Odonata’s vision is to create a future where Australia’s once-threatened species are thriving across landscapes again.

About us

Odonata Foundation (pronounced o·dah·na·tah) is a leading Australian environmental conservation charity dedicated to saving species and rejuvenating ecosystems. With a focus on working with landholders to establish sanctuaries and wildlife corridors, creating innovative for-purpose businesses, and fostering community engagement and First Nations partnerships, Odonata works tirelessly to conserve biodiversity and create a more harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Odonata’s achievements include being foundational to the downlisting of the eastern barred bandicoot from extinct in the wild to endangered, leading the most successful semi-wild breeding program of the southern brush-tailed rock-wallaby, and undertaking habitat restoration and climate mitigation projects.

  • At Odonata, our mission is to save threatened species. We can't do it alone. That's why we work with farmers and landholders to restore their lands and create habitats for threatened species through the Odonata Academy. Our flagship course, Saving species: for landholders and farmers, equips landholders and farmers with the knowledge and skills to support threatened species recovery and promote healthy ecosystems on their properties. Fancy joining a crew of likeminded landholders on one of our future Academy cohorts? Sign up to a free information session on Thursday 29 October, 10am to hear from our friendly (and knowledgeable) team. 📍 Sign up here: https://shorturl.at/MRoVS 📚️ Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gDZ267nG #odonatafoundation #wesavespecies #odonataacademy

  • Is there anything more spectacular than learning about the benefit one species brings to another? Saving our native wildlife goes so much deeper than the animals alone, the flow-on effects to support improved biodiversity and landscape health are infinite. Here is one beautiful example...

  • Two days until EOFY... wasn't it January last week? We've pulled together a snappy 20-second recap of some of what we've achieved this financial year. If you'd like to help us save Australia's threatened species, we'd be incredibly grateful for a tax-deductible donation before June 30. We've made it easy via the link in the comments. Thank you. Please also enjoy this snapshot of what we've achieved together this financial year: 🐾 Largest-ever eastern barred bandicoot translocation – 100 bandicoots moved to Phillip Island. 🌱 206.7 hectares declared rabbit-free at Mt Rothwell Safe Haven, an increase of 37.5 hectares, allowing native grasslands to recover. 🦘 27 southern brush-tailed rock-wallabies translocated from Mt Rothwell to Barbaloot and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve, helping establish two new colonies. 👶 A new wallaby colony breeding successfully at Barbaloot Conservation Reserve. Bring on the joeys! 🧬 200+ genetic samples collected to strengthen future species recovery. 👥 2,400+ people visited Mt Rothwell Safe Haven to experience threatened species recovery firsthand. 💚 1,100+ volunteer shifts contributed to conservation. 🎓 Odonata Academy launched successfully, with 2027 intakes already being added. 🌏 Global media coverage reaching millions, including BBC, Euronews, New York Post, Mirror UK, 7News and 9News. 📱 485,000+ social media views, introducing threatened species recovery to new audiences. Thank you for being part of the journey. Whether you've donated, volunteered, partnered with us or simply shared our stories, you've helped make these achievements possible.

  • A glimpse into what is possible when farming and ecosystem restoration are designed to work together. Tiverton Farm is a 1,000-hectare regenerative agriculture and conservation project in western Victoria, managed in partnership with the Odonata Foundation. The property operates as a working sheep farm with over 5,000 merino sheep, while also functioning as a protected safe haven for threatened native wildlife. A defining feature of Tiverton Farm is its predator-proof fence, which, excluding foxes and feral cats, creates a safe, controlled environment for the reintroduction and breeding of endangered species such as the eastern barred bandicoot and eastern quoll. The presence of these species also contributes back to the farming system. As natural “ecosystem engineers”, bandicoots improve soil structure through digging and foraging behaviours, supporting nutrient cycling and pasture health, while quolls, as native carnivores, help restore ecological balance by regulating populations of smaller animals and insects. In turn, this supports productive grazing land, healthier sheep, and lambs protected from fox predation, with wool that can achieve a premium market value. Below, Tiverton Farm founder Nigel Sharp speaks with ABC Landline about how the property demonstrates that conservation and profitable farming can genuinely coexist. https://lnkd.in/g9Nvmjs7.
