Looking with Awareness

November is Diabetes Awareness Month! It is a subject near and dear to my heart since I was affected by gestational diabetes and am currently affected by hypoglycemia. My brother has Type 1 Diabetes. Several other family member have diabetes. It is a disease that affects us and we want a cure. My service dog, Dash, can detect my low blood sugars.
These two doodles by Lex give a great illustration of highs and lows as experienced by one person- but they are similar to symptoms experienced by most people. The Lows…

The Highs…

20131120-065754.jpg Education is key. Knowing the signs and symptoms of diabetes and talking to your doctor is important!
If you would like a peek into the life of a student with diabetes who does not let the disease stand in her way and as a bonus has a DAD (diabetic alert dog), I highly recommend reading and following, A Guardian Angel For Stella.
For your health and the health of those you love!

Bring It, My Brother!

My brother has an awesome nose! That is how he “knows” that Mom’s blood sugar is low and he lets her know. Yesterday Mom was not feeling great but she did not yet realize her sugar was dropping. Dash scented the issue. First, he gave her “the stare”.

Mom often does not pay attention to subtle cues so he went for the bringsel.

Mom looked at Dash and at me. Then she said, “oh, you are such smart dogs! Let’s test!”
We both jumped up and and followed Mom to get her meter. Guess what? Dash was right…Mom was low and needed to correct her blood sugar. So she had some juice and soon felt better. We are very grateful for my brother who always brings it!

Double Dog Alert

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day – typically a day of sugar and chocolate! It is also a special day for Mom and Dad because it is is the anniversary of their first date! Mom decided to help dad by doing all his chores while he was exercising at the gym, as well as her own to surprise him. She should have stuck to chocolates and flowers … IMHO!
Mom raced through those chores! Dash and I knew she should pace herself. She did not stop to eat lunch or have a snack. Then she walked all of us, a total of three miles, and did her chores. By then Mom was having trouble figuring out what to do next and was walking around the house. Those are typical signals for her. Dash grabbed a brenzel and waved it. Mom did not notice. I blocked her and pawed her leg. Still Mom paid no attention. Then we decided to double team her. I got her with paws on both shoulders and stared her in the eyes. Dash whacked her in the leg with the brenzel. Slowly, Mom said, “Good. Dogs.Let’s. Check “.
The meter showed a 67-low. Mom gave us treats and grabbed a juice. We were not done yet. We wanted her to
sit. Dash is an expert at herding Mom
and he sent her to bed! Then he cuddled her with his head on her tummy and I warmed her feet. Job complete! Double Dog Alert!
