🎉 Congratulations to Dr Josie McCarthy on her second publication in Stroke! 🎉 We’re delighted to share this important new paper led by Dr Josie McCarthy, a final-year PhD student at Hudson Institute of Medical Research and Monash University, who I have the pleasure of co-supervising with Prof Thanh Phan. 🧠🩺 Why this study matters: Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most common endocrine cause of hypertension and is associated with a significantly increased risk of stroke. Yet it remains profoundly underdiagnosed, even in high-risk populations. In this multicentre study of 400 patients admitted with stroke or TIA across two major Victorian hospitals: 30% had a clear clinical indication for PA testing Only 2% were actually tested This represents a major missed opportunity to identify a highly treatable and modifiable cardiovascular risk factor in patients at risk of recurrent cerebrovascular events. 🔍 The findings underpin Josie's current research which evaluates the impact of routine PA testing in stroke care pathways, with the potential to improve long-term outcomes through the timely detection and treatment of PA. 👏 A huge congratulations to Josie on this outstanding work and publication in a leading journal - an impressive achievement and a testament to her growing impact at the intersection of stroke, hypertension, and endocrine research. We’re hiring | Bioinformatician / Computational Scientist (Immunopeptidomics & Multi-omics) I am recruiting a highly skilled bioinformatician / computational scientist to join my team and contribute to the development of a new analytical framework in immunopeptidomics. The role involves integrative analysis across immunopeptidomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and genomics, working with complex, high-dimensional datasets generated from both experimental systems and clinical samples. This is a concept-driven position, suited to someone who enjoys open-ended analytical problems and is motivated to take intellectual ownership and demonstrate scientific leadership. Introduction to RNAte's Quality Specialist - Tony Cardno At RNAte, quality and adhering rigorously to compliance standards are of utmost importance. 18 months ago, we employed a Quality Specialist to build and implement a Quality Management System in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 Testing and Quality and Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP) standards. Tony comes with a wide range of scientific and business experience, first working in drug discovery at Pfizer in England, then leading his own High Throughput Screening campaign against an HIV mRNA target at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research | WEHI. He then automated and ran various high throughput G Protein-Coupled Receptor (GPCR) targeted screening assays at the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences | MIPS, contributing to R&D at CSL Behring Plasma Product Development, and adapting clients' molecular assays to microfluidics at Schott MiniFab. Tony also complements his scientific expertise with time spent working in financial services roles in Sydney and Melbourne, latterly working to understand and optimise business processes. Tony's unique combination of rigorous scientific expertise and business acumen has been instrumental in establishing RNAte's quality framework, ensuring we deliver reliable results to our clients.
