Ride like Rosa Parks

We are planning our Big Adventure. It is based on real life discrimination and like, Rosa Parks’ story, it is occurring on a city bus system. Several acquaintances of ours who ride city buses have encountered difficulties due to being partnered with a service dog and using the bus for transportation. Rosa Parks faced discrimination due to her race and she calmly sat down for her rights.
Mom knows that one of our gifts as a team is the ability to meet and educate individuals about the Americans with Disabilities Act. Basically it is a federal law that allows individuals with service dogs to go everywhere other people do, with few exceptions ( like an operating room and a kitchen). We have some simple literature about it to share and to help people understand.
So…we have a couple Big Adventures planned in the near future on the city buses to do some advocacy for service dog teams! Stay tuned for updates.

International Assistance Dog Week

It’s International Assistance Dog Week! A time to honor and celebrate our canine partners who faithfully mitigate disabilities, are in training and/or have saved lives!

20130806-144142.jpgI know my Mom is grateful for me everyday and she celebrates me. Mom and I were talking about what people needed to know to make a service dog’s life easier. There are some tips to follow:

1. Do not pet the service dog.

2. Do not let your child(ren) touch the dog.

3. Do not allow your dog to approach the service dog by obeying leash laws and controlling your dog.

4. If you want to do 1,2, or 3, you must Ask First. Be respectful by speaking to the human partner, and accepting the response. It is not always an appropriate time to pat a service dog.

5. Do not distract a service dog by whistling, calling names, or offering treats. A service dog is working and should not be distracted from his/ her job.

Finally, on a personal note! Don’t fake having a service dog just to take your dog to Walmart, to dinner or to reduce an airline fare. Not only is it illegal, but it hurts those who do have disabilities and have the privilege of using a service dog to assist in mitigating disabilities!

So celebrate with us! Share these tips! Support a local shelter or puppy raising program!!! Educate! Many Thanks!!!

Public Access – Allowed!! LOL

Today Mom and Dad checked out a gym Dad thought Mom might enjoy joining while I was getting a pedicure! As part of the process, Mom asked a standard question, “What is your policy on service dogs?”. There was silence and a look like this:

“I dunno. Let me ask the manager.”
The manager, who looked stunned at first and resembled a famous person,
(seen below)

did not greet Mom or attempt a conversation. Instead he behaved like Simon, “Are you blind? Is it a blind dog?”.
“Thank you for inquiring. The ADA states that you may ask two questions regarding our public access as a team. One, is my dog a service dog and two, does she do work/ tasks for you? The answers are yes and yes, ” said Mom.
It was then that Mom got our public access granted! LOL. The manager told Mom that we were welcome to use all the facilities, the exercise rooms, the weight rooms, and the pool deck but I was not allowed in the pool to swim with Mom.

Mom found that pretty funny but choked back her laughter and thanked the manager. Later she giggled and giggled when she told me! Imagine me swimming beside her in a chlorine filled pool- it would ruin my hair!
