Science Lab

We had a wonderful time in Mrs. Ames Science class yesterday! We are studying about the earth and one of the properties we investigated was “density”. Our students were so good during our lab investigation! They had a tub of water, a vial and twenty five pennies. They had to float the vial, suspend the vial and sink the vial and then compare the information in terms of density of water. It is pretty involved, right? The kids did a super job and did some excellent thinking. Then Mrs. Ames did a demonstration on Nutrasweet and sugar showing that the same amount of sweetener could have different densities. She showed the different amounts of sweeteners that sweetened soft drinks in zip lock bags, but made them equally sweet, and then showed that the one with sugar was denser because it had more mass. Mom also learner that the chemical components of Nutrasweet are the same as formaldehyde – just in a different order. Guess what she is not drinking any more!

The kids really needed me during this lesson. There was a lot of movement and unstructured time while working and time to pat me. I got lots of pats because the students found this lesson and the follow questions hard and they got frustrated at times. Mom and Mrs. Ames guided them and gave them hints but would not tell them answers. The kids needed me more than ever and it was a good day to be there for them. At the end of the day, both classes had their best days ever and were very proud!! And that is a snapshot of our science lab day!

Success!!

Today was a huge success! We have been volunteering in a very challenging class doing Animal Assisted Therapy (working 1-1 with some specific students to meet goals) and had not made much progress. Suddenly everything seemed to click for the students. They acted like angels. Each one decided to try his/ her hardest to do his/her work and and request help. Each student actively sought me out when frustrated and patted me and then talked things out with Mom. Each student got his/ her work completed for the very first time and it was 100% correct! This is an example of what it can look like when I help.

Boy, was it exhausting! This says it all:

20131018-084705.jpg And when Mom and I got home, she wanted her recliner, and I had to join her…
We have to share our celebration and our exhaustion and the recliner, right?

Busy Day!

Today was a typical busy day volunteering at Noe Middle School as a Therapy Dog. We arrive at 7:00 AM and check in. Mom has some papers to run off and so we visit the copy machine. Of course, we make stops along the way since teachers and some students want to pat me. The stress is already high for some people – or perhaps I am just irresistible! Then we went to Mrs. Arnold’s class for math. I love math. Sometimes I do tricks to help students select the right answer. Today I stuck close to my buddy, J, to help him with paying attention. Then we went to Mrs. Ames’ class. Guess what happened there? The PA system came on and a voice said, “Earthquake, Earthquake”. I did a perfect under. The class was following directions too!

I watched them like a mother hen making sure that they stayed under the table until the PA system came on and a voice said, “The drill is over”.

They did a great job on the drill. Our day was a good one even if it was very busy!

Take Notes!

As you know, Mom and I volunteer in a middle school. This year, we are collaborating in a math classroom. I was daydreaming as the teacher lectured and one student stoked my head. The students were tucked carefully in their desks, when the teacher said, “Please take notes!”. This image floated into my mind! LOL

What do you think the teacher would have done?!?
I am still imaging our teacher’s reaction and wriggling in glee!

Homework Excuse!?!?

We are volunteering at school and you can imagine what a challenge the teacher faces every day when she asks thirty middle school students for their math homework! There are numerous excuses and I am certain that between the three of us, we have heard them all. But this is my personal favorite. It is a twist on an oldie but a goodie…

I laughed and laughed! How about you?

Meet and Greet

Today was an awesome day! We officially met our teachers that we will collaborate with this year. We are back on the Titans Team (yippee) and will work with Ms. M and her English classes. Then we will work with the cool kids in Ms. B’s class. Ms. B is so excited about me working with her that she even took a picture of me to share on Facebook! ( I feel famous).

20130821-054300.jpgHope it was my good side! Lol what do you think?
Now we can’t wait to meet the kids!!!!

Ace’d It

The mail came yesterday and there was a big manilla envelope addressed to Mom and to me! How exciting!! We had no idea what it could be about but the return address was the American Kennel Club (AKC). We opened it with great ceremony sitting at the kitchen table, sipping iced tea with Dad. Mom even used a letter opener.
Inside was a beautiful piece of paper.

20130616-075409.jpg Our principal at Noe Middle School, had nominated us for a very important therapy dog award. We are in the top 200 dogs in the US. Isn’t that awesome!!! We find out in August if we are the “top dog” and go to Florida in December. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? Stay tuned…but we are very grateful to have Ace’d it!

Last Day of School Funnies!

Finally, school is out! Admittedly- Mom shed a tear or two as she said her goodbyes to the students that she had to whom become so close and with whom I had become bonded. But we had our moments of laughter!
There was the ordering of food…

20130606-210637.jpg
And then the students gave us tips on how to improve class for next year… We laughed and laughed over this one!

At the end of the day, we waved goodbye and looked forward to next year- with hope, giggles and smiles!

Friday: TGIF

At last it is Friday! T.G.I.F. It has been a “ruff” week!! Yesterday we had three substitutes before 8:30! Whew- the kids were glad Mom and I were there to help things stay on track in Ms. S’s class. They like consistency. So do we. Then we went to Ms. A’s class and it seemed like someone unleashed the flying monkeys. But we got through it with teamwork! Did I mention that we had to deal with Dad’s car breaking down as well!?!?! It sure pours when it rains!! But we have made it to Friday and I am updating my Facebook status:

Hope y’all have a great Friday and a super weekend!
