Last Day of School: 2013

The Last Day of 2013 is upon us and the Christmas Holiday Break is here! The students are so excited!! Ok, they are a bit wild and chattery. We are taking them on a field trip to see a movie and then out to lunch. Who would not be excited? I was excited, too, by all the Christmas cheer in the air.
I wore one of my special outfits for the holiday. I am a diva and a princess who loves pink, so my accessory of the day was pink of course. I think it looks great against my fur. What do you think?

Miss Stephanie took this beautiful picture and then she gave me my very own Christmas present. I was so thankful!!!

Mom received a special present, too. Mrs. Ames searched for a nifty cookbook to help Mom keep her upcoming New Year’s resolution.

Then it was time for hugs.

We wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We will see our students in 2014! What a great ending to a super year! We love our Noe Middle staff and students!

Happy Thanksgiving!

The holiday season is upon us. Mom has started her tradition of thirty days of “thankfulness” during which she posts a short note each day about something for which she is thankful. One day she mentioned Dash and me!! But today is the big day for Thankfulness in the human world: Thanksgiving! Families get together to spend time, eat, and remember their blessings! Did I mention eat? That is my favorite part, of course. The adults know not to feed me but there is a magical table with tiny people who throw food at me. It is like they read my mind. I try to spend as much time there as possible – without Mom catching me. It is like Disneyland for dogs!

20131128-112722.jpg
So as we start this holiday season, I am thankful that we begin with a kids table at Thanksgiving! And to all of you,

Look For The Helpers!

Mom was watching for updates about the Boston Marathon and celebrating Patriot’s Day as usual…even though she lives in Louisville now. There was something special about that town, the time she spent there and her BFF of more than 25 years! Mom even pulled up a picture to show us where she lived, where she walked, and her favorite places!

20130415-190339.jpg It was a sunny day and a beautiful day for a race. Tens of thousands lined the course. Hopeful athletes started their journey of 26.3 miles with goals of personal bests and potential wins!

20130415-190858.jpg The Boston Marathon of 2013 was to be unlike any before. Shortly after 2 PM, two bombs were detonated in the grandstands lining the race just a mere three blocks from the finish. Silence followed the loud explosion. Blood and body parts of innocent spectators spurted. Faces were blanked by shock. Mom talked to me in nervous sentences as she explained this to herself and me
She wondered where her BFF and family were. They always went to watch and some of her family ran the marathon. Mom tried calling her BFF but the lines were busy.
What do you do in such a time? Mom said this several times out loud. I knew she was stressed so I hopped up on the bed. She did not get my first hint. So I shoved my “tiny” body onto her lap and insisted that she pat me. (Remember how good that is for reducing stress and blood pressure?). Mom watched TV for a few more moments.

20130415-193250.jpg “Bella, it is really simple. See the First Responders on TV? When things go wrong, look for the helpers. Today and tomorrow if the kids as us, the focus can be ‘look for the helpers'”. We don’t have to answer big questions. We can focus on those who helped!

Holiday Makeover: Diva Clothes

I know you haven’t seen a picture of me since my first half of the makeover, but I really don’t want want you to see this “naked” Newfie. I deserve beautiful clothes like those tiny prissy dogs. I am reveling in my new cut and trim, which I will reveal, and my personality is beaming!

Mom decided to try to resolve the situation. She and Dad talked about it and they knew just the place. Big Lots! They often have cute dog clothes for special occasions and I need outfits for Christmas and for New Years’s Eve. Off they went on a special mission.
It is a relatively short drive from our home to Big Lots, less than 15 miles. They went there and went straight to the section with the animal clothing, toys, and treats.
First they only located boy clothes. Mom was a bit sad. The tux she found for my brother was kinda cute though.

Then she came to two dresses in the middle of the rack. One for Christmas
and one for New Year’s Eve. Mom was sooo excited! Look how lovely they are and fit for a queen like me !!

A darling diva’s New Year’s Eve dress

And then she noticed that the dresses did not come in my size. Her smile turned upside down. She did not want to disappoint me. But we will just have to keep looking! After all, we have to find something cute for my big reveal!

Operation: Holiday Makeover

Mom said that humans get makeovers for the holidays and that it was my turn. I was really excited …at first!
The weather outside was gorgeous!

20121204-105736.jpg
It was then that I realized I was in for the real deal! A hair cut, bath and blow dry! It is a BIG deal to bathe an XL, XFluffy dog like me. I tried my cloak of invisibility, but Mom knew how to find me despite that trick.
She gathered her tools and placed them strategically in her bathroom.

20121204-110441.jpg
With a snip and a swish, she began to trim. What a job it is to give this girl a decent hair cut. Two hours later, we called it quits. Mom said she had enough “fun” for one day, since we still had to bathe me. Mom told me that she would give me a finish cut in the next couple of days. With that, she stood up and put alway her tools. Look what she took off my coat!

20121204-111020.jpg
Even though I cooperate, it still takes Mom and Dad to bathe me. Hey, it is not fun to stand in the horse mats and get hosed down with cold water, have foamy goo rubbed on you, and then be hosed again! I have to protest by shaking the water and goo off on Mom and Dad. They are pretty good about my shakes though. They don’t get mad. The only thing is, they can’t take pictures of me bathing cos I get them so very wet.
I look like this now since I am not dry this morning even though we did do some drying with a dryer on cool.

20121204-111831.jpg
When I am dry later, I will share my holiday makeover! It was a big deal!

“Deer” Visitors

It was crisp and cold for our 4:30 PM walk. The full moon shone directly on the deck lighting our path. Mom attempted to get us to attend to it but Dash’s nose provided another source of exciting input! His entire body formed a straight line from nose to tail with singular exception of a bent paw indicating the direction of his interest. “There, look at the visitors.”

20121127-193506.jpg
See his intent look?

20121127-193620.jpg
See my surprised look?
I looked and shook my head. My jowls wiggled in disbelief. Mom had not yet noticed. Had Christmas come early? Our tree was not up! We were going to be disgraced!!!! Our cookies and milk were not out for Santa. Oh, heavens! I had not written my Santa Paws letter!
There were four reindeer in the pasture.

20121127-193827.jpg
There were three reindeer in our backyard.

20121127-193926.jpg
Dash was tugging on the leash to meet Santa and sit in his lap. Oh, my heavens! Was Christmas about to be ruined? I had not sent my Santa paws letter. Dash was about to startle the shy reindeer into leaving, taking Santa and the sleigh with them! This was a catastrophe!!! That is (almost) exactly what happened. With a whiff of the tail and a turn of the hoof, the reindeer “dashed” …

20121127-194534.jpg
Into the woods.
“Weren’t the deer beautiful?”
Deer. Not reindeer. My brother did not ruin Christmas after all. I still have time to write my Santa Paws letter. And to all a good night!

Happy Holiday Thoughts

So, the commercials for the holiday have begun. On TV, some holiday shows are playing on the Hallmark channel. Mom is a sucker for sappy hallmark movies and I like cuddling with her.
Whatever ways you spend your time during the winter break, I hope you are with family and friends in a safe and warm space. That is how we think of the secular ( non-religious) part of our lives. Mom and I like to see all our family and visit. We like big gatherings and meals. Oh, and naps on the couch afterward! Mom and Dad’s girls often get together to make gifts.
Mom makes gifts for special family members and friends, too. One thing that she says about making a gift is that all the thoughts that are thinking while you make a gift are captured and stored in the gift like little jewels. I think that is pretty neat. This year she is working on a big gift for Dad. While she works, she thinks happy thoughts about their life together and their future.

20121104-160845.jpg
This is what she worked on this morning while I slept under the table.
Here is what she already has done and laid out to look at.

20121104-161151.jpg
Mom has finished the center of the star and is working on the points. She hopes to have it done for Christmas. Oh, what is “it” ? Mom is making Dad a new quilt!
I bet each of you could make someone a gift this year and while making it fill it with jewels-your kind thoughts.

Bella
