Last Day of School: 2013

The Last Day of 2013 is upon us and the Christmas Holiday Break is here! The students are so excited!! Ok, they are a bit wild and chattery. We are taking them on a field trip to see a movie and then out to lunch. Who would not be excited? I was excited, too, by all the Christmas cheer in the air.
I wore one of my special outfits for the holiday. I am a diva and a princess who loves pink, so my accessory of the day was pink of course. I think it looks great against my fur. What do you think?

Miss Stephanie took this beautiful picture and then she gave me my very own Christmas present. I was so thankful!!!

Mom received a special present, too. Mrs. Ames searched for a nifty cookbook to help Mom keep her upcoming New Year’s resolution.

Then it was time for hugs.

We wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We will see our students in 2014! What a great ending to a super year! We love our Noe Middle staff and students!

Science Lab

We had a wonderful time in Mrs. Ames Science class yesterday! We are studying about the earth and one of the properties we investigated was “density”. Our students were so good during our lab investigation! They had a tub of water, a vial and twenty five pennies. They had to float the vial, suspend the vial and sink the vial and then compare the information in terms of density of water. It is pretty involved, right? The kids did a super job and did some excellent thinking. Then Mrs. Ames did a demonstration on Nutrasweet and sugar showing that the same amount of sweetener could have different densities. She showed the different amounts of sweeteners that sweetened soft drinks in zip lock bags, but made them equally sweet, and then showed that the one with sugar was denser because it had more mass. Mom also learner that the chemical components of Nutrasweet are the same as formaldehyde – just in a different order. Guess what she is not drinking any more!

The kids really needed me during this lesson. There was a lot of movement and unstructured time while working and time to pat me. I got lots of pats because the students found this lesson and the follow questions hard and they got frustrated at times. Mom and Mrs. Ames guided them and gave them hints but would not tell them answers. The kids needed me more than ever and it was a good day to be there for them. At the end of the day, both classes had their best days ever and were very proud!! And that is a snapshot of our science lab day!

Ruff Morning!

This was a Ruff Morning. It followed a Ruff Night. Mom battled lows from hypoglycemia and both Dash and I kept alerting her. In the morning, Mom was still too low to drive to volunteer at her usual time so she used Facebook to contact her collaborating teacher to let her know she would be late. Finally, around 8 AM Mom was stable and Dash got a nap. I closed my eyes and waited while Mom got ready to leave. Then she got my bandana. My tail began to wag. I was going to see my kids! This morning was looking up!
We drove to school and went to class. It was wonderful to see the kids and Ms. Ames. We got there in time for advisory AKA Paws class. The kids are so sweet. They love on me and hug Mom. One even discovered my blog! That made me feel like this:

Mom was really happy, too, but she has no tail to wag to feel like a peacock LOL!
So a morning that started out Ruff turned out to be fantastic!

No Excuses

Many times students in the classroom look for excuses to cover for the homework they failed to complete. There are the typical “I forgot it at home” and “my brother destroyed it” excuses. Recently since I have come to school, students have attempted to use “my dog ate my homework” excuse. But they do not realize that there are some things that we just cannot eat!

Top Lessons I Taught My Mom!

Mom did not know it but I came to her life to teach her a few things just as she taught me to be a service and therapy dog. Dogs are great teachers when humans listen to the lessons! Here are the top things I taught her:
1) Listen with your head and heart!
When a person speaks to you, cock your head, open your ears, mind and heart, close your mouth and LISTEN! This is a skill dogs perfected long ago and humans who use it are most helpful to friends and family.
2) Share your joy and your toys! We dogs wag our tails often and wildly when we see our beloved masters and friends. We bring our toys to play fetch and to show them off and share them. We share our food. Dear Humans, compete less and share more. Be joyful and share the blessings in your lives not the sorrows. Share your meals with family and friends. Play games together and share your workload making it a game. You will find so much joy your (imaginary) tails will wag!
3) Take a walk! Yes, exercise! Get outdoors and walk with a friend or your children. Tell stories and match wits! Look at nature. Breathe deeply. Race one another for ten yards. Spin in circles. Life is worth living – and dogs do provide good examples! A mere 15-30 minutes a day and you will feel much better!
These simple things that I taught Mom really changed her lifestyle and she thinks it is for the better. She listens to everyone with her heart and hears their stories. Mom shares with all people in a variety of ways, and not just family, friends and students. She has learned from me that exercise, especially a walk, makes her a happy and healthy person!
Hope these tips help you!

Take Notes!

As you know, Mom and I volunteer in a middle school. This year, we are collaborating in a math classroom. I was daydreaming as the teacher lectured and one student stoked my head. The students were tucked carefully in their desks, when the teacher said, “Please take notes!”. This image floated into my mind! LOL

What do you think the teacher would have done?!?
I am still imaging our teacher’s reaction and wriggling in glee!

Homework Excuse!?!?

We are volunteering at school and you can imagine what a challenge the teacher faces every day when she asks thirty middle school students for their math homework! There are numerous excuses and I am certain that between the three of us, we have heard them all. But this is my personal favorite. It is a twist on an oldie but a goodie…

I laughed and laughed! How about you?

Last Day of School Funnies!

Finally, school is out! Admittedly- Mom shed a tear or two as she said her goodbyes to the students that she had to whom become so close and with whom I had become bonded. But we had our moments of laughter!
There was the ordering of food…

20130606-210637.jpg
And then the students gave us tips on how to improve class for next year… We laughed and laughed over this one!

At the end of the day, we waved goodbye and looked forward to next year- with hope, giggles and smiles!

Age Old Excuse: Updated!

Dogs do go to school- obedience school! Do dogs have homework? Yes! And are dogs the designated lost homework excuse creators? Oh, yes! How many times have we heard, “But the dog ate my homework?!?!”?
Let’s illustrate those points! Dogs have homework and eat it too!

20130521-093524.jpg
And they get tired of eating all the kids homework, plus Mom and Dad’s!

Just Sayin’ – it is not so easy!

Therapy Pupdate

I am so excited! We love Noe Middle School and they love us! We are back to our regular schedule with our students from last semester and their new, amazing teacher, Ms. Singleton, who is doing an outstanding job in Language Arts with them! Our students are so funny. They want a smartboard and are accustomed to technology! We had a conversation like this one day!

20130329-102517.jpg
Sometimes I even try to help with editing. But there are some things even I cannot digest!

20130329-102637.jpg
Our kids work very hard though and with dedication are making significant gains! We are impressed with our Titans!!
Mom and I also added a teacher and her students to our routine. We will be visiting Ms. Atkin’s Champions. She works magic with her students and we can’t wait to get to “Noe” them better. It looks like we will work with them during math and a special review time. We are very excited since Math is our favorite subject! For once we want Spring Break to be over! And that is our therapy dog Pupdate!
