Independent Pups

Humans strive to teach their young to be independent and self sufficient. The goal is for the young human to be able to provide for himself. We dogs like our independence too, especially since we are taught not to beg!

And we will go the extra mile for those yummy foods…

20140113-074604.jpg
Even though we may not want to own up to it! LOL
You would be amazed at what we learn by observing our humans when we are food motivated! It can make us quite independent pups!

People Say the Darnest Things

People say the Darnest things when we are out and about. Public access with a service dog is not new to the United States but it is clear from the humorous responses Mom and I are about to share that many people have not been exposed to a variety of service dogs or service dog etiquette.

20131030-064310.jpg
Mom was walking me then stopped and texted Dad. A person walked up and said, “Is that a blind dog?”

20131030-064618.jpg
Nope! I am not blind nor is Mom. See what gear a blind dog wears for its handler.

Another time, Mom parked her car and unloaded me while two men watched. Again she was asked, “Is that a blind dog?”
Guess what she said? “We both have great vision but I only let the dog drive the John Deere Tractor!”

20131030-065229.jpg That is my trainer, Liz, and her dog, Trazer, driving.
One person actually said, “Can I buy your dog? It is so well trained.”

20131030-065718.jpg That is how Mom felt!!!!

Kids are pretty amazing in the things they say as well!

20131030-070047.jpg
An often asked question is, “Does your dog bite?”

20131030-070211.jpg
If I could answer, I would say, “No, Mom is more likely to bite than me – LOL!”

“Does your dog bark?” kids ask.

20131030-070419.jpg
We all bark. But I only bark if someone comes on our property or enters the house when Dad is not home.

“Is that a bear?” we sometimes hear.

20131030-070627.jpg
This is a bear. We dogs look quite different. Mom has been known to say to adults, “Yes, and I have a zoological permit!”

“What do you need a dog for? Tell me.”

20131030-070925.jpg
“Invisible disabilities.” This comment and a smile tends to stop questions.

And that is how Mom and I deal with being a team, navigating public access, and some of the Darnest Things that occur on a near daily basis …at least in our imagination!

Rescue Me!

You never know about the choices humans make! We dogs often simply shake our heads as humans race to buy the first edition comic books, powerball tickets knowing that they have a snowball’s chance in %%%% to win, or watch reality tv shows about redneck toddlers with tiaras. Some dogs, those born from great lines whose parents are champions with pedigrees, may feel lost when they find themselves sold to the highest bidder. Suddenly, the gap between canine and human language is huge! These poor AKC pups may attempt to reach out for help by calling the the most logical resource: a rescue group to rescue them!
Poor pampered pooches! They are barking (errr, dialing) up the wrong tree for help!

A Dog’s Work Is Never Done!

All dogs work! It’s a fact. We work in many ways that our humans recognize: as service and therapy dogs, police dogs, as search and rescue dogs and as dectector dogs. But our companion counterparts work as well. They raise spirits and lower blood pressure, exercise humans and help them keep a regular schedule. Consider this simple cartoon:

The Hairy Truth

Humans and dogs alike are quite proud of their hair. Celebrities (and some regular humans) spend a large chunk of change on their lovely locks. Good grooming is very important to us dogs and is required of service dogs. Not everyone is blessed with a gorgeous black coat and cute face like me! The hairy truth is … both humans and dogs must resort to some curious methods to augment their hair and create the lovely lengthy look so desired. The secret is revealed:

And that’s the long and short of it!

The Other End Of The Leash

Usually when an author talks about “the other end of the leash”, the intent is to refer to the dog. How to train the dog, how to improve the dog, how to, how to, how to … The dog. At last “the other end of the leash” from “our” point of view. Disclaimer: there was a squirrel in front of the camera person just as this picture was taken! LOL.

I would never treat my partner this way. I am a sensible SD after all. πŸ™‚ Just saying’!

Dogs Do It, Too…On Facebook!

Social media is just as important to us dogs. We use it in a similar fashion to humans. Dogs do it, too, on Facebook. We expect you to learn the “important” things in our lives via our blogs or twitter.

20130602-162647.jpg
We have updated our search methods…

20130602-162916.jpg
We dogs even “spice up” our profiles like those silly humans…

20130602-163149.jpg
And we choose who knows we are dogs- LOL

20130602-163303.jpg
But when it comes right down to it, being a dog is a dead giveaway!

20130602-164626.jpg Humans and dogs reveal their true selves. Just saying’.

Social Media Etiquette: For Dogs!

When we are volunteering, we often talk with students about using (or not using) their cell phones and computers. We speak about being polite in real life and in virtual life. Humans have developed a code of interaction of social media termed “netiquette” when using electronic devices. We dogs have some basic rules too. And here is one of them…

20130427-064428.jpg Wouldn’t you agree with this netiquette rule?

How to Sleep with Humans

Most times writers will take the point of view “how to sleep with dogs”. Seriously, they have it backwards! The key is “how to sleep with humans”! I share the following cartoon to illustrate the point!
