Letter to Santa

Last night, Mom and Dad began their annual letters to Santa Claus. They write letters and mail them and always keep a copy to share and read to see how things have changed from year to year. It is one of their traditions. I thought I needed to write a Santa letter, too, and I am sharing it here.

Dear Santa,
I have been my usual goofie Newfie self this year. I have done lots of volunteering with my middle school kids and with wounded soldiers and it has gone very, very well. I am sorry about the ravioli incident and my begging for food- it just smells sooo good. Overall, Mom and Dad agree I am a very good girl.
I wanted to ask for a few things for Christmas. First, there are are lots of dogs still in rescue. Could you help some of them find good home by Christmas? This is how they feel!

20131202-065928.jpg I remember feeling like that one Christmas… And then Mom and Dad finally adopted me in March. Please Santa, this would be wonderful if you could help adopt some dogs for Christmas!
My brother, Matt, is playing football for WKU.

20131202-070320.jpg Our whole family is excited about the team playing in a bowl game. Do you keep players safe and help them win? If so, that is on my wish list Santa!
And last but not least, could you please, please, please bring treats? These are my favorites and Mom approves of them but I like any treats!

And Santa, please don’t forget Dash and Jack ! They deserve Christmas treats, too. Thank you so much!
Love,
Bella

And that was my Santa letter. Are you and your humans writing one?

BBQ no-no

This Saturday Mom and I were volunteering at a fabulous event for First Responders, Soldiers and their families called Hero Reward in Corydon, IN. This was the 2nd Annual event and they were cutting the ribbon on a new retreat center next to the cabin for families. All kinds of fun activities were available – education from the fire department and their truck, face painting, fishing, football, volleyball, therapy dogs (us!!!), crafts and a large BBQ meal!

It smelled sooo good cooking. My nose kept quivering with excitement and by 4:00 PM, I was drooling with anticipation. A prayer was said, a long line formed and finally Mom and I joined the end of it. Mom had a chat with me about buffets, tables and manners. I was told to “leave it” – all the lovely food and smells and the BBQ! But if Mom says to “leave it”, I will.

We got to the first table and Mom was busy picking up a plate and napkin. I saw IT. A wonderful bonus on the Ground. On the Ground means I may have it, right? I look at Mom and she does not say “leave it” – but she is busy to be honest…

A chicken leg and a thigh! Both fit inside my mouth perfectly!! And then wouldn’t you know…Mom’s radar was working. She turned and exclaimed, “Bella, uh uh!”. She extricated that chicken from my mouth faster than you could say “yummy’! The crowd alternated between roars of laughter and gasps of fear. Mom calmly dropped the offending chicken leg and thigh into a nearby trash can, sanitized her hands, informed me that the ground was “leave it” as well and returned to the buffet line.
Will I ever get some BBQ? Somebody help me!!!

Dinner’s On

All parents have expectations for their children. Most parents strive to have well mannered children and we dogs like to have well mannered pups. Of course, with all young ones, dinner time is a particular challenge. We do try very hard not to stress our humans at feeding times. After all they do serve our meals. LOL!

Recycled Cones

I am not a fan of those plastic cones the veterinarian gives you to stop you from licking an “ouchy”. Mom always recycles mine by returning them to our vet. But some humans and dogs have come up with creative ways to reuse these plastic torture devices and put them to good use. For example, one human decided to increase his respect for others…

Visiting the Dog’s House

Humans have lots of rules for themselves that govern behavior for us and them. They call it manners. We have very good manners at our home and Mom and Dad love us like children. So when people come to visit, they need to know what to expect…

We’ll hang this out with our welcome sign!

Gheens Celebration

September 27th, 2012! The day finally arrived when everyone could know that we won a Gheens Innovation Grant! At 3:30 in the Muhamed Ali Center, the Gheens Foundation was hosting a celebration for all grant winners. We were so excited!

Mom and Aunt Krista were dressed up. Dad was in nice clothes too. Me- I got a yucky bathe and mom used all these on me!

We were anxious during the day but finally 2:30 PM arrived. Aunt Krista went to pick up her family members. Mom and I went to meet dad. Ms. McDowell, Ms. Cave, Ms. Fields and Ms. Hengartner (from Noe Middle School) were meeting us there.

I was Not on the guest list so we wondered if anyone would say something about me. Some people did comment. They said…”beautiful” and “gorgeous”. I like that.

We waited patiently as the program began. I felt the butterflies jump off the paper and into mom’s tummy! I think she was nervous…

Would You Pet A Wheelchair?

Yesterday mom and her friend, Miss Krista were chatting. Boy, can they talk! I usually pick a cool spot and practice a “Down” (lying on the floor) and use my sweet puppy eyes to beg for treats. LOL! They were talking about two of my favorite topics: kids and school. We are working with a newly formed team with young teachers and sixth graders. We are also adding language arts to our curriculum and we have our own classroom!

That means we will be introducing me to students again. We have to educate students about three things: basic dog safety, the use of a therapy dog in a classroom, and service dog ettiquette. When we do this, we consider our audience, their love of dogs or their fear of dogs, their past experience or lack thereof, and their culture and religion. (Mom and Krista take care of health concerns in advance). They explain my dual roles as a service dog and as a therapy dog.

I am a Certified Public Service Dog and a Certified and Insured Therapy Dog through Pawsibilities Unleashed LLC. As a service dog, I go everywhere with my mom. Everywhere means we are together 24/7. I go to stores, restaurants, hospitals, movies and even the hospital. I have full public access. As a therapy dog, I go places to volunteer like schools, nursing homes, parades, special events and see private clients. I do not go to movies, into restaurants, hospitals unless invited by the hospital, or into stores like the mall. I love to be patted. Most therapy dogs do! By now you know the rule that to ask the owner before just patting a dog. Therapy dogs are there for petting and for doing trained tasks with children to facilitate a goal.

When I am at school but not in the classroom, I am working for my mom full time as her service dog! That means I am completely focused on the tasks that I am trained to do for her. Because I am working, it is not a good time to pat me. In school, it is understandable that kids have trouble grasping that have two jobs and when I am doing which job. I remind them classroom and teaching=patting. Hallway and other areas = no patting.

We spent lots of time trying to explain that I was a medical assistance dog and many people just patted me anyway. Most of them were adults- LOL! Finally one day, mom said, “Would you pet a wheelchair?” The person stopped. “Wheelchair?”. “Bella, is just like my wheelchair. She takes care of my medical needs instead of a medical device. Would you pat a wheelchair or my glasses?”. The person stopped and thought, “No”. “Then please don’t pat Bella when she is working”. I wagged my tail. I am way better than a wheelchair but this explanation works!
