Microsoft has announced plans to invest an additional $5 billion in Australia over the next two years to expand hyperscale cloud computing capacity, along with an expanded collaboration with the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) to boost domestic protection from cyber threats. The bulk of the $5 billion will be spent over two years to expand Microsoft's hyperscale cloud computing and AI infrastructure in Australia which will see 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟮𝟬 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟵 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮, 𝗦𝘆𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘆, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗯𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲. This will raise Microsoft's computing capacity in Australia by 250%, enabling the country to meet the growing demand for cloud computing, which is expected to double from 2022 to 2026 as AI becomes more prevalent. A recent report co-authored by Microsoft suggests that generative AI, could contribute up to A$115 billion per year to Australia’s economy by 2030 if adopted rapidly. It is a significant move by the company to commandeer two of the biggest and most lucrative global technology bandwagons: #cloudcomputing and #artificialintelligence. It also shows how important the Australian market is to Microsoft as it jostles with Amazon for global supremacy. More data centres on the ground in Australia give Microsoft more capacity to sell, and secure, a reliable home to offer services across the region. Globally, Microsoft is way behind AWS in the cloud computing race, but in Australia it is much closer to parity, according to the world’s biggest tech research firm, Gartner. In addition to the $5 billion investment, Microsoft also plans to work with TAFE NSW to establish a Microsoft Datacentre Academy and this, coupled with the new Data Centres and investment, 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝟯𝟬𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆. The expansion of the cyber threat information-sharing agreement with the country's cyber security agency, the Australian Signals Directorate will help improve Australia's defences against cyber threats. The overall investment was confirmed by the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on the opening day of his state visit to the United States during an event at the Australian embassy in Washington where he was accompanied by Microsoft’s vice-chair and president, Brad Smith, and Microsoft Australia and New Zealand Managing director Steven Worrall. This is a fantastic opportunity for Australia to embrace the future and prepare for the digital and AI-driven economy. Extending your lens to sovereign AI: local, on-prem LLMs flip the script from centralized cloud dominance to true autonomy, agency and sovereign AI, currently I am using Anywhere LLM on my 5 year old Samsung as my personal AI. In The book The Last Economy it encourages people to download the models from ii.inc this exemplifies perfectly building fully open-source, sovereign intelligence with agents like II-Agent, specialized models (e.g., II-Medical), and decentralized systems that run under user control, no data leakage, no external gatekeepers or massive tech companies involved.
Federated local LLMs connecting externally via API’s or MCP, avoiding defection and building resilient networks for organisations or communities, with built in ethics and values. Local sovereignty AI is perfect for data privacy and independence.

What they needed was to understand two modes of working with Copilot. Chat and Cowork. Completely different things. Chat is what most people are using. You ask, it answers, you do something with the answer. Useful, but you're still doing the work. Cowork is another beast. You give it a task and walk away. It does its thing while you're somewhere else. You come back and the work's done. Not a draft. The actual artefact. That's the shift. You stop asking Copilot for things and you start allocating work to it. I'll get the pushback. "Chat works fine for me." Sure. Keep using it for the chat stuff. But if you've never asked Copilot to do an actual piece of work while you're somewhere else, tackling another task, or even taking a call, you're missing out on some huge gains. Five posts this week. We ran a full house SunDAO Ventures investor speed dating session at Cannes, France, met founders and investors across the globe, and I also took some time to hike in the Alps for a bit of quiet and reflection. Having built my career across tech and investing, I’ve spent a lot of time around smart people, people who follow the market closely, understand the language of startups and venture, and can hold thoughtful conversations about where the space is heading. What I’ve come to appreciate over time is that there’s another layer you only see when you get closer to the work: real founder conversations, real investor questions, and real capital allocation decisions. Looking back, the moments that actually moved my career forward weren’t when I was learning more on my own. It was when I got closer to the work, sitting in conversations I didn’t fully understand yet, watching how experienced people evaluated opportunities, and slowly developing that judgment through exposure. Celebrating 35 years of Kids Helpline is such a meaningful milestone. The impact yourtown continues to have in supporting Australia’s youth, their families, and their friends is truly remarkable. A special acknowledgement to Tracy Adams — a tremendous reflection of your values, passion, and commitment. Your 36+ years with yourtown is an incredible achievement and speaks volumes about the purpose behind this organisation. Reaching the milestone of 9 million calls is both humbling and powerful — with approximately 30% of those calls coming from New South Wales alone. It was a privilege to attend today’s event and represent Insight as the Microsoft Solutions partner supporting the re-development of Kids Helpline over the past 2+ years. To round out the afternoon, we heard heartfelt remarks from The Hon. Rose Jackson (Minister for Mental Health) and Premier Chris Minns, both reinforcing the vital, life-changing role yourtown plays in supporting young Australians.
