Looking with Awareness

November is Diabetes Awareness Month! It is a subject near and dear to my heart since I was affected by gestational diabetes and am currently affected by hypoglycemia. My brother has Type 1 Diabetes. Several other family member have diabetes. It is a disease that affects us and we want a cure. My service dog, Dash, can detect my low blood sugars.
These two doodles by Lex give a great illustration of highs and lows as experienced by one person- but they are similar to symptoms experienced by most people. The Lows…

The Highs…

20131120-065754.jpg Education is key. Knowing the signs and symptoms of diabetes and talking to your doctor is important!
If you would like a peek into the life of a student with diabetes who does not let the disease stand in her way and as a bonus has a DAD (diabetic alert dog), I highly recommend reading and following, A Guardian Angel For Stella.
For your health and the health of those you love!

Know the Signs

November is Diabetes Awareness Month! Mom and I love this simple graphic that uses pups to alert people about three major signs of Type 1 Diabetes.

We call them the three E’s in our home: Excessive thirst, Excessive urination and Excessive weight loss are signs of Type 1 Diabetes. Know them and get checked out by a doctor if you exhibit these signs. It’s treatable and manageable! Take care of you, be aware and spread the word! Know the signs!

Attitude of Gratitude

It was a frosty, foggy and cold morning. We left the house a little late, a little sleepy and a lot tired. There was no time to try out the new shop that Mom and Dad noticed:
We hoped to surprise Aunt Krista with a pastry and a latte. Don’t worry. I had my usual breakfast and walk. Instead of a visit to the new trendy shop, we scraped frost off the windows and shivered. But then we did get a treat! Having our new big black SUV is really nice. It warmed up right away! Plus there is room for me, room for equipment, room for passengers and comfortable driving space. Off we headed for Noe Middle School!
When we got there, I snagged a comfortable place to view the whole class. What do you think? Is this a good spot or what?

We arrived just after role as Aunt Krista was introducing her lesson. At home, Mom is celebrating 30 Days of Gratitude in November. At school, the lesson in CARE(advisory) and Language Arts each focused on appreciation. All of these relate to the American holiday of Thanksgiving. Students were able to work on examples of things for which they were appreciative, how they showed appreciation, and talked about ways to appreciate each other. They had to understand the definition of the word and be able to use it.
Some kids really struggled with this, so we reminded them about success.
I think my nose gets me to success but it is like the picture on the right; it is a process or a journey and not a straight line!

It was the start of a great day and Aunt Krista showed her appreciation of us by hugging a very special, XL, XFluffy, XLoving dog!

We just have to appreciate that:
