101 Reasons to Read

We volunteer at school and our main focus is assisting students who read below two or more grade levels than their peers. But what about us pups? Shouldn’t we have learned some basic skills? Just think of the books available to us!?!?

Oh, the things we could learn if we could read like humans! Just check out the lovely titles! Mom read them to me as she giggled!

Library Blues!

Last Thursday while we were volunteering, I took a short break from my therapy dog duties. We went to the library and chose a spot where the shelves were being cleaned. (That way we would get some time to relax since no one would look for a book on empty shelves!)

But then I thought I should be a role model and read. You know what I found out?!? The same thing as this pup!

Guess I need a dog book and not a book with words! Where is my bone?

The Morning Paper

In our home, we “fetch” the morning
newspaper together. Mom usually gets a latte to accompany it. Then she plops in a very comfy chair to enjoy a thorough reading of the news of the day. Does that happen? Not always! Sometimes I believe that Mom needs a bit of Bella!

I always know when she needs a good cuddle!

Hobbit Holiday Party Prep

This may be one of my favorite memories! We always began our day with a target for our lesson (a goal), a short quote or idea and then our class rotates through three parts independent reading, teacher instruction, and individually differentiated computer assisted instruction. As a special activity to close the 2012 year, our team planned to attend a viewing of the movie, The Hobbit, to celebrate.

Our classes changed our routine and began reading the book, The Hobbit. Aunt Krista has a melodious voice and read aloud for ten minutes. Everyone was mesmerized. But on this day, Aunt K had little voice to share with all her classes. She askedMom to read with her. They took turns reading. It was going well but by the last class I know Mom was tired. And then something special happened during our preparation for the Holiday Hobbit Party. One of our students volunteered had to read. (The Hobbit is a very difficult book so this was a brave decision!)

The students and I were lulled into the world created by J.r.R Tolkien, the “Middle Earth”.

Our imaginations took over and even I “saw” the hobbits, elves, and Gandalf, the Wizard as we lived and breathed with the characters!

A Picture & A Thousand Words

My favorite spot in the classroom is a purple beanbag in the book nook. LOL!
A picture is “worth a thousand words” and I am among a thousand words! : )

Great Book, Greater Dogs

You know that I am a dual certified working dog. I work for my
Mom as a service dog and for others as a therapy dog. But there are many jobs that dogs are trained and/or certified to do. ( Being certified with a legitimate organization is important because it shows you do know your job, it helps to protect you legally and it often mmprovides your insurance. Great reasons, yes?)
The book I am sharing with you has many one two page stories about jobs that dogs do. Dad bought it for Mom. We read it and loved it. I thought you might like to know about this book and read it, too.
The title is: Hero Dogs. The author is Karl Meyer.

There are so many types of jobs that dogs do. They protect, they serve, they guide, they rescue, they detect, and they do tasks everyday to assist people. Dogs are heroes and some stories of their deeds are shared in this book. I am going to post a few pictures with my captions to get you interested!
This is Bilbo. His special job is lifeguarding. He is a Newfie like me.

This is Loki. He is a German Shepherd Dog. His story about being a member of the Colorado Task Force1 Urban Search and Team is highlighted.

This dog represents the dogs that work with and for our military troops to sniff out explosives. A dog can safely cover a field in ten minutes that would take five or six soldiers an hour to check for explosives.

Aren’t Newfie’s just the coolest? Here is one that is trained to jump from a helicopter to rescue a man in the water!! There is a school in Italy that trains dogs just to do this job.

Hope you enjoyed my book tour.
Now read it! Puhleeze and thank you!

Attitude of Gratitude

It was a frosty, foggy and cold morning. We left the house a little late, a little sleepy and a lot tired. There was no time to try out the new shop that Mom and Dad noticed:
We hoped to surprise Aunt Krista with a pastry and a latte. Don’t worry. I had my usual breakfast and walk. Instead of a visit to the new trendy shop, we scraped frost off the windows and shivered. But then we did get a treat! Having our new big black SUV is really nice. It warmed up right away! Plus there is room for me, room for equipment, room for passengers and comfortable driving space. Off we headed for Noe Middle School!
When we got there, I snagged a comfortable place to view the whole class. What do you think? Is this a good spot or what?

We arrived just after role as Aunt Krista was introducing her lesson. At home, Mom is celebrating 30 Days of Gratitude in November. At school, the lesson in CARE(advisory) and Language Arts each focused on appreciation. All of these relate to the American holiday of Thanksgiving. Students were able to work on examples of things for which they were appreciative, how they showed appreciation, and talked about ways to appreciate each other. They had to understand the definition of the word and be able to use it.
Some kids really struggled with this, so we reminded them about success.
I think my nose gets me to success but it is like the picture on the right; it is a process or a journey and not a straight line!

It was the start of a great day and Aunt Krista showed her appreciation of us by hugging a very special, XL, XFluffy, XLoving dog!

We just have to appreciate that:
