There i was staring at greatness. The beauty, detail and sheer size of that monstrosity of a painting completely took me by surprise. There I stood in still silent admiration of one of the most defining art pieces of the17th century. Rembrandt wasn’t merely gifted, he was a true artistic genius. A jpeg reproduction does it no justice whatsoever.
The remarkable “Night Watch” bleeds history. Right there during the Dutch golden age, it had made many travels, been through savage wars, survived knife and acid attacks, multiple restoration projects and currently to it’s present resting place right at the Rijksmuseum. This is the one defining masterpiece the Dutch people are said to make a pilgrimage to during their lifetime. And for that moment in time, I was taking my place alongside royalty & rulers, generals & gentry, artists & artisans, typical town folk … Rembrandt himself, looking at this finished masterpiece. There’s a sort of energy that emanates from his works on display at the Rijks. I had the same effect (though in a lesser degree) while viewing Jacob van Ruisdael’s “Windmill” and “View of Harlem”. Inexplicable, but nice.
I found out a rather interesting piece of trivia this morning. For the past 2 weeks, I have actually been staying in the exact location at which it was first placed for display after it was commissioned. The Doelen Hotel (back then known as Kloveniersdoelen) is situated within a stone’s throw of Rembrantplein beside the Amstel (the river from which Amsterdam gets it’s name). This little bit of info brightened me up a bit. It makes the stay a little more ‘artistically’ memorable (if there ever was such a thing).
Leaving this quaint city tomorrow. The most defining moment of the trip: seeing the Rembrandt. The Night Watch seems to have a life of it’s own. Perhaps it’ll see me again someday.
