 Soms krijg je op onverwachte momenten een onverwacht telefoontje. Het nummer op de telefoon gaf aan dat het uit Amsterdam kwam..... Zou het waar zijn?? Ja!!!

 Sometimes you get an unexpected phonecall at an unexpected time. The number on the phone stated it came from Amsterdam.... Really?? YES...

 De Afstap zal zeer binnenkort hun 40 jarig (!!!!) jubileum vieren en of ik een shawl wilde ontwerpen... JA! Natuurlijk. Binnen een week had ik een pakketje vol met Rowan Kidsilk 
Ik ging meteen aan het werk, ook al had ik nog de hele zomer. Gelukkig had ik al een idee met een patroon waar ik mee wilde werken.

 De Afstap will be celebrating their 40 year anniversary very soon and if there was a possibility that I could design a shawl with their favorite yarn. YES! Within the week I got a box full of Rowan Kidsilk. I got started rightaway eventhough I still had all summer. There was a pattern I had wanted to use and it turned out to be very fitting for this design.

 Na een paar weken stuurde ik de eerste foto's en ze vonden het wel erg mooi. Maar... Of ik ook het cijfer 40 er in kon verwerken. Het IS tenslotte een jubileum en 40 jaar voor een breiwinkel vind ik zelf ERG bijzonder...

 After a few weeks I send them some pictures of the first results and they were happy. But... they wanted to have the number 40 incorporated into the shawl. After all, it IS an anniversary shawl. And in my opinion 40 years is VERY remarkable for a yarn shop.

Summer vacation

Nou, zo'n 'geweldige' zomervakantie was het nou ook niet. Omdat het best frisjes was, kon ik eigenlijk gewoon doorbreien. Dat heb ik dus ook gedaan en zijn er deze zomer wel 3 sjaals en 2 paar sokken afgekomen.

Well, it wasn't a great summer vacation. Because the temperatures weren't that high, I could keep on knitting and that's what I did. And why I finished 3 shawls and 2 pairs of socks this summer.
The Trachtentuch A, (above) Mist Fountains (no pictures yet) and Remains of a Dragon. Remains of a Dragon. A little shawl with the pattern (edging) from Heere be Dragone. I had to use it again, it's só pretty.
The buttons are made by Sophiphi (Ravelry) with antique silk fabric. They come out great! It gives this little shawl several possibilitys in how to wear it.

Remains of a Dragon. Een kleine korte sjaal met een patroononderdeel van Heere be Dragone (de rand). Ik vond hem zó mooi, die wilde ik nóg een keer breien. De knopen zijn gemaakt met antiek zijden stof door Sophiphi (Ravelry). Ze komen prachtig tot hun recht en op deze manier is de sjaal op diverse manieren te dragen.
De Mist Fountains is ook af, maar die moet nog gewassen en geblockt worden.

Twin Pearls

Er is er een af!!
Een paar dagen geleden was hij klaar, rand en al. En toen ik hem aan het blokken was, had ik het per ongeluk omgekeerd neergelegd. Dus hoe het er aan de voorkant uit zou zien, was ook voor mij nog een verrassing.
En wat voor een!!! Hij is prachtig.
Mijn eigen ontwerp naar aanleiding van de keuzes van de ontvangster: Estland kruist Shetland.
Een prachtig nupp-patroon van lelietje-der-dalen; omzoomt door een kader in shetland patroon.
Dáár omheen is een rand aangebreid in het zelfde true-lace patroon als de Shetland Sweetheart Shawl.
I've got a shawl done!
It was finished a couple of days ago, the edging and all too. During blocking I noticed it was up-side down. So the good side was a surprise, even for me. It is gorgeous!!!
It's my own design; combining the taste of the reciever: Estland meets Shetland.
A wonderfull twin lily design, framed with a border in shetland pattern.
All is worked over with a true-lace shetland pattern, the same as in the Shetland Sweetheart Shawl.
Ik had me iets verrekend en er moest nog een vijfde bol komen; helaas was het erg moeilijk om het zelfde kleurbad te vinden (na diverse winkels gemaild/gebeld te hebben; wel de kleur, niet het bad). Gelukkig was er iemand op Ebay in Engeland die nog een bolletje had met hetzelfde kleurbad! Er bleef uiteindelijk maar 10 meter over van die extra bal...

I miscalculated significantly and there had to come a fifth ball of yarn. Unfortunately it was very difficult to get my hands on one in the Netherlands; eventhough I had called and mailed several shops. (did have the colour, not the right batch). In the end I found a shop on Ebay UK and she had the right batchnumber! I finished the shawl with only 12 yards left....

One (almost) down, one to go...

De eerste sjaal is al bijna klaar! Het is de sjaal met de 480 nupps er in, heel mooi zacht garen en alleen de rand hoeft er nog maar om heen. Dat is geen sinnecure, daar moet ik echt voor gaan zitten.
There. The first shawl is almost done! It has 480 nupps in it, the yarn is sumptuous and it only needs an edging. That's not easy, in true lace, but it can be done. De naam voor deze sjaal zal worden: Twin Pearls: de sjaal is een combinatie van 2 breitradities.
The name for this shawl will be: Twin Pearls; as the shawl is a combination of two knitting traditions.

Druk

Ik heb niet veel tijd; ik heb het druk. Er moet veel gebreid worden en wel vóór 10 juli. Als het even kan...
De eerste sjaal is een prachtige combinatie van patronen uit Shetland en Estland. Het kader is een shetland patroon, de nog aan te breien rand ook.
Het midden van de sjaal is bijna gelijk aan het patroon van mijn vorige sjaal uit Haapsalu Sall; Wild Lily. Ik ben op de helft.

I don't have much time; I'm busy! There are two shawls that have to be knit and if possible preferable befóre July 10th.
The first is a beautiful combination of patterns from the shetland and Estland. The border and edging are from shetland, the center is a nupp pattern from Haapsalu Sall. I'm half way now. Pattern: Topeltpiibelehekiri (twin lily?) Haapsalu Sall page 73

De tweede sjaal is een hele kluif en reuze interessant. Geen enkele rij is gelijk. De technieken zijn geweldig; kruisingen, zwevende steken en je ziet de draak (die moet er komen) groeien per naald.
Ik zit nu op rij 136, (de foto is eerder genomen) iets minder dan 200 rijen nog te gaan en dán nog de rand... Oef.

The second shawl is a large task but very interesting. Nó row is the same. Techniques are awesome; crossings, floating stitches... you can see the dragon (that is to be) growing per row. I'm on row 136, (picture is many rows earlier) less then 200 to go and then I have to knit and edging too.... oooh.

Test Knit

In het afgelopen voorjaar ben ik heel actief aan het breien geweest. Ik had diverse projecten, maar ik kon niet over alles wat vertellen.
Zo mocht ik o.a. voor Dutch Knitting Design een tweetal sjaals breien die ze als voorbeeld zal gebruiken voor haar online knitting pattern book. (binnenkort beschikbaar)

De eerste sjaal is al uitgebreid in beeld gekomen wegens een domme fout die groots hersteld moest worden.
In the past Springtime I've been very active on the knitting department. I had various running projects, but some remaind secret.
I was test knitting 2 shawls for Dutch Knitting Design, she will use them as an example for her (soon to be available) online knitting pattern book.

The first shawl has been documented due to a mistake that had some big consequences during repair. Pattern: Lilacs in Spring

De tweede sjaal ziet er heél anders uit. Niet alleen qua vorm, maar zeker ook qua opzet en afwerking. Laat ik het zo zeggen, de een na laastste naald had zo'n 1920 steken!
Kijk maar: The second shawl is something completely different. Not only in shape but mainly in structure and finishing. I'll say only this: on the second to last needle there were 1920 stitches....

Kleur

Hoi,

ik had op Ravelry gelezen dat zij haar Rowan Kidsilk had geverfd, omdat de kleuren die ze had nooit zou gebruiken of dragen.
Nu had ik op de handwerkbeurs 'witte' kid-silk van Drops gekocht. Nix mis mee, maar niet wit genoeg. Dus de Kool Aid uit de kast gehaald en geprobeerd. Moet je kijken wat ik geverfd heb:

I'd seen her trials of dyeing Rowan Kidsilk on Ravelry, because she didn't like the colours she had in her stash...
Now, I'd bought some 'white' kidsilk from Drops on the Craftsfair last februari. Nothing wrong with it, but not quite white enough. So I pulled out the Kool aid from the cupboard and tried it. Look what I've got now: De groene is gemaakt met Lemon-Lime. Omdat ik te weinig vloeistof had is hij niet dekkend geworden, de wit is nog zichtbaar.
De paarse is gemaakt met BlackBerry, en ook die is niet helemaal dekkend geverfd door te weinig vloeistof. The green was made with Lemon Lime, because i didn't use enough liquid the colour didn't totally cover the yarn.
The same for the purple: Blackberry, not completely covered all the white.

Dat zijn 4 'nieuwe' bollen!
These are 4 'new' balls of yarn!
Edit: The purple isn't as purple on the ball, it's more like old pink. Very beautiful.

Growing Pains...

Bridget wordt bijna 6. Het duurt nog wel even maar de eerste tekenen van het groter worden zijn vanaf vanmorgen duidelijk zichtbaar. Ze heeft haar derde tand gewisseld. Op zich niet speciaal, maar wel omdat het de middelste boven is! De onderste 2 waren van het voorjaar al gewisseld, en hebben prachtige karteltjes en zijn vlijmscherp.
Bridget is almost turning 6, and the first signs of growing up is now clearly visable. Her third tooth has dropped and the new one is already in sight. The others were also a big thing, but this one's special because it's so easy to see.
Ik zou ook nog wat vertellen over de andere dingen die ik had gekocht op de handwerkbeurs. Zoals je boven op de foto ziet heb ik nog 2 bollen Zitron Nimbus Blauw gekocht. Het past precies bij de ongekleurde wol uit mijn Goodiebag van Storm en Ballee.
I promised to tell you about the yarn I bought on the craftsfair. It's Zitron Nimbus Blue. It fits beautifully with the undyed yarn from my goodiebag.

Prachtig he, de Quiviut op de streng. Hierboven was hij nog niet gewassen. Het bolletje blijkt ongeveer 500 m te zijn, maar na het wassen was het nog zo ontzettend zacht, de draad is al 4x gebroken tijdens het opbollen.
The Quiviut is beautiful on a skein, he? It is about 546 yards and so soft, it broke 4 times during the winding into a ball.

In een hele mooie winkel met wol en quiltspullen "De Schapekop" heb ik me zitten verbazen over alles wat ze hebben. Rowan, Loopi, Noro, Drops... en wol van eigen schaap. Ze hebben geen website, maar het is de moeite van een ritje er heen zeker waard. Ik kocht er 3 bollen Rowan Felted Tweed.
In a well stocked yarnshop "De Schapekop" I was in 'awe' to see what lines they carry; Drops, Rowan, Loopi, Noro in all colours and sizes.

Ik heb bij deze shop op de beurs nog 4 zakjes Koolaid gekocht. dat gaan we eens even proberen. Ik heb begrepen dat het alleen 'werkt' op dierlijke haren, niet op plantaardig. Ik ga een stukje op zijde, cashmere/merino proberen.
Ik heb nog diverse projecten op de naald, maar nog lang niet af. De Japanse Feathers and Fans schiet al aardig op, ik heb nu ongeveer 320 st op de naald en ik ben nog lang niet klaar. Hij wordt voor mijn schoonzus.
At the craftsfair I also bought 4 sachets of Koolaid from them, to try on some silk, cashmerino...
I've also got several projects on the needles, but nearly not finished. The Japanese Feathers and Fans shawl is coming along nicely, but the stitchcount is stacking up. This will be for my SIL.

Veel

Falling Leaves met Rowan Kidsilk Aura
Er gebeurt veel, want de kinderen zijn bijna allemaal weer naar school. C. hoeft pas maandag zijn rooster op te halen (vmbo). Niet dat ik overdag veel brei, maar af en toe een naaldje helpt wel. Dit is het voorlopig eindresultaat van de Rowan Kidsilk Aura. 70 cm lang en 30 cm breed. Meer kreeg ik niet uit de 150 m (50 gr, naald 7). Eerst maar weer eens contact zoeken met de winkel en kijken hoeveel het verzenden kost. (het weegt tenslotte bijna niets).
Misschien dat ik net als bij de Print 'O The Wave sjaal, aan het begin weer verder ga, zodat de blaadjes letterlijk 'vallen'.
Lot can be done when almost all the kids are in school again after the holiday. My eldest C. can sleep in till monday before he has to pick up his schedule. Now, I don't knit during the day but an occasional row will add up at the end of the day. In the picture you see the Rowan Kidsilk Falling Leaves pattern, so far... I'm out of yarn. Maybe I'll start with new yarn at the start so that the falling leaves will fall down on each arm. Measurements: almost 28 inches and 12 across, needle USA 10.5 and 50 grams).
Double laid down to see the colour/pattern better. Dubbel voor de duidelijkheid.
Ik heb ook alvast wat geborduurd voor mijn nieuwe tas met japanse stof. Kijk maar bij de foto rechts. I've also embroidered something for my new bag with japanese fabric, look for the picture to the right.

Makin' it!

Ik heb een klein naaldentasje gemaakt van de japanse stof die ik van de week gekocht had. De ronde flapjes zijn met 2 zijdig plakvlies gestreken, en niet afgewerkt. Het midden is uit een stuk, gevuld met fiberfill en doorgestikt om makkelijker te vouwen.
I've made a little needle bag. The fabric is japanese, the filling is fiberfill only in the center part. The round flaps are just 2 fabrics glue-ed together with a layer of ironing fiber (???) and not sown. Hier onder nog een foto van de Rowan Kidsilk aura die ik ook had gekocht. Erg donkergroen, precies mijn kleur. De aura is 5/10 dikte, de Haze is 10/10 en dus dunner. Er zit minder op de bol en ik ben begonnen met een sjaal in Ostrich patroon. Bijna het zelfde als Feather and Fan, maar dan afwisselend.
Below a picture of the Rowan Kidsilk aura I bought. The aura is a bit thicker than the Haze, and was just my colour. Very dark green. I've started the Ostrich pattern with it, to knit a scarf.


Ostrich Plumes Pattern:
R1: *( s1, k1, psso) times 2, s1, k2, p2sso, (s1, k1, psso) times 2, (yo, k1) times 5, yo *repeat.
R2: purl all
R3: knit all
R4: purl all
Repeat R1-4 4 times then:
R17: * k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, (s1, k1, psso) times 2, (s1, k2, p2sso), (s1, k1, psso) times 2, yo, k1, yo * repeat.
R18: purl all
R19: knit all
R20: purl all
Repeat 17-20 4 times
Then repeat R 1-4 4 times and then R17-20 4 times untill desired lenght is reached.
Pay attention to the fact that the (s1, k2, p2sso) is always above the previous (s1, k2, p2sso).
That means that at the beginning of the row you have to count to see at which stitch you're at.

Bij gebrek aan beter....

Bij gebrek aan beter gaat men ergens anders heen. Utrecht...

Ik ben vandaag maar naar Utrecht geweest. Van te voren goed uitgezocht wat ik wilde, en waar ik dat moest halen. Eerst naar Carol Cox geweest om Japanse stoffen op te halen. Na veel treuzelen (ik ben er maar 1x!!!) heb ik een pakketje gekocht met 5 verschillende stoffen, varierend van donkerbruin tot licht grijs. En nog een klein pakketje van 50 lapjes van 10x1o cm, met allerlei rozenstofjes.
Bij de Slegte kon ik amper slagen, wat ik zocht hadden ze niet, en wat ik niet zocht wel, maar dan kon ik niet meer naar de breiwinkel.
In de breiwinkel uiteindelijk (ook lang getreuzeld) Rowan Kidsilk aura gekocht. Donkergroen. Er zit minder op de bol (75 m) maar de draad is iets dikker dan Kidsilk Haze (210 m). Ik wilde de Haze wel kopen, maar ze had gewoon niet de goede kleur groen. Dus een compromis, 2 bolletjes, en ik kan nog bij bestellen. (gevaarlijk).

I went to Utrecht, because maybe there I could buy something nice. First I went to Carol Cox, for some Japanese fabrics. I've bought 5, from brown to grey. Also a package with little cuts of fabric (4 x 4 inches) with flowers.
At the bookstore I could hardly find what I wanted, but found some other things. I had to make the choice to buy books or yarn. The yarn won...
In the yarnshop I took my time to decide on the Rowan kidsilk. I took the 'aura' instead of the 'haze'. The colour of the aura was more to my liking. Dark green. I can always order more.....
