Let’s work together to reduce e-waste! 🌍📱 The scale of the challenge is growing rapidly. Global e-waste generation has increased by 82% since 2010, rising from 34 million tonnes to 62 million tonnes in just twelve years. By 2030, it is projected to reach 82 million tonnes.* Addressing this challenge requires shared responsibility across the system: 🧩 Producers: designing products that are repairable, durable and upgradeable 🧩 Policymakers: strengthening enforcement of shipment rules and supporting repair frameworks 🧩 Retailers: enabling take-back, resale and reuse models 🧩 Consumers: choosing longer product lifetimes Europe already has strong legislation in place, including the Waste Framework Directive, the WEEE Directive built on Extended Producer Responsibility, and the updated EU Waste Shipment Regulation (EU) 2024/1157. But enforcement gaps remain. ⚠️ Significant volumes of e-waste never enter formal collection systems. At the same time, distinguishing genuine second-hand products from disguised waste is still difficult in practice. From today on, laptops are the final step joining in on the EU’s Common Charger Rule. And that matters more than you might think.🔌 For years, every new device meant a new cable, a new charger, and another piece of tech that quickly turned into waste. Now, USB-C is becoming the standard across most portable devices. What does that mean for the environment? ♻️ Less duplication. Less unnecessary production. E-waste is growing fast. And so is our responsibility. ♻️ In early 2024, we partnered with Minimise to tackle one of the fastest-growing waste streams globally: electronic waste. Since then, our work has evolved – from collecting phones only to significantly increasing our impact with the collection and formal recycling of different types of e-waste. Why this matters 👇 Too much e-waste still ends up in unsafe, informal recycling systems, causing serious environmental and health risks. That’s why part of our impact investments focuses on safe e-waste collection and recycling in the Global South. With our partnership we want to change the system by connecting informal collection with formal recycling thus improving safety, transparency, and local livelihoods. Our impact so far: 📊 2024: 50,000 phones collected and recycled in Ghana 📊 2025: Mixed e-waste projects with 15,000 kg collected and recycled in Mexico and Zambia 📊 2026 (planned): 20,000 kg of e-waste in Ghana Extending a device’s life will always be our biggest lever. But what about the impact on your wallet? 💰 Together with Fraunhofer Austria, we analyzed how purchase, usage, and disposal shape the true cost of a smartphone. The key insight: It is not just what you buy. It is how long and how well you use it. Over six years, the difference is significant: - Circular usage with refurbishment and reuse costs you around ~160€ per year - Average European usage with idle time in drawers increases this to ~215€ - Linear consumption with frequent replacement of devices jumps to ~639€ That means that 💸 you can reduce your smartphone costs by up to 76% 🌍 you can cut CO₂ emissions by up to 8x 🔋 you can use up to 9x fewer critical raw materials All by keeping products in circulation.
