UNICROSS Governing Council Pays Courtesy Call on Commissioner for Education, Cross River State

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Cross River State, Ntufam Dr. Fidelis Ugbo, led the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Francisca Bassey, and other members of the Governing Council on a courtesy visit to Senator (Associate Professor) Stephen Odey, Cross River State Commissioner for Education, at the Ministry of Education headquarters in Calabar. The meeting aimed to formally introduce the new Governing Council members to the Ministry and Commissioner, who plays a supervisory role to the University.

The team was received by the Commissioner and management staff, as he charged them to promptly stabilize UNICROSS, ensuring that graduating students can proceed with NYSC and that certifications are prepared and released in a timely manner. He also underscored the importance of collaborating with the Ministry in its capacity as the supervisory Ministry. “I have every confidence in the Pro Chancellor a renowned technocrat, to justify the trust placed in you by the University’s visitor, His Excellency Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Governor of Cross River State, who is deeply committed to enhancing educational standards and has implemented significant transformations in the sector,” the Commissioner remarked.

We specifically acknowledge and appreciate Your Excellency’s impactful intervention and transformation in the Education sector, notably the payment of WAEC registration fees for over sixteen thousand (16,301) SS3 students of Cross River State origin in your inaugural year in office, and similarly, your second year in office has facilitated the free WAEC registration for over fourteen thousand (14,801) SS3 candidates of Cross River State origin. Additionally, we commend the approval and establishment of a new state owned University, University of Education and Entrepreneurship Akamkpa, the implementation of free tuition for all indigenes in all State-owned public primary and secondary schools, the renovation of the State Ministry of Education Headquarters in Calabar, the renovation of the State Library Complex in Calabar, the approval and implementation of promotions for workers, and the approval of a new living wage for the least paid worker in the State, ensuring better remuneration, amongst other notable achievements.

CHILDREN’S DAY CELEBRATION 2025: EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF YALA LGA MARKS CHILDREN’S DAY WITH FANFARE


At Okpoma, the headquarters of Yala LGA, Honourable Dr. Fred Okem, Executive Chairman of Yala Local Government Council, received salutes on the occasion of the 2025 Children’s Day celebration, as school children marched with joy and happiness during the schools’ March pass, looking forward to a brighter future.

The Executive Council Chairman, Elder Dr. Fred Okem, acknowledged God’s blessing in the gift of children. He vowed to uphold children’s rights, guaranteeing their access to quality education, quality healthcare, and enhanced economic prospects. He expressed appreciation for His Excellency, Senator Apostle Prince Bassey Edet Otu, and the State Commissioner for Education, Senator Associate Professor Stephen Odey, for their innovative policies and transformative impact on the education sector, thereby empowering children with vital skills. Moreover, Honourable Okem leveraged the Children’s Day celebration to request assistance from relevant Government Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) in constructing classroom blocks in schools within Yala Local Government Area, a measure that would substantially improve the learning environment for the numerous school children  in the Local Government Area.

C:River Education Commissioner Meets with Defiant School Heads to Address Term Resumption Infractions

Senator Associate Professor Stephen Odey, Commissioner for Education, Cross River State, convened a meeting with Mission and private school heads in Calabar on Monday, May 5, 2025, to address their non-compliance with the ministry’s resumption date for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic session. He expressed disappointment with their actions and underscored the importance of cooperation to achieve optimal results in the education sector.

Representatives from Mission Schools, including Rev. Fr. Justin Udie and Rev. Fr. Henry Etalong, and Comrade Bassey Anwam of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, attended the meeting with the Commissioner. Rev. Fr. Justin Udie apologized for schools that defaulted and pledged adherence to the Ministry’s guidelines. He also appealed for caution rather than punishment for the defaulting schools. Comrade Bassey Anwam similarly promised compliance with the Ministry’s directives.

The Commissioner for Education emphasized the significance of uniform school resumption dates and the Ministry’s commitment to transforming the education system. The Governor is passionate and poised to take education to the next level as he has also initiated various programs, including registering students for WAEC exams, establishing a new university, and promoting the “People’s First” mantra. After extensive deliberation, the affected school Heads were issued warning letters; the meeting was attended by the Special Adviser on Education to the Governor, Dr. Mrs. Afiong Ugbaja, the Permanent Secretary, Barrister Francis Oyije, the Director of Administration, Mrs. Gloria Lukpata, the Director of Quality Assurance, Mrs. Ngozi Offiong, and the Director of Special Duties, Mr. Cyril Itam.
