Frank Holmes from the ‘Treasury of Bible Doctrine‘…

“… In these days when Scripture doctrine is assailed from many sides, it is especially necessary to maintain the truth. Skillful campaigns are being waged against the deity of Christ, the necessity of the blood of Christ for redemption, the eternity of the punishment of the unsaved, and a number of other Bible truths. Experience shows, too, that agnosticism regarding a doctrine is the first step in denying it. The brother who says of a certain truth, “Well, I used to believe that. I’m not sure now. I’ve been reading So-and-so, and he puts a different light on it. I don’t think anybody can be sure on such points” is probably a good half way to heresy. This type of agnosticism is increasing among believers with the increase of higher education. It is the fashionable cant of the intellectual world, the idea being that truth is unattainable anyway, and that orthodoxy is the badge of a low intelligence. But this position cannot be squared with Christianity. For Christian teaching is a dogmatic assertion of truth received by divine revelation. It is “the faith once delivered to the saints”. It was expressed by the apostles, “not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth” 1 Cor 2:13. To be a straw Christian – “carried about with every wind of doctrine” – may be a mark of intellectual sophistication, but it is not a mark of spiritual maturity.

The man who is impatient of doctrine and will listen only to exhortation is acting unreasonably. Right doctrine is the basis of right action. Doctrine provides the divine reasons for or against a line of conduct…. “

I’m reminded once again of the words of the apostle Paul to young Timothy. 1 Timothy 4:12-13 reads “Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.” Indeed we are to place a high importance on the value on doctrine, such that we give a careful application of our mind to it.

How Time Flies

18 01 2008

faded-clock.jpg I was listening back to one of the earliest compositions I wrote in my first year of university. I remember clearly telling myself back then that i desired to write in view of how I wanted to look back on my past, once i reached the future. The one thing I would truly loathe would to be left realizing that they were wasted years. Now, that was around 10 years ago. To be blatantly honest, I’m looking back on some it right now and realize that there has already been a lot of wasted time. Though there has been some progress, i definitely can’t miss the indiscipline and lack of devotion shown for the Lord, my mixed priorities and misguided pursuits. I don’t know how much more time God has granted to me here on this momentary journey called life. Oh Lord, please help me make this life count for you. All the rest of it.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 “And remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, of which thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them”

Fade…
Peering through
the hour glass of time
Life’s a limerick
a poem with a funny rhyme

The honor i strived for
finding no satisfaction
I’m always wanting more

Chorus:

A chase for earthly things
I stumble on the pressure
laid upon my wings
of a life i’d never seen as…
a chasing after the wind

I thought the hands of time
could slowly erase
the swift mistakes of mine
But they could never be erased
by a fading memory of my mind

Chorus

Bridge
(don’t forget your youth will surely fade
as certain, as certain as your days) x2
one day you’ll awake and say
what’s it all about…
what’s it all about.

It Finally Delivers!

14 01 2008

After a call to iZZi to complain about the slow wireless connectivity in my vicinity, I was wondering if it’d be taken seriously. I was getting around 200 kbps while the deal was supposed to be at 1 Mbps. I know 1 Mbps doesn’t sound terribly amazing … but they tell me that the government actually put a cap on their speeds to protect the other GLC’s, apparently they can actually deliver almost 6-8 Mbps. Any guesses who?

Well, it took them a good couple of weeks to sort out the technical issues but here were my connection speed test results done this morning.

izzi speedtest

I can’t help but say how pleased i am right now and that i just might put on hold my earlier thoughts of canceling my subscription if they keep this up. 😉

Brought Out

11 01 2008

Deuteronomy 6:23 “And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.”

The account of the exodus from Egypt and the journey to the promise land has many lessons for us. The children of Israel were brought out from a land filled with idolatry and from the bondage of slavery that the Lord might bring them into the promised land. For Israel, it was an earthly blessing and inheritance. A land flowing with milk & honey and abundant goodness, a land which the Lord swore to their their fathers. But along with that was the call to faith, obedience and a careful observance of all of God’s instruction. They still had to patiently remove the inhabitants of the land and to remain separate from the pagans in the land before they could fully come into the good of it.

We too have been brought out to be brought in as Colossian 1:10-13 tells us.

“..Walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful .. increasing in the knowledge of God … Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.

With all the spiritual blessings that we have come into, we indeed have a high calling as the children of God. He brought us out of spiritual bondage and darkness to bring us into the the dominion of light. Therefore ought we to in patience and endurance and continue to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord. The children of Israel were brought out for a purpose, so were we.
