About

STS9 (SOUND TRIBE SECTOR 9) IN CONCERT:

STS9 take fans to groovy new stratospheres with impassioned performances and a unique mix of EDM, jazz, and psychedelic rock. The group prefers building a vibe to showing off with flashy flourishes, but these rockers know their instruments -- each memberÕs instrumental prowess is on full display at all times. Drummer Zach Velmer and percussionist Jeffree Lerner combine acoustic and electronic rhythms to create a larger-than-life beat. Bassist Alana Rocklin gets heads bobbing and bodies swaying with her tasty, swinging basslines. And keyboardist David Phipps and guitarist Hunter Brown alternate between smooth leads and effects-drenched rhythm chords to keep things moving and grooving. Altogether STS9 has loaded up their funky spaceship with a killer sound system and their most immersive laser-light show yet, promising to take ticket buyers on an interstellar ride during their 2015 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Atlanta in 1998, the original STS9 (short for Sound Tribe Sector 9) lineup featured Hunter Brown (guitar/midi), David Phipps (keys), Zach Velmer (drums), and David Murphy (bass/midi). The group soon released their debut album Interplanetary Escape Vehicle (1999), gaining attention for their mastery of jazz, funk, and electronica. Percussionist Jeffree Lerner came on board a year later and brought fleshed-out dance influences, which featured prominently on their 2000 sophomore effort Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace. The band then opened for superstars like Snoop Dogg, NAS, and Bassnectar before headlining tours of their own that fueled their growing reputation for stellar live performances. After David Murphy left the group in 2014, the band reached out to long-time friend and seasoned touring bassist Alana Rocklin to handle the low end. The refreshed lineup continues to bring mind-expanding music and far-out laser-light spectaculars to arenas and festivals around the world, converting more and more fans each step of the way.

I have followed sts9 around the country for years...since 2015. IT IS A LIFESTYLE. My husband and I cannot get enough of each and every show! They do multi night runs because THAT is how many hits they have, that is how dedicated they are to their craft in making each show unique.

STS9 was amazing!!! Been seeing them for over 20 years and they never disappoint. Every show I’ve been to has been considered one of the best nights of my life. My husband and I always fall even more in love after a tribe show. Getting lost in the music, dancing, connecting with friends and feeling the love and energy the band puts out, it strengthens our love for each other. STS9 is magic. The venue was awesome! First time at the Bellwether and we thought it was perfect.

  • Absolute Delight of a Show

If yóu want to see a band that can rock out, get funky, and also go crazy electronic sometimes in the same song, you should check out sts9. And even if you don't particularly like the music, the lights are 10/10 amazing so you won't be bored

  • Nostalgic Dream

STS9 began their 3-day event on Sunday. They played older music, specifically songs like New Soma and Inspire Strikes Back. I was in heaven. The crowd was friendly and groovy, no one being rude, and everyone allotting their neighbors enough space to dance comfortably. The bar service was quick, and the selection was pretty nice. Overall, this was an excellent time! Was so glad I got to see one of my favorite bands - 10 years after discovering them! Can't wait to party on with the tribe again soon.

The music was balanced well between space and melody and flowed seamlessly. The lights were beautiful and showed off the world class features of the Fox Oakland. Hour out to the folks at the Telegraph Room for making sure everyone had a great time

  • So fun!

Beautiful venue, great crowd, plenty of room to dance…. Drink prices are a bit outrageous tho…. I’m friends with one of the photographers which was a bonus! He got some great shots of the homies and I! Only think I felt about the sound is that the guitar was a bit overpowering, and we could barely hear Alana on bass…. Zack is the most fire and of course Phipps crushes every time! I’ll def be seeing them again with the crew! Consider updating your lights sometime soon …. They’re a bit dated!

  • Lov Ya! But, do better next time.

Huge STS9 fan here, and this should absolutely be a 5-star review. But it’s only a 1-star in hopes that the band actually sees it. I love catching them live any chance I get, and if you haven't seen them yet, what are you even doing? First show was back in '02 at the Troc, most recently at the Brooklyn Bowl Philly—plus plenty in between. Now, onto the bone I need to pick with the band: I've been to Brooklyn Bowls in Nashville, Vegas, and Philly, and not ONCE have I ever been told to stop bowling during a concert. But this time, the band had management ask everyone to hold off on bowling until set break. Apparently, the sound of pins crashing is too much? Here’s the kicker: Bowling there isn’t free—it’s a "VIP"thing that costs $300 for a lane (up to 6 people) and doesn’t even include your show ticket, which was $50 a pop. So for six of us, we’re already in for $600 before we even grab a drink. The group of us in about 6-7 lanes told the manager, "Uh, yeah, no. Not unless you’re handing out refunds (lanes only)." No pun intended, but this move felt pretty tone-deaf. As I told the manager, if the band doesn’t want to hear bowling in the background, maybe book a bigger venue.

  • Do better

by Dan on 9/15/24Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 4 out of 5

Please stop putting bands in Brooklyn bowl who are too big to play there. This was the 2nd time this year it was entirely too crowded when the show should’ve been at the Fillmore. The last 2 times STS9 were in town they played to packed crowds at the Fillmore. And with the crowd I was told I could not buy a beer downstairs and bring it up. I’ve done that before with no issues and it was the only way to get a drink without waiting for a half hour. Please go back to allowing cash as well.
