Other December Happenings

Millie asked me to curl her hair like her friend Emerald, who has naturally curly hair. She actually held very still. When I was done she admired herself in the mirror for a long time.

One Saturday morning while Daniel was gone we ate donuts for breakfast. Sadie has realized that frosted donuts with sprinkles are actually gross. She likes glazed donuts. Elise and Millie are still drawn in by the sprinkles and choose those every time. Millie never eats more than a few bites.

Not sure if you can zoom in on this, but Millie and Sadie were some of the last kids off the court after the chicken dance. I was getting worried I was going to have to run down and carry Camille off, but she decided to listen to Sadie.

We spent several days over school break coloring/playing in boxes. The one below is our beloved Lightning McQueen. Paco made this for Sadie about 5 years ago. It is still sticking around.
 Empty boxes are the best

I sent these pictures to Daniel to document that I actually cleaned out fridge leftovers, which is like my kryptonite. It makes me gag and occasionally dry heave, but I was feeling productive so I dove in.

I spent hours cleaning out the jets in our master bath. We haven't used them in 3 1/2 years and I found out the hard way that you are supposed to run the jets regularly. The stuff that continually shot out of the jets was not pretty. When I finally got it clean the girls "went swimming". They donned their swimsuits and would have played for hours if I let them.

The library: another time killer over the holiday school break. I figured since we were on the children's floor I would allow Elise to act like an animal on the furniture.

Late afternoon naps on the couch. So sweet and so bittersweet, since I can't let them last for long.

Smoothies. This pregnancy I haven't wanted a lot of sweet stuff but a smoothie sounded good one morning. The girls were thrilled since I haven't made them in a while.

Special Announcement

Nielson child #4 is a.................

We cannot believe it. It was shocking, surprising, confusing, exciting. etc. The girls all insisted beforehand it was a boy, but Daniel and I both assumed a girl. I didn't realize how set I was that it was a girl until the ultrasound tech confirmed what I thought I was seeing. People keep asking if we are just so thrilled to finally get "our boy". That is not how we feel at all. We did not keep having kids to try to have a boy. We would have been very happy with a girl.

Of course, we are excited to meet this next child and try to figure out a boy! Now I have to start shopping and asking for tips from all my good friends who have lots of boys.

Christmas Day

Sadie and Elise had been looking forward to Christmas for months. The anticipation of the big day is almost too much to take for a 7 and 5 year-old. Millie would jump up and down and yell, "yay Christmas!" but definitely didn't remember last year's Christmas.

I missed getting a picture of the set-up before the girls went down to look at it. Here they are in the traditional, early morning top of stairs pic. Millie was not very happy about being woken up because she still didn't understand. I love her face.

The girls all received outdoor toys from Santa: Sadie got an electric razor scooter, Elise got a balance bike, and Millie got a 3-wheeled razor scooter and helmet. Following the emptying of stockings and thorough examination of Santa gifts, we set to work unwrapping the presents under the tree.

Millie wanted to open every present completely, which means unwrapping and taking it out of the packaging completely. Her turns took a little longer. This was the first year in a while that I didn't feel kind of gross about how many presents my children opened. I love Christmas and giving gifts to my kids, but some years I have worried about the message my kids were getting.

Christmas Activities

This year I snagged tickets to the Alpine live nativity way back in November. They sold out the day they went on sale (for $1 a person), so I was glad to get some. It was a pretty cold night for an outdoor activity, but it was so well done. We walked up and met some Roman soldiers at the entrance, who explained what we would see. Then we wound our way around barns with camels, sheep, peacocks, chickens, and other animals. The girls really enjoyed feeding the sheep. The final small barn had Mary, Joseph and Jesus. It probably would have felt slightly more reverent if the kid in front of us hadn't barfed all over as we walked in, but there was still such a peaceful feeling. When we walked out we were given hot chocolate and then we were on our way.

I tried to get some cute pictures of the girls in the matching pj's Carolyn made them. Cute pictures with all 3 of them just seem to be impossible lately. Oh well. At least the pajamas are adorable. Another big thing this year: we purchased an artificial tree. I love real trees. I LOVE REAL TREES. I do not love the mess, the cost, and the disposing after Christmas. If Daniel didn't always travel so much during December I probably would have kept with the real tree tradition, but it was always hard to find a day to go. Maybe when the kids are older we will go back to it. This year the thought of climbing my pregnant body under the tree each day to water it was the final thing to send me over the edge to an artificial tree. I definitely don't like how it looks as much, but it isn't a big difference.

The school holiday program is always a hit. I am guessing in a few years I will wish each grade didn't sing the same song every year. For now Sadie's songs are new to me each year. And Elise was cute enough I didn't mind listening to the same songs from Sadie's Kindergarten year.

Millie decorated her face with mascara for Christmas, the little booger. It took a lot of makeup wipes to get the thick layers of mascara off.

Finally, about a week before Christmas I heard that our local Sub for Santa office desperately needed more people to sponsor families. There were about 60 families that still needed Christmas. Sub for Santa is a program to provide Christmas presents to children from families who can't afford it. I signed up and chose a family with 3 kids at similar ages to our kids. The program asks that you purchase 2-3 toys, 3-5 clothing items, and 1-2 books for each child. The parents supply toy ideas, clothing sizes, etc. We took the girls and shopped for about 4 hours on December 23rd. Sadie had a hard time picking out toys for another child. She kept picking out things she definitely didn't like because she didn't want to feel jealous of the girl she was shopping for. We had a good talk in the toy section of Wal-mart and she turned her attitude around a bit. Elise and Millie just struggled with that much shopping. When we got home we sorted all the stuff into a box for each child. We ended up being able to buy a bit more clothing and books than suggested because of some good sales. Daniel took Sadie and Elise to the family's house to drop off the boxes with the dad, or so we thought. When they arrived the father insisted they all come in and give the stuff to the children themselves. He said he wanted his children to know there are kind strangers who help others. Daniel said Sadie and Elise were a little uneasy at first, but when they saw how happy and excited the kids were it made them really happy too. Sadie told me it was the happiest she has ever felt. The parents could not have been more grateful and sweet. I was at home putting a whiny Millie to bed and the father texted me lots of pictures and thank-yous. Here's a picture that doesn't have much of their faces. It helped bring such a good feeling to our house to be able to help give other kids a fun Christmas.
We hope to be able to continue participating in the Sub for Santa program every year.

Telling the girls

We waited to tell the girls about my pregnancy until we were ready for the world to know. I told them I wanted to take a picture of them in front of the Christmas tree. This is the video we got

While it wasn't anything elaborate, it was actually even better than I could have imagined. I love their reaction. Millie even pretends to know what is going on.

I am glad we waited to tell them because over the next week they told everyone who would listen. I am happy they were able to share the exciting news.

Christmas Card 2016

We never took family pictures this year so in November we bought one of Fotofly's Santa sessions to get some pics for our Christmas card. People don't care about seeing me and Daniel anyway.
The way the sessions work is that you pay $30 for a 10 minute session. You have to have someone dressed as Santa (I requested that we not have a Santa and they said no). The photographer takes a bunch of pictures in a few poses and then you are done. We were in and out in about 40 minutes, between Daniel having to get the suit on, waiting our turn, and then the actual session.
I just wanted 1 or 2 pictures we could use for the card and we got several cute ones.
This one is my favorite. Millie was imitating the photographer trying to make her smile.
Daniel thinks these cookie ones are cheesy, but I think they are darling.
We tried a few other poses that were fine, but not really useful for much

I got a killer Groupon for Christmas cards from Zazzle. They cost the same as our typical cards from Costco, but they were double sided and made of cardstock. I only took a picture of the back. We used the cookie picture for the front, along with a cute greeting.

I was really hoping to be able to announce both our upcoming baby and his/her gender on our cards, but I was just barely not far along enough for an early ultrasound. Our insert this year is all about songs/lyrics that describe Nielson family happenings in 2016.

Mimi and the Girls

Here are a few pics from the fun Mimi had with the girls while we were gone.
Sadie made this list for them: make Christmas ornaments for mommy and daddy, ding and ditch (leave surprise treats on neighbors' doorsteps), and visit grandpa Blood. They did all these things and more

Playing in the snow (this actually happened just before we left for our trip but only Carolyn took pictures). Poor Sadie got a terrible migraine after this.

The festival of trees. Unfortunately Sadie got another migraine at this event. You can see in the picture below she was trying to smile but she was in pain. They had to leave early so Sadie could sleep it off.

Millie went to brunch at Kneaders with Mimi and Kylin

A visit to Grandpa Blood. Looks like it was....lively
Grandpa Blood always fixes up pictures with cool effects.

A Swig visit. Always a must with Mimi.

Lots of Millie-Mimi hang out time

They did much more than this, including a park visit in the snow. Carolyn helped the girls make me some very cute and personal Christmas decorations. One was a wreath made from their hand prints. From a distance it looks like a textured wreath, but up close you can see their different hand prints. Another was ornaments made with pictures of the girls.

It's always hard to say goodbye, but I'll bet Mimi is at least a little relieved to be able to rest.
And a silly face from Lou for good measure.
