Ryan@2

15 04 2009

We didn’t manage to have a big birthday celebration for Ryan, as the closest weekend to the date happened to intersect with the Easter weekend. We were away in Singapore and it was also way too busy a period for any family members to come over for one. So it was the 13th and it was going to be just the 3 of us.

Still, it didn’t dampen our little boy’s excitement to know that he had just turned 2. The number “2” has by far been his favourite number for the past few weeks. It might have something to do with the fact that we live on level 2 (he loves to press the button on the lift) and the number just seems to keep popping out everywhere he turns. Often holding 2 fingers out, he’d happily chirp “twooo” or “du-a” in malay. And there he was, all of two years old and ever so happy sitting patiently looking on as we lit up the candles on a blueberry cupcake bought from the Crown Plaza’s bakery. And as he had been practicing the whole day, right after we had finished singing him the happy birthday tune … Ryan blew his candles out in one puff.

Yay! It's my birthday

So sonny boy, welcome to your terrific two’s. If you ever read this in a couple of years time, just remember that mummy and daddy’s birthday wish for you is that you will come to know that Christ came into the world to save sinners (that includes you and me) and that you’ll one day trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour. That would be by far be the most momentous birthday you’ll ever have. Blessed 2nd birthday to you, wang wang!

Aspiration

12 12 2008

“Travel around the world, listen to the London Symphony Orchestra live, visit Old Trafford, drive a Lambo Countach, speaking fluent Chinese, make a decent amount of money, become a world class photographer … ” are just to name but a few of the dreams and ambitions the author of this post has allowed to pass his mind in the time of his earthly passage. Some achievable, some wishful thinking, some simply ridiculous … but unfortunately for this list it’s … earthly. Though some in and of itself may not be wrong, I’ll be honest to call a spade a spade.

What did the apostle Paul desire most in his life? The dear man got to travel much of the world but it was not for the euphoric earthly experience of a seasoned tourist. His was rooted in the advancement and proclamation of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And instead of stamps on a passport or picking up neat little souveniers, here is what he picked up on his world travels …

2 Corinthians 11:23-27 “… in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. (24) Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. (25)  Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;(26) In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; (27) In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.”

If that was what we’d know we’d be getting in our life, who would be the first to sign up for it. Not the apostle Paul, and he had the stripes and scars to prove it. He was on a single minded mission and no adversary or adversity would stop his zeal for the Lord. He was willing to face all that (and more) because his motivation was set clearly.

Behind every dream and aspiration are our motivations. So, we may ask … “What was the apostle Paul’s motivation?” I believe, one of the most clear statements of this is found in Philippians written while imprisoned :

Phi 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;
Phi 3:11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.
Phi 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.
Phi 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
Phi 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Dear Christian (and i speak to myself), we can have our dreams our little goals… and some may and will be fun to accomplish and fulfill in this life. Our God is not a kill joy. For those who are blessed, some of them may be fulfilled in this one life we have. God does grant our life it’s little treats and sometimes it’s nice surprises. But let us keep our eyes on the true goal and let us not leave out the vital question … “Would I be willing to set my dreams and my pursuits for the pursuit of God’s high calling?” The battle scarred apostle had no place for self ambition, earthly pursuits. His was a wholehearted devotion to his God, so ought ours to be as we imitate him just as he imitated Christ.

Today, I was entitled to my wish as i blew out the candles on my cake. And my wish was simply this, though far from simple in it’s living out, “That i may know Him, and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformable unto his death”.

This, I pray I live by the power and the grace of God … before He blows out my candle.

B1og Year

A Year

*Fooooooosh* (sound of mouse striking a match)

Today commemorates my 1st year in the blogosphere! I’m slightly surprised that this blog is still alive (knowing the initial concerns i raised on my first post exactly a year ago). I’m still here and this page has yet to be decommissioned.

On the occasion of any milestone, it’s always good to look back, trace your steps and make an honest evaluation as to whether there’s been any progress or digress. I’d have to honestly say that there’s been a decent share of both. And if you’ve visited my humble abode on the web somewhere through the last 12 months (at least via on my postings), you’d clearly see that I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs. However whenever I look back, there has never been a doubt that the Lord has been amazingly good and gracious to me. Lots of lessons (documented and undocumented) that the Lord has had to teach me, and I have many a times shown myself to be a slow learner. But of certainty , God has proven that His discipline has been firm yet gentle, His yoke easy, His grace abounding.

As one who tries to do a posting every now and then, there have been things that i have at times really wanted to write about which were heavy on my heart. However, sometimes i felt the timing would not have been suitable or best, and so I didn’t. These were some theological issues that I initially wanted to really take on and discuss openly. I believe there is a place and time for everything, so we’ll still see how that goes … and maybe in due season, I hope to be able to deal with them.

To all my friends and passersby who have visited this my humble WordPress abode amongst the countless others, I hope that it has been a source of blessing to you in some small way. By God’s grace, this little candle of testimony will continue to shine for Him. I’m mainly referring to me, of which AntiochAgent is a small extension of myself and it’s expression. So thank you for coming by to read my typed thoughts. I really enjoy the times when you drop a comment or two and a healthy/light conversation goes ensues. You’ve made the whole blogging experience all the more worthwhile and meaningful.

Acts 11:26 “And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.

One !!

15 04 2008

Our little Ryan had a wonderful time at his first ever birthday party. For the birthday song, everybody couldn’t decide (while singing it) to either call him Ryan or Wang Wang … *chuckle*. We had a great time. It was good to recall and truly thank the Lord for His bountiful blessings and goodness in our lives over the past year. Life certainly has never quite been the same since little Ryan stepped into our world, but it certainly has only been for the better. May the Lord only grant us the grace and wisdom for road ahead.

Just decided to pick a few of photos capturing the happy milestone for our little boy. You’ll have to click on the gallery pictures for the *slightly* larger version. (My favourite expression of Ryan is the final group shot)

Almost 1

12 04 2008

Wow, how time does fly. We’re celebrating Ryan’s 1st Birthday this evening! It’s going to be just a little within-the-family party for a little boy who turns a grand little “1” tomorrow. We’re having the party a day earlier (Saturday night) because folks have to travel back on Sunday. The only person we couldn’t quite invite was dear aunty Mei who we know would have loved to have watched him blow his first candle (oh, we’re probably gonna doing it for him). So here’s to you Mei, we all miss and love you and are cheering and praying you on. You may be in Oxford, but you’re right here with us. Wang Wang will see his lovely aunt soon.
