The Happy Locker

12 03 2010

Ooh, it’s been a long time since i last wrote. To the many who still make a little visit every now and then .. thanks for dropping by.

During the times that i’m further away from home, i’m always glad that i have a little storage of photographs and videos accompanying me on my journeys. Makes me pause and thank the Lord that I have family praying and cheering me across the miles. Here are 2 from the image bank that i particularly like. These were taken over a weekend holiday with the family in Perak recently.

Taken at Kellie’s Castle and here my lil’ boy displays his unique liking for playing with shirt tags.

Ryan@2

15 04 2009

We didn’t manage to have a big birthday celebration for Ryan, as the closest weekend to the date happened to intersect with the Easter weekend. We were away in Singapore and it was also way too busy a period for any family members to come over for one. So it was the 13th and it was going to be just the 3 of us.

Still, it didn’t dampen our little boy’s excitement to know that he had just turned 2. The number “2” has by far been his favourite number for the past few weeks. It might have something to do with the fact that we live on level 2 (he loves to press the button on the lift) and the number just seems to keep popping out everywhere he turns. Often holding 2 fingers out, he’d happily chirp “twooo” or “du-a” in malay. And there he was, all of two years old and ever so happy sitting patiently looking on as we lit up the candles on a blueberry cupcake bought from the Crown Plaza’s bakery. And as he had been practicing the whole day, right after we had finished singing him the happy birthday tune … Ryan blew his candles out in one puff.

Yay! It's my birthday

So sonny boy, welcome to your terrific two’s. If you ever read this in a couple of years time, just remember that mummy and daddy’s birthday wish for you is that you will come to know that Christ came into the world to save sinners (that includes you and me) and that you’ll one day trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour. That would be by far be the most momentous birthday you’ll ever have. Blessed 2nd birthday to you, wang wang!

CNY ’09 Roundup

sparklers

Had a lovely Chinese New Year celebration. Ryan got to meet his great grandparents who were delighted to see him in all his kiddish exuberance. First it was to Setiawan and it proved to be a very excellent reunion dinner with the best seafood the little town could offer. The only slight downer was the mild food poisoning i caught on the very same day from eating exposed baked beans (i’m guessing) at the budget hotel we lodged at, which basically restricted my 8 course dinner to warm chinese tea and charcoal tablets. I told the rest, “Don’t pity me, I’m not the least interested in eating any of the stuff”. Overall it was a good time of seeing the Setiawan folks in good long while.

Apart from Setiawan, there was the trip to Sungai Petani, which was eventful to say the least as we had a little incident with Ryan. The father (namely, me) accidentally propped up his son wrongly. Oh boy, our little fella was in a great deal of pain whenever we moved his right arm (he held his wrist and sobbed) really breaking our heart to see him in that state. We immediate sought Uncle Choong’s help to recommend an orthopaedic specialist and decided to make a dash for Pantai Medical Centre. Once we reached Bayan Baru, Uncle Choong hopped on board, and him knowing the establishment so well, helped us get to the exact entrance and perform the necessary just in time before the 5pm cut off time. Any later, and we’d be paying twice the charges for after hours emergency room treatment. To cut the long story short, here we were in the room in the midst of the doctor’s third attempt at diagnosing the problem. That was even after a semi-successful x-ray, and Ryan was still wincing. It was then that a fortuitous point arrived that while the poor doc was trying to cajole Ryan to check whether the pain was still there, that the lil’ guy swung his hand away to avoid the doctor. A loud series of ‘cr-u-ucks’ were heard, and it was then that we kinda felt that things had set back nicely. He seemed alright after that. We later had a lovely time with the Choong’s at their home after the incident seeing Ryan running around and happy good as new. Thank the Lord for answered prayer, everyone at home was praying too.

For the most part of the CNY hols, it was filled with a great time with the family, all of us having a real blast. Dad even managed to buy a legal stash of pop-pops, sparklers and fireworks. My D70 gave up on me that night by corrupting almost 90% of the files onboard the CF card (thankfully i backed up the earlier pics a day before). Ever seen 500KB jpeg files that suddenly register as 138MB? Or .JPG’s turned .XPG files? Or unreadable files and folders with %, > and ? symbols. Not pretty. Anyhow, the picture above was salvaged from the wreckage, i still had to crop the file because the bottom third of the pic was some crazy patch of red that arose from the corruption. But i think it’s a lovely pic of Ryan’s first sparkler.

Overall, it was the best ‘back to hometown’ holiday we’ve had to date. It was our longest by far, 7 days … owing to the beautifully timed Federal Territory day’s convergence with the CNY period. We certainly continually thank the Lord for His goodness, His care and protection, His graciousness in providing us a loving family we can come home to.

Ryan’s Feathered Friends

26 11 2008

Ryan’s about a year and 7 months now, and over the past few months he has developed a cute fascination for birds. He wakes up in the morning wishing to go to the balcony to see birds by saying “bhud bhud”. He then enthusiastically points them out to you whenever he sees one. And so over the weekend, on one of those rare free Saturdays, we naturally decided to bring him to see his favourite feathered fellows up close. It was a delightful little family outing we had with the little guy really really enjoying himself.

Pause

23 10 2008

Boy, does time really just zip by. The little baby I used to rock to sleep in my arms has turned into a toddler with the transition taking place all too quickly. Most young parents will tell you how they miss the tiny-ness of their kids and I am no exception. When he wants to let loose, he wiggles out of my arms much more easily than he used to. It takes so much more to keep up with him these days as he is so mobile and absolutely bursting with ‘toddler power’. So for those who wonder how he’s doing up, this is a little photo of the month. This was taken around 2 weeks back.

Escapade ’08

3 09 2008

Last weekend we suited up for our first family overseas trip. A rather hastily planned getaway to Hong Kong, due to the fact that we could only decide on the dates after my busy project schedule had eased off a little. And boy, were we certainly looking forward to this one as this would be the first time for the 3 of us.

Although it was pretty hot and humid for most part of the days we were there, the Lord blessed us with very good weather conditions. Not a drop of rain during our time there even though many weather forecast in the build up to our trip stated otherwise. The typhoon headed straight for HK steered a different course and didn’t hit the island. So it turned out that the only drops of water i felt, were from the dripping air conditioning units in the apartments above the busy streets. Nothing I couldn’t handle.

Interestingly, my eldest brother together with his family (and extended family) chose to make the trip to Hong Kong on virtually the same date as us. We didn’t know about each other’s plans till a week before our trip, and I believe it was the Lord’s timing that we arrived at the HK airport at virtually the same time though on separate flights. Now, that made our first day especially memorable as we went out for dinner together and then made a dash to the Avenue of Stars for the night lights showcase.

The second day was basically a trip to Ocean Park to see dolphins, seals, pandas (one of my highlights!) and other site attractions. The place was so packed with people, it was like we were at the Beijing Olympics. Add to that the heat of the of sunny day at 34 to 36 celcius, I made for some rather uncomfortable moments at times. With ground rules at the park not allowing the bringing in of food and drinks, we had to rely on bottled drinks sold at the park at prices up to HK$16 ( approx RM 8 ) per bottle of 600ml water! Nuff to say, that the park probably made quite a bit from thirsty folk over the weekend. In the end we managed to see and enjoy the place for ourselves, counting our blessings because there was no rainfall. We’d take sun to rain anyday in HK.

We did a lot of walking and taking the MTR to get about. The train and bus system is so well integrated, it’s got to be given top marks for speed and accessibility. Maps we picked up at the airport were instructive, signages were useful and accurate to guide us to the intended exit points, staff at booths were friendly and courteous … all in all it was a very nice experience. The only slight inconvenience was the need to negotiate a pram up and down stairways as these were subway systems. Other than that, it was all very positive. Oh, and a quick tip for those visiting HK with kids in tow: prams are absolutely necessary for sight seeing and shopping activities, they carry the kid and the shopping. Invaluable! 😉

Contrary to my previous perception, the people in HK are actually friendly. Some have said that the atmosphere changed dramatically after the SARS virus hit the island a couple of years back and tourism took a major dive and businesses suffered. It seems this event humbled them a great deal. So in year 2008, unlike the impolite waiters i experienced in some HK eateries in Melbourne years ago, the ones I encountered were well mannered and pleasant. I must also add that so were the taxi drivers who never turn down a customer and always turn on the cab meter. Good stuff. Overall, we had a great impression of the place and had a memorable holiday.

To make the our Merdeka weekend getaway even more memorable, it also marked our 5th year of married life, this trip coming just at the right time to coincide with it. Time really does fly and the years just zip by. And as i think about it, how wonderful to think how God had brought us this far after all these years. We trully marvel at the Lord’s providence and goodness and pray that we only continue to trust and walk close to Him for the road that lies ahead for us.

So with all that said, I think it’s safe to say it was a pretty good trip.

Note Worthy

18 08 2008

Our little boy gets real fascinated with the piano (actually, the clavinova) in the hall. When I’m playing, he’d keep asking me to get him up on the seat so he could have a go too. Once on the piano chair, my sessions end there, where my boy takes center stage and he happily fiddles with all the buttons and hammers away. He kinda liked the all-too-obvious red button (which incidentally is the record function), and so he even initiated his very own first studio take without his knowledge. At this point of time, the little guy is way too young to appreciate the instrument … but in due time we hope he’ll find the interest to play it. For now it’s still more like playing ‘with’ it. It’s really a whole lot of discordant intrusive noise, but that’s what makes it such great fun. We laughed together when i applauded and told him “That’s the best sounding C# I’ve heard in a long while, Ryan”. I’m holding out that one day wifey might be able to teach him the piano, since she’s already failed to teach this old dog new tricks.

Here are some pics we took a couple of days ago.

Up Memory Lane

Happy Family in HCCOver the weekend, the happy trio took a drive up to Highland Christian Centre in Cameron Highlands where the Klang youth group set up camp. We set off for Camerons from KL really late due to an earlier engagement, and so by the time we were snaking up to Tanah Rata, it was in the complete cover of darkness. Ryan was asleep for most of the journey up and only woke up when we momentarily winded down the window (only for a noisy bike to suddenly pass by). It was just about an hour before midnight when we finally reached our destination. The little township at the top of the mountains was such a refreshing sight and it was just so good to see it again (my first time in 11 years). We easily found the turning into our place of lodging for the night and then started to make our way up another small narrow winding road to the center. It was the cool of the air, the familiar sight of a beaten path, the sound of crunching loose stones beneath us that really transported us back to our RBS days almost 11 years ago. The only difference back then was that we had to walk up and not drive up.

This was the site we met so many years ago over a cup of milo, amongst a backdrop of other teens put in the same awkward first meet up scenario (the cold weather back then adding to the shivers). Years ago, we were just a bunch of fresh, fired up form five leavers not knowing what lay ahead for us. Fast forward a couple of years down the road, and we see how the Lord has wonderfully worked in ways with the paths we tread. And here we were again … having left HCC years ago as mere acquaintances but returned this time round together married and now with an additional bubbly baby. Sometimes, it’s just amazing to recollect God’s faithfulness and goodness to His people every step of the way and how some places just remind us of that reality.

Our Little Fella Walks

14 05 2008

Last weekend wifey and I were so elated when Ryan took us by surprise and walked for the first time. This was taken last night as I managed to coax the little guy to attempt to walk, documenting it using my cellphone. He just hit 13 months yesterday, and I’ve also been hearing of his other little friends around his age (Jian Kai and Titus) also at this stage of development. This is indeed a joyous time and also the dawn of new troubles for us parents as they are going to be so much more mobile than ever.

So here’s the little youtube video. And if you do watch it, you’re going to have to put up with my baby talk (you have been forewarned!)

FYI, “nee-ner” is just another endearment we cooked up where the etymology is based on the word ‘honey’. Go figure 😉 He outgrew one of his earlier ones where we lovingly called him “Reggie”. That particular one was when he had the cute (and sometimes not so cute) habit of throwing up his milk. Any guesses for the etymology on that one? *chuckle*
