One More Light Has Gone Out

We hear about celebrities dying more often than we’d like. Some of them people know by name only. Others by their unique personality, like Robin Williams. Last year was a terrible year for the music and film world, as many great artists left us. Alan Rickman, Prince, David Bowie, Anton Yelchin, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and so many others. While I loved these people, and felt sad. It didn’t hit me as hard as the latest and tragic death of Chester Bennington (March 20, 1976- July 20, 2017).

If you’re not familiar with the name, Chester was one of the lead singers in the band Linkin Park. Their popularity came from the fact that they broke away from the typical rock and simply did what they wanted. Linkin Park mixes elements of rock, hip hop, electronica, alternative metal and even rap rock. Let me tell you, it’s always difficult to answer when someone asks you what genre they are. Lately they’ve been describe as Nu Metal, basically a genre of mostly alternative metal but with elements from any and all other genres. This gained them quick popularity as people could find something they loved in all of their songs. If you don’t like heavy metal, no problem. A lot of their songs are way softer. If you don’t like a pop vibe, not to worry: many other songs are electronica and rap. There’s a song for every style you might like.

My personal favoriteMeteoras come from the album Meteora. Numb, Breaking the Habit and Somewhere I Belong are just a few.

I started listening to them in middle school. I had my Walkman with me at all times, carrying a small disc case with all my best-loved discs: Linkin Park, Evanescence, Nightwish and so on.

I felt that I could relate to Linkin Park‘s songs. It was one of the few bands where, when I sang the lyrics I felt I was venting about my life and it was very therapeutic.

At the time I was already living in Peru, and my dream was to see them. I’d never gone to a concert before, and the thought was both terrifying and exciting. At one time there was even a rumor that they would come to Lima. My best friend and I went crazy when we heard, but in the end nothing came of it. Peru was still getting out from the shadow and fear of 30 years of terrorism, so there wasn’t a lot of movement of famous people going and going.

And then… December 2016 it was announced that Linkin Park was coming. I’d been waiting from than ten years for this! Of course, I bought a ticket right away. I went with a friend from work, and it was one of the best nights in my life!18404239_10155249789269328_6687063202603381865_o

The power displayed was awesome. The energy of the people jumping and singing. I was amazed at how well they knew the lyrics. Especially in English. Though there was an amusing moment when the music cut off and people kind of started mumbling before Mike and Chester helped them out.

Now, looking back, I can’t help but feel extremely lucky and honored to have seen them live. I wasn’t very close, and thanks to my short height I didn’t get to see much. But I was there, and it was a unique experience.

When I heard the news, I was crushed. I felt like a lost a friend and we wouldn’t get to listen to Chester singing anymore. It was terrible. Even now, I started writing this the day after his death, and only now am I posting because I could never finish.

I’ve read many comments about him, and his bandmates posted a letter to him which was just heart breaking. You can read it here.

Someone wrote: “Sometimes a person can save so many people, but can’t save themselves.” It was a depressing thought, but Chester, Mike and the rest of Linkin Park, have touched many hearts and given people struggling a voice. Thank you Chester for being there when I was going through difficult times. I could always but my headphones on and feel like someone out there understood.

Rest in peace Chester, you were and always will be loved.

[BOOK REVIEW] Illuminae – Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff

Illuminae

Title: Illuminae (The Illuminae Files #1)
Author: Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff
Year Published: 2015
Page Number: 599
Genre: Sci-fy, Dystopian
Personal Review:

69bc1-52bstar

Let me just start by saying that regardless of your thoughts on the plot of this book, the hardcover product is in itself, a thing of beauty. Illuminae is a tale told as if it were a recompilation of interview transcripts, classified documents, video camera analysis with documentary, including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, internal computer statistics and information. And so on. At first, I admit I thought it was going to be a pain to read, but it wasn’t. Anyone ever read World War z? It’s something along those lines.

Plot (NO SPOILERS)

This dossier is set after the events that transpired on the illegal mining colony Kerenza and the subsequent escape aboard three ships: The Alexander, The Copernicus and The Hypatia. The problem starts when a rival mining corporation called BeiTech massacres the Kerenza colony. In a universe where colonies are lightyears away from mayor planets, it’s a miracle they receive any help at all. The Alexander and its fleet come to help, but every surviving ship is damaged, and on board they’re full to capacity.

The dossier focuses on two refugees: Kady Grant and Ezra Mason. Kady is aboard the Hypatia and Ezra is on the Alexander. They’re on a six to seven month journey to the nearest port, which also acts as a wormhole they can pass through to civilization and help. The problem is that one of BeiTech’s ships, the Lincoln, is chasing them. Probably to make sure there are no witnesses. But that’s not all their problems. Aboard the Copernicus something dangerous is lurking. Kady, quickly becoming hacktivist, is set on finding out what the hell is happening, while communicating with Ezra who is conscripted as a pilot.

Hello everyone! Happy Sunday.

Okay, so I saw the trailer of this film when it came out and part of me rolled its eyes, because… okay apparently aliens were the reason the Great Wall of China was built. And of course a guy from the USA is gonna be the savior, yada yada yada.

I didn’t have much of an interest, more than anything because I simply didn’t have time. But then I saw it available for download and decided to watch it. Saturdays are a tough day from me cause I work from eight to four with minions who appear to be perpetually high on sugar and determined to make their teachers cry. I think one of these days I’m gonna damage a vocal cord with all the pleading and yelling to be heard over the chaos. So, yesterday I arrived home completely braindead and decided to watch it.

Guys… I LOVED IT! Okay, here’s the general plot…

(*SPOILERS FOR SIX OF CROWS-AND ALSO IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THIS BOOK YET)

The Plot

The plot continues on from Six of Crows. I won’t give much away, but in Six of Crows we were left with our criminals returning to the city of Ketterdam and one of their own being kidnapped.

Crooked Kingdom has a few things going on. One, to retrieve their comrade. Two, get vengeance for the slight. Three, find a way to make everyone pay and at the same time get what they all want. Kaz Breeker’s mind is put to the test as he tries to juggle different schemes at the same time.

Jesper tapped his fingers restlessly.

“Has anyone noticed this whole city is looking for us, mad at us, or wants to kill us?”

“So?” said Kaz.

“Well, usually it’s just half the city.”

[#AKF] Always Keep Fighting Campaign

Hello reader18672978_745998825605715_3041493500049212964_o.jpgs! Today I bring you a small post not about books, but about a really important campaign.

I’m a big fan of Supernatural. Many of you may watch it, or simply heard of it. This show has a huge following. Not necessarily because of the show itself, but because of the cast. They’re a lovely bunch of people. Every single one of them is just a gift. They’re funny, kind, humble and genuinely care about each other and their fans.

However, they still have their own problems. One of the lead roles, Jared Padalecki, suffers from depression. There were many times where he shared this with his fans, and asked for their support. The SPN Family always gave it, forming an even stronger bond between the cast and the fans.

This made Jared start a campaign to help fund charities that fight depression, self harm and suicide. It’s a touching campaign, especially because fans worldwide have shared their stories, applauded Jared for his honesty and even found strength in him. There are so many videos from panels where a fan would talk about this and they’re really moving.

This week, Jared has relaunched his campaigns. There are hoodies, t-shirts, long sleeved t-shirts and a mug. If anyone is interested in donating, please go here: (I think there are still 3 more designs to go, so this weekend the campaign will probably continue =) )

[Book Review] Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand

Before Going In

This book takes place in the Grisha world after the Civil War in Ravkan, which takes place in Leigh Bardugo’s The Grisha Trilogy: Shadow and Bone, Siege and Storm, and Ruin and Rising.

Now, the most common question about this book was: do I have to read the Grisha Trilogy before I read Six of Crows? The answer… no. There are some references, and understanding what the Grisha are and what they can do can be a bit confusing. This is my second time reading this book, and I now read it after reading the Grisha trilogy. It’s true that you don’t need to read those books first, but now that I have, I understood so many references. People from those books even get mentioned, and I was excited by this added look into what some people we left behind in Ravkan were doing. I also understood much better the different groups of the Grisha and their powers. So it might not be vital, but the trilogy is not bad and it makes things much clearer.

The Plot

Get Notified When the Kindle Book You Want DROPS in Price: eReaderIQ

This is a great post. I always notice Kindle prices go down but I0m like a crazy person going on Amazon every day to check on those prices. This post gives great information about how you can keep track with a handy website.

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that I love my Kindle. I use it every day, and if I’m not reading on it, I’m browsing on Amazon for the next book I want to read.

I’ve made all kinds of lists for myself: lists of books I want to read, lists of books that I wish would be available in Kindle format, and lists of books that I will buy if/when the price drops.

There was a time when I would return to those lists and check each and every book to look for price changes, etc. But now there is a better way. There are several websites that will watch your books for you, and then notify you when the price drops.

My at-the-moment favorite is eReaderIQ

On the Home Page, just click on “Track Books” and you’ll be given several options:
