CROSS RIVER STUDENTS IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS SHOULD URGENTLY APPLY FOR THE ONGOING FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STUDENTS LOAN

July 27, 2024

In view of the ongoing Federal Government Students Loan (NELFUND); All the Cross River State Students in Tertiary Institutions should take advantage and avail themselves with this opportunity created by the Federal Government, through the establishment of Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), and apply for the ongoing students loan.

I have contacted the authorities of NELFUND, University of Cross River, and others and I have been informed on good authority that the data of UNICROSS have been uploaded, hence all the UNICROSS students as well as the students of all the other State owned tertiary institutions should urgently apply for the students loan.

Note that it is the students who are required to apply individually on the nelfund portal and not their institutions of learning. Cross River State is educationally disadvantaged and all students of Cross River State origin should judiciously utilize this unique and rare opportunity.

Students of Cross River State origin in UNICROSS, College of Education Akamkpa, Institute of Management and Technology Ugep, etc. should not hesitate to apply for the students loan as disbursement is commencing next week.

Thank you and God bless.

e-Signed:
Senator Stephen Odey,
(Associate Professor),
Commissioner for Education Cross River State.

The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, has debunked the report by SUNDAY PUNCH of July 7, 2024 that Cross River State, based on the unverified data obtained from the National Union of Teachers (NUT), in Abuja, which stated that Cross River State is among the States that have not recruited Teachers since 2018, the report is wrong, untrue, incorrect and misleading, the Education Commissioner emphasised.

The Commissioner further said: “under my supervision and superintendent as Executive Chairman, CR-SUBEB during the former administration, recruitment was done in Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB), where 500 qualified teaching staff and non teaching staff were recruited for the three (3) UBEC Model Schools in the State; Again in 2019, 2,500 qualified Cross Riverians were recruited into the State Universal Basic Education Board (CR-SUBEB), for Teaching / non-teaching staff positions, which was successfully carried out and qualified persons, after a rigorous and thorough recruitment exercise were successfully engaged.

Note also that in 2023, the former administration recruited 134 best hands for the UBEC Smart School in Obudu Local Government Area, as at today the total number of recruitment of teaching and non teaching staff for the State Basic Education stands at 3,123.

Continuing Odey informed, “presently the State Ministry of Education has applied to the State Governor, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu’s led administration, for the recruitment of 6,000 teachers to compliment what was done by the previous administration, and the Governor’s approval is being awaited. Cross River State is determined to revamp and revive the education sector, he stated.

The Education Commissioner finally advised that, those concerned should verify such information from the Ministry of Education before publishing, to avoid conflicting and unsubstantiated report that are misleading to members of the public.

UPDATE ON CONSTRUCTION OF OKPOKU AKREHA BRIDGE

It is no longer news that sequel to the approval given by His Excellency, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, the Governor of Cross River State for the completion of Okpoku-Akreha bridge, workers, materials and equipment have been mobilised to site and work has resumed in earnest.

On resumption, the three Abutments have been taken to the final level to allow for Plinth, which has already been fixed.

A statement made available by the site Engineer, Engr. Daniel Ogbudu, indicated that work has been paused at the moment because the team of Engineers on site are awaiting the inspection and advice of the expert on rock blasting to proffer solution on how to remove the portion of the rock bed obstructing the construction area without doing any collateral demage to the work. The expert will also proffer advice on the depth to drill before the construction of the Abutment for the 30 meters extension.

Recall that through the instrumentality of Distinguished Senator Stephen Odey Ph D, Commissioner for Education, Cross River State, the Okpoku-Akreha bridge project was facilitated and approved by the immediate past Governor, His Excellency, Prof. Ben Ayade. Construction work on the bridge started immediately, but it could not continue due to paucity of funds.

However, in the wake of the administration of the current Governor, His Excellency, Prince Senator Bassey Edet Otu, the Commissioner humbly appealed to him for the completion of the bridge and the Governor with his Executive Council, graciously granted the request. In addition to the completion of the bridge, the Governor also approved the construction of 3km Okuku-Akifokpa road.

It was later discovered that the shortages was as a result of the estimated numbers of students that the School Principals submitted to the Ministry. “Governor Otu’s led administration is determined to transform the Education sector and we must all work together to achieve this collective goal, and I charge all stakeholders to key into our rescue mission mantra.
