Baskets Full

25 06 2008

John 6:9 “There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?”

These were the words of Andrew, the disciple as an indication of the utter incredulity of the situation. Before them were a ‘great company’ of people of which (just numbering the men) amounted to 5000, and Jesus just said to them “Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat?”. Philips had quipped “Two hundred pennyworth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little”. In short, they were seemingly short of money, short of resources … short of ideas.

Here was a little boy who had 7 items. 5 barley loaves, of which barley was known to be the poor man’s bread. 2 small fishes, though we can’t be quite certain how small, but it has been said that it was probably the small kind that you’d salt and pickle.  Thus, if they were pooling resources to feed the multitude, there was one thing you could have put down this little boy’s possible contribution to the pool as … absolutely insignificant.

Still we read that after Jesus had everyone comfortably seated on the grass on the mountain ranges …

John 6:11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
John 6:12 When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
John 6:13 Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten.

There were just some things that really stood out for me in this account. It is that when we present whatever little or seemingly insignificant contribution to the Lord, the Lord can use it for His glory and bless us and others in unimaginable degrees. Not only was the little boy filled, but so were many many others. The multiplication factor is confounding, because it ended up with 12 baskets full. John reminds us that the origins were from the 5 loaves. We can only imagine the delight in the boy’s eyes as he saw the miracle performed before him, seeing that Jesus could do so much with so little at His disposal. All that was required was a childlike willingness to give what he had to the Lord. Another wonderful thing we see from the lad was that when he gave it to the Lord, he gave all. And when we give to the Lord, He will see to it that nothing goes to waste.

We’ve got to admit that at times when we give to the Lord sometimes it may seem to us as a sacrifice. But it really should be rightly viewed as an act of sowing. In the NT Paul lays down the principle below.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7 “But this I say, He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully. Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.

The principle is that if we’re stingy on the seeds, the reaping process will reflect the sowing. If we sow bountifully, the reaping will certainly be joyous time. When we’ve done our part sowing, God provides the rain & sunshine for it to grow. Just as in the case of sowing, it may take some time before you see the results but this is a most assuredly a promise that the Lord gives to us. But the blessing will certainly come if we’re investing right, in the things of the Lord. And how God loves to see His people give from their hearts with the right attitude. I like the word ‘cheerful’ as it’s tells us that it’s got to be done with a happy disposition just as the Lord enables and we purpose in our hearts. Take away the ‘cheerful’ from that, and it counts for little in God’s eyes.

In the OT we have a few more thoughts on giving to the Lord.

Malachi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”

Proverbs 3:9-10 “Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.”

Personally, this is a challenge to all of us. We know God will certainly provide for His people. But can we trust God enough that we’d put our money where our mouth is? How is our tithing and do we give Him the firstfruits of all our increase? Can we trust that if we give liberally and from the heart to the Lord that we will not be left in want but we’ll have to be ready for a greater blessings from the Lord to follow? I believe there is no doubt about it. Our God will supply our every need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus (Phil 4:9).

Let us give ourselves to the Lord wholly and holy for His use and then, He can and will most certainly use us if we give of ourselves unreservedly to Him. I don’t think God stands to gain much from this, He is the great Creator who already has everything at His own disposal and His storehouses are never empty. It’s really to our gain when we give and receive the fruit of our joyful obedience.

I think a little lad taught me something today.

Just Some Thoughts …

24 06 2008

As I search the morning paper, I’ve noticed that good news is hard to come by. It’s in scarcity these days. This is where the law of supply and demand doesn’t quite apply, for you can’t merely manufacture good news to meet with it’s demand. So what we have often times is a steady flow of quite the opposite. Even  these days you’ve got to think twice before accepting what people term as good news, simply because it may very well turn out to be otherwise. There’s just  this extra whiff of negativity in the air these days.

My beloved countrymen are growing increasingly discontented and angry with the slightest hint of price hikes, ready to take to the streets when a rally call is sounded, scream on blogs, set up facebook groups, lambaste the powers that be on almost every decision made. You strike up a conversation with a citizen you randomly meet on the road and you’d realize just how everyone seems to have a take on this, almost usually negative. The political situation in my homeland is tremulous and as unstable as ever, descent and revolt is encouraged, even celebrated. Honest Abe’s Gettysburg address of “government of the people, by the people, for the people” seems to be wrenched out and used as a battle cry for defiance.

But really, it’s not quite any different with the rest of the world. This little plot of real estate in South East Asia is merely a small caricature of what is being felt and experienced by the world at large. There is upheaval in the world over just about anything you can name, be it in the political sector, the petroleum problem or very simply amongst the people themselves.

I’ve addressed something similar to this before in an earlier dated blog when the people (including some Christians) were taking to the streets for the hopeful ‘clean up’ (Bersih). Once again, what is the appropriate response for us as believers to the government we’re under (be it in Malaysia, the States, Mozambique, Iraq … etc) ?

I believe it to be clear that we are to be above all beyond reproach and blameless in our dealings with the world. And when it comes to what we are to do regarding the powers that be, it’s put down very practically to 3 simple commands “Obey”, “Pay”, “Pray”. A nice ring to it too (I have brother JB Nicholson to thank for this). Do consider the following …

Titus 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

Romans 13:6-7 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour

1Timothy 2:1-4 “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; (2)  For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. (3) For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; (4)  Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

I once had a friend who was complaining bitterly about having to pay high taxes and that the government was robbing his/her of his/her money that rightly his/hers. I had to gently remind my friend that even Christ said “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s; and unto God the things that are God’s”. If there was totalitarian regime that was not anywhere near democratic, had oppressive rules, set up extreme forms of capital punishment, imposed taxes, used public funds not for the people but for lavish spending amongst themselves … it was in Christ’s day. But just as Christ the Universal ruler and King of Kings condescended and submitted Himself to these little earthly kings, we too ought to follow in His steps and that which was conveyed by the apostles. It’s a case of WWJD. It doesn’t matter even if you’re living under the worst rule, the most draconian of laws, or a law of the land which could have you crucified by an unfair trial with corrupt judges … it shouldn’t change our simple obedience to God’s word.

Let us not fail to heed what Paul exhorted Timothy in the passage above. This world, this country, it’s rulers, need our prayers and it’s time for believers to not follow suit and be counted amongst earth dwellers who may have little to live for but this world. For us, it’s not time to storm the parliament, to ask for repeal or impose the will of the people. It’s time to storm the gates of heaven, it’s time to appeal to a higher authority (the very Highest), it’s time to seek His will and submit to it.

Just some thoughts.

Leaving Rich

18 06 2008

rich

Was listening to this as i drove to work this Wednesday morning. I then recalled that it was in my Roberts Hall hostel room in Melbourne when i first heard “Elijah”. I can still recall how I downloaded it off a (now defunct) mp3 website and played it through my then-very-much-alive Twinhead notebook. This has to be my favourite song penned by the late Rich Mullins (who died in ’97 in a tragic car accident). It speaks of how I would want to leave this place we sometimes call ‘home’. The theology in the lyrics isn’t perfect (give the man some poetic license) but the heartfelt depth and honesty in the words speak volumes. I’ve told some that this is the song i want to be sung or played on the day I’m laid to rest. However, I don’t think a friend singing this would be able to make it past the last chorus without breaking down. I pray that I live in the light of the words “it won’t break my heart to say goodbye”.

The Jordan is waiting for me to cross through
My heart is aging I can tell
So Lord I’m begging for one last favor from You
Here’s my heart take it where You will

This life has shown me how we’re mended and how we’re torn
How it’s okay to be lonely as long as you’re free
Sometimes my ground was stoney
And sometimes covered up with thorns
And only You could make it what it had to be
And now that it’s done

Well, if they dressed me like a pauper
Or if they dined me like a prince
If they lay me with my fathers
Or if my ashes scatter on the wind
I don’t care

But when I leave I want to go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire
And when I look back on the stars
It’ll be like a candlelight in Central Park
And it won’t break my heart to say goodbye

There’s people been friendly, but they’d never be your friend
Sometimes this has bent me to the ground
Now that this is all ending
I want to hear some music once again
‘Cause it’s the finest thing I have ever found

But the Jordan is waiting
Though I ain’t never seen the other side
They say you can’t take in the things you have here
So on the road to salvation
I stick out my thumb and He gives me a ride
And His music is already falling on my ears

There’s people been talking
They say they’re worried about my soul
Well, I’m here to tell you I’ll keep rocking
‘Til I’m sure it’s my time to roll
And when I do

When I leave I want to go out like Elijah
With a whirlwind to fuel my chariot of fire
And when I look back on the stars
Well, it’ll be like a candlelight in Central Park
And it won’t break my heart to say goodbye

The Jordan is waiting
The Jordan is waiting

Bye, bye

* In the spirit of the now defunct mp3 website that introduced me to Rich’s song, i can’t provide you a download of the mp3. However, you’d be able to pick it up from your local Christian bookshop easily i believe.

Divine

10 06 2008

John 2:1-11 reads:

(1) And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:
(2) And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
(3) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.
(4) Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.
(5) His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do [it].
(6) And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.
(7) Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.
(8 ) And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare [it].
(9) When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew; ) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,
(10) And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: [but] thou hast kept the good wine until now.
(11) This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

Amazing! That’s what i thought when I read the account of Jesus’ first miracle in Cana of Galilee in John chapter 2. The eye witness account of the apostle John in retelling the incident was fascinating. The account gave no place for accusations of it being a deliberate set up by a first rate first century conjurer. There are some noteworthy observations (with thoughts from my Emmaus Course material on John). Firstly, it was an unprepared request by His earthly mother, Mary. It was an unforeseen circumstance which threatened to wreck the celebrations. Think of a Chinese wedding dinner where the special drinks have run out and then having to revert to lukewarm water (they had no ice cubes back then). So this was not a manufactured scenario a person would have created, it was only when the situation was brought to their attention that a contingency plan was sought for.

Secondly, the pouring of the water into the 6 pots was not done by his disciples but rather the servants, thus no corroborating was possible. It was done in the plain sight of all the servants present there. To add to that, the disciples had not ever seen their leader perform such any miracles prior to this (only day 3 of following Jesus), and certainly had no part to play in it. It was only later as a result of seeing this miracle that it was said of the disciples .. “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him“(v11)

Thirdly, the water jars were rather large vessels. Each jar would contain 2 to 3 firskins apiece. Approximately, 1 firkin equals 7.5 gallons which translates to around 34 litres. Each jar would have been more around 70-102 litres each. Therefore when Christ asked them to fill up all 6 jars to the very brim, you would be dealing with more than 500 litres of water. If it was merely some additive (taste enhancers) that was placed in each of the 6 pots, there was no place for that, and you can rule it out. Why? Because it was filled right to the brim. For this, imagine just how much cordial concentrate you’d have to put into just 10 litres of plain water to have a sweet taste.

Fourthly, in all in this, Jesus did not handle the pots and the water but it was all being carried out by the servants employed for the wedding. He was merely giving instructions on what to do. I only imagine the look of incredulity the servants must have had when performing the seemingly pointless task.

Fifthly, the wine was brought for the final taste test by the governor of the feast who had no knowledge that it was originally water. It says “only the servants knew”(v.9). Upon sipping the wine for the very first time i believe he may have been tasting the best he’d ever taste for the rest of his earthly life. The best wines in the world require painstaking processes. Right from the cultivation of the vine, to the wine press, preservation and care, plus the considerable time it takes to vintage it in order to arrive at it’s optimum smell, taste and texture. This miracle, was instantaneous.

To turn water (H2O) to ethanol (CH3CH2OH) was and remains an impossible scientific feat which will never be replicated. What makes it more amazing is also the manner in which it was performed. But not only did Jesus totally reorientate the composition of the water … not only was it totally transformed in it’s chemical organic bonding … it was then flavoured into something which in and of itself could never produce. The verdict was that it was good wine, as good as it gets. That to me is how our Lord consistently works experientially in the lives of men and women down the ages who would attest to a great transforming work of the Spirit and giving their life it’s true savor.

It was unmistakable and unedited proof, just as all the other amazing miracles that our Lord Jesus went on to perform later, all this was done to authenticate and serve as visible proof that He was indeed who He claimed to be, the Son of God. It was of His works that He went on to say in John 10:38 “But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works: that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him.” While a person may not at first agree with what Jesus taught, one need only to examine the facts of the case which are truthfully presented in the scriptures to come to a solid conclusion. Many fulfilled prophecies relating to the the manner in which He was to suffer and die were fulfilled not by His trusted disciples but by His very enemies and people who had no knowledge of it.

There are a few other aspects of the story which I have learned which i can’t detail in this article. But i’d probably end with a last observation. Whenever i read of the words of the governor of the feast in which he said ” … thou hast kept the good wine until now. ” I remember the wise words of my aunt when we were getting ourselves ready for our wedding. She said, “With Jesus, the best is yet to come”. I’d say amen to that.

Remind me..

5 06 2008

Oh Lord help remind me …

Though the ground may quake & storm winds blow,

to hide myself in Thee, my Rock of Ages

Oh Lord help remind me …

When men lose their hope in mankind and government,

that one is my master, my gracious Ruler

Oh Lord help remind me …

When everything from pride to price seems to be soaring,

To mount up with wings of eagles and rise above it

Oh Lord help remind me …

When the world can’t look beyond it’s bleak circumstances,

to fix my eyes on Jesus and watch for His return
