A free and open internet creates immense social value and connects the world by broadly expanding access to information. However, the internet is also being used to create, incubate and spread large-scale hateful activities. 27 years ago, media technology was used to advance the genocide campaign against the Tutsi in Rwanda. Today, social media platforms are being used to purport denial, distortion, and revisionism of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. An upsurge in hate speech online inevitably leads to offline violence.

In this light, the Permanent Mission of Rwanda to the United Nations in partnership with the UN Department of Global Communications will host a webinar on the theme of Fighting online Hate and Genocide Denial, providing an opportunity to have a substantive discussion with experts in tech and policy fields. On one hand, this event will analyze methods and practices employed in the crafting and spreading online hate and denial, on the other hand, it will discuss the tools and policies available to internet companies/digital platforms, policymakers, media groups, academia, and the public to counter hate/extremism/genocide denial online.
