God Bless …

8 01 2010

With all the news of what’s happening in my nation Malaysia today, I intend to add no fuel to the fire. However, here I offer my brief comments on what we have witnessed this day.

Today, there was a series of premeditated strikes at churches (some successful, others not) aimed at expressing displeasure against certain sections of this country’s Christian community. This certainly has it’s catalyst from the recent High court’s verdict on the usage of the word ‘Allah’ in a Catholic publication and the fact that the case has yet to be resolved.

What we’ve witnessed today marks a sad and dark day in the history of this young country. To my knowledge it is unprecedented, and it unfortunately may serve as a precedent for the future. The mental barrier for committing acts of this nature has been breached, and the unthinkable in this peaceful country (and it still is) has unfortunately been committed. I’ll be honest to say, that I didn’t quite envision that what i saw in Pakistan and the need for police personnel to monitor at the gates of some churches, would be a reality in Malaysia. Now, we won’t quite be able to say that this kind of thing doesn’t happen here . That is a reality we’ll have to live with irrespective of whether this sort of thing ever occurs again.

To put this in perspective, there has been a positive and widespread condemnation from all quarters (government, opposition, religious parties, public and many more) against what has occurred, and this is certainly something noteworthy.

With all that said, I think it’s as opportune a time to be reminded of our Lord’s words when He said in Matthew 5:43-45 “Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. (44) But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; (45) That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. ”

Here we’ve been commanded to do 4 things. Love, bless, do good and pray for those who persecute you. So, let’s always look for the practical ways we can do that while continuing to keep Malaysia in prayer … that the Lord’s name be glorified in the actions of those who are His.

The Tax-e Man

17 04 2009
easy accurate safe

e-Filing makes submission of personal taxes in Malaysia so much easier these days. They’ve taken a few years to improve on the the system and the online forms, but personally I think they’ve come a long way since the first year it was introduced. Back then when I finally attempted the submission electronically, the massive incoming traffic caused the system to go down and I had to rush all the way to the tax office to submit it amongst the throngs of people. Aaah, there is a sort of comfort when you’re with thousands of your other last minute cohorts. Well anyway, on the e-filing front, hopefully they’ve resolved those internet traffic issues by now.

It’s easy in e-Filing as you merely pluck-and-place values into the respective columns, and the electronic form takes it from there and calculates all the rest of the mathematically derived fields automatically. It really does take away the cumbersome working of the physical tax sheet, writing and rewriting in case you missed out on a thing or two. Having to update all the pages with the carried forward values is time consuming. You can save your partially completed tax sheet and get back to it the next day too if you have to go search for those stray book receipts for deductions or something. Now, that’s convenience. Plus you get to print out your draft versions in case you’d like to hand it to an accountant friend to see if you did it right. Once you’ve clicked submit (no turning back after this), you can print out the final copies of all your tax submission and you can still come back to the website to get a reprint of your confirmation page and submitted returns easily. For now, I’m all for it… until (or unless) someone hacks and finds a vulnerability in the system.

But this year,  for the very first time I’ve submitted my tax returns 2 weeks from the deadline. Normally I push and then rush it on the final 2-3 days. Ah, but come 2009 this time Johnny-come-lately, got in early. 🙂

Down Lines

13 03 2009

At present, the reliability of the Rapid LRT train system in the Klang Valley is pretty dismal, with the frequency of trains simply unable to cope with the human traffic during peak hours. This morning it was a case of train choking up somewhere down the train lines, most of the times it’s just the sheer volume that it can’t handle.

However, the scene this morning was a really sight for sore eyes as I saw the civilized folks of PJ consciously queuing up all across the waiting platform in long patient lines. It reminded me of the good ol’ nokia cellphone game “Snake”, unbelievable by Malaysian standards ! … the scenes elsewhere are usually utter chaos as my friend who embarks at Wangsa Maju related to me. Well done PJ folks. (Would have taken a photo of it, but I didn’t want to offend anyone not wanting their faces in the picture)

Anyhow, there seems to be some light at the end of the LRT tunnel, as I was informed by 2 technicians squashed in together with me in the carriage that new cabooses have arrived and are almost ready for launch (apparently still in the testing phase). We’re all hoping the problem of being packed like a herd of cows into moving stables will soon by eleviated. For the meantime, it’s “Snake”.

Public Rally

2 07 2008

With all this talk of a “one million” rally, I’m joining the fray.

Announcement !

Antioch Agent is calling for a rally, to rally in prayer for this little nation in the midst of social and political revolution turmoil. It’s a rally of 1,2 or 3, slightly more modest than the one being called for in Padang Timur this Sunday. But we can have certainty that our voices will be heard because God is in our midst and listens to His people more than the shouts of dissent of a multitude.

Venue: Your local assembly prayer meetings and behind closet and room doors.

Purpose: Let us pray for peace to reign in this country, wisdom for the rulers, common sense to prevail, that pride will not prevail, freedom for the gospel to be sounded and for men to turn to the true Lord.

Believers, let’s uphold this nation in prayer.

A Nation Decides

7 03 2008

Here is my second posting covering the build up to our national elections. It’s all set. Tomorrow, Malaysia decides.

I’ve got friends who’ve stocked up on a month’s supply of groceries anticipating anything that might go wrong. I’m not following in suit. I’m hoping that it’ll all just go along rather smoothly, without commotion and street protest rallies (depending on how the votes tally up).

Things are really hotting up. Here’s how theSun looked like on the final day before the nation takes to the polls. Last ditch campaigning efforts from both camps in an attempt to influence the ballots. Every ad was a full sized page in the free national daily. The 1st one below depicts the solitary opposition party ad (they could only muster up a b&w print) in comparison to the rest from the ruling coalition. I couldn’t help but *chuckle* seeing the ratio.

DAP

BN-startpage BN 1 BN BN3

BN4 BN5 BN6 BN8

BN10 BN11 BN12 BN13 BN9

Let’s just keep this nation and the ruling authorities of this nation in prayer.

Happy voting (or not voting) Malaysia!

Transparency

5 03 2008

Transparent box to be used in elections 08Boy, am i excited that the 12th General Elections is just this weekend. I like the number 12. Probably due to my affinity of being born on the 12th of December (12/12) and the fact that doughnuts are sold by the dozen. I’m planning to make the dash back to Penang to do my duty and then rush back to Klang on the same day for YF and also so that wifey will be able to cast her important vote too. My home state looks to be the most keenly contested state and i simply don’t want to miss out on the fun although I’ve got a real tightly packed weekend. I just love the atmosphere, seeing the streets awash with colourful posters (and the accompanying faces on them), witty slogans, signboards, rousing rallies, and that overused “X”-beside-party-logo design lining the streets all this tells me …. It’s election fever!

However, amidst all the excitement that been building up, there are some things that are still bugging me (and many others as well) about this coming elections. It’s precisely this, “Is the whole thing rigged from the start?” The latest debacle to their long list of high profile blunders is the U-turn on the usage of indelible ink. It only serves to heighten the public suspicions of the credibility of this body. It’s incredible that after going through all the supposed research and deliberations and then agreeing to the idea mooted (by Bersih) that they just call it off citing security issues on the same week the polls are to be held. Astounding! Didn’t they first study all the possible pros and cons of the idea before hand? Why couldn’t they see how the other countries using the system handled those possible security issues? What becomes of that enormous allocation of around 2 million that went into buying it? Now, if the reports are right from MalaysiaKini  [link to report] that 47,000 bottles of India’s Mysore  [link to company’s website] varnish were purchased and then from SPR  [link to details] that approximately 36,000 will be used, what do we make of the access of over 11,000 bottles? Well, at least we still have the new see-through boxes (accompanying picture above) which wasn’t axed.. but one can’t help but wonder how transparent the EC really is. Something fishy is going on, again. It’s a major disappointment.

Lots of things are ‘up’ with in this country at the moment. Mess Ups, Cover Ups , Call Ups, Corr-Up’s ! (a pun) So, what’s up with us? There’s also the obvious oppression of freedom across some areas. Even my used-to-be-favourite “independent” newspaper theSun has suddenly become so pro-a-certain-party is a nauseating fact they might as well turn their red logo wording to blue. They used to be a great public watch dog and spoke up with their dogged and eye opening reporting (but recently taken over by Berjaya’s Vincent Tan). Control all the media and feed the public with propaganda fodder so that all the important issues are placed on page 4. I wonder if anyone else seemed to has realize when was the last time they read a Citizen Nades column? What we lack in Malaysia is transparency, but it just doesn’t seem to be happening. So, sadly the only thing I can enjoy about the daily these days are the McDonald’s breakfast coupons that occasionally come with it and their still excellent English Premiere League coverage.

Another thing that has been on my mind is the ruling coalition’s manifesto this year of “security. peace. prosperity”. Honestly, none of the 3 conclusively represent the one thing the I’d really love to see in this country. Security and peace virtually relate to almost the same thing and we all know that Malaysia has for the last few decades been relatively undisturbed (though slightly changed as of late, street protests and all). But the one that takes the cake for me was ‘prosperity’. We all know there’s an unbalanced wealth distribution that’s going to be hard to change here. [On that note, i believe we should credit our ruling prime minister Abdullah Badawi for his efforts to eliminate poverty in the rural areas. I personally think it’s a genuine attempt on the part of the man.] But with the policies that are set in place and which seem to have no end in sight ( eg. meritocracy, cronyism, N.E.P and AP’s) , is it a coincidence that none of the 3 points have anything that remotely relates to the rights of the people, freedom of religion and transparency? Sadly, I actually don’t think it does, and i believe they worded it very very carefully. So don’t expect too much when they are swept back into power that anything will really change. What they needed was a simple manifesto that would convince the public of their vote. A single word sums it up for me. “Equality”. I think that’s what is sadly missing here.

I love my country and I want to see it prosper and grow. I’m going to pray that the Lord will grant that the people voted into power will do the right thing and that this country will continue to be a safe place for us all. I’ll also perform my duty to get to the polling stations because that’s the voice and right I’m entitled to.

But now back to the fact that it’s the 12th General Election in our little country. I’m just sincerely hoping that it’s not going to be a Dirty Dozen.
