updates…

Hello, hello, hi, hello. I just wanted to let you all know of a few updates.

  1. I finished Lady Midnight two weeks ago and I have been trying to write the perfect review but book hangovers have been causing a delay.
  2. I am in the middle of posting another review for These Shallow Graves as well. (Actually it is finished but see number 3.)
  3. I am beginning to re-brand my blog/self. It’s going to be called Beauty and the Book. Since my two favorite things are makeup and books. So this means that I am creating makeup looks based off book covers. This causes a delay in posting reviews since I have to create makeup looks and take pictures. But both Lady Midnight and These Shallow Graves makeup looks are in the works. I switched my Instagram name and am working on trying to post once a day. (which is freaking hard when you work full-time and have a puppy but that is my April goal.) Clicky click here for my Instagram.
    1. Subnote: I hope you guys like this idea. I wanted to do something that included a few of my passions and I just thought this would be real fun. But it might be dumb so I am just testing the waters.
  4. Have you seen the movie trailer for Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children?? OMG it looks amazing! I feel like I need to go pick up the book off my shelf and actually read it now. You can watch the trailer below if you haven’t seen it.

Okay that is all I have for now! Talk to y’all soon!

late night chats, cookies, and writing advice

So as I usually do whenever I sit down to start writing a blog or write my manuscript I decide the first thing I should do is distract myself with the interwebs for a few hours. (Seriously though, I sat down at 930 this morning to start reviews and its now 3pm.) Anyways, I came across this live chat with Elise Kova and Susan Dennard from January 23rd. I was actually going to participate in it but then remembered on January 24th so that did not really work out as planned. I posted the video below so you can all watch if you so desire…

I love both these authors. They are very real people and I love their personalities.

So why did I post this??

Because I wanted to. Well because I am working on the reviews for their books, Truthwitch by Susan Dennard and Earth’s End by Elise Kova. So look for those in the next 24 hours.

As a writer, and by that I mean a person with two hands that sometimes writes down really crazy ideas on scraps of paper or on a computer and tries to make sense of them in some way that kind of resembles a story, I love reading advice. It is motivational and inspiring. It helps push me to continue what I am doing in hopes that one day my word vomit will actually be a completed novel. Susan Dennard has great advice for writers on her website. Click here to get some of that magical cookie madness. I really encourage every aspiring writer to read some of her advice! It’s fantastic with everything from the word vomit to query letters to publishing.

Speaking of cookies I really want some right now. For real when are my girl scout cookies showing up?!??! Every time I say my dogs name (Samoa) I start to drool for some of those tasty, delicious Caramel deLites!

Maybe I’ll just go make some…

And finally what you have been waiting for!! An exclusive excerpt from Earth’s End

Vhalla snapped the reins and dug her heels into Baston’s sides, forcing him into an all-out run. From above, she heard the shouts of her waking enemy.

Thick and melodic calls erupted in the night, a language completely foreign to Vhalla’s ears. She didn’t have to know the words to know they weren’t friendly, so Vhalla pushed harder, pressing herself to Baston. Vhalla took a breath as she heard arrows being knocked overhead.

The sound of bowstrings being drawn in mass made gooseflesh dot her arms. Another shout, a single word and arrows cut through the air, determined to rain death around her. Even if Vhalla was certain her chainmail would shield her, the horse was completely unarmored; if Baston died, she was as good as dead. Vhalla twisted in her saddle, sweeping a hand through the air. The curtain of wind sent the arrows scattering harmlessly.

They shouted in protest, angst-ridden that she continued on unscathed.

The second assault came faster and hastened Vhalla’s mounting frustration. She had to be out of their range soon. More lights began to blaze above and behind her, casting the ground below in a faint glow. The light illuminated the edge of the city, and Vhalla was forced to stake her life on the hope that once she was out they wouldn’t catch her.

The arrows soared through the air once more and Vhalla twisted, knocking them away in mass. She expected to hear a cry for a third assault, but instead what she heard was even more disheartening. Two words that someone said in a thick Southern Common.

“Wind Demon!”

She became their prey. The sound of thundering hooves came from the direction of where the city first began.

Vhalla crossed under the edge of the city, plunging into the welcoming darkness. Had it been a day ago, Vhalla would not have given those riders a moment’s worry. Baston would outrun any normal horse, plus with her wind he was faster than thunder across the sky. But Baston had been ridden hard with only a brief rest.

Vhalla shifted her vision and peered over her shoulder. In the distance she saw them, riding relentlessly after her.

Sweating, panting, clutching the reins with white knuckles, Vhalla pushed all her energy into the wind at Baston’s and her back. More—they both had to give more. In her blind determination she almost missed the whiz of an arrow through the air.

Vhalla thrust out her arm and stopped the arrow midflight. She closed her fist and threw her arm backwards. The arrow turned and sped back at its original owner. Vhalla watched it soar straight into the Northerner’s eye, the one she pointed a finger at. The man slumped, and then fell off his saddle. She swallowed hard, looking away as the others’ cries grew louder.

Eyes, she would always go for the eyes. Whether someone was or wasn’t a Groundbreaker with stone-like skin was a risk she couldn’t take; she wouldn’t have many shots. Another archer held his bow, waiting for a different opportunity to take his chance.

Baston was already breathing heavy, and Vhalla knew she had to get them off her tail. The four riders behind her rode on fresh mounts and had the advantage of their night’s worth of sleep. Vhalla turned and pointed a finger. Sweeping her hand upward, an arrow freed itself from the other archer’s quiver. With a twist of her wrist, and the keen focus of a killer, Vhalla sent it into the unsuspecting Northerner’s eye.

One of the remaining two riders fell away as they swerved through the trees, his companion pushing forward. As the man swung wide, Vhalla realized they were trying to flank her. Vhalla grabbed for the dagger strapped to her wrist, sending it straight for his eye.

In the process, the woman rider had caught up with Baston, raising a wickedly curved blade toward his haunches. Vhalla threw out her other arm, sending the rider toppling head over heels. It wasn’t chance that the assailant’s blade slit her wielder’s throat in the fall.

Vhalla held out an expectant palm, her own dagger returning to it after a moment.

Wiping the blood on her thigh, she quickly sheathed it against her wrist before grabbing the reins once more. Vhalla swallowed a cry for speed; shouting at the horse would not make it go faster. It would only further compromise her position.

Vhalla pressed her lips together, forcing herself to keep her composure. It was not the first person she had killed. She had killed on the Night of Fire and Wind, she had killed the man who had murdered Larel, and she had killed with her bare hands at the Pass.
What had sunk deep into her bones was the acceptance of what she must do. It was knowing she had become a killer. It was how easy it was for her to slay her foes without even thinking of each of them as a whole person that showed Vhalla she’d gone far down a path she’d never wanted. They were entities, enemies, barriers, but they weren’t human.

Distracted by her inner conflict, Vhalla was caught completely off-guard by the first assault coming from the trees. A Groundbreaker swung down from the air, bringing his sword against the back of her head. Vhalla attempted to dodge at the last second, but it was too late. The blade slipped off her chainmail but it left her vision blurred and her ears ringing.

She blinked, trying to sort her senses as she pushed Baston onward, putting the assailant behind them. Groundbreakers jumped from limb to limb in the trees above her—free and fearless. Vines came to life to meet their extended hands, allowing them to soar through the air. With a twist or a tug, their lifeline shrunk back, curling around branches to pull them upward.

She wanted to feel amazed; perhaps she would have, if these people weren’t out to kill her. Another swung low, and Vhalla dropped off to the side of the saddle to dodge. Righting herself, Vhalla redrew her dagger in one quick motion as a third swung forward to attack. She sent the blade soaring through the vine the Groundbreaker held.

The man fell through the sky; Vhalla’s mind betrayed her, showing a different body plummeting through the air.

With a growl, she turned her blade to the next Northerner she saw, relying on the same tactic. She would show them why one did not hang above the head of the Windwalker. The other body fell with a sickening thud, and Vhalla left them behind her. With a twitch of her wrist, her blade returned to her hand.

Baston’s pace had slowed, and Vhalla snapped his reins again. This was the first time the beast did not heed her command, and she felt uneasiness settle across her.

Five Northerners still jumped from tree to tree overhead as dawn began to fade into early morning. Vhalla wondered if they were biding their time for rider and mount to tire. If she were they, she’d do the same thing. Baston’s sides heaved with exhaustion.

Their presence began to wear on Vhalla, and she watched them with bated breath, waiting for the next assault. Another hour passed and Baston slowed to a trot; she expected this to be the moment they attacked. But the Northerners held fast, following from welcoming branch to welcoming branch, each bent to meet their feet and hands.

They were toying with her, like cats with a mouse.

Is it really November 23rd?

Hello dear friends. I have not forgotten about you. In fact everyday I think about you and how I should be posting on here and at the very least update you on why I have been inactive. But then life gets the better of me.

First off, my October was dedicated to me making my very elaborate Halloween costume. Okay, not so elaborate but I have not used a sewing machine in well over 15 years and I needed to use one for my costume so that was time consuming to say the least. I spent every waking hour I was not at work making this freaking dress. But it was well worth it because it turned out fantastic. Do you want to see?

Okay, okay I was gonna show you anyway…

download_20151101_154725

Yes finally my dreams came true and for one night I was Arwen Undomiel and I felt like the Evenstar.

Let’s face it, I am probably going to wear that dress once a week just so I can feel like I live in Rivendell. (takes a break from writing this to go and put dress on)

So that was October. November is NaNoWriMo and unlike last year were I failed miserably, this year I’ve been burning the midnight oil. I put so much more effort into my writing. I guess that’s what they say though, you only get out of it what you put into it. And I am pouring my heart and soul into this novel. It is nothing like my original idea 3 years ago and has even changed over the last 3 weeks. I have found purpose for storylines and plot twists I could not have dreamed of. I gave myself a goal to finish the entire book by December 31. If I keep up with what I have been doing I think it can be done!

I apologize for my lack of reviews and book news and ramblings and such. But this is all for the greater good! I did however just finish two books and I plan on writing reviews for those in the next couple days as a rest break between writing my novel.

Until next time…

I’m on vacation…

Right here to be exact.

image

Just hanging out with some wildlife.

image

And spending my time in the pool.

And because I am me, I packed one too many books in my suitcase. Leaving me no room for my computer. But do not fear I am going to use that life skill called patience (which I am not good at at all) and use my phone or tablet to update this blog. It is not easy. Especially when auto correct likes to change every word you type. But I am full of feelings because I finished Queen of Shadows last night and I need to vent. I plan to do the daunting task of writing it with my thumbs in the next 24 hours. I also have another patience tester and plan on posting my fall TBR and new release post I said I would post last week.

So cheers everyone and I’ll talk to you soon!

oh, um hi, hello there…

The strangest thing happened to me. I died. I was floating in an endless abyss of glowing golden stars and azure colored skies. I felt every memory and every emotion I had ever had rumble through my body like I was on a never ending roller coaster. I felt infinite, I felt ethereal, I felt like a god. Then it all stopped. I was falling, free falling, faster than any human could survive, it felt like breaking through thousands of panes of thin glass, shredding every last inch of my soul from my body. But that was nothing compared to the pain of slamming into the ground. Like hitting a wall of clarity, I was back in reality, I was still alive.

Okay so no, none of that happened. But that would have been pretty dang cool to have some out of body experience. Instead I’ve just been taking a break. Summer can do it to a girl. Most nights you just want to be outside, dancing in the rain, running a thousand miles an hour in whatever direction you please, experiencing life and living, just living. However, I am back! I am here to share all my thoughts, large and small, offensive or not, and write more reviews and thoughts and writing and any other thing that is exciting in my life whether you think it is or not!

I have a handful of book reviews I need to write. My friend, Kara, keeps pestering me about writing them especially one for The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Adhieh. OMG! That book though, definitely one of the best books of the year and most highly anticipated sequel for next year. I also plan to write either full reviews or a short summary review for the following:

  • Zodiac by Romina Russell
  • In the Shadow of Blackbirds by Cat Winters
  • Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
  • Asylum by Madeleine Roux
  • Legend by Marie Lu
  • The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings
  • Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
  • After the End by Amy Plum
  • Endgame: The Calling by James Frey
  • The Abhorsen Trilogy by Garth Nix

I just finished reading Endgame so that will probably be one of the first full reviews I post. The Abhorsen Trilogy is an amazing series that everyone should read. It influenced so many of today’s authors. I loved Sabriel when I finally got to reading it last year but Lirael and Abhorsen made me deeply passionate about the series. I mean I am in the process of creating a very intensely accurate Lirael cosplay costume!

There are also so many exciting books coming out this fall that have me anxious for their arrival. Number one being Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas, the fourth book in the Throne of Glass series, and it will be in my greedy hands tomorrow!! Now if only I could start reading it tomorrow but I promised Kara I would start reading Magonia by Maria Dahvana Headley which is fine with me because I’ve been wanting to read it since it came out and I finally bought it. Anyway I will write an entire post about upcoming releases this week and start posting some reviews!

Talk to y’all soon!!

Liebster Award

A couple weeks ago I was nominated for the Liebster Award by Raven over at Dreamy Addictions. Make sure to go and check her blog out. She is pretty awesome and writes tons of reviews! Someday I hope I can write as many as she does!

Questions

1. Name your top five favorite books released this year?

I have been so bad about reading newly released books this year, like really, really bad. But there are definitely two that are worthy of getting recognition especially since they will probably be on my list of the best of 2015. Those are Bone Gap by Laura Ruby and An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. (I recently just posted reviews on both too so go check them out here and here.)
2. Who is your Top three book boyfriends and why?

Number one without a doubt is Will Herondale, I mean how can you not love him. (And because I chose Will over Jace I am not putting Jace on the list, that would just be weird.) Now this gets hard. I would have to go with Akiva from The Daughter of Smoke and Bone, he is just so dreamy and loyal and loving and that body… And lastly, The Darkling from The Grisha Trilogy because I do have a bit of a dark soul and he just had this very alluring quality to him.
3. If given a chance to be a character in your favorite book which character would you like to be and why?

Celaena Sardothien!!!! I fell in love with her about 20 pages in to Throne of Glass. She is such a strong character with so many redeeming qualities. And she is a bad ass assassin. Who wouldn’t want to be an assassin?
4. A  good book that you would recommend to a friend?

If He Had Been With Me by Laura Nowlin. It has all the feels. It is a bit slow at the beginning but it gets so good. I was definitely not expecting it to give me as many feels as it did but wow. I think it is a book few people know about and is definitely a hidden gem worthy of reading.
5.Where is your favorite place to read?

I read everywhere. I love reading in bed, on the couch, on my balcony, and on the bus. As long as I am connected to a book it doesn’t matter where I read because I am usually in a different world.
6. Do you prefer to read at Morning or Night?

I wish I could read all day everyday. But that is not possible. I love reading at night more than the morning.
7.Who’s your top three favorite authors that you would want to meet?

This is kind of cheating because I already met her but Laini Taylor. I want to be able to spend more than 5 minutes talking to her. Maybe like 5 days or years. She is just a beautiful writer, storyteller, and person. Sarah J Maas for a lot of the same reasons. I think I want to crawl into her mind. John Green would be fun too. I think I would need a long nap afterwards because I feel like talking with him would be exhausting but in a good way.

(And if I could pick someone who was no longer alive I would say Tolkien. No explanation needed.)
8.Which book would you like to have made into a movie adaptation?

I think The Grisha Trilogy would make a good movie but I would love if Throne of Glass was made into a TV show because a movie would just not work with all the things that happen in that series.
9.How many books do you read in a month and in which format(paperback/ebooks/Hardcover)would  you most prefer to read?

I try to read about 8 books a month sometimes it’s more sometimes it’s less. I prefer hardcover books but don’t mind a paperback or eBook occasionally.
10. Any funny accidental moments happened in your life while you are lost in a book?

Winter of 2013/2014. Polar vortex. -45 degree windchills. It was freaking freezing. So here I am on the bus going to work reading Clockwork Princess. I was at that one point with that one character who has a sudden pain in his chest because you know…yeah can’t say much else without spoilers. Anyway, I was balling but luckily kept in the sobs just had streams of tears falling down my face. I was getting many weird looks from the other commuters. Well it’s time for me to get off the bus, still crying, I step off and the severe cold froze my tears that were stuck to my eyelashes thus freezing my eyes shut. This was in Chicago on Michigan Avenue at 9am meaning there were people everywhere and I was blind and running into them because of the repercussions of too many feels.
11.What inspired you to start a blog?

I wanted an outlet to express my feelings and thoughts about books and discuss books with new people. Plus it’s good practice to improve my writing. Now I just need to learn how to use the internet better.

11 Random Facts About Me

dreaming…

I just finished reading Bone Gap by Laura Ruby. And oh my, that book just captured me and took me away. This might be the best book that has come out this year! I am going to try and get a review done this weekend and also finish my review for An Ember in the Ashes!

I haven’t posted a review in a few weeks but wanted to let everyone know they are coming! So while you wait go and pick up a copy of Bone Gap and read it now!

Books, books, books

As many of you know yesterday was Independent Bookstore Day. I thought this was a perfect excuse to buy more books. (Although I had just ordered a handful of books from Amazon two days prior.) However, I couldn’t go to a local bookstore in Chicago because my boyfriend and I spent the weekend in Milwaukee. So as one would guess I searched high and low, spent hours doing research, calculated distances, lost track of time, forget where I was, my hair became frazzled, my nails bitten down to short stubs, and then finally I found a bookstore worthy for me to spend all my hard earned money at. (Okay, so I took about 3 minutes by googling best bookshops in Milwaukee.) I ended up at this fun place…

boswellbook

Boswell Book Company! It was a cute bookshop. There was plenty of room to shop and move around. Every section contained used and new books, although about 80% of the books were new. There were a few small sections with just second hand books as well. I prefer when they are all together on the same shelf, it makes life easier. They also had an area for book signings and readings. There were a few things going on because of the day but I also saw a few signs for upcoming author appearances. One of the cooler parts about the bookstore is that they had a section for book clubs. It’s a great way to find out about all different books that clubs are reading to really expand your own collection. So let’s get down to the good part.

Here is everything I got between my amazon order and my bookstore shopping.

Another Fine Myth and Myth Conceptions by Robert Asprin (I’ve been trying to find the MythAdventures series forever and they are out of print. But at least I found this book with the first two combined!)20150503_153109

Lirael and Abhorsen by Garth Nix (Now my collection is complete!)

Angelfall by Susan Ee

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets to the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Bone Gap by Laura Ruby (I am so ashamed. This was on my most anticipated list for 2015 and I just bought it. eeep.)

An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

The Crown of Embers by Rae Carson (I am finally going to continue this series. Although, I only bought the second book. Eventually I’ll by the last one.)

The Diviners by Libba Bray

The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks (Random find. But it sounds so good! This includes all 3 books in the trilogy. Way of Shadows, Shadow’s Edge, Beyond the Shadows)

Well I am off to go read for a bit before the Blackhawks game tonight. Talk to you all soon!

Oh my…

I cannot believe I haven’t written here in over a month. Unacceptable! But in all honesty I can believe it’s been that long because my life has been taken over. Enemy agents have been trying to infiltrate my brain and draw me to the dark side. Trying to make me join the resistance to keep this planet in peace. But I will not go forth, I will not give up. I will endure and I will show everyone the true path to enlightenment.

Okay, you are probably asking, WTF?! My life really has been taken over. Taken over by a game called Ingress. I’m going to try to explain this as simply as I can. It is a real life Sci-Fi game. Two sides are battling for this stuff called exotic matter, or XM. I joined as an enlightened agent trying to better the human race and use this XM to make a better society. Anyway, this game revolves around walking around and hacking portals, destroying portals, taking over portals, etc. I pretty much live and breathe Ingress. But it is sooooo much fun. Go check it out here. Join the enlightened. Better our future!

The other problem in my life right now (well I wouldn’t necessarily say problem just the most stressful, anxiety building time of year) is the NHL playoffs. They started two weeks ago but prior to that is the most important final three weeks of hockey when it’s determined who will make the cut and who will play who. So yes, my life has revolved around Ingress and hockey for the last 5 weeks. It is so bad that I have not been reading as much either. (yes you can virtually slap my wrist) I am so ashamed to call myself a reader at this point. But do not worry! I am going to make it up to all of you! I am going to work my darn hardest all day today to post three, yes three, book reviews for y’all. Now one might not post til tomorrow in case I get too tired to revise and review before the day ends but I am going to try so hard to get it all done.

I am also pressuring myself into reading two books every week. And spending at least two days a week writing my novel. It’s time to get my life in order! I am even punishing myself today. I had every intention of walking to Target, may or may not have played Ingress on my way there, and buying An Ember in the Ashes, because I WANT TO READ THIS BOOK SO BAD! But I cannot do it. That will have to wait until I can give you all something first.

So please wish me luck on this endeavor! And GO HAWKS!!
