Christ Is the “Blessed”

Today is Sunday, the seventh day of June, 2026, in the Season of the Church.

May the peace of God embrace you today and may You feel His love for you.

It is day 158 of 2026, with 207 days remaining in the year.

Day 24,923 of my life

21,630 days since I was baptized into Christ

Four days until the Feast of St. Barnabas, Apostle

Today is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day!!! Woot!! That’s it. What more do we need?

Daily writing prompt
How do you build loyal subscribers?

What? I don’t worry about that. I’ve said before that this whole thing originally started as an online journaling project (on a different site, many years ago). I couldn’t care less how many “loyal subscribers” I have. That being said, there are a few of you out there that I really love, who do at least look over here most days. I think you know who you are. I’m afraid to start tagging, because I don’t want to forget anyone. Anyway, I would keep writing this, even if there were no subscribers, on the hopes that one person might “randomly” stumble across this and maybe their life might be transformed.

This is my pebble in the lake, rippling outward. *wink wink nudge nudge* I hope that the person that that is directed at gets it. 💜

This morning went well. Yes, I have already been to church and back, had lunch, ordered groceries, and so on. It’s after 4:30 PM, at the moment. I will still paste in the “morning” prayers, though, as this is still reflective my morning Jesus Time. Church was good. In fact, the more I reflect on it, the better it was. The sermon was great (although the pastor said it was better in the early service), the music was good, and I always love getting to read the Scripture readings. And, of course, there was Communion, which is always wonderful.

C and I may go get some ice cream soon. Maybe CHOCOLATE!!

My first cup of coffee, this morning, is CAFE Olé by H‑E‑B Medium Roast Cinnamon Hazelnut. This favorite of mine is back in the Favorite Five lineup. My second cup is Crème Brûlée, by Angelino’s, another new flavor for me (I think . . . I don’t remember ever trying this one, before). “Creamy vanilla bean custard flavored coffee.” It has a lovely aroma and a very nice flavor. Lunch today was from Pizza Buzz. Love their pizza!

JESUS TIME

Lord God, You are the Almighty One who fills all eternity and whose name is holy. Yet You have assured us that You dwell with each baptized believer in Christ. On this first day of the week, I pray that all who hear Your holy Word would experience the fulfillment of that promise.
By Your holy Gospel enter my heart and make it Your own dwelling place. As Your holy Word is being preached and Your holy Sacraments given to me, let me receive Your grace with a believing heart, that being so strengthened I may be not only a hearer of Your Word, but also a doer of Your will to my neighbor.
Restore unto me the joy of Your salvation and give me the strength to put into practice what I have heard and confessed. Keep me a humble learner for as many days as You give me on earth, and then receive me into the heavenly home You have prepared for me; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Redeemer. Amen.
(Lutheran Book of Prayer, Prayer 4, Sunday Morning)

Heavenly Father, this is the day of resurrection and rest. Thank You for this day to hear Your living Word and obtain the blessed Sacrament of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ! Forgive me all my sins and prepare me rightly in heart and mind to joyfully receive all Your generous gifts so that I may serve You well in Your kingdom. Bless all pastors who powerfully proclaim the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection that all may come to repentance and new life! Bless Your church throughout the world in order that it may be a burning lamp, attracting all who see it to You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
(Portals of Prayer, Prayer for Sunday Morning)

God of wisdom and love, source of all good, send your Spirit to teach us your truth and guide our actions in your way to peace. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
(For All the Saints, Sunday of the Week of Pentecost 2, Opening Prayer)

Before the mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    from everlasting to everlasting you are God. . . .

For a thousand years in your sight
    are but as yesterday when it is past,
    or as a watch in the night.
(Psalms 90:2, 4 ESV)

Today I am grateful:

  1. For the opportunity to gather with the community of saints to worship the Lord, hear the absolution of my sins declared, and be fed with Word and Sacrament, as His Word is preached and His Body and Blood shared in Holy Communion
  2. For the opportunity to read His Word in today’s worship service
  3. That from everlasting to everlasting, You are God
  4. That the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace (Romans 8:6)
  5. That this day, my life, and all things belong to You, Lord

Lord, in Your mercy, hear, now, the prayers lifted up to you for all who need strength, healing, comfort, and peace.

If you are reading this, I encourage you to stop and pray for someone, at this time. Or, if there is something on your heart, please leave a comment. What can I pray for you?

Psalm of the Day, Psalm 73:1-12

Truly God is good to Israel,
    to those who are pure in heart.
But as for me, my feet had almost stumbled,
    my steps had nearly slipped.
For I was envious of the arrogant
    when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

For they have no pangs until death;
    their bodies are fat and sleek.
They are not in trouble as others are;
    they are not stricken like the rest of mankind.
Therefore pride is their necklace;
    violence covers them as a garment.
Their eyes swell out through fatness;
    their hearts overflow with follies.
They scoff and speak with malice;
    loftily they threaten oppression.
They set their mouths against the heavens,
    and their tongue struts through the earth.
Therefore his people turn back to them,
    and find no fault in them.
And they say, “How can God know?
    Is there knowledge in the Most High?”
Behold, these are the wicked;
    always at ease, they increase in riches.
(Psalms 73:1-12 ESV)

Untamed Prayers, I Was Envious of the Arrogant, by Chad Bird

Bird begins this one by quoting Matthew 5:8 (which, ironically, is the You Version VotD today): “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” And in Psalm 73:1, Asaph writes that God is good to those who are “pure in heart.” But we have a huge problem. Our hearts are anything but pure. And Asaph, himself, even illustrates this with his struggle with envy. “He almost sulks because unbelievers have it way too easy on this life (73:4-12).”

But why should we care about the success of the unrighteous?? Why does that matter to us? Ultimately, it is because, in our flesh (remember Romans 8:6 up there?) we desire what they have. That is the very essence of envy . . . Desiring what someone else possesses. Do we even stand a chance?

“Indeed, we do, when we stand beneath the one who himself was pure in heart for us. There is no clearer picture of the fulfillment of all the beatitudes than our Lord on the cross: poor in spirit, mourning, meek, pure in heart, being the blessed one that we, by faith in him, might be blessed, too. Let us repent, therefore, of our envy, the impurity of our hearts, and cast ourselves upon the mercy of Jesus, praying, ‘Create in me a clean heart, O God’ (51:10).”

That right there was a little bit of a “whoosh” for me, this morning, as I reflected on Jesus’s fulfilling of His own teaching. 💜

“Here’s a picture of the bad ones I once envied:

Everything came easily: they did not need
To work to make their living, want
A catchy line, an angle to find lovers or companions
At the dining table: tan and fit from laps and basking
Poolside, they order drinks and gaze at the deep sky,
Chuckle at the devil, protest unjust god:
Superstitions meant for dimlit losers.
They eat the land bare, suck the ocean
Dry as though they had it in their goblet, tall
And frosted, with their tongues’ tips swish
Strong currents of the deep.”
(Excerpt from Laurance Wieder, Words to God’s Music, Psalm 73, AS IF)

I keep getting these reminders, over the past few weeks, that we are not required to be “striving” or “working” for this life. It is Spirit-led . . . we are, of course, to be walking in the Spirit. But Christ wants to do it all for us, via His “easy yoke.” I had more of that today. In the You Version Bible plan, From Lost to Loved: A 30-Day Study of Romans 8, we focused on Romans 8:6, today.

For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
(Romans 8:6 ESV)

First, let’s remember that the “righteous requirement of the law” has been fulfilled in those of us who are baptized into Christ. But here, Paul gives us some advice about where we set our minds, upon what we set them. The mind set on the flesh is “a life obsessed with comfort, control, and self-preservation. It preaches peace through escape or achievement.

“But the mind set on the Spirit is entirely different. It lives awake to God’s presence and responds to His prompting. The Holy Spirit doesn’t just comfort, He reforms. He reshapes how we think, what we value, and how we walk. Life in the Spirit isn’t just sin avoidance or behavior modification; it’s the presence of a new inner life.”

This is all rooted in the Gospel of Christ. The world around us defines peace as “escape or numbness, but . . . Anything short of Spirit-given peace is death disguised as calm. True peace is the settled assurance that even in the storm, you belong to God.”

My life is not anchored in striving, but in Spirit-given peace.

And then, the reading excerpt from For All the Saints, this morning focused on Mary and Martha, from the Luke 10 passage.

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
(Luke 10:38-42 ESV)

“The mental states of Mary and Martha were analyzed. The two sisters were equal in their love of the Lord but differed in temperament. Mary was ravished by the words of the Master. Martha was flitting about the house that nothing should be lacking to perfect hospitality. Martha, well knowing that her sister could never be detached from the feet of Jesus, did not chide her, but in a way remonstrated with Jesus for so charming her sister that she neglected to do what needed to be done. ‘Master,’ she said, ‘don’t you care that my sister leaves me to do all of this alone? Tell her to help me. I know she won’t leave you unless you tell her to, so entrancing are your words. But the dinner must be made ready and one pair of hands is not enough.’ Then the Lord, who was delighted with the devotion of both women, did not chide the attachment of Mary, nor did he blame the complaint of Martha, though he leaned to Mary. ‘Martha! Martha!’ he said, ‘Don’t be so worried about getting the dinner and all worked up about many things. Mary has chosen the better part, to forget the things of the body and to be concerned for the things of the soul. I am grateful to you for preparing the dinner for me and my disciples, but to save souls is my meat and drink. The things of the body will pass away when “that which is perfect is come.” At the same time, those who do as you have done will not lose their reward. They feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the sick, and entertain strangers. Yet those who attend to the one thing needful do more. But let no one complain of another, for each serves according to the gift received from God.'”
(Desiderius Erasmus, Erasmus of Christendom translated by Roland Bainton)

Notice that third sentence. It really caught my attention. “Mary was ravished by the words of the Master.” Mary, the one who didn’t strive, didn’t work, and boy is Martha upset about that! Don’t we see that in our world today, as well? The people who strive really don’t like the ones who like to just sit at the feet of Christ and soak Him in, those of us who are “ravished by the words of the Master.” That is so me. I love His Word. His Word is Truth; His Word is Life. Where else can I go?? Jesus Christ has the words of eternal life!! And oh, how I cherish those words!!

Lord God, source of light and life, by the light of your truth let the virtuous know your goodness and sinners feel your mercy, so that together they may drink from your river of delight and rejoice now and ever in your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
(For All the Saints, Prayer following Psalm 36)

“I place this day into Your hands because it already belongs to You anyway.
I exchange my plans for Yours.
Yes, I want to pay attention to the voice of the Holy Spirit today.”
(Déborah Rosenkrantz, A Miracle Every Day)

My Jesus, I praise You for Your Words. Thank You for making me love them so much! Thank You, Lord, that when I hear truth preached and sung, it makes my heart burn within me, literally. Now, Lord, I pray that You help me to disperse my pebbles wisely, that the ripple effect of the Gospel of Christ would spread and spread, affecting all around me. Whether it is through this writing, or through songs that I sing, or prayers that I pray, or through the words of my mouth as I speak to people, O let Your Word go forth in its power an glory, affecting all who see and hear. All to Your glory, O Lord!

I thank You that You are the “blessed” one in the Beatitudes, Lord Jesus! Yes, we should try to live as they describe, but You already did it for us! And then, Lord, as we are crucified with You and then baptized into Your life, we no longer have to strive or work for any kind of approval. We don’t have to work or strive for forgiveness, for You have already won it. Our Father loves us as we are, because we are brothers and sisters of You, Jesus! Oh, how I love You!! Thank You, thank You, thank You!

In Your holy, precious, and beautiful name I pray. Amen! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Grace and peace, my brothers and sisters!

Because Jesus!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

Peace

Today is Tuesday, the twenty-eighth day of April, 2026, in the fourth week of Easter.

May the peace and love of Christ flood your soul, today!

It is day 118 of 2026, and there are 247 days left in the year.

Day 24,883 of my life

Twelve days until Mother’s Day. And I don’t have a gift, yet. I’d better get busy.

Today is Global Pay It Forward Day. If I do something nice for you, don’t try to pay me back. “Pay it forward,” if anything. It is also Great Poetry Reading Day.I will try to find some before the day is over. And, in addition, it is Poetry Break Day, which seems to be more about writing poetry than reading it. Perhaps I will write another haiku today.

Daily writing prompt
When do you feel most productive?

That’s a tough question, because it certainly isn’t right now. I’ve been up since 7:30, this morning, it is now 11:30, and I’m still not finished writing this blog! Because I am so easily distracted, not at all “productive.” On the other hand, I’m not under any deadlines, today, really. I mean I have to be at work by 4:15 this afternoon. But other than that, nada. Productivity is not really a concern for me, anymore. But there are some things that I would like to get accomplished. I would like to write more songs; I would like to get my Scripture memory goal going. I have not been that productive there, either. So I have work to do. But I feel most productive when I can manage to be more focused. But that doesn’t seem to happen very often.

It is a pretty normal Tuesday. I will be in the computer center at the library from 4:15-8:15 tonight. Therefore, I will be preparing lunch for the family, today, instead of dinner. Today it will be pretty much the same as last Tuesday. Broccoli Cheddar Soup from H-E-B Meal Simple, along with grilled cheese sammiches.

My first cup of coffee this morning is CAFE Olé by H‑E‑B Snickernut Cookie. It is currently occupying a place in the Favorite Five, but is not truly one of them. As previously stated, it will soon be replaced by CAFE Olé by H‑E‑B Cinnamon Hazelnut. The second cup is Golden Peach Cobbler, by Angelino’s, a very delicious limited edition. Very simply, “Peach cobbler flavored coffee.”

JESUS TIME

O Lord Jesus Christ, only Savior of the world, to You I lift up my heart, will, and intellect, and I thank You again and again that, through Your boundless grace, You have protected me through the night against the cunning and power of the enemy and that I have awakened once again restored and fit. O Lord Jesus Christ, You who are my possession and inheritance, my salvation is in Your hands. I do not know of any other helper, whether in heaven or on earth, save You alone. Therefore, I implore You on account of Your unspeakable martyrdom, suffering, and most humiliatingly bitter death, that You would be gracious and merciful to me, both today and for the rest of my life. You, dearest Jesus Christ, have suffered out of great love for me, a poor sinner. Forgive all my transgressions against You. Protect me and keep me safe from sin and from every evil, until You graciously call me away to eternal joy and salvation; hear me on account of Your most holy name. Amen.
(Lutheran Book of Worship, Prayer 36, Tuesday Morning)

Gracious heavenly Father, I thank You for keeping me safe through the quiet hours of this past night. As a new day dawns, help me to see, through the eyes of faith, that the challenges that might be in front of me today are not greater than the power behind me. Help me to see that everyone I engage with today was created in Your image and thus worthy of respect. If someone has a need, help me to meet that need where I am able. Enable me to trust the promise that You have the power to work all things for my good. In the name of Jesus, Your dear Son, I pray. Amen.
(Portals of Prayer, Prayer for Tuesday Morning)

Almighty God, as we celebrate the resurrection, may we share with each other the joy the risen Christ has won for us. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
(For All the Saints, Tuesday of the Week of Easter 4, Opening Prayer)

“Let me wear Your name well, O Jesus!”

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
(Philippians 2:5-8 ESV)

Today I am grateful:

  1. That the love of God was made manifest among us
  2. That even though I frequently do not know what to do, my eyes are fixed on Christ, knowing that, as I praise Him, His steadfast love endures forever
  3. That I have already been blessed in Christ with every spiritual blessing; i.e., I already have everything that I need; The Lord is my Shepherd; I shall lack for nothing (Psalm 23)
  4. That Jesus Christ did not consider His equality with God to be something to hold onto, but emptied Himself, by taking on our humanity, humbling Himself to the point of death on the Cross
  5. That He has given me the task of peacemaker; I’m still in training, but praying that I can fulfill that role to His glory

Lord, in Your mercy, hear, now, the prayers lifted up to you for all who need strength, healing, comfort, and peace.

If you are reading this, I encourage you to stop and pray for someone, at this time. Or, if there is something on your heart, please leave a comment. What can I pray for you?

Psalm of the Day – Psalm 54

O God, save me by your name,
   and vindicate me by your might.
O God, hear my prayer;
   give ear to the words of my mouth.

For strangers have risen against me;
   ruthless men seek my life;
   they do not set God before themselves.
Selah

Behold, God is my helper;
   the Lord is the upholder of my life.
He will return the evil to my enemies;
   in your faithfulness put an end to them.

With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
   I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
For he has delivered me from every trouble,
   and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.
(Psalms 54:1-7 ESV)

Untamed Prayers – “They Do Not Set God Before Themselves,” by Chad Bird

Sometimes, when we read words like, “They do not set God before themselves,” we think, “Duh!” Or, “you think??” And while that seems obvious, here is what Chad Bird writes about that.

“The psalmist is not saying something apparent – just the opposite. He is pointing out what is largely overlooked, namely, the ultimate reason that enemies attack is because they are at war with God himself. While there may be peripheral reasons for their animosity, animosity toward heaven is the central cause. Having turned against God, they turn on his people. Not feasting on the Lord’s good gifts, they try to devour believers. Not setting God before them, they set traps and lay snares for the followers of Christ. . . .

“We are attacked for one fundamental reason: our foes are at war with God; therefore, they are at war with us. . . . In Jesus, we have already won, but until that final victory is revealed in the resurrection, Christ will surround us with his holy angels, cover us with the protection of the Spirit, and save us for the sake of his name.”

And we would also do well to remember that our real enemy is not flesh and blood, and that advice that Moses gave to Israel when their backs were against the Red Sea and they saw Pharoah’s army coming.

“Fear not, stand firm, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will work for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again. The LORD will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.”
(Exodus 14:13-14 ESV)

     “Hear, save me,
       In your name,
       By your strength.
(My soul calls)
       From those who know
       Nothing, nor you.

       It helps me,
       Supports me,
       Abashing the bad ones.
Praise God
       For crushing them
       Now, in my lifetime.”
(Laurance Wieder, Words to God’s Music, Psalm 54: HIDEAWAY)

For All the Saints – Tuesday of the Week of Easter 4

“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”
(Matthew 5:13-16 ESV)

“Above all else let peace be sincerely desired. The populace is now incited to war by insinuations and propaganda, by claims that the Englishman is the natural enemy of the Frenchman and the like. Why should an Englishman as an Englishman bear ill will to a Frenchman and not rather good will as a man to a  man and a Christian to a Christian? How can anything as frivolous as a name outweigh the ties of nature and the bonds of Christianity? The Rhine separates the French from the German but it cannot divide the Christian from the Christian. The Pyrenees lie between the French and the Spaniards but cannot break the indissoluble bond of the communion of the church. A little strip of sea cuts off the English from the French, but though the Atlantic rolls between it could not sever those joined by nature and still more indissolubly cemented by grace. In private life one will bear with something in a brother-in-law only because he is a brother-in-law, and cannot one then bear anything in another because he is a brother in Christ? If nothing else will move your majesties, not the sense of nature, not respect for religion, not such frightful calamity, let the power of the Christian name bring you to concord. How much of the world is Christian? In the midst of the non-Christian world Christians are as a city set upon a hill to give light, but how will they move the heathen to embrace the faith when they so contend among themselves? If we would bring the Turks to Christianity we must first be Christians.”
(Excerpt by Desiderius Erasmus, Erasmus of Christendom, translated by Roland Bainton)

This! So much this!!!

We could insert a lot of other “labels” in this reading, couldn’t we? Democrat and Republican. Conservative and Liberal. Even Protestant and Catholic. If we are to be the light of the world, we must not turn against one another. This is a “cause” that I am becoming more and more passionate about as Christ continues to transform me into the role of “peacemaker” or “repairer of the breach.” My brothers and sisters, the breach is large, perhaps more so than it has ever been, because people of Christ’s Church have been bombarded by “insinuations and propaganda” (remember that this reading was written somewhere between the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries! Yet it still holds truth for today.

We need to do better.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”
(Matthew 5:9 ESV)

O God, by whom the meek are guided in judgment and light riseth up in darkness for the godly; grant us in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what Thou wouldst have us do; that the Spirit of wisdom may save us from all false choices, and that in Thy light we may see light, and in Thy straight path may not stumble, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
(For All the Saints, Tuesday of the Week of Easter 4, Closing Prayer, William Bright)

Christ have mercy! We are far from fulfilling our task as “light of the world,” Jesus! Help us to stop turning on one another and live in peace, with “Christian” being our primary label. Turn us away from our obsession with worldly politics, especially considering that this world, along with its petty politics, is passing away. It will be disintegrated, or, as we used to say when I was an adolescent, “It’s all gonna burn!” None of this will mater, Lord, save our devotion to You and the peace that we try to work when we were alive in the flesh. Let us obey Your commands to love one another, Lord. Have mercy, have mercy, have mercy!

Amen.

Grace and peace, my brothers and sisters!

CHRIST IS EVERYTHING!!!

Daily writing prompt
What alternative career paths have you considered or are interested in?

Interesting question! Since I am semi-retired, now, and am currently working at the best joy I have ever had, the only possible “alternative career path” that I would consider if owning my own used book store. But at this stage of my life, I would not consider that. However, there are some alternative career paths that I considered, earlier in my life. At one point, I wanted to be a professional baseball player. I might have been able to do that, but probably wasn’t good enough. I also wanted to be a rock star. Lead guitar player and/or lead singer for a rock band. I’m good enough to sing with one, but probably was never good enough to play guitar in one. I could hold my own, and think I play better than, say, Neil Young, but I’m definitely no Eddie Van Halen. For the record, I can sing better than Neil Young, too. But song writing? Nah. He’s got me beat, there.

I also almost went to library school once. In 2010, I was unemployed for three months after getting laid off from a job that I had had for ten-plus years. During that time, while filling out dozens of job applications (and almost getting hired by a college library to work a third shift position), I started the application process to a nearby college that provided a totally online Master’s of Library Science. But before that got going, I got a job and decided to go ahead and stick with that job.

But it’s all good, because now I can pretend I’m a librarian. I mean, some folks don’t know the difference, right? I work at a library, so I must be a librarian, right?

Today is a normal Friday. C is working from home, and I am at the library computer center all day. It’s time to pull subscription bags for November, so I will be doing that today.

JESUS TIME

“Our Father who art in heaven, lead us not into temptation. O dear Lord, Father and God, keep us prepared and alert, eager and diligent in Your Word and service, so that we do not become complacent and careless as though we had already achieved everything. We implore You by Your mercy not to let the devil sneak in and take away from us Your precious Word or stir up strife and factions among us, or otherwise lead us into spiritual and physical sin and disgrace. Grant us wisdom and strength through Your Spirit that we may bravely resist the devil and gain the victory. Amen.”
(Lutheran Book of Prayer – Prayer 56 – Friday Morning)

“So take me where You want me to go
I’m ready to follow You home
I know the waves and wind will blow
But You still hold me in Your hands
Oh, Jesus, You have good plans”

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.
(Proverbs 9:10 ESV)
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
(John 14:6 ESV)

Today I am grateful:

  • For the Way, the Truth, and the Life
  • For the good plans that Christ has for my life; I am ready to follow Him wherever He leads me
  • That You, Jesus, are the model of perfect love; thank You for shaping my love for You and for others
  • For a beautiful marriage that Christ has given to C and me, for 40-plus years
  • Once again, that I am not my own; I belong to Christ, and, in that belonging, I also belong to the community of saints

Lord, in Your mercy, hear, now, the prayers lifted up to you for all who need strength, healing, comfort, and peace.

If you are reading this, I encourage you to stop and pray for someone, at this time. Or, if there is something on your heart, please leave a comment. What can I pray for you?

“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
(Matthew 22:36-40 ESV)

Jesus, help me to love You, today and every day, with all that I am. I belong to You; You own me!

Psalm of the Day – Psalm 85

LORD, you were favorable to your land;
you restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You forgave the iniquity of your people;
you covered all their sin.                   Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
you turned from your hot anger.

Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
and put away your indignation toward us!
Will you be angry with us forever?
Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not revive us again,
that your people may rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O LORD,
and grant us your salvation.

Let me hear what God the LORD will speak,
for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints;
but let them not turn back to folly.
Surely his salvation is near to those who fear him,
that glory may dwell in our land.

Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
righteousness and peace kiss each other.
Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
and righteousness looks down from the sky.
Yes, the LORD will give what is good,
and our land will yield its increase.
Righteousness will go before him
and make his footsteps a way.
(Psalms 85:1-13 ESV)

Love has a name,
a countenance,
a heart
that bears our sorrows,
shoulders our grief,
exposes our weakness,
atones for our sins –
revealing,
in radiant glory,
the face of God in Christ.

Look upon me, Lord,
with renewing,
refreshing life.
See beyond my brokenness,
my ceaseless struggle –
my trespasses,
transgressions;
all I have done
and left undone. . . .

Deliver me,
I pray,
from the casual embrace of death;
from the despair
of my desire.

Reclaim me.
Restore me –
that I may hear Your voice,
walk in Your ways,
to the glory of Your name –
for You have made Yourself known to me;
called me Your beloved.

In You,
all that is
good,
beautiful,
true,
holy,
worthy,
joyous –
converges and embraces.”
(Excerpt from Endless Grace – Psalm 85 – The Face of God in Christ)

The following is from For All the Saints – Friday of the Week of Pentecost 19

Now concerning the matters about which you wrote: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband. The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

Now as a concession, not a command, I say this. I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another.

To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single as I am. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
(1 Corinthians 7:1-9 ESV)

“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name.
Your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.”
(Matthew 6:7-15 ESV)

“Why refrain from that which God instituted, nature sanctions, reason persuades, divine and human laws approve, the consent of all nations endorses and to which the highest examples exhort? What more sweet than to live with her with whom you are united in body and soul, who talks with you in secret affection, to whom you have committed all your faith and your fortune? What in all nature is lovelier? You are bound to friends in affection. How much more to a wife in the highest love, with union of the body, the bond of the sacrament and the sharing of your goods! In other friendships how much there is of simulation and perfidy! Friends flit like swallows. Few continue to the end. But a wife is faithful and only death dissolves marriage, if indeed it does. If you suffer adversity, you have one who will console you and try to make your trouble her own. If you stay at home you have a respite from the tedium of solitude. If you are away you long for a kiss. Absent you desire, returning you rejoice. By marriage the number of your loved ones is increased. You acquire another father and mother. What more charming than to have a little Aeneas who will cherish you in your old age and in whom you are reborn! You say, ‘Your children may die.’ But do you think you will have no sorrows if you are celibate? Nothing is more safe, felicitous, tranquil, pleasant and loveable than marriage.”
(Desiderius Erasmus, Erasmus of Christendom, translated by Roland Bainton)

“O Thou most holy and everloving God, we thank Thee once more for the quiet rest of the night that has gone by, for the new promise that has come with this fresh morning, and for the hope of this day. While we have slept, the world in which we live has swept on in its awful space, great fires have burned under us, great waters have been all about us, and great storms above us, but Thou hast held them back by Thy strong hand, and we have rested under the shadow of Thy love. The bird sat on the spray out in the darkness, the flower nestled in the grass, we lay down in our home, and all slept in the arms of God. The bird will trust Thee this day to give its morsel of meat, and the flower will trust Thee for its fresh raiment; so may we trust Thee this day for all the needs of the body, the soul, and the spirit. Give us this day our daily bread. Amen.”
Closing Prayer: Robert Collyer)

The more I consider this excerpt by Erasmus, the more I love it. And how much difference a couple of days can make in my state of mind and heart. For, on Tuesday, I read a C.S. Lewis excerpt about marriage and the enemy used it to send me into an almost tailspin, as he threw past sins in my face (which, by the way, he has no right to do, but that’s a topic for another day). But Christ is faithful and He prevailed, reminding me that I belong to Him, and that has been the theme for the rest of this week. And I even see hints of that theme in Paul’s excerpt from 1 Corinthians, this morning.

You see, not only am I not my own, and belong to Christ, I also belong to my wife. What a beautiful picture of marriage this paints, that mutual belonging to one another. And I believe that our marriage has been a great picture of that partnership, now, for over forty years. We have never approached this marriage with an attitude that one of us has precedence over the other. It has been an equal partnership all along.

And I truly love Erasmus’s description of this relationship. We are “united in body and soul,” and have this “secret affection,” and have mutually committed all of our faith and fortune in this marriage. We share everything, even, and most especially, our faith in Christ. Now, while I don’t necessarily agree with Erasmus’s take on friendship (I had to look up “perfidy”), there has never been a friendship like this marriage. And I have yet to have a close friendship that has lasted more than forty years.

We have comforted each other in adversity (each with our individual adversities, and some that we experienced together). We enjoy each other’s company (even when we aren’t in the same room, it is comforting to know that the other is there). And when one of us is away for a time, it is lonely in the house, even if there are other people there. When my wife goes on a business trip, I usually sleep with a bathroom light on. And we have been blessed with two daughters.

Sure there are sorrows along the way. And not everything is perfect, because neither one of us is perfect, although she is closer than I. And I declare to you that my wife and I rarely, if ever, fight about anything. You may not believe me, but it’s true.

So I believe Erasmus’s statements to be true. I have found marriage to be safe, felicitous, tranquil, pleasant, and loveable. We are not our own; we belong to Christ, and we belong to one another.

Thanks be to God!

My Jesus, I praise You for this marriage! I thank You for these forty-plus years of relationship that is safe, felicitous, tranquil, pleasant, and loveable. I thank You that You have worked in our hearts along the way, to draw us closer and closer to one another, and have taken us through some desperately dark and treacherous times. We do not always agree on everything, but I daresay that we might agree more than most. But I’m probably a little biased, as well. My wife is beautiful and loving, and I treasure her, probably more than I have let her know. I pray that You help me to show this more often to her.

I thank You that You have bought us, Jesus, and that we belong to You, and in that belonging, we also belong to one another. I thank You for the beauty that is marriage, a marriage that has been based in You from the beginning.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

Two are better than one,
    because they have a good return for their labor:
If either of them falls down,
    one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
    and has no one to help them up.
Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
    But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered,
    two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
(Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NIV)

Grace and peace, my brothers and sisters!
